AN EXTRACT FROM THE OPEN PETITION SUBMITTED TO THE LAGOS STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY AS IT CONCERNS THE STUDENT POPULACE IN YABA COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY(YABATECH) This is aimed at sensitizing every students of YABATECH on the need to come together as masses and collectively engage in the struggle against injustice at the level of school fee increment that is fast becoming a trend in our great institution. "We seize this medium to bring to the your notice, the obnoxious fee increment that currently plagues the Yaba College of Technology. With downright condemnation, the hike was implemented in the most fraudulent and clandestine manner with flagrant disregard for any form of democratic process. The management of the institution increased the fee to an outrageous amount as high as over #50,000 in addition to #20,000(increased from #10,000. 100% increment) acceptance fee with little or no regard for the Students. It's quite unfortunate the inglorious fact that earlier before now, the management had in the most despotic and embarrassing manner, placed a ban on the democratic right of the Students; the Students' Union(which took place after an inconclusive election conducted by staffs of the College) Aside the obvious fact that the astronomical hike albeit inimical is coming at a period when #18,000 minimum wage has not been reviewed by the Federal Government, retrenchment in private sectors and the Appropriation Bill yet to be signed into law for the 2017 Fiscal Year has pitched the Education sector to a paltry and meagre sum of #50 billion, contrary to the United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) charter which proposed that no less than 26% of budgetary allocation for a developing country be set aside for Education. The Federal Republic of Nigeria is a signatory to this treaty. The increment nevertheless consist of many charges that are unarguably baseless and extremely fraudulent. A glaring example is a scenario whereby fresh HND students are to pay fees for X-ray and Medical Exam/Services separately, charged at #6000 and #5500 respectively amongst many others With the above analysis, it is completely clear from all perspective that the hike remains thoughtless and unacceptable especially for a population that is hard pressed by a biting recession that has impoverished 120 million Nigerians and concentrated wealth illegally in the hand of five persons as recent research has proved. We forthwith, demand the reversal of the illegal and despotic fee back to status quo and the restoration of the illegally banned Students' Union. We maintain that only adequate funding of education and not fee hike can salvage the deleterious ruin that has befallen our respective tertiary institutions." #SaveYCTstudents #NoToUnjustFeeIncrement Aluta Continua!
