26-year-old TimiAdeoye graduated two years ago from the University of Benin and was a frequent user of the Benin-Ore route. According to him, “traveling on Nigerian roads used to be a nightmare for me; I still remember spending twelve long hours on a trip from Lagos to Benin regularly since I got admission eight years ago. The memory of those trips still leaves a distaste in my mouth”, he continues, “but I had to continue because I had to go school."

Being a road that is the major link road between the West and South of Nigeria, it was appalling that it was in that state of decay. From 2006 to as recent as 2012, anyone who plied the Benin-Ore route would have easily testified to its horrific state. The deplorable condition of the road aside, there were daredevil armed robbers who were lords of the night and perpetual residents of the area and it was inevitable that travellers inclined to always say a prayer to avert terrible traffic jam lasting hours, and loss of lives and property. As Adeoye aptly describes it, it was “hell on Earth”.

TimiAdeoye: Benin-Ore-Shagamu Expressway Under Goodluck Jonathan Popular columnist, SonalaOlumhense once said, “If you are a Nigerian, chances are you know someone who has spent an entire day, at least once, traveling the 140-mile Sagamu-Benin City road, or been killed trying to do so.“

TimiAdeoye: Benin Ore Road during my days as a Student, before Goodluck Jonathan

As the legend goes, a former Minister of Works was reported to have cried openly while inspecting the said road once, calling it a guzzler of lives. Citizen upon citizen have resorted to pleading with successive governments on national television and through other media to see to the swift repairs of the said road.

Despite all these coupled with criticisms from traditional monarchs especially the Oba of Benin whose domain has been a major victim, unfulfilled promises continued to be the order of the day.

Sagamu-Benin is part of the Lagos-Mombasa, as well as Algiers-Lagos sections of the Trans-Africa Highway, and of Nigeria’s East-West Road. First constructed in the 70s, it was originally a three-hour route. Since it began to deteriorate, contracts have been awarded every other year by different governments. Somehow, nothing concrete has been done.

Then good luck came along, even literally. At last, the cries of Nigerians had broken through to the top echelons and the current government’s determination to get the road fixed and useable again was to put a smile on the faces of those who ply the road.
Tapping into the controversial Subsidy Re-investment Programme (SURE-P) funds, the federal government decided to fix the roads once and for all to ease the suffering of commuters. In September 2014, President Goodluck Jonathan commissioned the Phase 1 of the road, spanning 75 kilometres. The second phase, as Minister of Works, Mike Onolememen explained had not been fully completed because of technical challenges but was commendably over 60% done.

An excited governor Adams Oshiomole of Edo state – a prominent member of the opposition All Progressives’ Congress (APC) – stressed that the Federal Government’s effort in reconstructing the road is “the most outstanding intervention the road has witnessed over the years.

A road that was once a death trap began to wear a new face and is in its present state, good as brand new. A journey of twelve hours and counting has now been reduced to a third of that time – four hours or less.

“God sent us his son in the form of Goodluck Jonathan!” shrieks Madam Veronica Omoregie who travels every week from Lagos to Asaba to buy goods for her trade that has sustained her and her three children since her husband died tragically in an auto crash on the same road, in 1999.

This transformation was even buttressed by a recent survey conducted by the NOI-Gallup Polls on the 8th of January 2015, which showed that 60% of Nigerians who travelled during the yuletide season acknowledged that the roads had indeed been improved on.

According to the findings released, majority of Nigeria road users found it easier to travel to their different destinations in various parts of the country during the Christmas holiday, unlike the previous year.

The survey read in part, ‘Overall, 69 percent of respondents were of the opinion that the roads had either improved or had improved very much. As a result of the improved condition of the Benin- Ore road and others in general, transport giants, ABC Transport Company slashed its fare prices in a widely circulated advert carried by The Punch Newspaper in May 2014.

It reportedly added the words, ‘The roads are getting better’, a phrase that is a true reflection of the government’s commitment to infrastructure and national development.
On his way to collect his transcripts last week, Adeoye slept for most of the journey in the 18-seater bus he boarded from Lagos to the university’s main campus in Ugbowo, one of Benin’s many sprawling districts. The inscription “Welcome is the best journey” on the lorry in front of his vehicle one of the few times he was awake barely registered until he got down – the trip was too smooth for him to care.

