Concerns Mount as Election Day Approaches in the Senatorial District The Bayelsa East Women Solidarity Forum of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) have raised a red flag over what they claim to be a clandestine plan by some chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the senatorial district. The PDP Women Group alleges that there is an orchestrated scheme to divert election materials, particularly result sheets, ahead of the much-anticipated governorship election scheduled for Saturday in Bayelsa State. According to the spokesperson for the Bayelsa East PDP Women Group, Mrs. Patience Egene, the party has received credible information about a plot by some influential members of the APC to compromise the integrity of the electoral process. The alleged plan involves diverting election materials meant for specific polling units, thereby undermining the transparency and fairness of the upcoming election. Mrs. Egene emphasized that the PDP Women Group views these allegations with utmost seriousness, as any attempt to manipulate the electoral process will threaten the credibility of the Saturday election. She called on the relevant authorities, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies, to prevent the impending electoral fraud and take swift actions to prevent any interference in the electoral process. As the clock ticks down to the governorship election in Bayelsa State, the political atmosphere is becoming increasingly tense. The Bayelsa East PDP Women Group's allegations have added a new dimension to the electoral landscape, raising concerns about the potential for foul play. All eyes are now on INEC and security agencies to ensure a smooth, transparent, and credible electoral process on Saturday.

Facts are sacred: Faceless Peter Ologun’s infantile attempt at infamy and Obaseki’s irredeemable path to perdition (Part 2) I have read the very amusing, watery, childish, and senseless reply to my open press statement to Godwin Obaseki of Edo state to stop mentioning my name whenever he has nothing to showcase in his 7 years of been in power by one unknown Hon Ologun Peters. Ordinarily, I have no business with an unelected officer of government who cannot be held liable or responsible for the action or inaction, performance or non-performance of the governor or the government- I insist on debating with Mr Godwin Obaseki directly and not with an overzealous, self-appointed spokesperson whose only interest is his daily bread from Edo taxpayers’ money by continuously massaging the ego of his failing paymaster. It is apt to state that there is a difference between reporting cement production and distribution and reporting government performance around accountability and output, hence he can decide to descend into the gutters as he has nothing to lose, however, we the Edo people who have suffered the fall out of the ill-fated government of Godwin Obaseki has a lot to lose and we must fight even if we die in the process of fighting. It is this sort of weak professional training, poor handling and lack of maturity of someone like the so called Peter Ologun that appears to have made the Governor Obaseki-led government to have been adjudged by Edo people as the worse government Edo state has ever had since the state was created – This is a state that has been blessed with quality leaders and pro people governors such as Gen Sam Osaigbovo Ogbemudia, Prof Folorunsho Ali and of course Comrade Aliyu Oshiomhole. I am yet to come to terms with the reality that I once served under this controversial, completely divisive, obviously cursed, self - serving and failed contraption. While I am excited that I realized on time and resigned voluntarily almost four years ago, let it be on record that the people of Edo state cannot wait for this contraption called ‘government’ to be over soon and another affliction wont arise again. In my earlier statement, I asked the Governor salient questions which include that aside from travelling to Akoko Edo on a quarterly basis to inaugurate a rag-tag set of appointees as SSAs or SAs whose salaries could at best be estimated at $95.00 per month or to hold factional meetings of the once peaceful, once virile and united PDP what has the government achieved in the following areas after wasting 7 years as the governor of Edo state? (see below) Mr Governor, my point in conclusion is that next time when you visit Akoko Edo LGA, the people expect you to be reeling out data around the following thematic areas of development and stop REPEATING or regurgitating that your love for Akoko Edo people made you appointed your CoS from that area. That is crappy, manipulative and childish. 1. List of initiated and completed projects under your government. 2. The number of poor Edo citizens lifted out of poverty in the last 7 years. 3. Number of loans given to local businesses and number of schools renovated with chairs, modern toilets and perimeter fencing and not inaugurating SSAs without specific terms of reference. 4. How many doctors do we have in Igarra, Ibillo and Ososo general hospitals at the moment compared to what he inherited? When last were nurses hired to take care of poor patients? 5. Where are the so-called one Primary Health Care (PHC) per ward promised the people since the 2020 elections? 6. What is the situation with all the primary schools in Akoko Edo? Are you aware that 70% of these schools have one teacher on the average? Are you aware that most pupils learn under the trees and under the rain? We need to know why you failed to address this embarrassing state of schools in the LGA and it has become an issue of concern even within the development community. You can deceive people with fake data and PowerPoint presentation, but Edo people know better. 7. What have you done with Igarra Cattle ranch as promised the people? How many jobs have your government created through the cattle ranch? 8. What has your government done with the 46-year-old Igarra Technical College? This is 2023 and you have less than a year to go? You promised to turn it around and remodeled it to a world class institution- another failed promise to Akoko Edo people. 9. You promised to construct the Okpella – Ososo road since 2018? How many kilometers have you achieved as we speak? The people of ososo are still expectant that indeed miracle can still happen between now and November 2024 when it is your time to go. Same is applicable to Ososo tourist center. 10. Where are we on the Ibillo market that you promised to transform to an international Garri export zone? Today the condition of the market is worse than your government met it in 2016. 11. How come we no longer hear of Edo jobs and the fictitious 200,000 jobs your MD of Edo jobs Ukinebo Dare told the world she created within 2 years? It is on record that I disputed this figure in and out of cabinet and I still challenge Edo jobs till date? 12. If any, assuming that you created 200,000 jobs, where are the physical beneficiaries from Akoko Edo? How much are their salaries? Do they have pay slips? How much tax do they pay to the government? You can fool some people some time, but you cannot fool everybody all the time. 13. You promised to construct alternative roads leading to the local government since you don’t want to help rehabilitate the Federally owned Ibillo- Auchi road. Why have you abandoned the state owned Igarra- Makeke – Ososo roads. What is the situation with this promise? Mr Governor the time is running out. 14. In the area of security your government is ranked very low in Nigeria due to poor handling of your so-called security architecture. The people of Edo state and indeed Akoko Edo people cannot sleep with their two eyes closed as kidnapping is now an active industry under your watch. This is completely unacceptable and yet you are the Chief security officer of the state. 1. We have lost countless souls in the last five years including poor villagers, visiting tourists and businessmen and women due to insecurity, while you blame the FGN for this on one hand, you arrogate to yourself the nomenclature of the chief security officer of the state on another hand. 2. Mr governor Edo state is not rated favorably when it comes to transparency and open government, we are one of the most highly indebted states in Nigeria, over 61% of your LGAs cant access Benin city by road and yet you sleep well? Haba, there Is an end to wickedness. You can gather court jesters in Akoko -Edo or a few others across the state to sing your praises and make you feel good, but the truth is that Edo people are not smiling and its better you rise above the court-jesting pen of your spokesman and wake up to the reality of failure. In conclusion, genuine technocrats who are willing to join politics are now afraid and ashamed to be identified as technocrats because of the way you have discredited the word. This is like using a ladder to climb to the roof top and after which you take it off so others don’t climb. History will judge you very harshly. Taiwo Akerele Writes from Washington DC. |
A Farewell To Professor Ben Obi Nwabueze, SAN, 1932-2023, a true titan of the law and a beacon of wisdom. Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, OON Today, I feel a profound sadness as I receive the news of the passing of a mentor and an extraordinary man, Professor Ben Nwabueze, SAN. His departure leaves another void in my world, and I cannot help but gather my thoughts to pay tribute to his remarkable life, his immense contributions, and the profound impact he had on the legal profession, Nigerian society, and the entire world as a whole. Professor Ben Nwabueze was not merely an attorney or an academic; he was a force of nature—a versatile attorney, a cerebral academic, an authority, and a Professor of Professors in constitutional law. His brilliance and expertise in his field were unparalleled, making him a colossus among his peers. His deep understanding of the intricacies of the law and his unwavering commitment to justice were the hallmarks of his illustrious career. I had the privilege of crossing paths with Professor Nwabueze as an undergraduate at the University of Jos, where I came across some of his works. I instantly became his shadow mentee without any introduction or prompting. His works greatly influenced me, to the point where I breathed and spoke of his indelible thoughts and teachings. However, I had a near falling out with him during the reign of President Goodluck Jonathan. I vividly recall the moment when he made a suggestion, calling for a Kamal Ataturk-like revolution in Nigeria. In my youthful enthusiasm, I demanded that he be sanctioned for his audacity as I can't juxtapox his various thesis in constitutionalism to his new found application of Ataturk Revolution to resolve Nigeria issues. However, it was Chief E.K. Clark who reprimanded and brought me back from my wilderness, revealing that Professor Nwabueze had been his lecturer in London. It was a powerful reminder of the profound respect and admiration that his peers and student held for him—a testament to his intellectual prowess and his enduring impact on the legal community. One of the indelible moments etched in my memory is Professor Nwabueze's appearance at the 2019 Presidential election tribunal in a petition between Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Gen Muhammadu Buhari. Despite his frailty, he made a surprise entrance, seated in a wheelchair. It was a poignant and powerful sight—a symbol of his unwavering dedication to upholding justice, even in the face of personal challenges. His presence in that courtroom spoke volumes about his commitment to the principles he held dear and his resolute belief in the power of the law to create a just society. Professor Ben Nwabueze's influence extended far beyond his legal career. Born on December 22nd, 1932, in Atani, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State, his academic journey began at a young age. He pursued his education with diligence and determination, attending renowned institutions such as the London School of Economics and Political Science and the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He excelled in his academic pursuits, earning his Doctor of Laws (LL.D) at the University of London in 1978, becoming the second Nigerian and African to hold a higher doctorate degree in Law based on published works. Throughout his illustrious career, Professor Nwabueze authored over thirty books and treatises, covering a wide range of legal subjects. His publications, including "Constitutionalism, Presidentialism, and Judicialism," became essential references in the legal community, and his scholarly contributions shaped the discourse on constitutional law in Nigeria. His dedication to publishing and his commitment to sharing his knowledge and insights were unparalleled. Beyond his academic achievements, Professor Nwabueze was actively involved in university administration, serving in various leadership roles in universities across Nigeria and beyond. He held professorial chairs in esteemed institutions and played a pivotal role in shaping the educational landscape of the country. His impact as a teacher and mentor cannot be overstated, as he inspired countless individuals to pursue careers in law and to embrace the pursuit of knowledge as a lifelong endeavor. Professor Ben Nwabueze's commitment to the Igbo cause was unwavering. He co-founded Ohaneze Ndigbo, a non-partisan Pan Igbo pressure group, and served as its Secretary-General for over two decades. His advocacy for the rights and welfare of the Igbo people earned him the respect and admiration of many. He was a true patriot, dedicated to the advancement of his people and the unity of Nigeria as a whole. Today, as I reflect on the remarkable life of Professor Ben Nwabueze, I salute him as an academic giant, a legal luminary, and a true role model. His contributions to the Nigerian legal system and his tireless efforts to promote justice and constitutionalism will forever be remembered. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of lawyers, academics, and advocates for years to come. I humbly extend my deepestcondolences to Professor Nwabueze's family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. May his soul rest in eternal peace, knowing that he has left an indelible mark on our hearts, our legal system, and our nation. Farewell, Professor Ben Nwabueze, SAN, a true titan of the law and a beacon of wisdom.

