SportsAlexis Sanchez Given 16-month Prison Sentence For Tax Fraud by morili(op): 12:55pm On Feb 07, 2018
The 29-year-old will not spend any time in jail despite his sentence and has agreed to pay the money he owes with interest
Alexis Sanchez has accepted a 16-month prison sentence for committing tax fraud during his time at Barcelona.
The Manchester United forward was accused of defrauding the treasury of €1 million between 2012 and 2013, relating to income from his image rights.
Sanchez has reached an agreement with the prosecutor to pay the money he owes with interest.

Despite the verdict, the Chilean will not spend time in prison as he is a first offender and the sentence is less than two years.
The ex-Arsenal star is the latest football figure to be punished by Spanish prosecutors for dodging taxes.
Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Jose Mourinho and Ricardo Carvalho have all been pursued by the authorities recently.
Barcelona star Messi was handed a 21-month jail term in 2016, but managed to exchange it for a €250,000 fine last year, while Mourinho paid to settle his and Carvalho was given a fine and a seven-month sentence. Ronaldo, accused of owing €14.7m, has protested his innocence in an ongoing case.
Alexis joined Barcelona from Udinese in 2011 and spent three years with the Catalan side, winning a Liga title as well as the Club World Cup under the guidance of Pep Guardiola.

He left to join Arsenal in 2014 and starred for Arsene Wenger's team until making the shock move to Old Trafford in January in a swap deal for Henrikh Mkhitaryan, despite previously agreeing to reunite with Guardiola at Manchester City.
The 29-year-old has made three appearances for Mourinho's side so far, scoring his first goal for his new club in Saturday's 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town.
The Red Devils are currently 13 points behind leaders Man City after 26 matches and return to action on Sunday when they visit Newcastle United.

SportsCheck Out How Vandals Destroy Lionel Messi Statue For Second Time In 2017 by morili(op): 2:06pm On Dec 04, 2017
A tribute to the Argentine on Paseo de la Gloria has been targeted once again after it was previously torn apart in January
A statue of Barcelona ace Lionel Messi in Buenos Aires has been vandalised for the second time this year.
It appears that the legs of the player’s likeness were cut, leaving the body of the statue of the Argentina international sprawled across the pavement on Costanera Sur.

In January 2017, the sculpture suffered similar damage, with the torso and head torn off only a matter of months after it was placed in its current location.

The statue was part of a series of sculptures of Argentina's sporting heroes on the Paseo de la Gloria along the banks of the Rio de la Plata.

Alongside the image of Messi stands other greats such as tennis stars Gabriela Sabatini and Guillermo Vilas, NBA basketball sensation Manu Ginobili and motorsport hero Juan Manuel Fangio.

No one has yet been found responsible for the actions.
Messi fired Argentina to the World Cup finals earlier this year as he scored a hat-trick in a critical qualifier against Ecuador, when it seemed that they might not reach Russia 2018 at all.

SportsLionel Messi Signs New Barcelona Contract With €700m Buyout Clause by morili(op): 2:48pm On Nov 25, 2017
The 30-year-old attacker has put pen to paper on a new deal that will carry him through with the club until he is 34, with a mammoth €700m release fee.

Lionel Messi has signed his new contract with Barcelona, the Camp Nou side have confirmed.

Messi's new deal will run until 2021 and has a release clause of €700 million.

The 30-year-old finally put and end to the speculation, however, by penning a new deal that also included an astronomical €700million release clause, meaning there will be no repeat of the mistake which saw PSG trigger Neymar’s buyout clause last summer.

He made his debut 4,788 days ago.

He has played 602 games.

He has scored 523 goals.

He has won 30 trophies.

His first novel Things Fall Apart (1958) is widely considered his magnum opus, and is the most widely read book in modern African literature.

Achebe received numerous accolades and has been called “the father of modern African writing”. We celebrate the birth of one Africa’s foremost novelist with 10 quotes from his selected works.

1. “If you don’t like someone’s story, write your own.” The Paris Review, 1994.

2. “When suffering knocks at your door and you say there is no seat for him, he tells you not to worry because he has brought his own stool.” Quoted in Arrow of God, 1964.

3. “One of the truest tests of integrity is its blunt refusal to be compromised.”

4. “My weapon is literature.”

5. “We cannot trample upon the humanity of others without devaluing our own. 6. “The white man is very clever. He came quietly and peaceably with his religion. We were amused at his foolishness and allowed him to stay. Now he has won our brothers, and our clan can no longer act like one. He has put a knife on the things that held us together and we have fallen apart.” Quoted in Things Fall Apart, 1958.

