Speaking at the first annual lecture of the Lagos State Professorial Chair of Tax and Fiscal Matters at the University of Lagos, Minister of Finance Kemi Adeosun disclosed that Nigeria has 70 million taxable adults but only 40 million of them pay taxes.

She said that 13% of active tax payers have their taxes deducted at source under the Pay as You Earn (PAYE) category.

“I have kept asking why the 30 million people have refused to pay taxes. Another major challenge is the fact that many Nigerians have other sources of income, yet they are only taxed only through the PAYE. Yet, they earn so much from part-time jobs, and extra businesses,” Adeosun said, adding that tax policies need regular reviews and should not be rigid.



According to The Nation, Adeosun said new tax policies must capture online businesses, entrepreneurship and the creative industry.

Transport Minister, Rotimi Amaechi has revealed why he dumped the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Amaechi said his pursuit for change made him to dump the former ruling party for APC.

Speaking in Lagos, the former Rivers State Governor said he would have done otherwise by staying in PDP and fight for the change, but there was a need to cross over to APC because of his belief in President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said, “I moved from PDP to APC because I am tired of what is happening in the party, I have the option to stay because of my position as the Chairman of the Governors then.

“I can use my position to fight them (PDP) and get what I want because I believe Nigeria was not going in the right direction by then.

“My attention and belief shifted to Buhari which was the viable alternative, I believe in the change mantra because it is the only way to improve on what is on ground.

“He has not disappointed because the economy is now back on track and is growing. This is evident in the current prices of food items because it’s getting lower.’’

One Soldier was feared killed and two others missing during a fierce gun-battle between troops of Operation Lafiya Dole and remnants of Boko Haram insurgents around the Gwari/Ganye axis of Borno State.

At least six soldiers died in two separate Boko Haram ambushes in northeast Nigeria, military and civilian militia sources said on Monday.

Four troops were killed and 12 injured on Sunday when their convoy was attacked near Damboa, 90 kilometres (56 miles) from Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state.

Two soldiers were killed in the same area on Saturday, the sources told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity as they were not allowed to talk to the media.

A military officer in Maiduguri said Sunday’s ambush happened when troops were on patrol between the villages of Nyeneri and Falawani.

“The terrorists came in huge numbers and attacked the convoy using IEDs (improvised explosive devices) and gun trucks,” he added.

A member of the civilian self-defence force gave a similar account and death toll, and said the jihadists made off with weapons before reinforcements arrived.

He added: “Two soldiers died on Saturday when the six vehicles they travelling in came under heavy attack from Boko Haram near Bulaburin (village),” said the militia source.

The attacks came days after the military replaced the officer leading troops fighting Boko Haram following a surge in attacks, including against military outposts.

The army maintains the redeployment of Major-General Ibrahim Attahiru was routine, and the officer himself said suggestions he was sacked are “far from the truth”.

He said in his farewell speech to troops on Monday that his move was “a normal exercise” and his redeployment to army headquarters in Abuja was a “call to higher responsibility”.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people displaced by the violence deserted a makeshift camp in Birimari village, in the Nganzai district of Borno, some 80 km north of Maiduguri.

Troops had been sent to the village, which is the birthplace of Borno state governor Kashim Shettima, two years ago but soldiers were withdrawn last week, locals said.

One of the displaced, Idrissa Karim, fled with others to Gajiram, the district headquarters, as fears spread of a possible attack.

A bus driver who plies the route from the garrison town of Monguno to Maiduguri, which passes through Birimari and Gajiram, confirmed the displaced people had moved on.

“The IDPs (internally displaced persons) were packing their tents and few belongings from the camp at Birimari and heading to Gajiram for fear of Boko Haram attack after soldiers left the village,” the driver said.

As well as leaving at least 20,000 dead, the eight-year conflict has forced millions from their homes. IDPs remain vulnerable because of a lack of security in camps and elsewhere.

As near universal criticism of Trump’s decision mounted, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held talks with EU foreign ministers in Brussels, declaring that the move he has lauded as historic “makes peace possible”.

But further protests were being planned for Lebanon and Iran as well as in east Jerusalem and the Palestinian territories.

Hezbollah, which fought a war with Israel in 2006, called for the demonstration in Beirut’s southern suburbs, with large crowds and a speech by the Shiite group’s leader Hassan Nasrallah expected in the afternoon.