Imperative for the Implementation of Prison Electronic Tags for Inmates Awaiting Trial in Correctional Centers in Nigeria -Dr Olukayode Ajulo, OON It is imperative for me to propose the urgent implementation of prison electronic tags for inmates awaiting trial in Nigeria. This initiative aims to address the pressing issue of overcrowding in prisons, expedite the judicial process, and optimize the utilization of government resources. The current state of Nigeria's prison system is burdened by the high number of inmates awaiting trial. According to recent statistics, a significant proportion of the prison population comprises individuals who have not yet been convicted. This situation not only exacerbates issues of overcrowding but also places an enormous financial strain on the government's resources allocated for the maintenance of these individuals. The primary objective of this proposal is to introduce a comprehensive system of prison electronic tags for inmates awaiting trial. By implementing this technology, I aim to achieve the following for Nigeria: 1. Reduction in Prison Overcrowding: The utilization of electronic tags will allow non-violent and low-risk individuals awaiting trial to be released from prison while ensuring they remain under continuous surveillance. This will substantially reduce the burden on the prison system, creating more space for convicted criminals and facilitating better living conditions for all inmates. 2. Expedited Judicial Process: Electronic tags will enable judiciary authorities to monitor the movement and activities of individuals awaiting trial effectively. This will help in ensuring their compliance with court-imposed restrictions such as curfews, travel limitations, and exclusion zones. Additionally, it will aid in preventing absconding and facilitate the timely execution of legal proceedings. 3. Cost Savings: The implementation of prison electronic tags will lead to significant cost savings for the government. By reducing the number of inmates awaiting trial, fewer resources will be required for their maintenance, including food, healthcare, and security personnel. These savings can be redirected towards other crucial sectors, such as improving prison infrastructure, enhancing rehabilitation programs, and strengthening the overall criminal justice system. To effectively implement the prison electronic tags system, the following steps should be taken: 1. Needs Assessment: Conduct a comprehensive needs assessment to evaluate the current capacity and infrastructure required for the implementation of electronic tagging. This assessment should include considerations for hardware, software, personnel training, and necessary legal frameworks. 2. Collaborative Partnerships: Foster partnerships with reputable technology providers specializing in electronic monitoring systems. Engage with international organizations, NGOs, and other relevant stakeholders to tap into their expertise and experience in implementing similar programs worldwide. 3. Legislative Framework: Collaborate with legal experts and stakeholders to develop or revise existing legislation to accommodate the use of electronic monitoring for individuals awaiting trial. This framework should define the conditions and criteria for electronic tagging, as well as the roles and responsibilities of relevant government agencies, the judiciary, and law enforcement. 4. Pilot Program: Initiate a pilot program in selected prisons or regions to assess the effectiveness and feasibility of the electronic tagging system. This will allow for fine-tuning of the technology, identification of potential challenges, and the development of best practices before a nationwide rollout. 5. Capacity Building: Conduct comprehensive training programs for relevant personnel, including prison staff, law enforcement officers, and judicial authorities. These programs should focus on proper usage and maintenance of electronic tagging equipment, data management, privacy protection, and the integration of electronic monitoring into existing criminal justice processes. 6. Public Awareness and Acceptance: Launch an extensive public awareness campaign to educate the public about the benefits and importance of electronic tagging for inmates awaiting trial. Address any concerns regarding privacy and security, emphasizing the potential positive impact on reducing prison overcrowding and expediting the judicial process. Budget and Funding: The successful implementation of the prison electronic tags system will require a well-defined budget. We recommend conducting a detailed financial analysis to determine the costs associated with hardware acquisition, software development, system maintenance, personnel training, and public awareness campaigns. Additionally, exploring potential funding sources such as international grants, public-private partnerships, and reallocation of existing resources should be considered. In conclusion, the implementation of prison electronic tags for inmates awaiting trial represents a significant step forward in addressing the challenges faced by Nigeria's prison system. By adopting this technology, we can reduce overcrowding, expedite the judicial process, and save substantial costs associated with the maintenance of individuals awaiting trial. I urge you to consider this proposal seriously and initiate the necessary steps to pilot and implement the prison electronic tagging system in Nigeria.

APC Group Disowns Fake Excos Over Attempt To Drag Deputy Speaker Kalu's Name In The Mud A support group in the ruling All Progressives Congress, the Progressive League of Youth Voters, has distanced itself from allegations of anti-party activities against the Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Rt Hon. Benjamin Kalu. The group, at a press conference on Wednesday, in Abuja, said it neither dragged Kalu to Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje, the APC national chairman, or President Bola Tinubu. The APC youths further disowned one Amb. Usman Shuaibu, describing him as an imposter and its former member who was expelled over fraudulent activities. In a statement jointly signed by Mallam Ibrahim Kabiru Tijani and Comrade Adamu Adamu, its president, and secretary respectively, the group, therefore, warned the unsuspecting public to be wary of Shuaibu whose stock in trade is blackmail. Describing Rt Hon. Kalu as a pillar of youth and a firm disciple of President Tinubu, the group noted that the Deputy Speaker is committed to the ruling party and did not at any point engage in anti-party for any reason. The statement, however, assured Nigerians that Kalu remains focused on his legislative pursuit and quest to bring development, peace, and prosperity to citizens. In clear terms, it said that the Deputy Speaker would not meddle in the petty politics of sponsoring a campaign of calumny against his fellow party faithful. "It has come to our attention that one Usman Shuaibu issued a vain press statement accusing the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon. Benjamin Kalu of anti-party activities," the statement partly reads. "We also learned that the attention of the APC leadership and President Tinubu was drawn to call the Deputy Speaker to order. While ordinarily, we would have ignored these attention seekers, we are duty-bound to put the records straight as the hard-earned reputation of our organization and that of a respected leader has been brought into disrepute. "First, the said Usman Shuaibu is not a member of our group. He was expelled over fraudulent behaviour when he tried to swindle unsuspecting fans of Asiwaju whilst claiming to be campaigning for the President but took to the acquisition of landed properties. "We are worried that he is still in the same business of blackmail, campaign of calumny, and extortion. He has not learned. "It is, however, unfortunate that the highly-revered Deputy Speaker is his next target. But thankfully, we have sufficient facts to counter all his dark arts and dirty tricks. "It is glaring that Rt Hon. Kalu is one of the shining lights of the 10th National Assembly. He has sponsored the most bills in the House of Reps and has excellently stepped in for the Speaker on numerous occasions. "As a youth group, we are proud of him and his achievements so far. He is a man on a mission and has remained focused on the people-oriented agenda of the 10th House. Is it the kind of man who will go low to engage in dirty politics? "We are by this press statement urging the unsuspecting public to be wary of Shuaibu and his likes who are out to tarnish the image of innocent and well-placed Nigerians. We challenge them to provide proof to back their claims. "Meanwhile, we want to urge the Deputy Speaker to remain focused and ignore distractions. The Nigerian youths are behind him". |
The Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Hon. Philip Agbese, has reiterated the determination of members of the 10th House to champion legislation that will uplift the lives of Nigerians as well as promote social justice. Speaking on Friday in an interview with select journalists in Makurdi, the Benue state capital, Agbese said Reps members are determined to strive for greater heights hence the unyielding support for the Speaker, and the entire leadership. He contended that the unique qualities and leadership style of Speaker Tajudeen Abbas have been a source of encouragement to members who according to him are poised to put in their best while working in harmony with the executive arm, as well as upholding the principle of check and balance. Acknowledging the high expectations of Nigerians from the 10th National Assembly, the Deputy Spokesman, however, expressed optimism that better days are in sight despite the current harsh economic reality being experienced by citizens. His words: "For us in the House of Representatives, the time for politics is over. We are focusing on our business of lawmaking. We have very strong characters in the House of Representatives just like the Senate, yet everyone is at peace with one another". Agbese who represents Ado/Okpokwu/ Ogbadibo Federal Constituency further said that the 10th House is a reservoir of quality and extraordinary personalities serving as committee chairmen. He added that they understand the business of lawmaking as well as parliamentary rudiments, stressing that before the official inauguration of the House in June this year, members were firmly united and focused. According to him, "Speaker Abbas Tajudeen has continued to solidify that synergy, and unity of purpose we nurtured even before the proclamation of the 10th national assembly". He further stated that the masses-oriented leadership disposition of Speaker Abbas, his genuine respect for colleagues coupled with a rare poise of humility are added elixir. On issues concerning the purchase of official SUV vehicles for members, the ebullient parliamentarian expressed hopes that Nigerians will celebrate the 10th House of Representatives members at the end of the day as their efforts will surpass the monetary quantification of the vehicles. "We are working very hard and our efforts are more visible than in the past. Everyone can see the imprints of the parliament in virtually every sector of our national life," he concluded. |

