Aki and Pawpaw

DUBAI -- Two African street kids being plucked from obscurity to become the toast of the continent sounds like something from a far-fetched film plot. But that's exactly what happened to the Nigerian dwarfs known as Aki and Pawpaw, the stars of the film of the same name.

Still, such is the fame of the Nigerian film industry (dubbed Nollywood by the New York Times) that it's not only African kings and politicians who come a knocking to request the pleasure of Aki and Pawpaw's company. Now Hollywood is standing at Nollywood's door.

Nigerian author Chinmanda Ngozi Adiche's novel "Half of a Yellow Sun" has been acquired by the producers of "The Last King of Scotland," which told the story of the Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, as per Nollywood sources, while Focus Features has picked up rights to the Off-Broadway musical "Fela Kuti" about the African beat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti who became a legendary funk musician in the US. before going back to Nigeria where he was frequently harassed and imprisoned. Focus is readying a film being written by Nigeria's Misan Sagay.

"Yellow Sun" covers a seminal moment in modern African history, namely Biafra's struggle to establish an independent republic in Nigeria, and the terrible violence that followed.

Nollywood is, of course, Nigeria's guerilla film industry, which produces not only stars of legendary proportions but about 2,000 films a year. It also is the second-largest employer in a country where, a blockbuster is likely to be a film about the wrongdoings of the government.

"Peace Mission," the film which tells the Nollywood story, is screening here at the Dubai International Film Festival where it makes it Middle East premiere as part of the Cinema of AsiaAfrica section.

"We don't need other stars, we have our own," said the film's narrator and guide, Peace Aniyam-Fiberesima who is in town with German director Dorothee Wenner to promote the film.

Aniyam-Fiberesima knows of what she speaks. A filmmaker, TV star and the founder of the African Movie Academy Awards, she said, "People asked me why I was launching the awards when there is starvation, war, AIDS revolution."

"But, thanks to Nollywood, we have stars," she said. "There was a revolution that came with digital filmmaking and you can see the results right here."

Beyond homing in on its stories, Hollywood also could learn a thing or two about distribution from Nollywood, whose films have become a runaway success the straight-to-DVD model. "Nollywood has created a mass market via DVD in a place where the average salary is around $100 a month," Aniyam-Fiberesima said. "Across most of Africa people can't go to big cinemas. There are large families of 10 or more people, and tickets costs $10 a ticket."

CelebritiesThere Is Nothing Between I And Genevieve……ramsey Nouah by nownow(op): 2:22pm On Dec 15, 2008
How many movies have you made?

I have appeared in more than 100 movies. But I have not been counting to be exact with the numbers. I shoot movies as they come.

Which is your best film?

Dangerous Twins (2004) You don’t look like Nigerian.

Can you tell us more about your parentage?

I am a product of mixed blood. My father is half Israeli and half Iranian. My mother is a Yoruba. I was born and raised in Nigeria, so I am Nigerian.

And your family?

My wife is Emike Philips Nouah. I have two children, a boy, six, and a girl, four. I also have a child out of wedlock who lives with her mother in the States. My wife is a very understanding woman and she knows I am in film as a profession. Some people think that the fact we are TV faces means we don’t deserve to have families – but I can say that there is a lot other women have to learn from my wife.

What values do you attach to family?

Responsibility. When you father children, you have to take good care of them and be there for them.

How do you balance work and family?

Work can be very tedious. But as I make things happen, I also put my family together. I keep on communicating with my family wherever I am. I try to be with them when I am not working, for example I can spare two weeks to be with my children and wife.

Have you ever watched an Uganda movie?

No. May be one of these days. But many of them are in the vernacular. [I tell him we have movies in English and some with subtitles] I will look out for one in English or with subtitles.

What’s the impression you got of Uganda movie awards?

Being the maiden edition, the event was well-done. It was interesting and I was impressed by the outcome. But I hope the future events will be better.

What do you think are your greatest assets when it comes to acting?

I don’t have any. I close my eyes and act.

And what can’t you live without?

A phone. I have to remain in communication with family and business partners. But I am not attached to a given phone as long as it is a good phone.

