At Ola Daviva International, we are honored to be part of history by designing the customized Ankara fabrics used for the coronation titles and the burial of the Queen Mother. This is more than just fabric—it is a symbol of heritage, culture, and honor, woven with patterns that reflect the rich legacy of the Benin Kingdom. Being entrusted with this prestigious task makes us feel like we are doing super work for royalty, and we take immense pride in preserving history through textile art. In the Benin Kingdom, a profound chapter unfolded as the revered Queen Mother, Iyoba Omo N’ Ikuoyemwen, was finally laid to rest after nearly 50 years. According to tradition, the Crown Prince (Edaiken) must ascend the throne before performing his mother’s funeral rites. Thus, following his coronation in 2016, His Royal Majesty Oba Ewuare II embarked on this sacred journey. The funeral rites began on February 15, 2025, at Eguae Iyoba N’Uselu, featuring traditional ceremonies like Iwarinmwin and Isorhanfua.j The Ekasa mourning rites commenced on March 1, 2025, during which the wearing of coral beads was suspended as a sign of deep respect. These sacred performances, filled with ancestral dances and invocations, will continue until March 27, 2025, culminating in a grand finale at the Oba’s Palace. This historic moment not only bids farewell to the Queen Mother but also reinforces the rich traditions of the Benin Kingdom, ensuring that her legacy lives on.

He holds a degree from Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu-Ode, and later pursued a Master’s degree in Linguistics and African Literature Studies at the University of Ibadan. Before fully committing to the textile industry, Olayemi explored various career paths. He worked as an Executive Customer Representative at MTN Nigeria and also gained experience in journalism, contributing to notable media platforms such as Iroyin Owuro (a Yoruba weekly newspaper), Tiwantiwa TV, and Radio Diaspora. As a teenager, he frequently accompanied his mother to Gbagi Market, a major textile hub in Nigeria. His father was also a well-known fabric merchant and importer before his passing. A Trailblazer in the Textile Industry Upon his full return to the fabric business, Olayemi Olatilewa, popularly known as Ola Daviva, revolutionized the industry by helping over 50 entrepreneurs establish their Ankara fabric businesses, many of whom are now thriving independently. In February 2025, the Benin Kingdom observed the royal funeral rites for Iyoba Omo N’Ikuoyemwen, the beloved mother of His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, CFR, Oba of Benin. This long-awaited ceremony followed the Benin customs and traditions, which dictate that the funeral rites of a Queen Mother (Iyoba) can only be performed after her son, the Edaiken (Crown Prince), ascends the throne and formally confers the title of Iyoba upon her. Oba Ewuare II fulfilled this tradition by posthumously bestowing the Iyoba title on his late mother on November 21, 2021. The funeral rites officially began on February 15, 2025, marking the start of a grand, weeks-long ceremony that has drawn dignitaries, traditional chiefs, and thousands of Benin indigenes to the ancient kingdom. A major highlight of the ceremony is the Ekasa performance, a sacred royal dance traditionally performed to honor a deceased Iyoba. The Ekasa rites commenced on March 1, 2025, and will continue until March 27, 2025, culminating at the Oba’s Palace. This elaborate cultural display is an essential part of Benin’s heritage, symbolizing deep respect and a befitting farewell to the late Queen Mother. During the mourning period, the use of traditional coral beads has been temporarily suspended throughout the Benin Kingdom, reflecting the solemnity of the occasion and the high regard in which the late Iyoba was held. Notably, the customized Ankara fabrics worn during both the 2021 conferment and the 2025 funeral ceremonies were produced by Ola Daviva International. These fabrics, originally designed in 2021, have become a significant part of the commemoration, blending traditional elegance with modern craftsmanship, making the ceremonies even more memorable.

As I stepped into the abandoned textile factory, I was overwhelmed with a deep sense of loss. The once-powerful machines now stood lifeless, covered in rust and dust. It was heartbreaking to see a place that once symbolized Nigeria’s industrial strength now reduced to silence. Nigeria once had a thriving textile industry with several major companies, including: • Kaduna Textile Limited (KTL) – Kaduna • United Nigerian Textile Limited – Kano • Nigerian Textile Mills Limited – Lagos • Afprint Nigeria Plc – Lagos • Aswani Textile Mills – Isolo, Lagos • Aba Textile Mills – Aba, Abia State • Edo Textile Mills – Benin City These companies were once the pride of the nation, but due to economic challenges, smuggling, and poor government policies, they all shut down. Standing in that factory, I couldn’t help but wonder how different our economy would be today if these industries had survived.