By Philip Agbese What is grace? This is a question that I have been battling with for a while. I have looked at some of the recent happenings in the country concerning some individuals, and one of them is the Rt Hon Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to the President. Gbaja as he is fondly called could pass for a man with nine lives. He has been around for a while. He has had his share of good, bad, and ugly times. He has been accused, and he has been commended. Interestingly, he kept his cool in all these, and grace continued to work for him. I recall that in the 8th Assembly, he aspired to be the Speaker of the House of Representatives. He worked hard but didn't get it. He didn't despair. He was loyal and waited for his turn. And guess what? Grace turned up for him. He was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives in the 9th Assembly, and those who worked against him went on their knees seeking forgiveness and patronage. He was calm as usual and did what he knew how to do best. He was on top of his game. I recall an incident in the twilight of his tenure as the Speaker of the House of Representatives. The Deputy Speaker challenged his grace, and the rest is history. He served out his term successfully, and another assignment came calling. This time around, the opposition was fierce. Many thought his grace was over, and they rejoiced. They sang to the high heavens, dancing to the imminent fall from grace of Femi Gbajabiamila. But grace turned up again. He smiled and moved on. He was appointed the Chief of Staff to the President. Those who felt he would be a hard nut to crack in their desire to call the shots within the presidency went to work. But they failed. And they didn't stop. It is an era of slander and blackmail. They churned out invective against him. He was to blame for everything that emanated from the presidency. They went as far as insinuating issues that only existed in their imaginations. All was geared towards making the President uncomfortable with him and ultimately showing him the way out. But they forgot that when grace speaks, protocols are suspended. And indeed, the grace has been sufficient for Femi Gbajabiamila. I do not envy him, but I salute his mien and ability to stay calm. That is one of the qualities that endeared him to the President. You can't predict his next move. He keeps you guessing until you run out of steam. He allows you to exhaust your arsenal, no matter how dangerous. It is a very risky enterprise, but it has worked for him and is still working. Femi Gbajabiamila reminds me of the phrase, "Touch not my anointed. Maybe he is the anointed one. Perhaps the chosen one or the special one. Whichever you choose, you are right. Love him or hate him; he stands tall at all times. Very brilliant and analytical. He smiles at you even when he is supposed to wear a frown. He encourages you to do more. What a daring person. But he watches you closely with the eyes on the eagle. I wonder what runs through his mind when he comes under mindless attacks from some vested interest. Does he blink in his closet? I doubt it because his composure does not give him away. Someone said Femi Gbajabiamila is an enigma that is worth studying. Someone also said he waits for you at the end of the road to welcome you from your vicious journey. If you are lucky, he will offer you a bottle of water. Would your conscience allow you to drink the water? Only those in that boat can answer the question. What sort of grace does Femi Gbajabiamila exude? The grace that beats human understanding. The grace that runs faster than the speed of lightning. The grace that strikes like a thief in the night. The grace that is confusing to the human eyes, and the grace that warns you to retrace your steps in the slander and blackmail enterprise. A word is enough for the wise. What is his offense that some want his head? For being a gentleman and a leadership guru or a political strategist? The former number four man in the leadership hierarchy of the country is not mediocre, and one that does not play to the gallery. He has seen it all in leadership, and when some allegations are made against him, it only smacks of mockery of commonsense. Most times, these allegations need to be better thought out. The promoters are always in haste and, in the process, make a mess of themselves. Before we crucify Femi Gbajabiamila, let us pause and think it through. He is a patriot who is devoted to his principal and the country. He has demonstrated capacity and love for the country. You don't have to like him. But commonsense would suffice that the grace of God surrounds some individuals. Femi Gbajabiamila is one, and let those with ears hear this—my two cents. No fewer than 10,000 Christians drawn across the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory on Monday held a solidarity walk to congratulate President Bola Tinubu for his victory at the tribunal and inclusive government. Under the aegis of the All Christian Youths in Northern Nigeria (ACYNN), the group applauded the President for including Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, Chief of Defense Staff General Christopher Musa, and other Christians in his government. In a letter co-signed by its national president, Dominic Alancha and four others, the group said President Tinubu has surprised Christians with his appointments, especially after many expressed reservations over the Muslim-Muslim ticket. The group said it is particularly pleased with the choice of Gen Musa to lead the Armed Forces, being a Christian from Kaduna who understands the impact of the insecurity in the state and other parts. The Christian youths said this is a testament to Tinubu's incredible leadership style, centered on ingenuity and inclusiveness. "We have been profoundly impressed by your administration's extraordinary efforts in appointing Northern Christians to pivotal political roles. This signifies a significant step towards inclusivity, granting a voice to marginalised, neglected, and often forgotten Christian minorities in Northern Nigeria especially those from the Middle-belt," the group said. "At a point, we questioned whether we were recognised as Nigerian citizens with a stake in our beloved country at all. However, your swift and unprecedented appointments, such as naming His Excellency Senator George Akume from Benue State as Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), have not only surprised us but also resonated with many well-intentioned Nigerians. This marks a historic moment in Nigeria's history, and for this, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to you, Mr. President. "Your Excellency, you have also appointed General Christopher Gwabin Musa as the 18th Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) on the 19th of June, an exemplary choice who happens to be a Northern Christian from Zangon Kataf in Kaduna State. "This appointment is a testament to your leadership style, free from the divisive politics often seen in the Nigerian political arena. You govern with remarkable ingenuity and inclusiveness, uniting all Nigerians as one united nation. We wholeheartedly appreciate your approach, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. "As Northern Christians, we initially had reservations about the Muslim-Muslim ticket of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Ibrahim Shettima. Yet, your inclusive governance has impressed us greatly." The group, therefore, appealed to all well-meaning Nigerians from every geopolitical zone to join hands with the Tinubu administration in propelling Nigeria towards progress. It also called on "Christians and Nigerians, in general, to unite in prayer for the well-being of President Tinubu and Vice President Ibrahim Shettima. "

A development economist and former chief of staff in edo state, Mr Taiwo Akerele has issued a stern warning to the Governor and Deputy Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki and Mr. Philip Shaibu, respectively, Mr Akerele in a statement made available to newsmen at the sidelines of the UNGA78 in New York, he called on them to halt their interpersonal squabble and focus on governing the state in the best interest of its citizens. With recent political tensions escalating within the state, Mr. Akerele, a chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Edo state, and a conscientious observer, fears that this distraction has the potential to negatively affect the security, governance, and prosperity of Edo State. "It is disheartening to witness the recurrent personal battles between Governor Obaseki and Deputy Governor Shaibu," said Mr. Akerele. "Their ongoing feud is causing severe disruptions, hindering the state from progressing and addressing the significant challenges it faces." Mr. Akerele further asserts that while the Governor and Deputy Governor continue their public sparring, the security of lives and property within Edo State remains at risk. He calls on the security agencies, under the control of President Tinubu, to ensure the safety and well-being of the people, thereby compensating for the government's inability to properly address the pressing security concerns. "I implore President Tinubu and the security agencies to take immediate action and safeguard the lives and property of the people of Edo State," "They must ensure the security of the state, especially in times of political instability caused by personal disagreements." Edo State deserves a stable and secure environment for its citizens to thrive. Mr. Akerele strongly urges Governor Obaseki and Deputy Governor Shaibu to set aside their differences, prioritize the welfare of the people, and focus on governance.

