Submission of business plans for the you win business competition kick started on Monday 17th November 2014 and its ongoing as at the time of writing this post.

For the benefits of doubt, YouWiN which stands for Youth Enterprise with Innovation in Nigeria – is an innovative business plan competition, by the federal government of Nigeria, aimed at job creation by encouraging and supporting aspiring entrepreneurial youth in Nigeria to develop and execute business ideas.

The first round of the competition was awarded in 2011 with 1200 successful businesses. For your information, YouWin is real and totally transparent as you don’t need to know anybody to win it.

GOAL OF THE YOUWIN PROGRAMME

The main objective of the Youth Enterprise with Innovation in Nigeria (YouWiN!) Programme is to generate jobs by encouraging and supporting aspiring entrepreneurial youth in Nigeria to develop and execute business ideas that will lead to job creation. The programme will provide aspiring youth with a platform to show case their business acumen, skills and aspirations to business leaders, investors and mentors in Nigeria.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME:

Attract ideas and innovations from young entrepreneurial aspirants from Universities, Polytechnics, Technical colleges, and other post-Secondary institutions in Nigeria;
Provide a one time Equity grant for 1,200 selected aspiring entrepreneurs to start or expand their business concepts and mitigate start up risks;
Generate 80,000 to 110,000 new jobs for currently unemployed Nigerian youth over the three years during which the three cycles will be implemented;
Provide business training for up to 6,000 aspiring youth entrepreneurs spread across all geo-political zones in Nigeria;
Encourage expansion, specialization and spin-offs of existing businesses in Nigeria; and,
Enable young entrepreneurs to access a wide business professional network and improve their visibility.
Who is eligible to apply

TO be able to apply for the youWin competition, you must meet the following criteria

You must be a proven citizen of Nigeria no older than 40 years (proof of identity: International passport/Drivers License/National ID/Voters card required)
You must have a post-secondary school qualification
Your proposed business venture must be within the national borders of Nigeria, and with the intention of employing Nigerian citizens.
Your proposed venture must not entail the production or distribution of weapons, alcoholic beverages, tobacco or/and gambling, or any activities in contradiction with the Nigerian constitution
You must prepare an innovative business concept summary
You must choose to participate in one award pool. There are 6 regional pools on the basis of geo-political zone as identified by market in which you want to do business.

How to fill the YouWin business plan.

YouWIN is looking for three main things in a business plan.

 Innovation
Uniqueness
Viability
Innovation:

By innovation, it means introducing new things, ideas or new ways of doing something that probably has already been in existence.

Uniqueneess:

This means coming up with an idea that is one of a kind.

Viability:

This shows how profitable the business idea is. You need to come up with a business idea that you can demonstrate to YouWIN that it is profitable.

You’re going to discover that in this year’s questions, you have limited words to convey you point hence you need to be precise and straight to the point hitting the main points and not beating about the bush with irrelevant points.

So let us take a look at some of the questions:

Question 1:

Describe your business

Here you have just 20 words to make your point. State clearly the kind of product your sell or the service you provide and to who. Be specific.

E.g: Kernel Laundry and dry Cleaning Services provides best-in-class laundry room operations using the latest technologies and cleaning products.

Question 2:

Select your industry

Here you just need to select the category that fits your business.

Marketing

Question 3:

What benefits of the product or service enables your business to stand out from your competitors?

Answering this question, you need to state in whatways your product or services are different from others. This could be in the form of packaging, imaging or the way your staff treat customers. What makes your product stand out?

For a Restaurant:

We ensure quality food at all times at affordable price
Our customers can order online while we deliver to their homes/offices and our website is very efficient.
Our staff serve our customers with high sense of duty and customer satisfaction is a top priority.
Question 4

Does this meet a particular need or demand (your competitive advantages, if any)?

Here you need to say the problem you are solving with your product or service. Why do people want to buy from you?

Since everyone is not your customer, you need to say who actually buys from you. What organizations and/or people within them are going to buy from you or would need your services?

You should include the size and purchasing power, ability to reach and serve them, whether large and profitable to serve, expected growth, their response to marketing, identify unmet customer needs, etc.

Sample Answer: For a Bakery

From our market analysis, we have identified these customers with high demand for our special bread: Hotels, Road side tea sellers (Mai shayis), fast food outlets. These customers need sugar free bread to serve over 15000 people in Lafia on special diet. We provide them the best at affordable price.

Please present facts and not just any numbers or stories. Do a thorough research.

Question 5

Name five of your existing or expected top customers, How will you attract these customers to your point of sale?

In answering the above question, you should know that you’re answering two questions in one.

You need to name real customers that will patronize you and say ways in which you are going to reach them. Here you either mention specific organizations or a customer group depending on the products or services you provide.

You need to understand your industry well because different industries have different ways to reach their customers.
