Science/TechnologyScientists Discover 2,500-yr-old Mummy In Egyptian Coffin by Okwyla(op): 11:08am On Mar 27, 2018
Scientists in Australia have discovered the remains of a mummy in an elegantly carved 2,500-year-old coffin.
Previously it had been classified as empty and never studied.

Sydney University’s Nicholson Museum had been holding on to four ancient and intricately designed Egyptian coffins, three of them with full-bodied mummies, for more than 150 years.

In 2017, when researchers opened the lid of the fourth one, they were hoping to find a few residual bandages and bones.

“The records previously said the coffin was empty or with debris… There is a lot more to it than previously thought,” said Jamie Fraser, the lead investigator and senior curator at the museum.

The mummy, which is “badly torn apart,” has only about 10 per cent of the body remains in the coffin.

The coffin belonged to Mer-Neith-it-es, according to hieroglyphs on the lid name.

She was a noblewoman who served the Mistress of the Temple of Sekhmet.

The sarcophagus dates back to the 26th Dynasty, circa 664-525 BC.

The coffin was acquired in the 1860s in Egypt by Charles Nicholson, a former chancellor of Sydney University.

It had been since been housed at the university’s museum bearing his name.

It was overshadowed by three other vibrant coffins with full mummies, Fraser told dpa.

Fraser said that after the initial study, it is likely the remains are of a single human, an adult probably
around the age of 30, but not certain whether male or female.

The coffin and its contents have already been laser-scanned to create 3D modelling, and then sent for a detailed Computed tomography scans, which were finished on Friday.

EducationWhy We Supported Arrest, Prosecution Of Our Students – Nigerian University by Okwyla(op): 10:06pm On Mar 26, 2018
Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has provided reasons for allowing the police to drag five of its students to court.

The university accused the students of assaulting and holding hostage one of its officials assigned to enforce an order evicting them from the hostels.

The five students, Gbenga Olaniran, Oyedeji Samson, Olajide Adedamola, Jimoh Oladipupo and Adeniji John, were on Thursday arraigned at the Ife Magistrate Court a day after their arrest.

Akelicious reported how the students, civil groups and staff of the university condemned the school’s management for handing over its own students to the police for prosecution.

In a statement it issued on Monday through its spokesperson, Abiodun Olarewaju, the university authorities debunked the claim that the students were arrested and arraigned for protesting an alleged illegal eviction of students from their hostels.

The statement said‎ the university would not condone the staff and students breaching the laws of the land and the university’s motto of “For Learning and Culture.”

It said the management had given a directive that all students resident on campus should vacate halls of residence to enable renovation works and repairs to be carried out before the commencement of the next academic session.

It further said allocation of bed spaces in the hostels is always for one academic session, and students are expected to vacate the hostels at the end of each session.

“We are aware that some students would be on SIWES, IT, Teaching Practice and other compulsory academic programs during the period, the university had designated two hostels on the campus, one each for male and female students, for the accommodation of these groups of students”, the statement by the spokesperson read.

The spokesperson said some students refused to vacate the hostels in spite of several notices to them and contrary to the directive of the university.

“On Wednesday, March 21, 2018, the Hall Warden and Porters at Moremi Hall (a Female Hostel) moved round the hostel and reminded students unlawfully occupying the hostel to move out.

“The students were complying when all of a sudden, some men came out of nowhere and forcefully moved the belongings of the female students back into the hostel on the ground that the university had no right to ask them to pack out,” the statement read.

It further alleged that the students were extremely rude to a hall warden, harassed and physically assaulted the hall staff and also held them hostage.

According to the statement, “the men who assaulted the university staff were reported to the police and upon investigation, (the police) decided that they had a case to answer and consequently filed charges against them in the law court.

“It subsequently turned out that these men are students of the university who are not on any academic program and do not belong to the group exempted and accommodated in Akintola and ETF Halls as earlier pointed out, contrary to the rumours making the rounds, the students charged to court were not charged for protesting or for dissent,” the university said.

According to Mr. Olarewaju, the university as one of the leading academic institutions in Nigeria, respects dissent and would not punish any member for expressing their opinions.

The university enjoined parents and guardians to impress it on their wards to respect the laws of Nigeria and the rules and regulations of the university.

