Life expectancy in Nigeria is about 56 years.

Most Nigerians die before the age of 56.

We live longer than those before us. Most of our ancestors couldn't even make it to 25.

It was why people had many children because they definitely expected most to not make it past the age of 2.

Also, in economics, nothing concerns us with whether you have 2 or 5 dependents. If you choose to have 5 dependents in 2024, that's your poor choice.

If you earn 500,000 naira monthly outside the posh areas of Lagos and Abuja, you cannot be classified as poor.

30% of 6,000,000 = 1,800,000 naira per annum for shelter/rent (Half of this can get you a decent 2-bedroom apartment in most Nigerian cities).

20% of 6,000,000 = 1,200,000 naira per annum for food.

You'll still have about 3,000,000 naira remaining for your wants and savings.

That means three million naira remaining for your wants and savings.

Put differently, if you're earning 500,000 naira a month, and you allocate 150,000 naira for rent and 100,000 naira for food, you'll still have 250,000 naira for wants and savings.

That's not being poor by any standard.
