NIGERIAN DEMOCRACY IS A SCAM BY: Olokooba Abdulwasiu As a system of government, 'Democracy' is viewed as a means of administration whereby the will of the people is always given priority to. It is a means of governance which the rules are ruling for the benefit of the ruled. Meanwhile, as a precedence, Abraham Lincoln opined that 'Democracy' is a government of the people by the people and for the people. By effect, it can be rightly concluded from the above discuss, more especially from that of Lincoln's defination, that a democratic governance is only meant to serve, rule and protect the best interests of the people. But, the reverse is the case. The Nigerian version of 'Democracy' is a scam. It is actually a deal which 'the guardian' are using to scam both the 'auxiliaries' and 'artisans' in Nigeria. It is an act of ruling which is making Nigerians, I mean the citizenry, wealthless and poorer everyday; whereas the leaders are swimming in opulence. Yes. Metaphorically, our democracy is like an adopted son whom we bequest all our estate to, at the prejudice of the living of our legitimate and biological children. I mean it is an alien system that we embraced dogmatically from a foreign land. The system is too foreign to us to reflect our ways of doing things. We should either abandoned it or restructure it to maintain the track record of our 'dos and don'ts'. Even indeed and in truth, everyone knows. This system is too cost for a rich but poor country like Nigeria. I am still wondering the benefits of having bicameralism when the both are like an act of tautology in grammer work. They are both serving same purposes. Well, you may say, it is a way of bringing government more closer to people or as an avenue where people will be well represented in the government. This is a fallacy. Instead of representing the wills of the people, it is a system where those who hold the levers of governance not only arrogate to themselves humongous salaries, allowances and severance packages, they also engage in serial looting of the public till. The Nigerian democracy is also a system that is absolutely being controlled by the corrupts and the indisciplines without giving regards to the rights and the life of the citizens. It is in our democracy that the human rights and the fundamental freedoms of the people are not under tutelage of the law. In fact, the law enforcements do see themselves as mould of forces of state against the people, not forces that protect the citizens against the abuse of their rights. As a patriotic Nigerian, I used to be with teary eyes, whenever I realise that it is only our political contests that are always being characterised by violence, thuggery, assassinations, election rigging and the exploitation of political office for primitive acquisition to the detriment of the people and the nation. And if democracy is all about the interest of the people in a state, I suggest that all these attitudes need to change. May Nigeria grow, but not with visionless leaders and citizens. God bless my father land.

ASUU denies reaching agreement with FG The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Wednesday debunked the latest claim by the Federal Government to have reached an agreement with the union over their lingering differences, saying the claim is not true. Tribue reports that ASUU’s president Prof Biodun Ogunyemi said the negotiations between both parties in still inconclusive as the team that represented ASUU at the meeting has no final say concerning the decision making as a body on matters of such magnitude. He explained that what they had on ground now is a proposal from the government which ASUU insisted must be written down showing her plans of action unlike all along since the commencement of the two-month-old strike that government always made verbal proposals. It will be recalled that their last meeting happened to be the seventh time they held meetings over their differences without tangible outcome from the previous meetings. Speaking further, Prof Ogunyemi said, “it was just yesterday (Tuesday) that government sent the proposal to us without waiting for feedback before going to the public that we have reached an agreement. ASUU does not operate in that manner.” “The ASUU team that met the Federal Government,” he noted, “would have to consult our principal over the proposal which we are already doing.” He disclosed that the said principal represents various organs of ASUU who will in turn pass any resolution at that level on to the National Executive Committee and then, final decision can be made. “So, ASUU cannot make pronouncement on a mere proposal. Until our principal agrees, there is no agreement. And that is what we have always emphasised to government that we are going to consult our members and if after consultation, our members think the proposal is good enough, we will get back to government and tell them that now, we have taken a decision which becomes an agreement. But so far on government proposal, we have not taken a decision. And our strike is still ongoing,” he said. But when asked if there were grey areas in the proposal that would need consultation, he said ASUU might not bother about further consultation on issues that are very clear. Giving examples, he said: “If you say you are going to set up a committee and you have set up that committee, that one is clear. And if you say you are going to pay certain money for certain purpose and you have paid, that will not also cause further argument. But where we said you should release certain amount of money in five tranches within certain period of time, and you are saying well, you have paid N20 billion, or you have paid N2 billion or N15. 4 billion, it means you haven’t started. “So, that is the level we are now. And we don’t have a final say on any proposal that is controversial. But for areas that are not controversial as I had mentioned, we will only need to confirm payment. If paid, fine. It then means that one is settled and we now move to another one that is yet to be settled. And the one that is not settled we will need to take feedback to our members and that is the position we are at the moment.” https://www.tribuneonlineng.com/182695/ |

