Main Local news LOCAL NEWS Just in: FG, labour adjourn meeting to Monday, January 7 40 minutes ago 4963 views by Aanu Adegun - Negotiation by the federal government with Organise Labour will continue on Monday, January 7 - NLC had threaten to embark on a nationwide protest on January 8 to make government transmit the tripartite committee report on the N30,000 minimum wage to the National Assembly - The labour ultimatum followed President Muhammadu Buhari’s statement that a high powered technical committee would be set up to study the report before transmitting to the legislatures The federal government says it will continue negotiation with Organise Labour on Monday, January 7, to prevent the threat of strike over non transmission of the new national minimum wage to the national assembly. Chris Ngige, minister of Labour and Employment said this after meeting with the labour leaders on Friday, January 4, in Abuja. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the National Executive Council of the NLC had threaten to embark on a nationwide protest on Jan. 8 to make government transmit the tripartite committee report on the N30,000 minimum wage to the National Assembly. The labour ultimatum followed President Muhammadu Buhari’s statement that a high powered technical committee would be set up to study the report before transmitting to the legislatures. Buhari said the technical committee would device ways to ensure that the new wage implementation did not lead to an increase in the level of borrowing. Ngige said: “We are continuing the meeting on Monday and we are making progress. We have made substantial progress. That is progress in terms of transmission of the new national minimum wage. “So, we are discussing on ways to fast track and we are taking appropriate steps as required by us by law. “Mr President is more committed to this as he was the one that set of the Tripartite Committee on the minimum wage and even inaugurated them and also put in all the resources,” he said. Ngige earlier had said the meeting was called as a result of the communique issued by the joint Labour Centres in Lagos. “That is when you informed government that you are not happy with the implementation processes of the report of the tripartite committee. So government decided to meet with you today and brief you fully on all we have been doing. “If you have questions, you ask us so that we can be on the same page because Mr President is determined to give a minimum wage to Nigerian workers. But in doing so, he has to do a minimum wage that can be sustainable. “In doing that, it means that we have to do a proper process in what we have to do. The national minimum wage is an existing act that need amendment. So, it is not a question of only money. “There are things that we need to do before sending the bill to the National Assembly and do it in a way to maintain the sustainable status of the minimum wage. This why we have called you and for you to suggest to us. “Also we will like to hear your own views or what we should add so that we can fast track the process,” he said. He added that: “We are aware that when the bill get to the National Assembly, it becomes the business of all of us, including the public.” Mr Ayuba Wabba, President, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) said organised Labour believed in social dialogue in resolving industrial relations. “We have had a social dialogue bothering on the national minimum wage as you are aware and the meeting decided to adjourn and reconvene on Monday for us to do further consultations before the issues are concluded. “We have discussed all the issues and all the areas particularly how we can ensure that the issue is put behind us. That is why we took such a long time, including having a time out to consult. “But we have not been able to conclude and we have agreed to reconvene to tidy The process. The issue at stake is to make sure that the bill is transmitted and also other auxiliary issues that government says they are trying to put together. The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, says the lingering strike action of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), might soon come to an end as the leadership of the union and the Federal government have reached a partial agreement. Recall that the academic union began their strike action on November 5th to demand better funding for the Education sector. Speaking after a reconciliation meeting with the union yesterday December 10th, the Minister told newsmen that the strike would soon be called off as efforts are being made to meet the demands of the union. “We have finished our deliberation. I am happy to report that we touched some areas of understanding in implementation from the memorandum of action which we agreed to in 2017. Some of these areas we have substantial compliance and some other areas have not been fully dealt with. Like the issue of shortfall in salaries of some federal universities’ workers and lecturers, ASUU has given a list to the accountant-general’s office and we have agreed that by Wednesday that list should be cross-checked by the presidential initiative on continuous auditing. So, the accountant-general’s office is to get back to us by Wednesday. “We also have the issue of earned allowances, revitalisation, these are issues of 2009 agreement and partial implementation and we have agreed on the modus operandi to look into the fund situation, this is due to low revenue on the part of government. We have agreed on what we are going to do to make sure that the outstanding amount is handled in a way that all parties will be properly accommodated. We also discussed the issue of state universities and agreed also that even if education is on the concurrent list, the universities should be properly funded and staffed so that we do not produce half-baked students from those universities. In realisation of this, the ministry of education will set up a committee, that would engage the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, and the minister of education has taken steps in that direction to formalise the interaction. Thus discussion are fruitful and we do hope that in the next adjourned date we would have had the requisite result on the few agreements reached today.” he said read more https://www.naijapuse.com.ng/2018/12/we-have-reached-partial-agreement-with.html |

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has accused the University of Lagos Pro-chancellor, Dr Wale Babalakin of intimidating its members. The ASUU National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, who made the allegation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, advised Babalakin to end the alleged high-handedness in the interest of university education. “Our attention has been drawn to the way the pro-chancellor, Dr Wale Babalakin, is ruling the University of Lagos. “We have also been informed of the various antics he has been trying to use against our members since the commencement of our current struggle. “Our members are fighting a just cause, and we are convinced that history will vindicate us. “Those who are coming up with policies that will make the children of the poor to be poorer should remember that the rich will not be able to sleep when the poor are angry,” he warned. He urged ASUU members in the university not to succumb to alleged harassment and intimidation by the pro-chancellor. The Chairman of ASUU, Lagos Zone, Prof. Olusiji Sowade, had in a statement on Sunday alleged that the pro-chancellor had been meddlesome and dictatorial. He said that Babalakin’s convening of a town hall meeting with the Non Academic Staff of the University (NASU) on Sept. 26 violated extant laws and traditions of the 56-year-old institution. “The latest antics is his letter to Heads of Departments and Deans of Faculties, inviting them to a meeting on Dec. 11. “This represents another violation of the university norm and rabid desire to scuttle the ongoing strike by union,” the zonal chairman said. Reacting in a telephone interview with NAN, Babalakin said that he had yet to be aware of what the ASUU members were talking about as he just returned from abroad. “I just arrived into the country. I am yet to see the statement by the union and I am not aware of what the union is talking about,” he said. readmore https://www.naijapuse.com.ng/2018/12/unilag-pro-chancellor-wale-babalakin.html |