By William Ochonu What God cannot do does not exist. Do you agree with this statement? The magnificent God and the creator of heaven and earth. The all-knowing God and the Prince of Peace. Do you agree now? Pastor Jerry Eze, the founder of Streams of Joy International Church, came into the scene with a brand new message that resonated in the polity. The old and the young identified with the demonstration of the power and the efficacy of the word of God. At the onset, it seemed like a joke. Some joked about it, and some took it seriously that at some point, it became an anthem for confessing the hands of God in all human endeavors. I have been a long admirer of Pastor Jerry Eze. His energy and uniqueness on the pulpit indeed gave many hope. He connected with his congregation and beyond his congregation. It was undoubtedly a story of what God cannot do does not exist. I recall when he shared his journey through life and how God used a couple in the church to see him through his educational pursuit. It was God at work, and this much he has emphasized in his preaching. Pastor Jerry Eze is a man after God's heart, and when he started the New Season Prophetic. Prayers and Declaration (NSPPD) at the onset of the COVID-19 era, he challenged the restrictions in the body of Christ through the online daily prayers, which at some point recorded over 1 million views daily. Its impact was felt within and outside the country. The New Season of Prophetic. Prayers and Declaration reached millions of souls worldwide. It emerged as the number one online prayer platform and the number one 'Daily Most Super Chatted Gospel Channel' worldwide, with a record 313,768,909 or 889,627 chats per day. With over 800,000 subscribers, the NSPPD platform ranked a few points below Bishop Leonardo's channel with 11.4m subscribers. The prayer program streams daily on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and Mixlr topped the global chart with a record 113,689,464 views. According to the latest data from Playboard. co, the NSPPD platform grossed 7,308,995 views in the last 30 days at an average of 87,544 views per day. It was also ranked as the world's second 'most live viewers' gospel channel and the 'most watched live channel' in Nigeria, leading in daily, weekly, and monthly parameters. What God cannot do, indeed, does not exist. According to Pastor Jerry Eze, he was raised by a Christian mother who instilled godly virtues in him. "My first introduction to God was my mom saying I was going to be a voice in my generation and serve God. That was how I grew up and continued in my journey with God. I grew up in a poor home; I must not forget to say that my mom was quite indigent." He says he is angry at the devil, which explains his aggressive prayer style. "Every day of my life, I open messages and emails and see that someone is down with cancer, someone just died; there is so much pain in the world. Half of the time, people are masking their pain; people are hurt and going through challenging issues." "My aggression comes from the mere fact that I'm angry with the devil because God is not the doer of all these things. The Bible says God cannot be tempted with evil, so he is not causing the people this pain; He is not causing this level of shame. First of all, it comes to me as pain that generally translates to anger." These were instructive words; little wonder his passion and exploits in reaching millions worldwide. Pastor Jerry Eze has indeed brought a new dimension to the propagation of the word of God. Many have received healing and had their situations turned around for good. Many have discovered their destinies and come to their place to rest. What started as a small online prayer has indeed changed the world. Testimonies have poured in from near and far. Pastor Jerry Eze is burning alive with passion for serving God and humanity. This is a new dimension in the body of Christ. It is a discovery emphasizing that what God cannot do does not exist. I recall some time in 2022, the Cable News Network (CNN) carried a story titled "The YouTube prayer channel started during Covid that's become a global movement." The report stated thus: "Every morning at 7 am Nigerian time, Pastor Jerry Eze can be seen on a YouTube livestream fervently praying over thousands of stacks of requests he has received from his followers around the world. Flanked usually by his wife Eno and an associate, Eze's passionate prayers are delivered in an urgent staccato, as he prays for cures to ailments and challenges such as illnesses, court cases, and financial issues." "People worldwide are accustomed to waking up and finding Pastor Jerry online," Eze says. "It's like a virus that has come to stay.". The NPSSD was indeed the virus that confronted the coronavirus. People prayed and received healing through this idea that has come to redefine the propagation of the gospel of Jesus Christ. In 2022, viewers from the UK and the US made up 25% of his live streams on YouTube, with over one million views from the UK and over 700,000 views from the US. Another example of what God cannot do does not exist. Pastor Jerry Eze is a phenomenon who has attracted global attention. His passion for God is infectious. He has brought millions together through the New Season Prophetic Prayers and Declarations channel. No doubt, a new season of prophetic prayers and declarations has brought healing and succor to millions across the world. What started as a daily devotional with the idea of helping Christians by offering Prophetic Prayer and Daily Declarations as inspired by the Holy Spirit has turned into a global movement. He received prestigious recognition from the State of Georgia in the United States at the recently concluded NSPPD USA Prayer Conference. The conference proved to be nothing short of miraculous, with numerous astonishing testimonies of healing and instant miracles that unfolded live before the eyes of the attendees. The NSPPD USA Prayer Conference emerged as an unqualified success, a testament to the unwavering commitment of Pastor Jerry Eze to the global Christian community. I will conclude this piece with the word of God in Jeremiah 33:3: "Call to me, and I will answer you and tell you great and hidden things that you have not known." This is a new dimension, and what God cannot do does not exist. Ochonu wrote this piece from Abuja.. |
APC, INEC Ask Ogun Election Tribunal To Dismiss PDP’s Petition As Parties Submit Final Written Addresses Governor Dapo Abiodun and the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday urged the Ogun State Election Petition Tribunal to dismiss the petition filed by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ladi Adebutu and his party against the election of Abiodun during the March 18, 2023 governorship election in the state. This is even as the tribunal reserved judgment in the petition as counsels to all the parties submitted their final written addresses. The Chairman of the three-man tribunal, Justice Hamidu Kunaza, told the counsels that the final day of the judgment would be communicated to all the parties. Adebutu had approached the tribunal to challenge the declaration of Prince Abiodun as the winner of the governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), saying that the election was marred with corrupt practices and non-compliance with the Electoral Act. In their separate submissions however, counsels to the 1st respondent (INEC), Mr Remi Olatubora (SAN), 2nd (Dapo Abiodun), Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), and the 3rd (APC), Mr Tayo Oyetibo (SAN), told the tribunal that the petitioners failed to prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt. Counsel to INEC, Olatubora, prayed the tribunal to dismiss the petition for being absolutely unmerited and a waste of the tribunal’s precious time. He said that allegations of corrupt practices, non-compliance, multiple thumb printing of ballot papers, ballot stuffing, and forgery as alleged by the petitioners were not proved beyond any reasonable doubt He described the testimony of the witnesses brought by the petitioners as heresy, which is not admissible in law. Counsel to Prince Dapo Abiodun, Chief Wole Olanipekun, (SAN) in his final address, described Adebutu’s petition as a mere academic exercise. He noted that the soul of the petition was not duly signed and stamped and, therefore, lacked merit to be adopted and should be struck out. “The document is not signed, not dated, no heading, no title, no identity, no signature, no stamp. The CTC has no signature,” he said. However, in his counter-argument, Counsel to Adebutu, Chris Uche, SAN, told the tribunal that all documents presented by the petitioners were obtained from INEC. He urged the tribunal to declare Adebutu the winner of the governorship election or, in the alternative, order a rerun of the election in 99 polling units where he alleged that there were disruptions. Counsel to APC, Tayo Oyetubo, who spoke to journalists shortly after the adjournment, said the respondents have presented a good case, even as he expressed confidence that the judgement would be in their favour. He said: “All parties have addressed the court on the case before the court, and the matter has been adjourned for judgment. The case that was brought to the tribunal was attacked on different grounds in terms of competence, in terms of substance, and in terms of the quality of the witnesses that were brought, all of those issues have been adequately canvassed before the court and in a nutshell, the respondents are confident that they’ve done a good job and winning the case.” It would be recalled that APC and Prince Abiodun had described Adebutu and PDP’s petition as a wild goose chase. Abiodun and APC, in their final written submission earlier reported, argued that the petitioners did an awful job and failed to prove their case. This, they said, was because Adebutu and PDP presented tutored and unreliable witnesses, relied on documents that contradicted their witnesses' case, and presented experts whose testimonies and documents lacked probative value. They argued that Adebutu and PDP, who are accused of vote buying with credible evidence, have unclean hands and could not receive equity with those unclean hands. |
By Charles Ibekwe Change is inevitable although we hardly see it coming. It is common knowledge that a signature is an acceptable mark of identification. Therefore, in the public and private sectors, a conscientious leader will strive to leave indelible and enduring marks. To do less could attract historical opprobrium. Although much disapproving political outing has been witnessed in the Southeast region since the return to democracy in 1999, there is still room to right the wrongs and steer the region in the direction of economic and political prosperity. However, before this can be achieved, Nd'Igbo must re-evaluate their priorities, character, and what they stand for in the polity. As the great Malcolm X once said, "A Man who stands for nothing will fall for anything". So, will Nd'Igbo accept the current leadership distribution in the polity and embrace their own? Luckily, we may not have to look too far outside the current leadership formation to find a rallying point whose wealth of experience and track record of achievements in private and public sectors have potentially positioned him to help set a progressive tune for us in national politics. Despite the unending dialectics across party divide in the region coupled with unresolved bickering among elders and frontline politicians, the emergence of Distinguished Hon Benjamin Okezie Kalu representing Bende Federal Constituency as the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives offers a glimmer of hope on two fronts. One is the fact that the zone was not marginalized in the distribution of national leadership positions. Secondly, it offers the region an opportunity to depart from that vicious circle of personalized politics of retrogression which had over time encouraged the recycling of leaders without any form of integration. First elected in 2019, Rt Hon. Kalu was the chairman House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, a position he held to the admiration of many. He played a vital role in ensuring that the activities of the House were properly disseminated in the media so that Nigerians would appreciate the efforts of their representatives towards their law-making and oversight functions. An astute lawyer, Benjamin Kalu has distinguished himself as a member who is well respected for his sterling qualities and exemplary knowledge of the legislative process. Young, intelligent, and dynamic, he is a man of integrity who has proved his mettle. As a true Patriot, he is committed to service to humanity in every sense of the word. Among the 40 bills he sponsored in his first tenure was the highly inspiring and impactful bill that sought to alter the amended 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by replacing the item "prison service" in the exclusive legislative list with " correctional services" in the concurrent legislative list. This very historic legislative effort was assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari. Indeed, Hon Kalu has carved a niche for himself as a selfless leader who believes strongly that government exists for the greatest good of the people. Today, he is one of the leading lights in the National Assembly. He believes that this is a demonstration of the confidence his colleagues across party lines have in him and also a challenge for him to play a greater role in integrating Nd'Igbo into mainstream politics. Succinctly put, the southeast region is better positioned politically with the emergence of Rt Hon. Kalu as the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives. His contacts and influence present a new dawn in leadership recruitment in the southeast region. Nd'Igbo must not make mistakes about this rare opportunity. There is an urgent need to be alert and face the business of leadership and followership if progress can be made. We must be clear about our position in the Nigerian political space at this time. Rt Hon. Kalu has the advantage of education, exposure, an influential platform, and the courage to put Nd'Igbo and the southeast region on a sound political track. Rt Hon. Kalu represents a new era for our people. He is like the Biblical Moses who will lead us to the Promised Land. The Deputy Speaker is well-armed with courage, integrity, capacity, and compassion to embark on this foray. All we have to do as a people is get ready for the ride. Hatred, strife, disunity, and disregard for other tribes are major obstacles we must avoid. We also have to prepare our minds for major hurdles on the road and trust Rt Hon. Kalu to drive us to our destination, safely. Ibekwe is a forensic psychologist writing from UNN. |
Ondo-born business mogul and philanthropist, Engr Funmi Ayinke, has applauded President Bola Tinubu for appointing Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo as Minister of Interior. In a letter to the President, Ayinke described Tunji-Ojo as one of the leading lights from Ondo, recognized for his exceptional qualities. She further hailed the former federal lawmaker as one the best brains from the Sunshine State, well-armed to fulfill his mandate and fully domesticate the President's Renewed Hope Agenda. By selecting Tunji-Ojo, Ayinke said the President has demonstrated a "penchant for men and women of goodwill, those with high moral standards who are prepared for the tasks". She added: "The President is indeed a man who values and rewards hard work and recognizes excellence capacity, and intellect. Above all, he is ready to go against the status quo just to make Nigeria better. " Ayinke, therefore, assured President Tinubu that he wouldn't regret the choice of Tunji-Ojo, reiterating her unwavering support at all times. She noted that the interior minister has left a lasting impression on previous assignments and would do so at the national level. According to her, "Tunji-Ojo would effectively handle domestic or internal affairs of the country, especially those that affect the welfare of the common man". Ayinke, however, urged the minister not to lose focus and to continue on the wonderful path that has brought him fame and fortune. She warned that Tunji-Ojo must always stand for justice, equity, and fairness - the hallmark of his time in the National Assembly.

