Politics › Re: Senate Presidency: Niger Delta Stakeholders Reject Akpabio by Nelsononu: 8:01pm On Apr 27, 2023 |
newschannel247: Niger Delta Stakeholders in the All Progressives Congress APC have called on the leadership and critical stakeholders of the party from the region to support credible and a team player as the country’s next President of the Senate for the sake of equity, fairness, and justice.
The group noted that the 2023 general elections have created deep gully and division across the country, hence there is an urgent need to give every region sense of belonging and set off the process of total healing and reconciliation in the country.
The group which styles itself as Niger Delta Stakeholders for Equity and Justice (NDSEJ) disclosed this in a press statement after its meeting held at Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, on Monday, noted that the nation cannot attend the desired peace and development without equity and justice in the distribution of political offices.
The statement which was signed by the Convener of the NDSEJ, Chief Alfred Ebikeme, and its Secretary, Prince Victor Ogie Osagie, appealed to APC leaders from the zone to consider and support a southerner to emerge the Senate president.
According to the group, “We believe in politics of equity, fairness, and justice and that is why we are calling our leaders from the Niger Delta region to support a credible, resourceful person who will not lord over the people as the next senate president.
“Though we have one of our own, the immediate past Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio who is reported to be eyeing the Senate presidency of the 10th National Assembly, however, his last outing as a supervising Minister over the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC left a sour taste in our mouth.
“It’s on record that under his watch, Senator Akpabio blatantly refused to run the NDDC with a functional board, instead, he opted for sole administrators thereby shutting out the entire leadership of the region in the administration of the Commission, the consequence of this is that the people of the Niger Delta were starved of good and quality representation in the NDDC board.
“We think that at this critical time of our national history, where we are divided along religious and ethnic divides, the Senate leadership that we need is a man that believes in teamwork and not a superman who will lord over other leaders and colleagues because, in the national assembly, it will need a great deal of teamwork to pull a bill through.
“What Nigeria needs urgently in the National Assembly is purpose-driven, visionary, selfless, and people-oriented leadership, to make informed and relevant laws that will better the lives of Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora.
“We should not forget in a hurry how the Saraki and Buhari frosty relationship impinged on governance in President Buhari’s first tenure, we can’t afford a repeat of that in the Tinubu-led government, that will be too much baggage and a drag.”

spearman: The difference is some people have pride and dignity. ©️ Joe Igbokwe
In 1979, the SW voted against Shagari in the Federal Elections . He won and their leader, Awo, went into opposition with dignity and did NOT BEG for so called FAIRNESS and EQUITY. What did the Igbos do? They did a deal with Shagari and were rewarded with the Speaker of the House of Reps from NPP - Azikiwe's party. So we Had President Shehu Shagari, Sokoto State, Vice President, Alex Ekwueme from Anambra State. Senate President, Joseph Wayas- Cross River State. Speaker, House of Representatives Edwin Ume-Ezeoke from Anambra State. The Yoruba were proud and dignified in opposition. Not for one day, begginng for seats or sympathy. They are not desperate to be in the centre sharing yam. They accepted the CONSEQUENCES of their voting choices, with dignity. They did not scream about equity and fairness. One state , One people Had the VP and Speaker and no Yoruba called them "GREEDY" or BETRAYERS.It has happened before. It is not new!! The difference is some people have pride and dignity. ©️ Joe Igbokwe shameless man who forgot his people |
Politics › Re: Reno Omokri Gives Reasons Why Nigerians Fleeing Sudan Were Rejected In Ethiopia by Nelsononu: 7:59pm On Apr 27, 2023 |
opamoses1: I see a lot of Nigerians making much of a muchness about Ethiopia allowing some other African nationals to seek refuge in Ethiopia via their land borders with Sudan, but stopping Nigerian citizens. It is not as a lot of us see it.
I have been to Ethiopia 17 times. If you know what some of our citizens (sadly, almost all from a particular geopolitical zone) have done there, you may even start to pity the Ethiopian government.
Ethiopia was forced to withdraw visa on arrival for Nigerian citizens in October of 2022.
Their prisons are full of Nigerians. They are just trying to resolve an internal existential crisis. As a matter of fact, the excuse they gave for withdrawing that privilege for Nigeria was because it "is aimed at better border control of movement of persons into Ethiopia in view of the ongoing armed conflict in the Northern part of the country."
It is easy to want to make Nigerian refugees Ethiopia's problem. But quite frankly, Ethiopia has more than enough problems to resolve right now. Our government has to step up and sit up.
For example, there are tens of thousands of Ethiopians from the Tigray region who are themselves refugees in Sudan, due to the Ethiopia-Tigray conflict. And Chad has closed her borders with Sudan. Egypt is looking like it wants to go that route.
As such, the priorities of the Ethiopians would be their own citizens first, and then members of their own subregional body, IGAD, before others.
This is not new, strange, or inhumane. It is exactly what happened when war broke out in Ukraine. The Ukrainian border guards prioritised their own citizens seeking to flee. Next came other Eastern Europeans, then the rest of the world. And then, just as now, Nigerians complained.
As a people, we Nigerians must really stop thinking emotionally, and start thinking strategically. We are after all a country that kicked out half a million Ghanaians during President Shagari's Ghana-must-go purge. And we did it at a time when Ghana was going through political upheaval.

Politics › Re: BREAKING: FG Suspends Fuel Subsidy Removal by Nelsononu: 7:58pm On Apr 27, 2023 |
Bobloco: The National Economic Council, on Thursday, in Abuja, said it has agreed that petrol subsidy should “not be removed” as earlier planned for June 2023.
The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, disclosed this to State House correspondents shortly after the valedictory Council meeting presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Ahmed said the Council agreed on the need for continued discussions on the issue adding that the FG, together with states and representatives of the incoming administration, require more preparatory work.
She said, “Council agreed that the timing of the removal of fuel subsidy should not be now. But that we should continue with all of the preparatory works that need to be done and that this preparatory has to be done in consultation with the states and other key stakeholders including representatives of the incoming administration.
“Council agreed that the fuel subsidy must be removed earlier rather than later because it is not sustainable. We cannot afford it anymore. But we have to do it in such a way that the impact of the subsidy is as much as possible, mitigated on the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
“So, this will require looking at alternatives to the fuel subsidy that needs to be planned for and subsequently put in place. But also what needs to be done to support the people that will be most affected as a result of the removal.”
Ahmed added that the FG will be working together with representatives of the states between now and June 2023.
“We have a plan that we will start working on, putting the building blocks towards the eventual removal of the first subsidy.
“And if I may remind this forum that the budget for 2023 has a provision for fuel subsidy only up to June 2023 and also the Petroleum Industry Act has a provision that requires that all petroleum products must be deregulated 18 months after the effective date of the PMS removal and that that period is also up to June 2020,” the minister explained.
