CareerPrison Inmate Bags Second Class Upper Degree From National Open University Of Ni by nagod5(op): 2:51pm On Feb 11, 2015
A prison inmate, Theophilus Adeniyi, has received a second class upper degree in Peace studies and Conflict Resolution from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).

Adeniyi, an inmate awaiting trial, is a pioneer student of NOUN at its Enugu Prison study centre. He was on Tuesday presented the certificate by the Controller-General of the Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS), Peter Ekpendu, at the first convocation of the centre.

Ekpendu commended Adeniyi for making the NPS proud and promised to continue to encourage inmates to reach their potentials in whatever trade they chose.

He said the intensity of academic activities the inmates were engaged in was a clear testimony that the future of the country was bright.

Ekpendu said that the healthy condition of the inmates was an indication that the authorities were actualizing their mandate, which was to keep prisoners safe, sound and in good condition.

In a citation, the Deputy Controller of Prisons, Enugu State Command, Felix Lawrence, said that the graduand made a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.36.

Lawrence said that Adeniyi was a final year political science student at Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) when he was arrested and charged to court over a communal crisis.

The Coordinator of the study centre, Ladan Babankodong, extolled Adeniyi’s virtues, saying that he was a shining example.

In a remark, the graduate said that he was elated to have completed his university education in spite of obvious challenges.

“I promise that I shall at all times uphold the legacies of NOUN and also be a good ambassador.

Just few months to my final degree examination in ESUT, I was set up and roped into the matter that I am currently facing trial for, but today I thank God I am a graduate,” Adeniyi said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Adeniyi, who was one of the 54 students in the centre, bagged three awards from NOUN, including a N50,000 cash award as the best student.

Out-of-contract Nigeria boss Stephen Keshi has claimed he has not been approached by the Nigeria Football Federation over a new contract to take charge of the team. Goal reported on Tuesday that the NFF’s Technical Committee head, Felix Anyansi-Agwu, stated that the coach had been approached and offered a contract.

However, the 53-year-old trainer has rejected the claims made by the NFF and stated that he is unaware of their plans.

“Nobody has called me about any meeting or anything about a contract,” Keshi was quoted by SportingLife.

“I am not aware of anything of the sort. And no one has talked to me about a renewal of contract.

“As of now, no one has called me. Maybe later or tomorrow but for now, none has called me for any contract talks,” he said.

After working without a contract since the end of the World Cup in June 2014, Keshi was asked to leave by the NFF during qualifying for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations only to be recalled due to pressure from President Goodluck Jonathan.

The Technical Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation has recommended a renewal of contract for Stephen Keshi as the senior national team head coach. The committee led by Emeka Anyansi-Agwu concluded their meeting and tabled their recommendation to the executive board of NFF in due course.

Anyansi, who disclosed this to media at the headquarters of NFF, stated that the delay in the contract renewal was to enable the committee do a thorough job in a bid to get the best option.

He also explained that the committee has been in contact with the coach contrary to media reports where Keshi was quoted to have denied any approach by the committee.

According to Anyansi, “If anyone is saying that he has not been paid for about two months that he handled the team without contract, that cannot be true. Keshi is my personal friend and we don’t hold anything against him.”

Keshi, who has been out of contract since the end of the Super Eagles’ 2014 World Cup campaign, failed to qualify Nigeria for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea two years after he led the team to win the 2013 title.

Even though he has come under intense criticism by figures like former coach Amodu Shaibu and ex-player Jonathan Akpoborie among many others, Keshi has been able to get a new contract due to the influence of President Goodluck Jonathan who asked the NFF to keep him on after he was sacked late in 2014.http://m.goal.com/x/en-ng/news/8812762