...says transparency and safety are paramount in the sector The Centre for Social Justice, Equity, and Transparency (CESJET) has hailed the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, for hitting the ground running. The Centre, in a statement signed by Executive Director, Isaac Ikpa, said the Senior Advocate of Nigeria is already punching above his weight after being written off by critics. After barely two weeks on the job, Ikpa said Keyamo has taken giant steps to revamp the aviation sector that was bedeviled by controversies and uncertainties. He noted that the reforms and policies introduced so far are evident that the minister came prepared with a clear blueprint to make the country's aviation sector one of the best in the world. Highlighting some of the giant steps taken, Ikpa welcomed the suspension of the national carrier and airport concession. He said it was apparent even to the blind that the entire process was clouded in controversy and fraud; done without following due process. Ikpa added that it was best for it to be reviewed to potentially eliminate all the bottlenecks along the way. By doing these and reviewing complaints, he further said that Keyamo has restored transparency, accountability, and integrity to the aviation business while winning the trust of stakeholders and international partners. "We have followed the 45 new ministers closely and have been amazed by Mr Festus Keyamo. His case is particularly interesting because he was written off even before his first day at work," Ikpa said. "Being a firm critic who stands up for what he believes, Keyamo is often misunderstood. Although sometimes cocky and condescending, the minister is someone who never shies away from a debate. However, over the years, he has earned a reputation for his integrity, honesty, and passion for humanity. "While the naysayers continued in their stock in trade, Keyamo quietly settled into the job and announced himself with some groundbreaking reforms, policies, and innovations. Among many others, he has suspended the fraudulent national carrier and airport concession. "It clearly shows that the minister came fully prepared for the job despite his late appointment. Keyamo already had a blueprint to sanitize, revamp, and revive the aviation sector to meet international best practices. "By doing these, he has also restored transparency, accountability, and integrity to the system. We were a laughing stock before the global community. Now, he's gradually winning the trust and support of stakeholders and investors". Ikpa, therefore, charged Keyamo to sustain the momentum until the sector is rid of every corrupt element, deal, and official. He urged the minister not to be distracted, adding in the coming days those against the progress of the nation will come out for him. The Centre, however, urged critical stakeholders and foreign partners to accord the SAN all the needed support as he means business. |
By Godswill Udenyi The lamentation about the impact of corruption on Nigeria is loud on a deafening scale. But in obsessing with corruption, there is a collective loss of sight of a more insidious evil in the polity, which is the activity of those who actively sabotage Nigeria for the benefit of foreign interests in exchange for personal gains. Alarmingly, what makes this set of saboteurs dangerous is the way they package their destructive intent to appear as patriotic intervention or advocacy for best practice. Combined with the access they have to the mainstream and social media, they can derail national focus and send the rest of us pursuing inanities. Enter Executive Director Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), Auwal Rafsanjani. A major operator in this destructive spectrum, he recently reasserted himself as unrepentant during his appearance on Channels TV’s Politics Today. In the television interview, Rafsanjani infamously asserted that the Aviation Ministry needs a minister with a stable mind as if to say the person currently manning that portfolio is unstable. Festus Keyamo, a seasoned legal practitioner, is the incumbent Minister of Aviation following his appointment, screening, and confirmation by the Senate, and swearing-in by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Keyamo served in the immediate past cabinet of President Muhammadu Buhari, in which he excelled to the point of being noted as one of the best brains in the country. Of course, the initial ministerial nomination lists did not contain Keyamo’s name, an anomaly that was protested by right-thinking Nigerians and one that President Tinubu promptly addressed with his inclusion. As expected, given Keyamo’s outspoken personality and his penchant for stepping on toes in the pursuit of national interest, some drama played out at the Senate around his confirmation, but this too was amicably resolved in the interest of reason. For a public office holder to enjoy such goodwill among his political peers and the public is not a happenstance. It is the product of consistently acting on the right side of history, acting in the public interest, and adding value to national life by leveraging the positions he held to always do the right things. It is, therefore, perplexing that Rafsanjani threw caution to the wind and picked Keyamo as the person to attack among the scores of persons that made President Tinubu’s cabinet as Ministers. In framing his attack, Rafsanjani tenuously attempted to dress Keyamo in borrowed garb by attributing to him characters that Nigerians do not know him for. He even went as far as hallucinating by saying “I think President Bola Ahmed Tinubu brought Festus Keyamo just to disgrace him.” Such naivety. What President of repute will waste an opportunity to develop the country in a bid to disgrace a phantom enemy? Certainly not President Tinubu, who sees and treats Keyamo as an ally instead of an enemy as Rafsanjani assumed. Rafsanjani’s double-facedness was exposed when he attempted to attenuate his attacks on Keyamo by referring to him as a “friend and former comrade” which was disingenuous, to say the least, because he undid that token patronage with the backstab of accusing Keyamo of being capable of creating chaos that he should have given him something (a ministry that is) less controversial. It is interesting to note that Rafsanjani is currently less of an activist than Keyamo is, even as a public officeholder; the penchant for chaos that Rafsanjani alluded to is the activist in Keyamo coming into play in the discharge of his official duties. He is passionate about protecting the rights and interests of citizens, which the Executive Director of CISLAC wrongly interpreted as being chaotic. By the way, the abuse that Nigerians have suffered at the hands of some airline operators requires the kind of activism that Keyamo can deliver. Meanwhile, proof of Rafsanjani’s compromise as a saboteur working for foreign interests against the good of Nigeria was in his assertion that “The European Union in their report on the last election quoted the character of Keyamo as someone whose actions and utterances were undemocratic.” The import is that Rafsanjani was on that television show to reactivate the foreign-backed operation to undermine the outcome of the 2023 General Elections and consequently Nigeria’s democracy. This means Rafsanjani is the undemocratic one since he is working for entities that are interested in derailing Nigeria’s democracy. Furthermore, it is pertinent to be reminded that the foreign interests seeking to undermine the outcome of the 2023 General Elections are interested in installing proxy a government of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), or a mishmash of both. Rafsanjani should be sincere in declaring which of these parties he belongs to so that his intervention in public discourse that relates to governance can be better assessed to understand his biases. Keyamo once dared to expose Rafsanjani as a mole planted by the PDP in Civil Society, so this character’s anger against the Minister of Aviation might also be tempered by that memory. It is pertinent to note that Rafsanjani runs the shop for the destructive neocon entities behind this plot under various guises including being on the boards of Transparency International and Amnesty International in Nigeria, two entities on whose behalf he has attacked other public office holders and institutions in the past. These enterprises failed. Because of his failed attempts to undermine Nigeria in the past, Rafsanjani is now desperately looking for a new business enterprise after his most recent misadventures. It is on record that this character used Amnesty International to frustrate Nigeria’s war against terrorism with claims of human rights abuses, so, the country must now be on the lookout because it appears a consortium of foreign airlines have reached out to him, as there are reports that the airlines are jittery at the reforms that Keyamo is planning in the aviation sector to protect the interest of Nigerian passengers. In conclusion, one must urge Keyamo not to be deterred by whatever Rafsanjani throws at him by way of criticism. If the latter’s modus operandi holds, he will later hold news conferences, write opinion articles, and explore media appearances to further launch attacks on the Minister. But Keyamo must always remember, especially given his experience in civil society, that this is a nuisance that is best ignored. To Rafsanjani, a friendly advisor, his foray into the aviation sector to harassattackking the Minister has failed again just as the other neocon enterprises he undertook in the past. Udenyi, a public affairs analyst wrote this piece from Kaduna.