A large turnout was also expected for a protest in Tehran.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Sunday that Trump’s decision threw “fuel on the fire” of Middle Eastern tensions and would not be tolerated.

A protest was being organised in the afternoon in front of a US cultural centre in east Jerusalem, while another was planned for Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank.

In Ramallah on Monday, dozens of Palestinians threw stones at Israeli soldiers in the latest such clash.

Palestinian demonstrations have declined in number and intensity since reaching a peak on Friday, but there are concerns they will again increase later this week.

Four Palestinians have so far been killed in clashes or Israeli air strikes in response to rocket fire from Gaza, while hundreds have been wounded.

Tens of thousands have also demonstrated in a range of Middle Eastern and Muslim nations.

‘Rejected and denounced’
Palestinian leaders have been outraged by Trump’s move, but they also face difficult choices in how to respond since they rely on US aid and would like to salvage remaining hopes of a two-state solution to the conflict.

Abbas will refuse to meet with US Vice President Mike Pence when he visits the region later this month, Palestinian officials say, a move that led Washington to accuse the Palestinian leader of “walking away” from a chance to discuss peace.

Abbas was on Monday to hold talks with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in Egypt — a key US ally in the region — ahead of a summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the main pan-Islamic body, on Wednesday.

“Our message to the entire world is that Jerusalem is a Palestinian city and the US decision is rejected and denounced,” Abbas spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh said, quoted by official news agency WAFA.

“What is required now are bold Palestinian and Arab decisions for the coming stage, which is very important and very critical. The Palestinians and Arabs should stand together.”

Netanyahu, who has been dogged by corruption investigations against him at home, has lauded the US president’s declaration and called for other countries to follow suit.

On Monday, he was in Brussels as part of a two-day trip to Europe after having met French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris the previous day, with the visits having been planned before Trump’s declaration.

Macron urged Netanyahu to “show courage” and take measures to restart long-stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts, including freezing settlement construction in the West Bank.

Netanyahu, who heads what is seen as the most right-wing government in Israeli history, showed no sign of obliging, instead seeking to place blame on the Palestinians for stalled peace efforts.

He met EU foreign ministers in Brussels on Monday, the first such talks with an Israeli premier in 22 years and after the bloc’s diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini warned Trump’s move could take the situation “backwards to even darker times”.

Netanyahu had a starkly different view.

“It doesn’t obviate peace, it makes peace possible, because recognising reality is the substance of peace, it’s the foundation of peace,” Netanyahu said alongside Mogherini.

The Nigerian temporary employment scheme, N-Power has dropped an update for volunteers who are yet to collect their devices.

In an information it shared on its official website on Saturday morning, the scheme warned those causing trouble by going to other centers in demand of their devices to desist.

While calling on participants to report any form of exploitation or unfair treatment from their staff, the scheme also asked participants to remain in their centers of device collection.

It wrote, “For everyone collecting devices at this time, we want to be very clear that you are expected to conduct yourselves properly at ALL times.

“Where you are exploited or treated unfairly, we will address the situation.

“What happened yesterday in a particular state MUST NEVER happen again. No member of our distribution partners must ever be threatened physically or harmed in any way.

“If you are asked to go to a Center and the Center is locked or not opened for whatever reason, contact us and we will address immediately.

“It is NOT for you to go to other centers where you were not invited to, to disrupt work activities.

“Let us be clear, that behaviour is UNACCEPTABLE and it will have consequences.”

Mr Afolabi Imoukhuede, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Job Creation/Youth Employment, in a statement made available to newsmen described such action as unacceptable.

“I received with great displeasure the report that N-Power beneficiaries in Warri bombarded the Warri 1 MTN Connect Store for N-Power devices last Monday.

“The beneficiaries were unruly and assaulted a pregnant staff member of MTN.

“There is no excuse tenable for such behavior; let me be very clear, that such behavior is unacceptable; there is no reason under the face of the sun for such behavior,’’ Imoukhuede stated.

According to him, this terrible behaviour will be investigated and appropriate sanctions will be meted out to those found to be behind this ugly incidence.

He said the notice should also serve as a warning to other beneficiaries who might wish to temporarily forget the acceptable conduct at the point of device collection.

