They say the weekend is for the movies. So, here are three fresh Nollywood films I recommend for the weekend. 1. The Accidental Spy: spy franchise are known to be funny, so, who better bring it to Nollywood than the King of comedy in Nigeria - Ay? Ramsey Nouh and Emma Oh My God join Ay on this funny action intelligence movie. Watch the trailer here - https://www.thatnollywoodblog.com/the-accidental-spy-ay-ramsey-noah/ 2. Glimpse: a movie by Biodun Stephen, it is available on Irokotv. This film will bring you to tears if you are the emotional type and will teach everyone an important lesson on perseverance. It stars Bisola (Big Brother 2017), Okey Uzoeshi and Toyin Afolayan. It is available for download on Irokotv. 3. Obsession: a nanny got obsessed with her madam husband who is her favourite actor and things got steamy when madam was out of the country for work. Trust me, the sex scenes here will impress you, a bit of skin was shown. Great great movie and there are plenty twist to look out for. Also available on Irokotv! Cc lalasticlala |

The ELFIKE Film Collective have released the official trailer for The Wedding Party Part 2. A teaser was released some weeks back but now we have the total package. The trailer features interesting scenes including the mistake proposal by Nonso (Enyinna Nwigwe) to Deardre (Daniella Down), the oyinbo bridesmaid, but who does that? There is also a MAMA G moment at the wedding. So, plenty to look forward to. You can watch the trailer to the highly anticipated Wedding Party Part 2 below. When The Wedding Party came out last December, everyone wanted to see it. The movie did so well at the Box Office, it became the highest grossing Nollywood movie. So, it is only normal that we get a sequel. HERE ARE A FEW THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE WEDDING PARTY PART 2 There will be another wedding! Surprise surprise! The team behind the production of the prequel, the ELFIKE gang, comprising EbonyLife Films, FilmOne Distribution, Inkblot Productions and Koga Studios are producing again. Kemi Adetiba has been replaced as director by Niyi Akinmolayan, who is known for The Arbitration and Falling. A large part of the movie was shot in locations in Dubai, hence, the title – The Wedding Party: Dubai Destination. Returning cast members of The Wedding Party Part 2 include RMD, Banky W, Adesua Etomi, Beverly Naya, Sola Sobowale, Alibaba, Enyinna Nwigwe, Iretiola Doyle, Daniella Down, and Ay. Catch.er is one of the movies I look forward to seeing this October. After the acclaimed success of Waltbanger’s 2015 Gbomo Gbomo Express, he established a claim to Nigeria’s finest in the crime genre. So, many, including me, were pumped to see Catch.er. I finally did, and I have mixed feeling about the movie. The idea was great; execution was nowhere near perfect. THE STORY The daughter of a wealthy man, Abby Bello (Beverly Naya), has just been murdered in her home. On the day of her murder, she caught her husband in bed with another lady. Detective Komolafe, a chain smoker, played by the charming OC Ukeje has the job of unraveling who her killer is. Abby’s husband and a colleague who has locked horns with her are the prime suspects, but the actual killer was a surprise. CATCH.ER: THE GOOD The movie had plenty flashbacks that explained the various events leading to the death of the deceased. All were perfectly executed. I like how they avoided the traps of using black and white pictures to depict past events. The idea is foreign to Nollywood but highly welcome. I am not sure I have watched a Nigerian movie that looked at crime from this angle. So, this was refreshing, and the shots were picture perfect. OC Ukeje nailed his role as detective Komolafe. He was intimidating, cocky, charismatic and his ability to swing mood to get the best (worst) out of the suspects was apt. Blossom Chukwujekwu (Brume) and Alexx Ekubo (Tony) played their role very well too. It was natural; you could tell these guys were under pressure and scared. The acting was top notch. CATCH.ER: THE BAD Catch.er dragged for too long. At some point, I got bored, and you might also if you have zeroed your mind on being entertained or intrigued. Few minutes you are excited and the next you are bored, or you start to follow, and you get lost. Wofaifada was there to help you laugh, but that did not help. Some scenes were also useless to the story. The scene (Spoiler alert) where Tope Tedela character goes to the hotel to hook up with the girl that Abby caught sleeping with her husband did not have any relevance to the story. Suspense was the one thing Catch.er was supposed to nail but it fell short in this department. The buildup to catching the killer will not keep you on your toes, and in the end, you are like: oh, that is it? CONCLUSION Catch.er, for me, lived up to its hype. Although, I wished the makers had given us more and that I did not get lost at a point. The acting was great; it was the movie’s saving grace. I love the soundtrack too; each time music came up, it was perfect for the scene. I think it is the type of movie that film geeks – critics, movie makers and actors – will enjoy but an average person who watches movies for entertainment will find it hard to watch and boring. It is available in Genesis Cinema nationwide.