7. “Nobody can teach me who I am. You can describe parts of me, but who I am – and what I need – is something I have to find out myself.”

8. “While we do our good works let us not forget that the real solution lies in a world in which charity will have become unnecessary.” Quoted in Anthills of the Savannah, 1987.

9. “My position is that the Nobel Prize is important. But it is a European prize. It’s not an African prize … Literature is not a heavyweight championship. Nigerians may think, you know, this man has been knocked out. It’s nothing to do with that.” Quoted in Ezenwa-Ohaeto, pp. 263–264.

10. “Every generation must recognize and embrace the task it is peculiarly designed by history and by providence to perform.” There Was a Country: A Personal History of Biafra, 2012.

SportsRussia-born Brian Idowu Joins Nigeria Squad Ahead Argentina Friendly by morili(op): 10:42am On Nov 14, 2017
The Amkar Perm left-back has united with the Super Eagles and he is excited at the prospect of making his international bow against the Argentines

Brian Idowu has expressed excitement after he joined up with the Nigeria team in Russia ahead of Tuesday’s friendly encounter against Argentina.
The St. Petersbur-born player was named on the standby list for the Super Eagles’ clashes against Algeria and Argentina. But injuries to some members of the squad member saw him called up.

Idowu, a left back plying his trade with Russian Premier League outfit Amkar Perm, will hope to make his debut in the friendly against the Albiceleste.

Revelling in his involvement with the three-time African champions, the 25-year-old via the team twitter handle said: “I'm happy to invited to the national team as part of the Super Eagles.
“I want to do my best, take this chance to play my best football and be with the squad for a long time to support the team and to help the team in any way I possibly can.

“This is a great opportunity for all the Nigerians out here [in Russia]. We qualified for the World Cup and we are preparing and hope we are going to bring joy and excitement all Nigerian fans," he added.

The Ankar Perm player will give Gernot Rohr more options in the left-back position ahead of the World Cup with first choice Elderson Echiejile the only natural player in that position.
Ola Aina, predominantly a right-footer, filled in for the Sivasspor man - not invited due to injury - in Friday’s World Cup qualifiers draw against Algeria in Constantine.

To the best of my knowledge if you didn't get the mail, it doesn't mean you can't be awarded the scholarship. Normally during the interview process, PTDF always ask prospective scholars to come with a copy of their admission letter. This will be checked during the interview process. But for the case whereby you didn't go to the interview with your admission letter and you didn't receive the mail as well, it may mean the candidate is not successful. All the same keep your fingers cross and look forward to list. We hope it will come out soon. I wish you guys the very best in your various endeavors.

I was once in your shoes. I finished from Cranfield University some years back. Be rest assured PTDF will take good care of their scholars.

You need to wake up and write something meaningful. How long will you continue to make derogatory statement. Where do you think it will take you?
The fact is the number of people that will be on the list is defined base on criteria well known to PTDF. Whether you or someone from your state will definitely be selected to fill the slot for your state. PTDF, will never select a candidate from the North to take the slot of any state from the South.
Any additional list that comes after the merit list may comprise of names from North or South depending on your connection. Please let us be civil when we make comments particularly on platforms like this.

PoliticsFG Suspends West African Ventures From Nigeria’s Oil And Gas Industry by morili(op): 9:59am On Jun 30, 2016
The federal government has suspended West African Ventures (WAV) from participating in ongoing and future tenders in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry for violating the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development (NOGICD) Act of 2010, better known as the Nigerian Content Act.

The government has also directed ExxonMobil Companies in Nigeria, Chevron Nigeria Limited, Total E&P, Addax Petroleum and Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) to stop doing business with the company because of their frequent and flagrant disregard of the provisions of the NOGICD Act.
WAV is a provider of offshore engineering, procurement, fabrication, installation and vessel charter services in the oil and gas industry.

THISDAY however gathered that the company allegedly violated the Nigerian Content law and also frustrated President Muhammadu Buhari’s efforts to build local capacity in the oil and gas industry and create jobs for Nigerians.

In the letters addressed to each of the managing directors of the international oil companies (IOCs), the acting Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), Mr. Daziba Patrick Obah informed the IOCs that WAV had failed to respond to the agency’s notices with adequate evidence to show compliance to the Nigerian Content Act.

In his letter to the Managing Director of ExxonMobil Companies in Nigeria, comprising Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited and Esso Exploration & Production Nigeria Limited, Obah said in view of WAV’s fragrant abuse of Nigerian laws, the agency had no option than to initiate sanctions against the company.