Meanwhile Dunsi Samuel, the acting co-ordinator, Education Rights Campaign, OAU chapter, said none of the wardens was harassed or assaulted, faulting the management’s statement as false.

“There was nothing like protest on that day. But in the early hours of today during the mass awareness, the NASU and SSANU confirmed to us that the hall warden which the authority claimed was assaulted said nothing of such happened, she even said that was not what she wrote in her statement,” he said.

According to Mr. Samuel, “everything transpired in an open space, I was there and no one was held hostage.”

Akelicious learnt that the students are yet to be released.

The bail terms for each of the students include N500, 000 bond and provision of two sureties, who must be civil servants of level 11 and above and who are tax payers.

PoliticsDanjuma’s Comment: All Security Operatives In Nigeria Are Fulani Herdsmen – PFN by Okwyla(op): 5:14pm On Mar 26, 2018
The National Publicity Secretary of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Bishop (Dr) Emma Gospel Isong has backed the advice by a former Minister of Defence, Lt. Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (rtd.) that Nigerians should defend themselves against killers.

Dr Isong in an seven-point to back the former Minister of Defence said Nnamdi Kanu of IPOB made a similar statement in 2014 and asked, “Is T. Y Danjuma now justified.

“During one of the Jos killing by Fulani herdsmen, an eyewitness said in the camp that it was the military men that came and gave information and they were attacked and killed.
“The girls in Dapchi that were kidnapped, one of them by name Leah was forced to renounce Christianity which she refused, that incident, does it now justify Danjuma?.
“On the day Dapchi girls were kidnapped, two weeks before then, Army men withdrew from the check points, giving access to these kidnappers/militants. Is Danjuma not justified?
“The military and the police refused to protect citizens of Benue and Taraba given a free for all affairs for Fulani herdsmen to continue the expansionary move on the life and property of Nigerians in the riverine areas especially in the north. Is Dnajuna wrong?.

Dr Isong further said, “The President told the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to relocate to Benue, he refused, the President himself did not know if the IG relocated, he didn’t know that IGP disobeyed him. Up till today, the IGP has not been removed or punished or sanctioned or quarried, does that still make T. Y. Danjuma wrong?.
The PFN National Publicity Secretary lamented that all security operatives in the country are Fulani except Nigeria Navy.
Hear him, “All Security operatives in Nigeria are Fulani people except the Nigeria Navy, the Air force is Fulani, the Police is Fulani, the Custom is Fulani, the DSS is Fulani, 90% of the security operatives in Nigeria are Fulani men and happened in the period Fulani herdsmen are attacking Nigeria. Is Danjuma still wrong.
“The way forward is to pray for 2019 to come very quickly and for all Nigerians to dust their voters card and vote wisely”, he advised.

Foreign AffairsFacebook Faces 'oppenheimer Moment' Over Trump Scandal by Okwyla(op): 12:47pm On Mar 24, 2018
Facebook and psychologists who have worked with it are grappling with their “Oppenheimer moment”, experts say, over revelations that its data may have been used to help elect US President Donald Trump.

The scandal over the way Cambridge Analytica obtained personal information to try to manipulate US voters “is the most important moment that Facebook has faced since it went public (in 2012),” according to Professor Andrew Przybylski of Oxford University, one of the world’s leading authorities on social media psychology.

He compared their reluctance to admit the destructive potential of social media to the epiphany of the father of the atomic bomb, Robert Oppenheimer, who declared, “Now I have become Death, the destroyer of worlds.”

“With Facebook, we have to acknowledge we are giving Frodo the Ring,” Przybylski told AFP, referring to the object in the Lord of the Rings which confers absolute power.

“If you gave me the Ring I would be corrupted.

“It is not that what is happening at Facebook is by its nature bad,” he added. “It is that they are using our data for products and services, but that we have no idea what they are up to.”

He called for regulation and a new “ethical framework (to ensure) that users’ rights are protected and that research is being done transparently and in the public interest.”

Przybylski said similar crises had led to the establishment of ethical standards in other areas.
– ‘Facebook sense threat’ –

“Chemistry had this moment after they invented dynamite and chemical weapons, physics had this with nuclear weapons,” he argued.