“Anyone who is caught will be dismissed immediately from the N-Power programme.

“At all times, the interest of the beneficiaries is our utmost concern and we will continue to address issues that distress you individually and collectively,’’ the presidential aide added.

Imoukhuede remarked that proper conduct, discipline and work place ethics are the hallmark of the N-Power programme – skills and job enhancement creation investment under the National Social Investment Programme (NSIP).

He said, ” under the NSIP, our unemployed youths have an opportunity to improve their skills and competence under a two-year Full Time Paid Volunteer programme in their community schools, health centres or farms.’’

He added that the skills acquisition would thus empower them for gainful employment after their exit from the programme.

Imoukhuede recalled that the Federal Government entered into an Asset Finance Agreement with the Bank of Industry to provide devices to N-Power beneficiaries at little or no cost.

“At every point between purchasing, pre-loading and now distribution, we have updated beneficiaries.

“We had even gone as far as uploading videos of the pre-loading process so beneficiaries could witness first-hand the hard work that goes into packaging each device.

“We similarly explained the process of shipping from the point of pre-loading to individual states,’’ he added.

Consequently, the presidential aide warned volunteers against fomenting trouble as misconducts would not be tolerated.

Newsmen report that no fewer than 200,000 graduates nationwide have been participating in N-Power since 2016 and earning N30,000 each monthly, while another batch of 300,000 would soon be engaged.

1. The Nigeria LNG Limited has formally issued a demand notice for $315,598,823.29 judgment debt to the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency.

The NLNG said in a statement that the sum represented the payments it made under protest to the agency since 2013, as well as direct and shipping losses it incurred due to the initial two-day blockade of the Bonny Channel by NIMASA in May 2013.

2. A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, has urged the Federal High Court in Abuja to restrain President Muhammadu Buhari from continuing to hold the office of the Minister of Petroleum Resources.

The SAN hinged his decision on Section 138 of the 1999 Constitution, which forbids the President from “holding any other executive office or paid employment.”

3. The World Bank has disagreed with the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, on the need for the Federal Government to borrow more in order to develop the nation’s infrastructure and stimulate the economy.

The World Bank while speaking through its Senior Economist, Gloria Joseph-Raji, on Monday in Abuja, said that the cost of borrowing or paying interest on Nigeria’s debt was not sustainable as revenues to make such payment had dried up.

4. The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has said all the Monkey Pox test samples obtained from Lagos tested negative.

He, however said only four cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in Nigeria.

5. There was serious tension in Delta State as Armed Aladja, Ogbe-Ijoh youths engaged themselves in a gun battle. The youths in Udu and Warri South-West Local Government Areas have been engaging in communal clash.

Several houses and other properties in Ogbe-Ijoh community were destroyed during the melee.

6. The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde; a former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala have stated that Nigeria, Argentina and other top countries battling corruption should use tools that can help reduce procurement costs by about 60 per cent.

They urged the countries to strengthen institutions, provide incentives against corruption and deploy more technology in order to overcome the hydra-headed problem of corruption.

7. Over 27 persons have been killed while asleep in Nkiedonwhro community, Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State by unknown gunmen suspected to be Fulani militants.

The killings happened barely 48 hours after the imposition of a dusk-to-dawn curfew by Governor Simon Lalong in the LGA.

8. The inferno that engulfed the Abuja residence of the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, was a “minor fire incident”, the ministry has stated.

The Director, Press Relations in the Ministry, Mr Idang Alibi, said there was no substantial damage.

9. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday suffered a serious upset when a faction of the party led by Prince Kenneth Emeakayi staged a rally at the Alex Ekwueme Square Awka and disowned the party’s candidate in the November 18 governorship election, Mr. Oseloka Henry Obaze.

The faction with the name Anambra Grassroots Movement (AGM) and made up of the original PDP members and leaders declared that Obaze was not a registered member of PDP.

10. Tension has allegedly engulfed Sunshine Stars players following reports that no fewer than 20 of them will need to get the sack to make the Akure Premier League side stronger ahead of the new season.

The story of Cain and Abel is one of the popular stories in the Bible.

It’s a story that has stayed with many of us. Cain killed his brother Abel because he envied the way God blessed him. The story of Cain and Abel is the first story of sibling rivalry in the Bible.