The eerie moment a one year old girl was pulled to the ground by an unseen force was captured on camera and it's a little scary. Little Lexi Hood was playing peek-a-boo with her parents in their home in Wales when she was suddenly knocked to the ground. Lexi's dad said Lexi said 'naughty boy' after she was knocked down as if she was telling someone off. See the video after the cut..it's quite strange

Went through instagram this morning and saw quite a number of Nigerian couples sending loving messages to each other for their followers to read. What I wonder now is if these couples look into each other's eyes and say it to themselves when they are alone and no one else can hear what they are saying? Abi, is it only on social media we hear all 'dem cheesy love quotes?' What do you guys think?

SportsCristiano Ronaldo Wins Ballon D'or + Other List Full Winners by MrPatricsoN(op): 6:57am On Jan 13, 2015
https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/320/mcs/media/images/80222000/jpg/_80222345_ronaldo.jpgRonaldo receives Ballon d'Or award

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo has won the Ballon d'Or world footballer of the year award for the second year in a row.

The Portugal captain beat Barcelona forward Lionel Messi and Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to the award.

Wolfsburg and Germany midfielder Nadine Kessler was named women's player of the year, while Colombia's James Rodriguez won goal of the year.

Germany's World Cup winner Joachim Low won men's coach of the year.

Wolfsburg boss Ralf Kellermann was named women's football coach of the year after a successful defence of the Champions League.

The three candidates for the Ballon d'Or were all picked in the team of the year, along with defenders Philipp Lahm, David Luiz, Thiago Silva and Sergio Ramos, midfielders Andres Iniesta, Toni Kroos and Angel Di Maria and forward Arjen Robben.

Ballon d'Or

Cristiano Ronaldo
successfully defended his world player of the year status convincingly with 37.66% of all votes, winning for a third time. Barcelona and Argentina counterpart Lionel Messi - who won four years in a row until Ronaldo beat him last year, was second on 15.76%. He was narrowly ahead of Bayern Munich and Germany keeper Manuel Neuer, who had 15.72%.

Ronaldo, who scored 52 goals in 43 games during 2014, looked emotional when collecting the award from former France, Barcelona and Arsenal striker Thierry Henry.

The 29-year-old said: "I would like to thank all of those who voted for me, my president, my coach and Real Madrid. It has been an unforgettable year. To win this trophy at the end of it is something incredibly unique."

Women's World Player of the Year

Wolfsburg and Germany midfielder Nadine Kessler was named women's player of the year. The 26-year-old beat Brazil's Marta and United States international Abby Wambach.

Kessler said: "My heart is beating madly at the moment. I don't think I ever thought in my life I would achieve this moment.

"Without my team-mates and my coach, this would never have been possible. I have a great degree of gratitude that I must give to my family. They have seen me through all the difficult times."

Puskas Award (goal of the year)

Colombia's James Rodriguez, 23, won the Fifa goal of the year award for his World Cup strike against Uruguay, beating Irishwoman Stephanie Roche.

Roche, who scored a stunner for Peamount against Wexford in the Irish top flight, had hoped to be the first female winner of the Puskas Award.

She landed 33% of the public vote to Rodriguez's 42%. Manchester United striker Robin van Persie - the third nominee - earned just 11% for his diving header against Spain in the World Cup.

Fifa/Fifpro World XI

The Fifa team of the year was voted for by 20,000 professional footballers worldwide.

World coach - men's football

Germany boss Joachim Low, 54,won after leading his country to World Cup glory in Brazil, beating Argentina 1-0 in the final.

"It is a huge honour after what's been an incredibly successful year," he said. "It's the icing on the cake - the cake obviously being the World Cup. I'm just taking this award on behalf of everybody who has taken this team to where it is. I would like to thank all the German coaches who do so much good work with the young players. They are all coaches of the year."

Low beat Diego Simeone, who led Atletico Madrid to the Spanish title and Champions League final, and Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti, whose side beat their city rivals to become European champions for a record 10th time.