When you see the Amina trailer, one word comes to your mind – Epic! Then you ask, is this a Nigerian movie? The cinematography is super impressive, and all credits go to Peter Keil, a creative DoP with over ten years’ experience. It is a story of the legendary Queen of Zazzau (modern-day Zaria) – Amina, played by Lucy Ameh. Different historians have different records of her legend, but it is accepted that she was a “fierce warrior and loved fighting.” Amina cast includes Ali Nuhu, Clarion Chukwura, Yakubu Mohammed. Production credits go to Okey Ogunjiofor. African Movie Academy Award (AMAA) winning director, Izu Ojukwu, is responsible for the directing. If the movie is as intriguing as the trailer, he would be up for another AMAA. In the Amina trailer, Queen Amina was portrayed as fearless, not one to be intimidated by males even at a time when the world was men’s. Official synopsis below She lived in the age of man in a man’s world. In an ancient World of brutal conflicts, ferocious animal passions, timeless suppressive customs, and reckless, heroic exploits, she must resolutely carve out a part of her life in the face of scandalized tradition and antagonistic male dominance. While I think the story is excellent, it is not the climax of the Amina trailer. You know what is? The bloody fight scenes! The part where blood spills, the African wrestling match (reminds of Gentle “Vuga” Jack) and the Troy or Game of Thrones type of war scenes involving running horses, arrows and cutlasses. If there was ever a Nigerian movie that mirrors the much loved (by females) hashtag on Twitter – #MenAreScum, it is Omoye. It is an intriguing story written by Uche Chukwu and one that I cannot wait to see as it explores a social issue common in Nigeria – Domestic Violence in a very captivating way. Omoye paints a perfect picture of what an abusive marriage or relationship is. Femi, played by Salami Rotimi, violates his wife physically, mentally and sexually yet, she will not give up on the marriage! He even thinks slapping her is for her good, as it will reset her brain. The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team endorsed the movie, guess we can take it as awareness for domestic violence. I do like how Nollywood is exploring social issues lately. Alter Ego discusses rape and child abuse, The Tribunal explores Albino discrimination, and Omoye focuses on violence in marriage. A movement away from the comedy trend is always welcome. Omoye Official Synopsis A hardworking and relentless young lady unknowingly gets into a toxic relationship with a man that never takes responsibility for anything, with abuse and violence increasing, she becomes emotionally and mentally drained but still won’t give up on her marriage.Watch the trailer and read full cast details here: http://www.thatnollywoodblog.com/rotimi-salami-abusive-omoye-trailer/

About a week or so ago, a friend brought to my attention a so-called legal thriller – The Tribunal (watch trailer), produced by Kunle Afolayan and starring such Nollywood heavyweights such as Omotola Jalade and Funsho Adeolu. With cast and crew of such pedigree, I had hoped to see something great and mindblowing. In my mind I expected a new standard set for legal thrillers in Nollywood, maybe our alpha version of My Cousin Vinny. I had high hopes that maybe we would have a movie that finally gets to navigate the interesting mazes of litigation in Nigeria accurately. Well, here goes my review of The Tribunal. After having to hunt down and see it in one of the few remaining cinemas in Lagos still putting it up on their showtimes, I think my expectations may have been a tad too high. To the movie itself, a quick summary goes thus. An albino banker lost his job and employed an old, washed up a lawyer to help him legally pursue discrimination grievances against his former employer. Funsho Adeolu played Jimi, a once-successful litigator, who for a series of (not well explained) unfortunate circumstances had his fortunes turned upside down and was fully transitioned into what we call “Charge and Bail” Law practice. We have Damilola Ogunsi, a whinny, annoying albino character who is not very much likable, losing his job for being despised and discriminated upon. Omotola Jalade plays a cheerless bank executive with the constant facial expressions similar to a person with bowel stress. Ade Laoye played a convincing role of a bright-eyed, bushy-tailed Law School graduate with all the hopes in the world of using the tools of legal badassery to make good prevail over evil. I write this review of The Tribunal as a lawyer, so let’s look at the movie’s performance on that front. I think it was average. It depicted the life of a charge and bail lawyer. Growing up in the training of the profession, a lawyer is made to understand that Charge and bail is one of the most undignified things a legal practitioner would be involved in. It is very much frowned at, and one is seen as completely irresponsible and mediocre to choose that as his area of law practice. Those scenes that portrayed it were quite stark. I cringed and shifted uncomfortably in my seat while saying a silent prayer forbidding such a fate for my hopeful self. Well done, they did well in that front. However, I almost could not get over the fact that the judicial setting used was a Tribunal and not a full-blown courtroom as provided in our nation’s laws. Every lawyer knows that the right forum to bring employment and trade matter is exclusively the National Industrial Court (NIC), not the so and so employment Tribunal where the legal battles in this movie took place. On this, I merely went ahead and assumed that the NIC had not been established during the period the film was set. Worked for me. Ever longed for martial arts in Nollywood? If yes, then 20 Pound Dreams starring Gideon Okeke is for you. Now, I do not know if this will turn out to be a joke (I hope not) or if it will mark the start of something epic in the Nigerian Film Industry. We need some movement away from this comedy trend. Like Omotola Jalade put it – “Nigerians are bigger than comedy movies.” So, I am excited about this one. The 20 Pound Dreams movie is directed by Andy Amadi-Okoroafor. It is being shot at locations in Hong Kong (seems they are serious) and Enugu, Nigeria. The 20 Pounds Dreams Movie, according to the Gbomo Gbomo actor, has been in the Kitchen for 3 years. It is the second film in which director Andy Amadi-Okoroafor will be working with the actor. Relentless was the first. I asked myself the same question |
The only Nigerian movie – The Royal Hibiscus Hotel – scheduled to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) was finally screened over the weekend at Toronto, and the team behind the film ensured it was a success. The Royal Hibiscus Hotel is a movie by Mo Abudu’s EbonyLife Films and is directed by Ishaya Bako. They entered in style, trended on social media and represented the culture. An after party featuring a special performance from Nigerian music act – Nonso Amadi was held at the Only One Gallery, 5 Brock Ave, Toronto. Courtesy of Johnnie Walker Ng. The special guests of honor were Mr. Foli Coker (DG – Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation) and his wife – Mrs. Aisha Foli Coker. The movie has three premiere dates, the 9th, 11th and 17th of September. There is still no news on when it will premiere in Nigeria. I am thinking December, alongside the sequel of The Wedding Party. The Royal Hibiscus Hotel (TRHH) is a romantic comedy starring Kenneth Okolie, Zainab Balogun, OC Ukeje and Toni Tones. It also features Nollywood veterans like Olu Jacob, Joke Sylvia, and Jide Kosoko. You can watch the trailer and get full cast details here.