The letter with reference number NCDMB/ES/18/16 also directed ExxonMobil to suspend consideration of WAV in ongoing and future tendering processes with immediate effect.

The NCDMB also sent similar letters to Chevron Nigeria Limited with reference number: NCDMB/ES/17/16 dated June 9, 2019, as well as Addax, Agip and Total.

The President of the company, Mr. Jacques Roomans, was outside the country and messages sent to him by THISDAY seeking the company’s official response were returned undelivered.
When contacted, the Secretary to the President, Mr. Johnson Mgbemena, told THISDAY that the Company Secretary would provide official response but no response was received despite several reminders.

However, an official of the company, who was not authorised to speak on the matter told THISDAY that the company was collaborating with NCDMB to address the issues.

A source at NCDMB also accused WAV of gross violations of Sections 28, 33 and 41 (2) of the NOGICD Act 2010 and deploying non-compliant assets and expatriates.

According to him, the company is flooded with expatriates who do not have approvals from the board and whose roles can easily be performed by Nigerians.

CrimeAdam Johnson To Be Paid £15 A Week To Attend Sex Offender's Course In Prison by morili(op): 4:23pm On Mar 07, 2016
Disgraced footballer Adam Johnson who is set to go to jail for sexual crimes against an underage girl is set to be paid £15 a week to attend sex offender's course while in prison. The 28-year-old, who earned £60,000 a week with Sunderland before he was sacked, will receive up to £15 a week while completing the rehab programme.

Once inside he will be encouraged to confront his crimes in both group and one to one sessions. Johnson is expected to serve his time at HMP Frankland in Durham with other inmates like child killers Ian Huntley and Levi Bellfield but will not qualify for early release unless he can show parole officers he has completed the course and is genuinely sorry.

A Prison Service spokesman said:

“Prisoners who take part in work, education, or offending behavior programmes receive a minimal amount but only if they participate in purposeful activity.”

“Offenders are asked to express the impact their actions have had verbally, in written work and in the form of pictures, paintings and collages.”
Former inmate Jermaine James suggested Johnson may have to pay inmates to protect him:

“He may have to pay money to criminals to protect him. I am not suggesting he is going to do that, but it is a factor for him.

Foreign AffairsRobert Mugabe Wants To Live To 100 by morili(op): 7:40am On Mar 05, 2016
Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe said his successor must be chosen democratically and that his wife will not automatically inherit the role, a warning to feuding members of his ZANU-PF party that he is still in charge after 36 years in power.

The comments from Africa’s oldest leader, now aged 92, are his clearest indication that he wants to be president for life according to report.

In a two-hour interview with state broadcaster late on Thursday he said: “Why successor? I am still there. Why do you want a successor? I did not say I was a candidate to retire.” Leaders were elected not appointed, he said.

“In a democratic party, you don’t want leaders appointed that way to lead the party. They have to be appointed properly by the people, at a gathering of the people, at a congress.”

Mugabe said he was not behind his wife Grace’s quick rise within ZANU-PF, which has led to reports that she has plans to succeed her husband.

“Others said the president wants to leave the throne for his wife. Where have you ever seen that, even in our own culture, where a wife inherits from her husband?” Mugabe said.

The former liberation fighter was chosen in 2014 to lead his party for another five years, automatically becoming the ZANU-PF presidential candidate for Zimbabwe’s 2018 presidential vote.

He will be 99 if he wins and completes that term, his last under a new constitution.

He also told ZBC TV he wanted to live to 100, that he was fit and still did daily morning exercises.

PoliticsManny Pacquiao, And His Lifelong Lessons For Nigerian Lawmakers by morili(op): 7:29am On Mar 05, 2016
Many know Manny Pacquiao as one of the best pound for pound boxer of all times but not many know he is also a politician and lawmaker in his country, Philippines.

Pacquiao who lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr in a fight dubbed “Fight of the Century” has shown he has a big heart.

While Nigerian lawmakers are struggling to get N4 Billion approved for their new cars, this selfless boxer built houses for thousands of residents in his constituency and gave them out for free, sending a message to other lawmakers across the world especially those from Africa and Nigeria who have been repeatedly accused of doing very little for their constituencies.

On 14 February, on his official Twitter account, he wrote: “I am so happy giving these houses free to my constituents in Sarangani Province for more than thousand families.”

His gesture did not go unnoticed as by millions on Twitter as they prayed for him and wished him well.

Pacquiao has formally declared he is running for senator.

Hope our politicians can be this magnanimous>>>>>