Thousands of years later, we are reading about a new sibling rivalry, the one between Peter and Paul Okoye. The twin brothers known as the super pop group Psquare have been in a squabble for some time now.

The latest episode in this pop telenovela shows Peter and Paul fighting themselves.

The video clip which surfaced earlier today, Tuesday, September 26, 2017, shows the two brothers scuffling. Their big bro and manager Jude ‘ Engees’ Okoye is also in the now viral clip.

This is the first time we have evidence of the two brothers fighting. Since 2014, we have heard rumours and read stories of the trouble between Peter and Paul.

When the family drama reared its ugly head again in 2016, the pessimists dismissed it as a publicity stunt. This video now shows us how real the beef is between the twin bothers. Any initial illusion that this has been recurring stunt has been thrown out of the window. This is as real as it gets.

It’s an ugly sight when flesh and blood fights. Since the release of “Last Nite” in 2003, Psquare has fed Nigerians with beautiful songs, alluring hooks, ravishing videos and exquisite albums. It wouldn’t be wrong to call Psquare legendary.

One of the main selling points of Psquare is that it is made up of identical twins who are good at what they do. Nigerians have a soft spot for twins.

In the beginning, Peter and Paul both performed electric dance moves on the stage and in their music videos. Later on, they would concentrate on their individual strengths. Peter, the showman focused more on dancing and Paul the musician focused more on the music.

Another strategy that has made Psquare evergreen is the group’s no-nonsense and strictly business approach to making music. Peter and Paul have crafted songs and albums that cater to the tastes of Nigerians. The group doesn’t force feed the audience. It creates music according to the consumer’s tastes.

The brothers have never pretended to be music saviours nor paraded themselves as highly artistic. Psquare gives people what they want- feel good and easy to consume music.

The strategy has worked for over a decade. Many artists and groups have come and gone but Psquare has remained.

A decade after its debut album, the family feud would begin. In 2014, cracks began to appear in the Okoye empire with stories of the twins fighting themselves. There were rumours that Peter and Paul were going to split. It never happened as they reconciled shortly after.

They released an album after that infamous squabble titled “Double Trouble”. The album produced hits such as ‘Shekini’ and ‘E ja jo’ featuring T.I. It was a success but some felt that the sibling rivalry rubbed Psquare of some of its shine.

Two years later, the in-house fighting would spill all over social media. It was worse this time around and it wasn’t short-lived. The brothers (Jude Okoye included) dragged themselves on Instagram. It felt like a bad TV series at some point. The white flag was raised by all parties later on but we guess the scars never truly healed based on what we are watching now.

it that is the problem. The public fighting is threatening Psquare’s legacy.

The pop group has worked so hard to be relevant for years. It would be a shame to see its legacy messed up by Peter and Paul not dealing with their issues behind closed doors.

Is this how they want to end this? They should ride into the sunset but instead, they are tearing up what they have achieved. Nobody wins when the family feuds. Peter and Paul would be on the losing end if this drama continues.

Falz took to his instagram page to share a billboard poster of ‘Golden face of Niger Delta Cultural Festival’ and wrote;

What happened?
North Korea has launched another missile over Japan, a day after it threatened to “sink” the country and turn the US “into ashes and darkness”.
The missile – which was fired from Sunan, just north of Pyongyang, on Friday morning at 6.57am Japanese local time (21.57 GMT Thursday) – flew over the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido before landing, 20 minutes after launch, in the Pacific Ocean, 2,200km east of Cape Erimo.
The US and South Korea said they believed it to be an intermediate-range ballistic missile, although the Japanese foreign minister Taro Kono said it could be an intercontinental ballistic missile, which has a significantly greater range and which Pyongyang claimed to have tested successfully in July.
Friday’s launch was the longest-ever such flight carried out by the rogue regime, and travelled 3,700km – 800km further than the previous launch over Japan, in August.
The US Pacific territory of Guam, which Kim Jong-un has threatened to attack, is 3,400km from North Korea. But the US military said the direction of the missile meant the island was not at risk.
Experts said it was likely to be another Hwasong-12 missile, as used in the August test.
People living in regions near the missile flight path in Hokkaido received two text alerts on Friday morning, the first warning them to seek shelter, and the second giving an all-clear.
