Following the adoption of the motion on “JAMB’s new admission policy” which was sponsored by Senator Joshua Lidani of Gombe South and seven others, the Nigerian senate has asked the senate committee on education to invite the leadership of Joint Admission And Matriculation Board to ascertain and look into the circumstances surrounding the new JAMB Admission Policy. The senate also told the committee to consult relevant stake holders like the Parents Teachers Association, Academic Staff Union of Universities in order to come up with a more acceptable admission policy. According to the sponsor of the motion, the new JAMB policy is contrary to the JAMB Act as stipulated in the constitution. Meanwhile, the senate has asked JAMB to consider increasing the validity of its results from one to three years to reduce the number of yearly applicants. For the JAMB 2016 REGISTRATION, The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board JAMB has said that it has made some modifications on the 2016/2017 registration as it concerns selection of institutions by candidates. According to the Public Relations Officer of the board, Dr Fabian Benjamin, the board has made provision for “preferred choice” to give candidates ample opportunity of gaining admission. In his words, “What we did initially was that you only have one choice. Now, we have made it in such a way that if you miss the University of Lagos; University of Nigeria, Nsukka; Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaira, you will have an opportunity of going to another school. Before, all universities will be in first and second choice and that will not solve any problem. We have now decided to put a few of those schools we feel will have more spaces as more preferred. Institutions placed on the more preferred choice are those that are mostly not oversubscribed. This is because it will not make any sense if you place institutions like the ABU, UNILAG, OAU and UNN, when in actual sense they cannot even admit one third of the candidates that will choose them as most preferred.” We therefore advise candidates to ensure they visit accredited registration centres for registration where they will be properly guided on this new option and ask questions if the need clarification. For the 2016 UTME registration, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Wednesday cautioned candidates against patronising unapproved centres while registering for the 2016 UTME registration all Computer Based Test (CBT) of the UTME. 2016 UTME registration A statement signed by JAMB’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, in Lagos, said that some candidates were patronising unapproved registration centres. It said that the candidates were being reminded that JAMB’s registration for the 2016 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) should be done only at the board’s approved centres. “The board hereby wants to state unequivocally that it will not be liable in the event of any irregularity, challenges or inaccessible data arising from the wrong registration. “JAMB, once again, urges candidates that their registration should be done at its approved centres, to avoid certain challenges such as no results and incomplete results. “The essence of registration at the approved centres for the candidates is to ensure complete results without any hitches. “Candidates are also to note that the registration will be ending in January 2016,” it said. According to the statement, JAMB has put all machinery in place to ensure that next year’s examination records an improvement over the 2015 exercise. “We are working round the clock to give the country an examination that is malpractice and stress-free; and guarantees the spirit of equality and fairness to all and sundry. “Be informed that this year’s registration has been done in a way that candidates will have additional provision for more preferred choices, in case they do not get admission in their most preferred choice. “Candidates are allowed to choose from a list of institutions with more spaces. “This method is to give candidates a second chance of being admitted, should they miss their most preferred choice. “The board is only trying to ensure that all available spaces are being utilised,” the statement said.
