Vice President Namadi Sambo has been criticised for whipping up religious sentiments in a last-minute move to increase the chances of the Peoples Democratic Party in the forthcoming presidential poll.

Amid a call on politicians to restrain from divisive statements, the PDP’s presidential running mate, on Wednesday, at a rally in Minna, Niger State, said the ruling party was more Muslim-friendly than the opposition All Progressives Congress.

Sambo, in a video posted on You Tube, said whereas the APC presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) was encircled by Christians, while key stakeholders of PDP, except President Goodluck Jonathan, were Muslims.

He urged the party supporters to dismiss anybody who would tell them that APC was more Muslim-friendly than PDP. PDP, he claimed, had an advantage if religion became a yardstick for choosing which candidate to vote for during the February 14 poll.

“Our chairman, Adamu Mu’azu, is a Muslim, the Director General of the campaign organisation, Ahmadu Ali, is also a Muslim. I am a Muslim. It is only our presidential candidate that is a Christian,” he said.

Amidst a burst of excitement from the gathering, Sambo continued, “In APC, its National Chairman is a Christian, its Presidential Campaign Director General is a Christian and the vice presidential candidate is a pastor.”

The supporters, who were fascinated by the sentiment, yelled PDP in response to Sambo’s question, “Which between the two parties has more Muslims?”

Noting that Nigeria belongs to all, Sambo who spoke in Hausa, said adherents of both religions had always worked together for the development of the country.

masciv: People should not be quick to judge the Nigerian Military. Even as most of them are irresponsible, there are still many good soldiers among. You say the Cameroon military is more effective but you didn't look at the part where 16 people died in order to rescue 1 person. In war, there's collateral damage and if your collateral damage is too great, despite winning such a war, you've lost woefully. Imagine if the girls are to be rescued by the same faction of the Cameronian military, how many people do you think might die? I'm not supporting the Nigerian military as the soldiers procrastinate a lot and are also largely mediocre at their duty but I'm trying to make you see reason why you shouldn't be quick to judge.

call me cynic but I am sceptical that all the girls will survive via a direct confrontation the only way to ensure survival is exchange but that is not an option too
