A hate group on Facebook has vowed to make sure Nigerians leave South Africa or they would all be killed.

Not yet satisfied with their xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and their businesses in South Africa, some extremist youths have gone ahead to threaten to kill Nigerians if they refuse to leave their country.

They have gone ahead to create a Facebook group called 'Get Nigerian Drug Dealers out of SA' and in just a few days, the group has gathered over 5,000 members and they all want one thing: to force Nigerians out of their country by all means.

All the members preach hatred for Nigerians whom they see as drug lords, scammers, kidnappers, armed robbers and the one corrupting their women who have now turned to prostitution at the behest of the Nigerians.

A post by the administrator of the group tells it all and they are all up in arms against Nigerians.

"The Nigerian drug lords need to be run out of town; they are slowing creeping into other suburbs... A friend last night found a group of them selling their 'wares' on a pavement opposite her house.

She took photos of the scene and send it to the SAPS WhatsApp. They claimed that the Ford Focus was broken down and they were waiting for the tow truck. She stated that if that was indeed the case, then, they would not mind her taking photos of activities.

The men verbally abused her. Despite them trying to mishandle her physically, she captured the photos of the Nigerians drinking from the boots of their cars etc.

She persisted and stated that she was going to publish the photos...in seconds they 'escaped' from the scene; even the Ford Focus that was waiting for a tow truck.

Nigerians are criminals and they are living on borrowed time.

Let's start a campaign - #Nigeriancriminals must FALL."

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has said it will hold a nationwide protest on Thursday to draw global attention to the attacks in Nigerians by south Africans.

The student body in a statement by its national president, Comr kadiri Aruna described the xenophobic attacks as sad and unfortunate.

He said in the last one week hundreds of Nigerians have been brutally murdered and their homes and businesses looted and burnt down.

"It is sad that South Africa has taken pleasure ones again in killing and destroying properties of our fellow Africans and Nigerians in particular. In the last one week hundreds of Nigerians have been brutally murdered and their homes and businesses looted and burnt down.

He said, “I want to call on all Nigerian Students to as a matter of urgency mobilise down to Abuja tomorrow the 23rd of Feb for a mass protest and massive attack on the properties and businesses owned by South Africa. The Senate meeting has been shifted to accommodate our response on the madness pepertrated by SA.

“Let us all prepare for we are ready to put a stop to this madness. Let us remind them that we contributed a great percentage to the peace and freedom they are enjoying today.”

The Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR) has condemned a planned march against immigrants and the recent outbreak of xenophobic violence in certain parts of the country.

The march is planned for February 24, however, it is not clear who has planned it, the institute said on Tuesday.

"There are pamphlets making the rounds in Pretoria and on social media about the planned march," it said.

"Between 2008 and 2016, South Africa witnessed unprecedented levels of violence against foreign nationals which resulted in the loss of lives, the destruction of property and an overall collapse of trust within communities across the country," the institute said.

IJR has called upon the authorities to remain vigilant, with regards to the planned events of Friday, and to "prevent a repeat of xenophobic violence".

The institute said the government should take the necessary steps to protect foreign nationals.



On Saturday, violence broke out in Pretoria West, as community members vowed to rid the area of drugs and prostitution.Angry residents raided what they called drug dens, telling the tenants they did not want them living there.

They also called for "pimps" to release prostitutes and send them back home.

Armed police monitored the situation, while residents, some armed with sticks and rods, roamed the streets.

Two houses, an alleged drug den and a brothel, were gutted earlier in the morning.

At least 10 houses suspected of belonging to drug lords and brothel owners were set alight during a protest in Rosettenville last week.

"There is an urgent need for the South African government to address the systemic inefficiencies that lead to xenophobic violence.

"Community leaders and government officials should avoid using inflammatory xenophobic language which further fuels xenophobic attitudes," said IJR.

The South African Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Police said Monday the xenophobic attacks on foreigners by South Africans in Rosettenville and Pretoria West could be avoided if the police responded timely to complaints by the community.

At least 15 Nigerian residents' houses were burnt last weeek in Rosettenville community and Pretoria West.

The South Africans accuse Nigerians of selling drugs and making young girls sell their bodies. Last weekend over six houses were burnt in Pretoria West. Police said they have arrested six suspects with the burning of houses belonging to foreigners.

The Portfolio Committee on Police said if the police had build trust with the community the tragedy could be avoided.



The Committee Chairperson Francois Beukman said, "Cluster and station commanders should ensure that the trust between the community and SAPS (South African Police Service) is strengthened through proactive steps, such as constant visible policing, the deployment of specialized units, better coordination of crime intelligence units and improved relations with Community Policing Forums, as well as improving response time to crime complaints by members of the public."

The police was accused of not responding to complaints by the community about drugs being sold in Rosettenville. Beukman expressed concern over the losing of trust on the police by the people. The survey released by the Statistics South Africa this month show that people have lost trust in the police.

He said, "We cannot allow citizens' trust in law enforcement agencies to erode any further. It is patently clear that urgent interventions are needed at certain police stations in the Republic."

The cluster and station management of Rosettenville police are expected to tell the Parliamentary Committee on Wednesday how they are dealing with xenophobic attacks in their area.

The committee also called on the police management to investigate of all complaints of police misconduct and alleged corruption.

As xenophobic violence rears its head again in South Africa, a widely quoted figure of how many Nigerians live in South Africa is completely unsupported.

Xenophobic unrest has flared up in parts of South Africa once again, with incidents of looting and violence reported in Johannesburg and Pretoria.

The Nigerian government is said to have asked the African Union to intervene in the violence targeted at its own nationals. News reports documenting this repeatedly quote a figure of "around 800,000 Nigerians living in South Africa".

The figure has previously been attributed to the spokesman for the Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA).

Is it validated by current data?



Nigerian Union uses 'approximated figure'

NUSA spokesman, Eneka Ezinteje, told Africa Check that the 800,000 figure is an "approximated figure based on projections from current data".

The union issues each member with an ID card and collects data on the number of Nigerians from its 76 wards scattered across the country. The NUSA ID card is only issued to Nigerian passport holders.

But Ezinteje couldn't confirm the exact number of ID cards issued by NUSA and whether every Nigerian living in South Africa (including naturalised South Africans) have the ID card.

2016 data shows just over 30,000 Nigerians in SA

The most recent data on how many Nigerians (and other foreign-born migrants) are living in South Africa is to be found in Statistics South Africa's 2016 Community Survey.

It estimated that 30,314 people - or roughly 2% of foreign-born people living in South Africa - are from Nigeria. South Africa's 2011 census found this figure to be 26,341. The United Nation's estimate for 2015 was even lower, at 17,753. (Note: In a blog post, University of Cape Town demography professor Tom Moultrie explains how these estimates were calculated and why they differ.)


"There is absolutely no way that this claim is true," Loren Landau, a research professor based at the African Centre for Migration and Society, told Africa Check.

"If you look at Statistics South Africa data, there are only about 1.5 to 2 million international migrants in total in the country. Although these figures are undoubtedly imperfect, they are better than any other data out there."

Conclusion: No data supports claim that 800,000 Nigerians live in SA


The Nigerian Union South Africa did not provide data to back up their claim that 800,000 Nigerians are living in South Africa.

Available estimates from Statistics South Africa and the United Nations show just over 30,000 Nigerians in South Africa. Although these figures are imperfect, they come nowhere close 800,000.