Facebook and “others have been built on the shoulders of academic research… The key issue is trust. Facebook works one-on-one with psychologists and researchers and there is a fundamental asymmetry there.”

Przybylski, who has spent the last two days at Facebook’s San Francisco headquarters, said he told founder Mark Zuckerberg’s chief of staff “Chris Cox all this to his face”, and set out proposals on how Facebook might change the way it works.

“I am optimistic. They are receptive, they have a sense of the threat and they have a proactive mindset,” said Przybylski, who no longer uses Facebook himself.

But Google researcher Francois Chollet has his doubts.

In a series of scathing tweets this week the inventor of the Keras open source library said “the problem with Facebook is not ‘just’ the loss of your privacy and the fact that it can be used as a totalitarian panopticon,” a prison in which all the cells can be observed from one point.

“The more worrying issue is its use of digital information consumption as a psychological control vector.”

Other experts were sceptical that fears about personal information being used to influence users would lead to an exodus from the world’s biggest social network.

But with hashtags like #DeleteFacebook and #ZuckSucks trending even on Facebook itself, they said it had suffered a major blow beyond the billions wiped off its share price.
– Addicted to the ‘F’ key –

French sociologist Nathalie Nadaud-Albertini said that with Cambridge Analytica a line had been crossed even if “people are almost inured to their data being used for commercial gain.

“That information is being used in political campaigns is far more unsettling,” she said.

“Yet whether we like it or not, we are almost obliged to have social media accounts,” she said.

Nor can addiction be underplayed, insisted Professor Eric Baumer, of Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, whose 2015 study for Cornell University showed how many Facebook users wanting to quit still found themselves reaching for the “F” key when started their computers.

Those who did leave were often tempted back, he said.

“A lot people are going to make a big fuss about quitting now… Then you’ll see a negative backlash when their friends say, ‘How am I to get in touch with you?'” he said.

No other social media “has the same critical mass. However, that could change” and there were strong signs it was already changing with younger users.

The most consistent users are now aged between 40 and 60, Baumer said, while “younger users are likely to have an account that is deactivated or to have at least thought of deactivating it.

He was now studying a growing “latent resistance” to Facebook, which may end up with a “more thoughtful engagement with a panoply of different types of social media.

“The other problem is the opacity of social media conglomerates,” Baumer argued. “People say I don’t like Facebook so I use Instagram… not realising Facebook also owns it.”

PoliticsEFCC Can’t Declare Anyone Wanted Without Court’s Permission: Judge by Okwyla(op): 3:36pm On Mar 22, 2018
A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has held that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) lacks the powers to declare anyone wanted without first obtaining a court order.

Justice Othman Musa said in a judgment on Thursday that the EFCC could declare wanted anyone who failed to honour its invitation but the power could only be exercised after it has obtained a court order to that effect.

Justice Musa’s judgment was on a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by the Chief Executive Officer of AITEO Group, Benedict Peters.

In the suit marked: FCT/HC/CV/23/2017, Peter accused EFCC of declaring him wanted on its web site without due process.

The suit had EFCC and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) as respondents.

He said the decision of the EFCC to declare him wanted without a pending charge or a valid court order to that effect was a violation of his fundamental rights.

The EFCC said Peters was being investigated over his alleged involvement in the 2015 election bribery.

PoliticsUNILAG Students Donate Blood To Sickle Cell Child Patients by Okwyla(op): 3:49pm On Mar 19, 2018
No fewer than 360 students of the University of Lagos ( UNILAG ) turned out on Wednesday to donate a pint of blood each to sickle cell and cancer child patients.

The donors trooped out in multitudes to donate their blood at the New Hall and Bookshop areas of the Akoka campus where makeshift blood transfusion centres were provided.

The blood donation exercise was spearheaded by Project Smile, a non-governmental organisation, in partnership with the Lagos University Teaching Hospital and the Association of Medical Students, UNILAG (AMSUL).

According to the organizers, the joint-project tagged Save 500 Lives is aimed at raising at least 500 pints of blood for sickle cell and cancer child patients in LUTH.

Although, they did not reach this target on Wednesday, the organizers have said that they intend to conduct a supplementary exercise to meet their target.
The organizers explained that the donation exercise was due to the insufficiency of blood reserves in the Hospital’s blood banks.