As the world celebrates International Youth Day, I want to identify with and celebrate a group of people whose tenacity and grit have kept our nation together. Born into a country with myriad complex problems, our youths have remained resolute and continue to defy all odds to make us proud. In every sphere of human endeavor, you can and will find them thriving with that indomitable can-do, will-do spirit of our forefathers. We might have failed them but they continue to stand by us as we continue the trial-and-error process of nation-building. Breaking through the stereotype of lazy youths, they continue to hoist our nation’s flag in far flung countries doing us proud and winning laurels for us. The Nigerian Youth with little or no support from the government continues to chart a course in harnessing green skills and the potentials therein. They understand that therein lies the sustainability of our world. Today as I celebrate you, I also urge you not to give up on our dear country. Our hope lies in you. Continue to fight for our freedom and liberty. Continue to speak up against oppression and bad governance. Soon and very soon, the world will watch as you assume your rightful position in the leadership of our great nation. God bless you all. God bless and protect the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

By Philip Agbese. The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon Tajudeen Abass was the cynosure of all at the recently held 18th Commonwealth Speakers' and Presiding Officers' Conference (CSCOP) in Yaoundé, Cameroon, with the theme: 'African Parliaments and the Agenda 2063. It was such a robust platform that reiterated the role of the parliament in socio-economic development. The theme, African Parliaments and the Agenda 2063 was indeed topical and the focus of parliamentarians. The speaker highlighted the trust deficit between citizens and the government. In his words, "The people we represent, our constituents, rely on us to uphold the principles of democracy, to safeguard their interests, and to promote their welfare. Thus, openness, transparency, and accountability are not mere buzzwords but essential pillars upon which we can build a resilient democracy that serves the needs and aspirations of our people." There could be no better summation of the expectations that have risen in the face of challenging economic realities in the country. That it came from the speaker indicates that the 10th Assembly in Nigeria is poised to be different than what we have experienced in times past. Since the inauguration of the 10th Assembly and the election of principal officers, I can say it has never been a dull moment. The quality of debates, the processes, and the outcomes have been outstanding. In his commitment to providing purposeful leadership, the honorable speaker has impressed that there is a lack of trust between the citizens and the government. At the conference, the speaker reminded all of Africa's ambitious aspirations and goals, which he noted were well captured in the concepts of a prosperous Africa based on inclusive growth and sustainable development. There is a profound responsibility bestowed upon parliamentarians as trustees, delegates, and custodians of democracy to ensure a high standard of living, quality of life, and well-being for all citizens, and well-educated citizens and skills revolution underpinned by science, technology, and innovation. These worthy propositions came about due to deep reflections on the social contract entered with the citizens after securing their mandates as representatives of the people. That the speaker of the House of Representatives is leading this charge indicates that the citizens of Nigeria would be availed of such opportunities to eliminate the trust deficiency with the government. It won't be out of place to state that the election of Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abass as the speaker of the House of Representatives was timely and suited for the onerous task ahead. His grasps of issues in nation-building are intellectually inclined in such a way that renews hope and places the national interest as the central focus. The people we represent have entrusted us with the responsibility of ensuring that the government remains accountable to them through strengthening openness, transparency, and accountability. The right to access information is an essential part of open government. It enables citizens to participate more fully in public life, helps combat corruption and protect citizens' rights, supports scientific research, and stimulates trade and the economy. Good governance requires credible and trustworthy institutions built on principles of transparency and accountability. Accountability goes beyond the mere responsibility of delivering a task or service. It also means answerability if a service is not delivered promptly and efficiently and becomes a burden. It is the citizen's right but also their duty to demand it. Since governance is the process of decision-making and the process by which decisions are implemented, an analysis of governance focuses on the formal and informal actors involved in decision-making and implementing the decisions made and the formal and informal structures set in place to arrive at and implement the decision. This is the central focus of the House of Representatives under the leadership of Rt. Hon Tajudeen Abass. There is no doubt that the speaker will set the agenda rolling for the benefit of the Commonwealth Parliament. The indicators are evident n his position on upholding the tenets of transparency and accountability in the drive toward achieving AGENDA 2063. AGENDA 2063 is Africa's blueprint and master plan for transforming Africa into the global powerhouse of the future. The continent's strategic framework aims to deliver on its goal for inclusive and sustainable development. It is a concrete manifestation of the pan-African drive for unity, self-determination, freedom, progress, and collective prosperity pursued under Pan-Africanism and the African Renaissance. The Commonwealth parliament would indeed benefit from the leadership of Rt. Hon Tajudeen Abass, a consummate parliamentarian with years of experience, certainly presents an asset to be tapped. Given that charity must begin from home, The indicators are rife that Rt. Hon Tajudeen Abass would be an asset to the commonwealth parliament given his vast and robust experience as an intellectual and parliamentarian of long-standing. His commitment to advancing the legislative business is profound. His speech at the 18th Commonwealth Speakers' and Presiding Officers' Conference (CSCOP) in Yaoundé, Cameroon, spoke volumes on how parliamentarians can strengthen openness, transparency, and accountability. He stressed that securing public trust requires a comprehensive approach, necessitating robust legislative frameworks, effective oversight mechanisms, and a commitment to inclusivity and citizen engagement. In his words, promoting ethical standards, integrity, and the highest levels of probity within our ranks demands that we actively listen to the voices of our constituents, understand their concerns and aspirations, and ensure that their interests are at the heart of our decision-making processes. With this, we can forge a path toward greater openness, transparency, and accountability, strengthening the bonds of trust between our citizens and their elected representatives. This summation could not have come at a better time, and to think that Rt. Hon Tajudeen Abass's thinking along this line indicates the depth of these thoughts and the profoundness of his commitment to providing purposeful leadership. There would be positives because the time to act is now—the stance by Rt. Hon Tajudeen Abass is a welcome development for the 10th Assembly in Nigeria and across parliamentary platforms within the purview. This is a national call for parliamentarians to rise to the occasion to give our constituents renewed hope. We must act in ways and manners that would reduce or eliminate the trust deficit between the government and the citizens. Attaining Agenda 2063 is a collective action that requires strategic steps must be taken. In the 10th Assembly, these steps have been taken, and the results would trickle in due time. I wish to use this medium to urge Nigerians to show support to the 10th Assembly. The days ahead are bright. The commitment to drive sustainable growth and development is unflinching with Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abass leading the charge in the House of Representatives. Agbese MHR is Deputy Spokesman, Nigeria House of Representatives writing from Abuja.

Coalition of Civil Society Groups Calls on Senate to Investigate Ministerial Nominee A coalition of civil society groups is calling on the Senate to investigate the nomination of Tunji Ojo as minister. The groups, led by Policy Advocacy and Integrity Network Nigeria (PAIN), say that Ojo has a history of certificate-related issues and should not be confirmed without a thorough investigation. In a letter to the Senate President, the groups said that Ojo has been accused of forging his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate. They also said that Ojo has been investigated by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for alleged corrupt practices. "We are calling on the Senate to invoke its powers to investigate these allegations," the groups said. "If the allegations are true, then Ojo should not be confirmed as a minister." The groups said that they are concerned about the integrity of the government and that they want to ensure that only qualified and honest people are appointed to ministerial positions. "We believe that the Senate has a responsibility to ensure that the government is made up of people who have the highest ethical standards," the groups said. "We urge the Senate to take our concerns seriously and to investigate these allegations thoroughly." The letter was signed by Joe F. Mesele, the convener and executive director of PAINN.

