Foreign AffairsObama Weeps Over Connecticut Shooting by murphylee08(op): 1:29pm On Dec 15, 2012
There have been many dramatic and emotional moments at the White House — but few have been as wrenching as this.

President Obama fought to keep his composure and repeatedly wiped away tears as he addressed the nation about the horror inside a Connecticut grade school.

“Our hearts are broken today,” he said.

He spoke not just as a President, but as a father.

“I know there’s not a parent in America who doesn’t feel the same overwhelming grief that I do,” Obama said. “The majority of those who died today were children — beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old.”

They had their entire lives ahead of them – birthdays, graduations, kids of their own,” President Obama said during an emotional press conference about the deadly shooting at a Connecticut elementary school.

The President then stopped and remained silent for a full 12 seconds to compose himself.

When he summoned the strength to speak again, he lamented the bright futures that had been abruptly lost.

“They had their entire lives ahead of them — birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own,” he said.

And then he stopped again. And wiped an eye.

The emotional, four-minute address showcased a side of Obama the public has rarely seen. Even some cable TV commentators who are never at a loss for words seemed stunned.

In the days before his November 2008 election, Obama cried while remembering his late grandmother, but his public persona is that of a cool, even detached, leader.

The sudden outpouring recalled another dark hour in the nation’s history — President George W. Bush’s heartbreak in the frantic first days after the Sept. 11 attacks.

Before his address, Obama signed an order directing that flags at federal buildings across the nation and the world be flown at half-staff as tribute to those lost.

Obama spoke about the rampage from a room named after the victim of another high-profile shooting — the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room. Brady was the press secretary who was shot and paralyzed in the 1981 assassination attempt on former President Ronald Reagan.

As Obama fought back tears, two of his aides stood nearby, clutching hands, openly weeping.

The President promised unspecified “meaningful action” in the weeks ahead to prevent yet more shooting tragedies.

But, most immediately, he said he would do what “every parent in America will do, which is hug our children a little tighter and we’ll tell them that we love them.”

The President, the father of two daughters, wiped away another tear, and then added, “But there are families in Connecticut who cannot do that tonight. And they need all of us right now.”

PoliticsMastermind In Okonjo Kidnap Shot Dead In Asaba – Police by murphylee08(op): 8:31am On Dec 15, 2012
The Police in Delta have reported that the alleged mastermind behind the kidnap of Prof Kanene Okonjo, mother of the coordinating minister of the economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been killed.

According to Punch, the 82-year-old was released and dropped off near her home at about 10 am on Friday after five days with the kidnappers.

“A few hours after Okonjo reunited with her family at the palace of the Obi of Ogwashi-Ukwu, the police in Delta State shed light on the circumstances that led to her release.

“The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikechukwu Aduba, said there had been a bloody shootout between his men and the kidnappers in Asaba, the state capital, which had resulted in the rescue of the kidnap victim.

“During the encounter, a suspected kidnap kingpin, Mr. Nwazor Nwose, aka Bolaji, believed to have masterminded the abduction, was shot dead by security agents.

“In a meeting with journalists in Asaba, Aduba described Nwose as a notorious kidnapper who had been arraigned in court on a previous kidnap charge in Delta State and granted bail.”

“Nwose was arrested a few months ago, investigated and arraigned in court for kidnapping and was released on bail by the court,” Nwose said. “But he returned to Asaba and continued his nefarious activities.

“This time, he met his Waterloo. Combined detectives from the IGP taskforce and that of the State Police Command swung into action and invaded his hideout. Immediately he sighted the police he jumped a very high fence. Our men had no option; we had to obey the rule of engagement and opened fire on him.

“He continued, but eventually we got him by trailing the blood stain. We rushed him to Federal Medical Centre, Asaba where he gave up the ghost.

“Notwithstanding, four members of the gang were picked up. Two have been indicted so far. Another notorious criminal called Bright is in our custody. The names of the other gang members are Hard Rock, Tse-tse fly, and Tipper Boy.”

Nwose has been head of a kidnap ring that has operated in Delta and kidnapped an businessman in Asaba last year.

Aduba however said they refused to attack the hideout of the kidnappers in Kwale, Ndokwa West LGA because of the victims age – and she was brought back to the palace on a motorcycle early yesterday morning hale and hearty.

“We knew the victim was in Kwale, but we were very cautious not to invade the town so that she would not be harmed. We waited patiently and continued to monitor the area. Mama was brought in this morning by a motorcycle,” he said.