This issue, however, is not just a reality in LUTH, but it stretches even beyond many hospitals countrywide.

Nigeria’s former minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu, in 2013, said that less than 10 percent of Nigerians voluntarily donate blood.

He noted that while 60 percent of the country’s blood donations came from commercial donors, the remaining 30 percent were from family members.

Meanwhile, the Chief Donor Officer, Haematology Department, LUTH, Mrs Mercy Onofomi, acknowledged that the hospital was currently struggling with low blood supply to its reserves.

Onofomi blamed the blood bank supply shortages on lack of voluntary blood donation by Nigerians. She said, “In LUTH, we use up to 50 pints (of blood), and you can imagine how many days these 500 (blood pints) will last.

“And our blood [bank at LUTH] is not always enough because of the volume of blood we use. We use blood for cancer people, we use it for accidents, we use for obstetrics, that is pregnant women. We have people that live on blood.

“So, the volume of blood we use per day in LUTH is very high, and family cannot replace all.”

She, however, called for more voluntary participation by Nigerians in blood donation exercises.

“You can imagine where one person uses 15 units of blood. How many will the relation replace?

“…How many can their relation donate that will be enough? That’s why we need this kind of voluntary blood donation to really augment the one family replacements donate.

”And in a normal practice, it is not supposed to be family replacement; it is supposed to be voluntary blood donation that they use. So, that’s why this blood [donation exercise] is very important. “

Speaking during the exercise, one of the co-founders of Project Smile and creator of the Save 500 Lives initiative, Oyinda Olayinka, explained the initiative was inspired from an encounter with the sickle cell and cancer child patients at LUTH.

According to the 300 level Medical student, “It started with a Christmas party we had for children with sickle and cancer last year. After the party, we started hearing requests that these children actually need blood.

“So, we thought about what could we do for them? And we came up with this idea: We get people to donate blood, and we give it to them for free.”

“We plan to get 500 pints of blood for 500 people. So, basically, we are saving 500 lives; a pint for a child with sickle cell (or) cancer,” Oyinda Ige, a co-founder and Medical student, added.

Also, AMSUL’s President, Chukwuemeka Agbarakwe, said that the initiative would be organized for the second time within the next one year.

“Considering the passion and the vision that both the organizers and all other stakeholders have kept, it’s an initiative that will continue.

“It wouldn’t even wait till one year to replicate itself,” the 600 Level Medical Student said.

Some of the donors (including first time donors) shared their views about the initiative and the donation exercise.

HealthExcessive Intake Of Local Herbs Causes Kidney Damage-expert by Okwyla(op): 11:49am On Mar 19, 2018
A medical expert, Dr Stephen Aderemi of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), has warned people against excessive consumption of locally prepared herbs to avoid causing serious damage to their health.

Aderemi gave the warning Monday during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin on Monday.

Herbs are plants with savoury or aromatic properties used for flavouring food, in medicine, or as fragrances.

Aderemi explained that not all the plants reported to be useful were harmless.

According to him, if plants are taken without adequate knowledge, they can cause kidney and liver dysfunction and death in some cases.

He said that many of the available herbal products being marketed in the country had no clear statement of content, adding that there was no information to show that they were certified by a recognised medical body.

“Herbal medicines contain toxicity and the risk that comes with it outweighs its benefits. That is why Nigerians need to refrain from its consumption, in order to prevent health mishaps.

“I pity some patients who go after traditional medicines for their ailments without knowing that they are risking their lives.
‘’Some of the herbs are harmful to the extent of damaging kidney and even resulting to death.

”Some of the so-called traditional medicines sold in Nigerian have no clear statement of content or certified by any recognised medical body, yet, Nigerian patronise them,” he said.

Aderemi expressed concern at the rate some Nigerians patronised herbal medicines because according to him, such medicines worked faster and cheaper than the conventional medicines.

The doctor, who is also expressed worry about proliferation of herbal concoction, said many of the people who engaged in the business did so without any formal training.

“Most of the local herbs are deadly that should be avoided, because many of the sellers go into the business without training, but to flee from the grips of unemployment to make ends meet.”