Security Agencies Urged to Fish Out Owners of Vessels, Yard Used for Illegal Crude Oil Activities. In a strong-worded statement, security agencies have been urged to arrest and prosecute the owners and their accomplices. Ebenco Global Link Limited yard owned by one EBENEZER OLUWAGBEMIGA happens to be one of the biggest illegal refining depots in the country and it is used by some of the most influential Nigerians for their nefarious bunkering activities. Since this depot was uncovered no arrests or prosecution has been made. Information at our disposal suggests that the powers behind this operation are exercising their influence in the corridors of power to ensure that nothing is done about this matter. We can all recollect what happened when vessels linked to the Indian operator Sterling Global were nabbed with stolen products. That matter died a natural death and the Indians are still operating with impunity. The call comes after the MV TREASURE HUB and Ebenco Global Link Limited were caught conducting cargo operations in their yard on July 17, 2023. The statement, which was issued by a coalition of civil society organizations led by Its convener, Comrade Osborne Otobo, said that the security agencies must "ensure that these individuals or groups face the law no matter how highly placed or connected they are." "They can never be bigger than Nigeria," the statement said. The coalition also called on the public to come forward with any information they have about the activities of the MV TREASURE HUB or the Ebenco Global Link Limited yard. "Together, we can help to stop illegal crude oil and gas activities in Nigeria," the statement said. The illegal crude oil trade is a major problem in Nigeria, costing the country billions of dollars in lost revenue each year. It also contributes to environmental damage and pollution. The security agencies have made some progress in cracking down on the illegal crude oil trade, but more needs to be done. The coalition's statement is a reminder that the fight against illegal crude oil is not over. Security agencies must be relentless in their pursuit of those who are involved in this criminal activity. They must also work to ensure that the public is aware of the dangers of illegal crude oil and gas activities. Together, we can make Nigeria a more prosperous and safer country by stopping the illegal crude oil trade.

Tanita Security Services Operatives Intercept Vessel Loaded with Stolen Crude Oil Tanita Security Services operatives have intercepted a vessel loaded with crude oil suspected to be stolen. The vessel, MT PRAISEL, was being escorted by a Navy boat led by Cdr Samuel Samba Musa. However, the Tantita operatives stood their ground with the backing of the NSA and the CNS and have taken the suspicious vessel into custody. The incident occurred on August 2, 2023, in the koko area of Delta State. The Tantita operatives were conducting a routine patrol when they spotted the vessel. The vessel was flying a Togolese flag, but the operatives had intelligence that it was carrying stolen crude oil. When the Tantita operatives attempted to board the vessel, they were met with resistance from the Navy boat. Cdr Musa threatened to deal decisively with the Tantita operatives, but they refused to back down. The NSA and the CNS were eventually contacted, and they gave the Tantita operatives the authorization to take the vessel into custody. NNPCL officials are believed to be on their way to Okporoza to begin their investigation. We are the vessel is being held to begin their investigation at Tantita Security Services compound. This is the latest in a series of incidents involving the theft of crude oil in Nigeria. In recent years, the country has lost billions of dollars due to oil theft. The government has been working to crack down on the problem, but it has been difficult to stop the thieves. The interception of MT PRAISEL is a significant development in the fight against oil theft in Nigeria.

The Northern Youth Vanguard for Renewed Hope (NYVRH) has called on President Bola Tinubu to appoint immediate past Plateau Governor, Rt Hon Simon Lalong, as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). In a statement signed by its President, Comrade Williams Ochonu, the group said it is high time the North-Central produces an FCT Minister after over 24 years of democracy. Ochonu said, indeed, all the heads of the capital city since 1999 have come from the north, but the last from the North Central was Mamman Kontagora during the military era. Beyond the perceived marginalization, the group said only someone from the region could easily relate to the yearnings of the inhabitants. According to Ochonu, Lalong is the best man for the job, having proven to be an achiever with a track record of competence, integrity, and excellence. "It is not enough to demand that the office of the FCT Minister be zoned to the North Central. Indeed the region has often been marginalized. But our case is that at this time, there's someone from the North Central who is perfect for the job," Ochonu said. "The consensus is that Rt Hon Lalong is the most qualified, experienced, and prepared for the assignment. He also flaunts an unrivaled track record, capacity, and pedigree. "He will not only settle the perceived religious and sectional bias, but he is also a man who has, over the years, displayed exceptional capacity, sagacity, and effective leadership. He is a unifier and detribalized Nigerian. " Lalong is a well-known achiever, a man who understands the Renewed Hope agenda and has demonstrated distinction over the years. " His incredible track record as a result-oriented and performance-driven leader, one with a penchant for excellence, integrity, and accountability, has given us much hope that the Nigeria of our dreams is possible. "He has the qualities, experience, and capacity for the assignment. This is a governor for eight years and a state assembly speaker for eight years also. "In the last 16 years, Mr Lalong has shown exceptional leadership qualities. He worked closely with the President during the campaigns and has a firm grip on the Renewed Hope Agenda. "As one of the leading voices from the 19 northern states, we, therefore, believe that Lalong will excel in this role and make the North Central proud".

...Says Mama Remi is a defender of Christ and his house Hon Philip Agbese (APC-Benue), representing Ado/ Okpokwu/ Ogbadibo Federal Constituency, has dismissed claims that First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, closed the AsoRock Chapel. Agbese said it is deleterious and despicable to make such unfounded allegations against a woman he describes as a defender of Jesus Christ and his house. A Twitter user with the username @VeronicaaNaomi had alleged that the First Lady ordered the closure of the chapel. She claimed that her directive was because some unnamed persons did not support her husband, President Bola Tinubu, during the presidential election in February 2023. However, the First Lady has since refuted the claims as "fabrication and false representation of the true situation." And Agbese said it was shameful that such a report even surfaced in the first place, knowing full well the sacrifices of Mrs. Tinubu to the Body of Christ. According to the lawmaker, the First Lady is a strong woman of faith who is one of the leading and most vocal Christian voices in the nation. He said she went through the preparatory stages of Baptismal and workers in training classes before becoming a Pastor in 2018. Agbese noted that Tinubu's boldness, courage, and spiritual insights are similar to Esther's in the Bible. As Esther stood before the king to save her people even though it would be risking her life, the Benue rep member said Senator is doing the same through self-sacrifice and advocacy. Agbese, therefore, urged Nigerians to disregard such a fallacy aimed at distracting the First Lady and her husband. He added that the motive of the author is to plant a seed of hatred in the hearts of Christians against the current administration, which will not germinate. Agbese, however, charged Christians to see the First Lady as God's instrument at this hour to intercede on behalf of a sick nation. The congressman further said the time for politics of ethnicity, religion, and bias is in the past, urging all Nigerians to support President Tinubu. |
...Says Tinubu Needs More Intelligent Young Nigerians To Renew Our Hopes Rep Philip Agbese (APC), the lawmaker representing Ado/ Okpokwu/ Ogbadibo Federal Constituency, has applauded the Managing Director (MD), Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Engr Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad, for his post-subsidy removal initiatives. Agbese said Salihijo's exceptional leadership to fulfill the mandate of the REA has come to the fore since the President's bold decision to do away with the subsidy regime. Describing the Agency as an implementing tool for improved energy access among the unserved and the underserved, Agbese said the MD has taken up the adoption of solar energy as the most viable solution to mitigate the hardship. He further said the REA boss has provided sustainable and empowering solution for Nigeria to alleviate the burden of escalating fuel costs and ensure uninterrupted power supply to communities nationwide. According to Agbese, the adoption of solar energy has expedited industrial activities, fostered agricultural growth, and bolstered small and medium enterprises. The lawmaker listed the solar hybrid mini-grid project in Lavun Local Government Area of Niger State, the 60 KiloWatts Mini-Grid Project in Kilankwa Community, Abuja, Ayegbaju International Market Osun, Osogbo, Ijebu Ode, and Makoko among others as the recent REA projects. "As a young Nigerian, I am proud of the exploits of the REA boss. He is a testament that there are still incredibly gifted young people in this country," Agbese said. "The REA has adopted solar energy as a sustainable and empowering solution for Nigeria as the country grapples with the challenges resulting from the removal of fuel subsidies. By harnessing the abundant solar resources available in Nigeria, the Agency has alleviated the burden of escalating fuel costs and ensure uninterrupted power supply to communities nationwide. " The current management approached the business of electrification differently, through a five-year strategy document that has strengthened the internal workings of the Agency, improved the Agency’s project delivery vehicles and activated new suite of programmes targeted at critical ecosystems such as the health sector, agriculture and education. "The REA strategy has succeeded in positioning the Agency for deeper-level impact on livelihoods while enabling the private sector to plug into it for the sustainable deployment of projects through a programmatic framework "A cursory look at the available data shows that 67 mini-grids have been completed, 1,206, female-headed MSMEs have been electrified, 1,151 jobs have been created, and 267 grant agreements have been signed. These interconnected projects, aimed at improving small businesses for young Nigerians, are timely when youth unemployment stands at 53.40 per cent. "No surprise the World Bank announced plans to commit the sum of $750 million through the Nigeria Electrification Project (NEP) to boost rural electrification and enable Nigerians to have better access to electricity. Salihijo is doing something right and must be supported. " Agbese, therefore, called on state governments to partner with the REA to fulfill its mandate of providing electricity to Nigerians in unreached communities. He noted that through the Agency’s deliberate cooperation with key stakeholders in the nation’s off-grid space, it has greatly improved productive collaborations with private sector players and development partners over the years. The lawmaker, however, urged President Bola Tinubu to appoint more competent young Nigerians like Salihijo to achieve his Renewed Hope agenda.