Apart from acting, what else do you do?

I help with humanitarian efforts. I help out NGOs who think I can help raise their cause like leukaemia patients and poverty.

Who is Nigeria’s top movie person?

No. Please. They are all my friends. They are talented.

Word has it that you had an intimate relationship with Genevieve.

People who see us acting in movies have married us. They say we are meant for each other but, the truth is, we just act. There is nothing between us. But I should say Genny is a very talented actress.

There are rumours that you shared a bed with Sheila Nvannungi. What do you say about that?

Who is that? [ I explain that she is the singer who reportedly shared a room with him ]. Okay, the singer. I don’t know what they are talking about. I saw that lady and I thought she was one of the organisers since they were putting us together and told us to take photos. I didn’t know she was a singer. They just put her by my side and I don’t understand why.

You promised to work with Ugandans to make movies. Can you elaborate on that?

We are planning to do some stuff as Nollywood. It is not me alone. Nollywood film makers want to see Uganda on the map of African movie makers. This means, us coming here to make films and Ugandans going to Nigeria for the same purpose.

While you sat with the Vice President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, what did you share with him about the movie industry?

He is very appreciative of the Uganda movie industry. He wants to help to curb piracy which is a very good thing. It is important that people watch non pirated movies and investors can then see they can make profits. I was very impressed about such a remark.
CelebritiesIt Takes Hard Work To Get Into Bed With Me….benita Nzeribe by nownow(op): 10:46am On Dec 15, 2008
What have you been up to, it seems you have disappear?
I didn’t disappear. I took leave to do some other business. I can’t go into those things now.

Are those things outside of showbiz?
You don’t worry about that but I’ll be back in January.

When was the last time you were part of a movie?
It was about four months ago.

Are those other businesses fetching you money as movies?
Movies do not fetch the kind of money people think. But I am doing well.

But I know most of your colleagues that claim they earn exorbitant fee.
Let’s not go into that my dear, but what I meant is that nobody can is earning the kind of fee obtainable in Hollywood.

Why did you relocate to Abuja?
I’ve not relocated yet, but I’ve been visiting Abuja regularly of late because of what I’m doing.

How has it been not going to location for the past four months?
It’s been beautiful. I’m very busy but I will be back by January.

What gives you the assurance that you would take your place when you come back?
Nobody can take my place because I don’t have a photocopy. I don’t really believe in all these competition things. I do the best I can and leave the rest. I have created scarcity for my block of fans so when I come back I’ll just take my place.

Which have been your most challenging movies?
I really don’t have most challenging movies but when you do some traditional movies they take a lot from you. When you are acting, you live that role and it is not easy to live another life. That is the way I view my job. That alone make them challenging.

How easy is it not to have an hangover?
That is why you are a professional. That is why everybody cannot be an actress. You have to learn where to draw the line you can only live another person’s life for a while. I have a way of dropping another’s person life as soon as the camera is off.

What has acting cost you?
It cost me something that used to be very special. Acting has cost everyone one thing or the other. But I don’t like to dwell in the past.

I guess that is your love life.
If you say so.
Some people would have gladly picked their relationship ahead of their career. Why didn’t you do that?
This is me; I cannot live another person’s live.

But acting cannot give you the kind of love a man can?
When you are still building your career you cannot afford to do some certain things. You can’t afford to take a break like I’m doing right now because people did not know you then. I couldn’t make that kind of sacrifice then.

May be you are not meant for that relationship?
Let’s take it that way. I believe the best is yet to come.

Would you say you are a good actress?
Let the people decide but I know I’m one hell of an actress.

What has acting done for you?
It has given me a name. It opens doors and gives you credibility where you are not known.

When men come around you asking for romantic relationship what are those attributes you look for?
I love a gentleman but not one that is too gentle. When he’s extremely gentle it puts me off. You must also know about fashion and have respects for women. You know there is a way you know a man who does not have respect for women.

What has been stopping you from getting that kind of a man?
There is nothing like delay everything has it own timing. I’m not just going to jump to the altar because a man with fat bank account comes around. I don’t want to get married because everybody is getting married. I want to get married and stay married.