He cautioned patients who found solace in local herbs to be health conscious and stop the intake of such products because such herbs had not been subjected to laboratory analysis.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) said it would not relent in its quest to get the nation’s four refineries back to their optimal, nameplate capacities. Group managing director of the corporation, Dr. Maikanti Baru , disclosed this shortly after receiving this year’s Man of the Year Award from Nigerian NewsDirect, a Lagos-based daily publication, in Lagos, at the weekend. Baru said as part of the ongoing reforms in the NNPC, the corporation had been holding far-reaching discussions with some consortia to get the best funding options towards the refineries’ overhaul. He added that the corporation, under his watch, had recorded remarkable progress in resuscitating some of the nation’s critical downstream infrastructure, a development which had ensured seamless supply of products nationwide, until the recent past hiccups which is now under control. “Since coming on board, we have made the revamp of our abandoned assets and critical downstream infrastructure a key component of our corporate vision of 12 Business Focus Areas (BUFA),” he stated. Baru said over the last few months, several crude oil, petroleum products and natural gas pipelines were resuscitated while more than half of the nation’s 21 strategic depots were also upgraded. He decried acts of pipeline vandalism, crude oil theft and sabotage which he noted had resulted in huge loss of revenue, lives and property as well as damage to the environment. The GMD called on the security agencies and other stakeholders nationwide to collaborate with the corporation in its on-going campaign against act of sabotage on the nation’s oil and gas facilities. While attributing the recent fuel challenges faced in parts of the country to the nefarious acts of hoarders, diverters, profiteers and smugglers, Baru stressed that the corporation was working with relevant stakeholders to ensure the sufficiency currently witnessed nationwide was sustained. Baru thanked the editorial board of Nigerian NewsDirect for conferring on him their Man of the Year Award, saying that the recognition would spur him to rededicate himself to continue to give his best to the oil and gas industry and by extension the country. He commended the interest shown by the Nigerian media towards the critical sectors of the national economy, a development which he said, had portrayed fourth estate of the realm as partners in progress in the Nigerian project. Earlier in his address, chairman of editorial board of Nigerian NewsDirect, Prince Aderemi Adekile, described Baru as a patriotic Nigerian with indelible imprints as a frontline engineer, a worthy patriot and one of the best administrators the oil and gas sector has ever produced. “Today, we are recognising him for his transparency, unrelenting effort at ensuring stability of products supply, revamping downstream infrastructure, opening up of inland basins, growing crude oil reserves, increasing oil production as well as maintaining strategic communications amongst stakeholders in the Nigerian oil and gas industry,” Adekile added. Nigerian NewsDirect publisher, Prince Samuel Ibiyemi, said the publication decided to celebrate Baru as one of Nigeria’s best given the lasting impressions he was making on the nation’s oil and gas industry.

PoliticsRex Tillerson Vows US ‘full Support’ For Nigeria In Jihadism Fight by Okwyla(op): 6:42pm On Mar 12, 2018
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Monday slammed last month’s mass abduction of schoolgirls in northern Nigeria and promised Washington’s “full support” in the country’s fight against Boko Haram jihadists.

“The recent kidnapping of 110 schoolgirls is heartbreaking,” Tillerson said on his arrival in the capital Abuja on the final leg of an African tour.

“Nigeria has the US in full support and we are actively working with our partners in what we can assist you in this fight.”

Tillerson, who was greeted by Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, is on the final part of his first tour of Africa since becoming secretary of state.

He arrived from Chad, where he also promised support for a state fighting jihadism. His tour, which began last Wednesday, has also included Ethiopia, Djibouti and Kenya.

Heavily armed Islamist militants abducted 110 girls from their school in Dapchi, in Yobe state, northeast Nigeria, on February 19.

Parallels were immediately drawn to the abduction of more than 200 schoolgirls in Chibok in 2014, which captured world attention and contributed to the ouster of Buhari’s predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan.

Tillerson had initially been scheduled to stay in Abuja overnight, hold further meetings on Tuesday with US embassy staff and then fly back to Washington.

But the schedule was shortened because of work and Tillerson will leave after a few hours, aides said.