By Philip Agbese The dawn of a dispensation signifies a new meaning to the way of life. Undoubtedly, Nigeria has experienced the best and worst of leaders. While some of these leaders were intentional in their actions, others were ignorant. Unfortunately, Nigerians have always borne the brunt of these actions, either positive or negative. This indeed brings to the fore the role of leadership in the survival of any nation. Some may argue that leaders are born and not made. Others believe that leadership is about intentions. In my considered opinion, however, there is an intersection between divinity and intentions. Leaders with a purpose of making a meaningful impact and leaders with motives that serve self-aggrandizement. The intents aspect is deliberate and a result of certain inherent traits manifesting in human intellectual activities. One such leader with genuine and innate intention is Rt. Hon Tajudeen Abbas, the Honorable Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives. His emergence came with a load of expectations. Some have alluded that Rt. Hon Abbas carries on with such seriousness in all his endeavors. Some of them included the quality of his contributions to legislative matters in times past. There have been arguments concerning his suitability for leadership of the Green Chambers. Few critics claim he is a stooge of the Executive. But for me, I see a man on a mission to make legislation a serious business. The parlance where preparation meets opportunity and success aptly describes Rt Hon Tajudeen Abbas. As a high-ranking member of the House and chair of several important committees, he was indeed prepared for the task ahead. Some might ask what he is bringing to the table. No doubt, loads of ideas and deliberate intentions are crucial to translate the act of legislature into serious business. As such, the 10th Assembly would experience purposeful leadership. Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas is a consummate parliamentarian and an intellectual whose grasps of issues around governance are on another level. Of course, he boasts of an intimidating resume that spans decades of brilliance and a penchant for proffering solutions to societal issues. He is reputed as a problem solver. The Speaker is also seen as a critical thinker that matches words with actions. You could ascribe these attributes to his successful intellectual career. His tenure as Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives would be robust and encompassing. Nigerians would be impressed with the quality of the legislative business from the Green Chamber. A team player, his disposition to issues resonates with national interest. And he doesn't pretend about it and sometimes goes overboard. That is a plus because the business of governance must be taken seriously, considering the challenges confronting the country. There are sacrifices to be made, and one of them is total devotion to putting issues in proper perspective. This is the trademark of Rt. Hon Tajudeen Abass. You can hate him for all he cares, but it doesn't take away the burden that is before all of us. We have toyed with governance for several years, and now the country deserves leaders with intentions and purpose. The emergence of Rt Hon Tajudeen Abass as Speaker is the best decision in the interest of the nation. His leadership of the Green Chamber would usher in a new way of life. It would redefine the art of legislation. It would also bring about tangible reforms in our laws toward addressing those issues that have held us down over the years. The interesting part of the unfolding scenario is that members of the House of Representatives have seen the light and have also keyed into the vision of making legislation a serious business. Exciting times are ahead, and it behooves all to imbibe the attribute of selflessness in the task ahead of us in putting the country on a sound footing. The Tajudeen Abass era will be the game-changer. Legislation is a serious business, and the Parliament plays a very vital role in the development of any society. That is the philosophy of Rt. Hon Tajudeen Abass. I identify with his passion and commitment to providing purposeful leadership when it matters most. This piece is a clarion call for all progressive-minded Nigerians to rally support for him to succeed. The necessity of now requires that all hands are on deck. Rep Agbese is a member of the 10th Assembly writing from Abuja. |
The publisher of the Reflector Newspaper and the spokesperson for the Nigeria ruling party in the United Kingdom, Hon. Jacob Ogunseye has been honoured for his roles in youth development and advocacy. A highly elated Ogunseye could not hide his feelings as he described the award as a testament to a collective commitment to education, progress, and the future of our beloved Nigeria. In a speech delivered on his behalf by the immediate past Vice-President of IYF, Hon. Adebusuyi Tobiloba Adeleye, Ogunseye said he was deeply honoured and humbled to address the esteemed gathering as an award recipient in the Federation of Ijesa Students Union National Headquarters. This event, the FISU Week Grand Finale, brings together talented and passionate students from across Ijesaland, both in Nigeria and the Diaspora. “Today, I want to talk to you about a topic that is close to my heart and one that I believe holds the key to unlocking the true potential of our nation—the harnessing of the future of Nigeria through investment in youth and education. It is undeniable that the youth are the backbone of any society, and in Nigeria, with our vast population and vibrant energy, we possess an incredible resource that, if properly harnessed, can propel our nation to great heights. “Education is the cornerstone upon which nations are built, and investing in education is an investment in the future. We must recognize that education goes beyond mere academic knowledge. It is about equipping our youth with the skills, values, and mindset necessary to navigate an increasingly complex and interconnected world. It is about nurturing their creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. It is about empowering them to become active participants in shaping their destinies and the destiny of our nation. “To harness the future of Nigeria, we must prioritize quality education that is accessible to all, irrespective of their background or socioeconomic status. This means improving the infrastructure of our educational institutions, providing adequate resources and learning materials, and ensuring the professional development of our teachers. We must also embrace technology and innovation in education, leveraging digital platforms and tools to expand access and enhance learning outcomes. “Additionally, investing in youth means providing them with opportunities for skills development, entrepreneurship and employment. We must create an enabling environment that encourages innovation and supports the aspirations of our young people. This includes fostering partnerships between educational institutions and industries, promoting vocational and technical education, and providing mentorship and networking opportunities. By doing so, we can unleash the entrepreneurial spirit and ingenuity of our youth, driving economic growth and sustainable development. “Furthermore, investment in youth and education must be accompanied by policies that promote good governance, transparency, and accountability. We must create an environment that fosters trust, encourages investment, and ensures that resources allocated to education are utilized effectively and efficiently. This requires collaboration between the government, private sector, civil society, and international partners to develop and implement comprehensive strategies that address the multifaceted challenges facing our education system. “As we look to the future, let us remember that investing in our youth and education is not a choice but a necessity. The potential of our nation lies in the hands of our young people, and it is our collective responsibility to nurture and empower them. By harnessing their talents, providing them with quality education, and creating opportunities for their growth and development, we can build a prosperous and inclusive Nigeria for generations to come. “I encourage the Federation of Ijesa Students Union to continue its commendable efforts in promoting unity, academic excellence, and the welfare of Ijesaland students. “In conclusion, I would like to express my gratitude to the Federation of Ijesa Students Union for this honour and for organizing this remarkable event. Together, let us commit ourselves to the task of harnessing the future of Nigeria through investment in our youth and education. May we be guided by the words of Nelson Mandela, who said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." Let us embrace this power and transform Nigeria into a beacon of hope, progress, and prosperity.” Other award recipients at the occasion include Mr. Tijani Usman (General Beltij), the National President, Igbimo Oduduwa Youth Consultative Forum for the Excellence in Leadership Award; Hon. An independent poll conducted ahead of the November 2023 Governorship election in Bayelsa State, has predicted the incumbent Governor of the State, Senator Duoye Diri, as the likely winner of the election. The survey conducted between May and June 2023, showed that the majority of eligible voters in Bayelsa State are in support of a renewed tenure for, Senator Duoye Diri. This fact was revealed through a poll conducted by CellHub, a Data Mining and Analysis Group, alongside a consortium of Data Analysts and a team of development experts. The poll carried out through an informal engagement of twenty eligible voters across all of the one hundred and five wards, of the state, showed a larger percentage of respondents, forty-eight percent (48%) throwing their weight behind the reelection of Governor Diri, for a second term bid. According to the figures derived from the survey, respondents, totaling about thirty-four percent (34%) remain undecided on their choice of candidate, while eighteen percent (18%) are throwing their weight behind the candidate of the All Progressives Congress APC, Chief Timipre Sylva, a former Governor of the State. They stated that the proactive and frontal management of the COVID-19 pandemic, Governor Diri’s giant strides in the infrastructural sector, calmness, maturity, as well as his easy-going nature are part of the qualities which have continued to endear him to them. It added that based on the poll, Senator Diri is the “most dominant and widely accepted candidate,” followed by Chief Timipre Sylva of the APC. “It is worthy of note, however, that the 34 percent figure, which represents the largely undecided voters and indifferent could sway the outcome in favor of the governorship candidate who can harness their voting strength,” the group explained. The poll conducted covered all the one hundred five wards in the eight Local Government Areas of the state with a total number of 2100 respondents, which will be reviewed fortnightly.