Someone once said the reason why most of you find it difficult to settle down is because you are sitting on high horse with impossible demands.
Let me tell you, there is nobody sitting on high horse here, we are all African women and we all hope to get married sometimes. Everyone wants to settle down but I think the men are intimidated to come around, let them come around and be men.

So, are you single and searching now?
I am single but not searching. I am not wearing a ring yet, at the same time I am not advertising anything.

What are your favourite movies?
Alternatives, Land of Dwarfs, Peace of mind, and some I can’t remember.

You started with a soap opera, Beyond our dreams which gave you popularity. Which movie gave you the break?
It was Gold Digger by Infinity.

How was it like the first time you saw yourself on TV?
I felt I could do better. I was more like my own critic.

Why is it that the bad gal roles always come to Benita?
Thank God I’m not the one playing the bad role anymore. I guess it was due to my role in Beyond Our Dreams, people just assume that since I played the bad girl role well in the soap I could do it well in movies. So, that is the reason.

People say you smoke?
I don’t. it is only that people see me smoke in movies and they conclude that I must be a smoker. I don’t smoke.

What is true love?
True love is language of the heart. True love means you’ll respect me and not cheat on me. The best love of all is that of God anyway.

What could make a man gets into bed with you?
I must be in love with him and he must also be in love with me. It is not an easy thing. It is a lot of hard work, my brother it is not an easything.

For about three months now, rumours were rife that the actor, the African Movie Academy Award (AMAA) winner of Best Actor 2008, ingested hard drugs that erupted in his belly in Morocco as the Spain bound plane made a stop.

Another version of the cruel story spurn yarns of how he was reportedly 'beheaded' in faraway Russia or how he was buried alive in Saudi Arabia when he was convicted of pushing hard drugs.

Owoh who did not travel out of the country the period in question did not help matters, as he remained incommunicado, apparently developing a thick skin to the malicious rumours being peddled against his person.

He was on location in Abuja. So, O'jez decided to help dispel the rumours by inviting the actor to its newly formed O'jez Entertainment Forum. It took quite an effort to convince Owoh to leave his busy location schedule to come to Lagos for the Sunday event.

As at 8pm, Owoh had not shown up for the event billed to begin at 6pm.

There atmosphere was tense, president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, AGN, Ejike Asiegbu, notable Nollywood actor and former AGN president Zach Orji and Chairman of O'jez Chief Joseph Odobeatu were at intervals seen conferring and making frantic calls to Owoh to ascertain his expected time of arrival.

Meanwhile, the belly of O'jez restaurant was filled to the brim with fans of the actor who had one mission that evening—to confirm if actually he had been killed in faraway land.

When Owoh made his appearance at about 8.30pm, the whole place erupted. Television cameras trailed him from his car till he got a seat. Over 40 people with mobile phones were recording him for posterity and to show people at home that he is actually alive. The O'jez band was blasting away high life tunes to the admiration of all.

To prove he is alive, Owoh took the floor and declared that whoever started that wicked rumour about his death “miscalculated because God, because of that (rumour), has added another 20 years to my life.”

He said he was at loss as to how the rumour began but displaying his ever present sense of humour, he declared he was speaking from the dead. “I am talking from the dead because some moths ago, I was dead.

But if Obasanjo (former Nigerian President), said him dey Kampe, me, I dey Ka Kampe because Obasanjo is older than me.

He later performed his controversial song entitled 'I Go Chop Your Dollar'. This sent the crowd to the dance floor. Earlier, Zach Orji said the reason why O'jez decided to honour Owoh is not only to dispel the rumour of his death but to celebrate his worthy achievement in the field of the arts.

“Nkem Owoh is one of Nigeria's biggest actors and you know O'jez is home to Nigerian celebrities so we have to honour a star like Owoh.

And since the rumour about his death, this is the first time, he is appearing in public. So, let it be known that Nkem Owoh did not die and he did not peddle hard drugs as some wicked people would want the world to believe.”