BusinessNSE Calls For Gender Equality, Women’s Empowerment by Okwyla(op): 3:57am On Mar 09, 2018
In celebrating this year International Women’s day, the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) has called for gender equality and women empowerment. Speaking at the fourth edition of NSE International Women’s day symposium themed “Press For Progress, the chief executive officer of NSE, Oscar Onyema said that the theme of the symposium is not just another theme for another edition of the International women’s day, saying it is a call to action to spur women and men into taking bold steps towards closing the gender gap. Onyema said: “It is saddening to note that with over 100 years of devoting a day, to celebrating the achievements of women and discussing steps towards achieving gender parity and social justice for women, the World Economic Forum (WEF) in its 2017 Gender Gap report averred that our dream of achieving parity across gender required more than 200 years to become a reality.” He added that “as one of Africa’s foremost securities exchanges and member of the Sustainable Stock Exchanges Initiative (SSEI), we are deeply committed to leveraging our position to accelerate the achievement of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number five which seeks to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls by 2030.” According to Onyema, the Exchange took steps to address the lack of female representation on our National Council by electing three eminent female members at the last AGM. Today, we have 23 per cent female representation as against zero per cent representation in 2016. “Last year, we initiated the NSE GEM (Gender Empowerment Men), a group of male employees at the NSE who act as mentors to young female employees, helping them to navigate the workplace and grow their career. “Under the four pillars of our CSR program namely: Workplace, Marketplace, Community and Environment, we continue to seek ways to celebrate women and play our part in closing the gender gap.”

PoliticsEx-jonathan’s Aide Urges NASS To Revisit Peace Corps Bill by Okwyla(op): 2:52am On Mar 09, 2018
Following President Muhammadu Buhari’s rejection of proposed Peace Corp of Nigeria Establishment Bill, former President Goodluck Jonathan’s aide, Comrade Jude Imagwe, has urged the National Assembly to revisit the bill saying it is capable of employing thousands of Nigerians. He said the rejection of the bill was an opportunity missed and insensitivity on the part of the Buhari administration to create jobs for thousands of frustrated youths in the country. The former special adviser to Jonathan on Youth and Students Affair maintained that reasons advanced by the president are not tenable especially in the face of the hardship inflicted on Nigerians by the lack of policy direction to address the challenges in the land. He said part of the APC campaign promise prior to the 2015 elections was to create millions of jobs for Nigerian youths and noted that the President’s rejection was not only insensitive on the part of government but inhuman and stressed that it is now left for senate to use its veto power to pass the bill.

PoliticsNo Automatic Tickets For You In APGA, Obiano Tells Anambra Lawmakers by Okwyla(op): 4:46am On Mar 06, 2018
Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, has told members of the state House of Assembly on the platform of All Progressives Grand Alliance(APGA) to brace up to face the delegates of the party in a primary election as the party would not hand them automatic tickets.

The call was made as a result of recent rumours that the governor has promised all the lawmakers in the party automatic ticket as compensation for their efforts to ensure his reelection in November last year.

Obiano, who spoke through his Senior Special Assistant on Social Media, Mr. Ifeanyi Aniagoh, said the governor, who he described as a democrat, would not condescend to hand picking candidates for APGA.

In a statement, Aniagoh said the governor never made such remarks, urging lawmakers in the state who wished to recontest for their position to be ready for face the delegates of the party.

Part of the statement read: “The publication that the governor has promised return tickets for members of state House of Assembly in appreciation of their support for his reelection is a fake, malicious and false propaganda aimed at confusing the unsuspecting public.

“It is on record that Obiano is a highly democratic leader whose love for due process has made Anambra one of the most transparent states in Nigeria.

“Under his present leadership as the National Leader and Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT) of the party, APGA has strengthened to the extent of winning elections in Bayelsa, Abia, Imo and Taraba States as well as clinching a chairmanship seat within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“To maintain this rapid development, all assembly members wishing to go for another term and other aspirants shall present themselves for primary election by the people in accordance with the provisions of APGA constitution.”

He urged the public to disregard such publication and its propagators, as APGA was not ready to indulge in such dictatorship that has been the bane of other political parties in the country.