World coach - women's football

Wolfsburg boss Ralf Kellermann, 46,was named women's football coach of the year after leading the German club to a successful defence of the Champions League.

He said: "This award is an outstanding moment. Unfortunately I've picked up an individual award for what is team sport, so I dedicate this to my whole team. I would also like to pay tribute to [Wolfsburg midfielder] Junior Malanda, who was so sadly taken from us two days ago."

Kellermann beat Germany Under-20 boss Maren Meinert and Japan boss Norio Sasaki to the award.

Fair Play Award

The winner was the thousands of volunteers who gave up their time to work at Fifa competitions - including the World Cup - over the past 12 months.

Presidential Award

The Presidential Award was picked by Fifa president Sepp Blatter for "a person that has made a superlative contribution to football without seeking to monopolise the limelight".

The winner was Japanese journalist Hiroshi Kagawa, who covered his 10th World Cup last summer at the age of 89.

EducationUnilorin To Get 100% Internet Coverage In 2015 – Ambali by MrPatricsoN(op): 9:44am On Jan 08, 2015
University of Ilorin, UNILORIN to get 100 per cent internet coverage for the University community by next year.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), has said that plans are underway to ensure 100 per cent internet coverage for the University community by next year.

Prof. Ambali disclosed this last Tuesday (December 23, 2014) while receiving the report of the Google Student Ambassadors Summit in Accra, Ghana, from the 2014 Google Student Ambassadors of the University, Abideen Olasupo, a 300 level student of Chemistry and Itodo Ene Patience, a 400 level student of Pharmacy, in his office.

The Vice-Chancellor said that the massive internet coverage would afford staff and students the uninterrupted use of the facility at any point in time to communicate with all parts of the world regardless of the time-zone.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, the areas to be covered in this phase of the University’s ICT revolution include the staff quarters on campus and in the GRA , student hostels on the University campuses as well as academic areas and offices.

Prof. Ambali disclosed that the Computer Services and Information Technology (COMSIT) Unit and the University management were working harmoniously towards ensuring that members of the University community can always be in touch with all parts of the world anywhere they are and at anytime, whether they are on the road or at home.

While congratulating the University Google Ambassadors on their achievements, the Vice- Chancellor said that the management of the University as well as the entire University community were very proud of the students. He noted that the University management would want other students to emulate that kind of achievement so that the whole world would see why Unilorin is better by far.

Prof. Ambali disclosed that he and other members of the University management are always happy to empower the students with whatever they may require so that the world would acknowledge the University as an important part and a major player in the academic global village.

Presenting the report on behalf of the duo, Olasupo urged the University management to help in supporting their upcoming programmes in the 2014/ 2015 session.

The two students, who were chosen after a competitive selection process conducted by Google, told Unilorin Bulletin that they had lined up a number of activities for the 2014/2015 academic session. These include, registration of Google Students’ Club; Career Service and Empowerment; Google+ Hangout on Air with notable personalities drawn from within and outside the country; Unilorin Geo Walk/Mapping Event; Introduction of Google opportunities (Google Cloud Developers Challenge, Google Online Marketing Challenge, Youtube monetization, and Google Students’ Ambassador Programme) .

According to the Google Ambassadors, the other activities are: Google Mobile Event, training on Unilorin Android Apps, Google Apps for Education Training (Gmail, Google Maps, Google+, Google Calendar and Google Drive) for University and Secondary School students.

The duo, however, noted that to make a success of these activities, they would require support from the University’s management in the provision of 24-hour internet access on event days; free venues to be used for the events, and facilities like sound system, and projector.

They pointed out that the programmes would give students the opportunity to create google products, which can earn them $250 each, earn money from youtube and create platforms for more students of the University to become Google Student Ambassadors.

With the Vice-Chancellor at the ceremony were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Prof Y. M. Fakunle; the Deputy Vice- Chancellor (Academic), Prof. N. Y. S. Ijaiya; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), Prof. G. A. Olatunji; and the University Librarian, Dr. J. O. Omoniyi.