PoliticsKebbi Now Self-sufficient In Rice Production by Okwyla(op): 4:22am On Mar 06, 2018
The Kebbi State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Garba Muhammed Gandiga has disclosed that the State has attained self-sufficiency in the production of rice. The Commissioner made the disclosure yesterday when a team of journalists, who accompanied the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, visited Suru rice farm (one of the largest rice farms in the State). “I can say that we are now self-sufficiency in rice production. But we still aspire more because we want a situation, where Kebbi State can provide Nigeria 50% of its rice requirement,” he said. Gandiga said that 16 Local Governments are in massive rice production in the State, which is why Kebbi State has succeeded in achieving self-sufficiency in rice production, adding that the State is targeting about 2.5 million metric tons of rice this year as against 1 million tons produced in the previous year. He noted that the State always opts for production of paddy during the Dry season. Also, the Commissioner observed that Dry season is more favourable to rice farmers in Kebbi vis-à-vis rainy season, which paralyses farming activities as a result of heavy flooding in the State. “As I said, 16 Local Governments are in serious rice production, and this year, we want to record 2.5 million tons of rice. But more importantly, we produce more paddy during the Dry season than the Rainy season because if you come here during the Rainy season, it’s always flooded,” he added. The Commissioner also stated that the State government has procured about 300 tractors, 200 reapers, 100 trenchers with a view to ensuring mechanised farming and accelerate the growth of agricultural produce in the State.

Christianity EtcChristians Are Idol Worshipers By Femi Aribisala by Okwyla(op): 4:01pm On Mar 05, 2018
He highlights on worshipping God and how most Nigerian Christians worship money which he describes as idol. Atheism does not exist. Man is a worshiper. Everybody worships. The critical question is who or what we worship. I went to buy blank videotapes in a van emblazoned with Christian VideoNet on both sides. When I came out of the van, an Asiatic gentleman engaged me in friendly banter. He was clearly not a Christian, but I soon got the impression he was in the marketplace for a new religion. He did not wait for me to witness to him. Having seen the insignia on the van, he wanted me to tell him about Christianity. But then he had some vital questions he wanted cleared up right at the onset. Mr Ernest Okorie and others of St Dominic Church Young Christian Workers performed the Passion of Jesus as Christians all over the world mark Good Friday the day Jesus Christ was crucified yesterday. “Your religion,” he asked, “does it allow you to drink alcohol?” “Yes,” I replied expansively, “we even drink wine in church.” “Wonderful, wonderful,” said my new-found friend, brightening up. Then he asked: “How many gods do you have?” I was a bit slow on the uptake and did not quite understand what he was getting at. What do you mean how many gods do I have?” I asked incredulously. “Yes, yes,” the man replied, without any hint of mischief. “How many gods do you have?” “I have only one God,” I insisted marvelling at him. “Only one?” he asked in disbelief. “You have only one God?” “Well, yes,” I replied, now defensive. “I have only one God.” The man shook his head in a way that said eloquently: “Forget it.” I imagine him saying to himself: “What is the point of a religion where you only have one God? That is simply too risky. What if he happens to be busy at any given time?” On later reflection, I came to the conclusion that it was a god-sent question. Therefore, I pose the same question here: “How many gods do you have?” “Do you even know how many gods you worship?” Idol worship One of the most important subjects that Jesus addresses in the scriptures is idol worship. One of the Ten Commandments of God says: “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me.” (Exodus 20:2-3). Atheism does not exist. Man is a worshiper. Everybody worships. The critical question is who or what we worship. We either worship the one true God or we worship idol gods. Says John Calvin: “The heart of man is an idol factory.” Left to himself, without divine revelation, man will worship almost anything. We worship what we highly esteem. For this reason, Jesus says: “What is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.” (Luke 16:15). Jesus himself faced the challenge of idol worship at the very inception of his ministry: “The devil took him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, ‘All these things I will give you if you will fall down and worship me.’

Then Jesus said to him, ‘Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only you shall serve.’” (Matthew 4:8-10). Many people, including those who call themselves Christians, have accepted the devil’s offer. We worship the devil and his “things” instead of the one true God. Thus, Jesus counsels: “Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:20-21). It goes without saying that God is the only real treasure we have. Every other so-called treasure is ephemeral. God is: “the Desire of All Nations.” (Haggai 2:7). Accordingly, John warns all believers: “Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.” (1 John 2:15-16). Idols of the heart Jesus told a Samaritan woman: You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews.” (John 4:22). The same conundrum applies today. Many presume salvation is of the Italians or the Romans, but it is not. Salvation is of the Jews. For this reason, Roman Catholicism is full of idol worship. God says: “You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God.” (Exodus 20:4-5). But Roman Catholics have deliberately removed this injunction from their own non-scriptural version of the Ten Commandments, so that the people would be unaware that they are contradicting it. As a result, the making of idols is very big business in Rome, and the worship of idols is standard fare in Catholicism. However, the problem is not limited to Roman Catholics. It is a general predicament among all Christians. The problem with idol worship is that many who worship idols are unaware that they are worshiping idols. Many worship God while also worshiping idols. But when we worship God and other gods simultaneously, we become idol worshipers. Thus it is said of the people of Samaria: “They feared the LORD, yet served their own gods- according to the rituals of the nations from among whom they were carried away.” (2 Kings 17:33). Even more fundamental is the fact that many of the idols worshiped today are not physical idols: they are idols of the heart. God identifies this tendency to Ezekiel: “Son of man, these men have set up idols in their hearts and put wicked stumbling blocks before their faces.” (Ezekiel 14:3). These idols are strongholds set up in our hearts and minds that prevent us from growing in the knowledge of God, and from seeing the glory of God in our lives.

Thus, Paul says we should cast down: “imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bring into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” (2 Corinthians: 10:5). Worship of money One of the idol gods that Christians have been seduceed into worshiping is mammon; the god of money. Paradoxically, this worship even takes place during church services. Today, everything is upside down. People go to church to pray for money, to invest money and to learn about how to make money. God has become second-place; simply an instrument for the acquisition of money.

Mercenary pastors now claim the gospel gives us the power to get wealth. In his book, “The $elling of Je$u$,” Victor Bryditzki observes cryptically that: “Je$u$ is a multi-billion dollar industry, expanding into places where angels (and sober Christians) fear to tread.” But the word of Jesus remains sure, having this seal|: “No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.” (Luke 16:13). PoliticsThose Jubilating Over Dapchi Girls’ Abduction Is An Enemy Of Nigeria -presidency by Okwyla(op): 8:01am On Mar 04, 2018
The presidency has said the abduction of 110 girls from the Government Girls Science and Technical College, Dapchi, Yobe state should not be used to determine whether the country is more secure or safer than it has ever been, Femi Adesina, the special adviser on media and publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari, said it was a freak occurrence, adding that there are still remnants of insurgents who launch occasional attacks, and that is what happened in Dapchi. The presidential spokesman said Buhari has done well in terms of securing the country, though the job is not fully done. According to him, anyone rejoicing over the abduction of the Dapchi girls is an enemy of the nation. He said: “If anybody jubilates over that (schoolgirls abduction), that person is an enemy of humanity and he is also an enemy of Nigeria. If you jubilate over the abduction of schoolgirls, you hate humanity, you hate your country. To anybody that is jubilating over that, that is my message for him or her.”

On the issue of Buhari recontesting for a second tenure, Adesina said it is the personal decision of Mr. President and he has not made that decision but when he makes it, he will address Nigerians. He said the president has done enough on all grounds to seek re-election. The presidential spokesman said despite the latest corruption perception index (CPI) of Transparency International which showed that corruption is getting worse in Nigeria, Buhari is fighting corruption vigorously like it has never been fought in Nigeria. “The second promise he made was to fight corruption. If you are honest, despite even the recent report of Transparency International, you will know that at no time had corruption been fought vigorously like this in Nigeria. Do you know how many people are before our courts? Do you know how many people have decided to enter into plea bargain? The anti-corruption war is well and alive and we are making progress. "They say it is one-sided and I ask, ‘All the former military chiefs who are answering before the courts now, are they PDP members?’ That is one big question they have been unable to answer. The administration’s position is that anybody who runs foul of the law must face the consequence. And the anti-corruption war is well, alive and on course," he said.

According to Leadership, the chief of defence staff, Gen Abayomi Gabriel Olanisakin; chief of army staff, Lt-Gen Tukur Yusuf Burutai; chief of air staff, Air Marshal Sadiq Abubakar; and chief of naval staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ette Ibas along with the director general of the State Security Services, Lawan Daura, converged in Maiduguri, Borno state on Thursday, March 1.