I have not received any formal letter from Federal Government, conveying such information to us." He said. The Union leader also affirmed during the interview that the only thing he was notified of was on the propensity of having another meeting with the Federal Government to know the steps taken so far by the government concerning their demands. “The only information I got from the Minister of Labour this afternoon when we spoke was that they have done something concerning our demands; what they have done, I do not know." “The other thing he told me was that there is going to be a meeting between us (ASUU) and government on Monday." “It is only when we get to the meeting that we will be able to know what government has done and if it is okay by us, then we will convey same to our members who will now take the next line of action,” he said. _*FACT CHECK: Did Aisha Survive The Suicide Mission?*_ By: *Adeyemi Ibrahim and Turawa Bashir* "Few days after reactions followed Aisha's suicide action, it went viral on the social media that she survived the poisonous insecticide taken to commit suicide. The source of the rumour is traceable to the Facebook page post on Ahmadu Bello University, Samaru, Zaria. The post, which has more than a thousand shares and likes make many Nigerians to wonder whether the she has really survived her suicide mission. But then, the picture attached to the Facebook post, showing Aisha in the hospital receiving treatment is the first fact that falsifies the rumours. This is because, the said picture was posted on Twitter sometimes in October 2018, when Aisha was said to have had an accident. Meanwhile, the rumour was further falsified by eye-witnesses who witnessed how Aisha died and buried. Audu Abdulqudus, a recent graduate of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and close friend to Aisha affirmed that he was among many others who participated in burying her on the same day she committed suicide and died. "I was the main friend that carried her dead body the very day she died at the Jamaa hospital in Samaru. I and her best friend Father, Mr AbdulGaniu with two police men took her to the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital Mortuary. "I was called by Maryam Salami, Aisha's childhood friend on Thursday evening towards 4:00pm. So, it was Maryam that now told me about the mum telling her that they were at the mortuary and they wanted to go and burry her that very evening on Thursday. When contacted, Maryan Salami, a childhood friend to Aisha confirmed the death of her bosom friend, adding that the death Aisha died was mysterious. "We don't know what to say. That's how God planned her own death, let's just put it that way," she said. ...Read full details. http://udusnewsdigest..com/2019/01/exclusive-mystery-controversy-over-abu.html?m=1 |

*UDUS LAW STUDENTS HOLD FIRST EVER ONLINE MOOT TRIAL* In a bid to increase their knowledge in practice and procedures of law and also keeping them doing something productive while ASUU is still on strike, the 200level Law students of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto on Friday conducted the first ever online moot trial in the history of the school. The mooting which is civil in nature was conducted on the WhatsApp platform of the Ug2 law students of the school which lasted about two hours. Justice Ibrahim Manzuma Idris who is the Chief Judge of Udus LSS Judiciary presided over the trial. While giving his opening remarks, he was quoted to have said among other things that: "This is a thing of joy and happiness for me that this brilliant idea is initiated by 200level law students. I love seeing young people making a change in a different and new way. Therefore, I commend you for this brilliant idea. It is no longer a news that the world is going digital and as serious students with progressive minds, we must be ever ready to take advantage professionally of whatever opportunity the digital world present to us". He was equally quoted to have said that "Nigerian courts are now gradually embracing ICT. Court processes are now filed online and hearing notice are given via email. This is to tell us that we cannot shy away from ICT particularly online litigation. So, the earlier we embrace it, the better for us". Speaking with some of students that actively participated in the exercise, Olokooba Abdulwasiu, one of the counsels to the plaintiff in the case, indicated that the exercise is an avenue for him as a student of law to be more fortified and well trained for the challenges in the practice of law both in law school and in the real court of law. Similarly, Folohunsho Faozy, one of the counsels to the defendant, described the moot trial as a chance for him to learn the skills for advocacy and to master them before he will actually face the real judge. However, the case was adjourned till 16th December, 2018 for continuation of presentation of oral addresses from both parties after witnessing hot arguments from them on the first issue of determination in the case. The Prisoners' right to vote. By: Olokooba Omobolaji Abdulwasiu(olokson_the_eminent) Before he gave up to the ghost, Jose Marti, a communist, once said "The first duty of a man is to think for himself". Without missing words, honestly, if I say I had known the man's intent for this prophesy if not until now that I am writing this; I might turn to be an inmate. It is no more a news that Nigerians; we are almost near the cusp of authoring what may be the faith of this great land for some years to come. The time when every qualified adult citizens of this country will be allowed to choose, with their one finger respectively, the candidates they dislike least to eventually lead this country for certain fixed years. Against that background, we, Nigerians, are fond of weaving a fiction that lacks credibility that 'our votes is not matter in an election because it won't be counted'. What a cheapened ignorance of us! Indeed, if our votes is not matter in deciding the election, why will the cabal always campaigning their manifestoes vigorously to us? Or why will they be using millions of naira to buy votes even when knowing fully well that same are not matter in the leaders? Definitely, like all fakes, that fiction will soon fade in our midst. Metaphorically, Are we not callous fellows for contending weather it is ideal or not if our sisters and brothers in prisons are granted their birth rights to elect who will be their leaders in their own country? As a matter of law, it is no more a disputatious fact that the whole provisions of section 30 of Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria(CFRN), 2011 as amended, specifically inoculates and immunises any citizens by birth from its application. Hence, it can be authoritatively asserted that conviction does not take away one's citizenship. And once you are still a legal member of a country; you are entitled to elect the candidate of your choice during election. Similarly, I will vehemently commend the decision of the Court of Appeal sitting in Benin city, Edo state, for affirming the prisoner's right to vote in the election on Friday, 7th December, 2018. Doubtlessly, I humbly align myself to the opinion of President Aigbokhan of the Initiative for Rural Development, Information and Legal Advocacy (IRDILA) that prison inmates have their own communities and polling units should be allocated to there because they also have right to vote in an election to author the future of their country. This right is in line with provisions of both section 77(2) and 132(5) of CFRN, 2011as amended. Truly, if franchise is given to the prisoners, attention will be focused and shifted to their community which will utimately improve their situations and health conditions there. With statistics, the population of our inmates is almost million in numbers, this could be a measure of deciding in having a good or a bad leader in this country. As Shomope Abdulrasheed, a present 300level student of Common and Islamic Law Department, University of Ilorin, has aplty said "their numbers could sway the waves of polls and thereby participating in the dawning of new era'. Actually, I am still anxiously waiting for that day when these prisoners will be allowed to invest in the future of the country they are bound to rejoin back sooner or later. But before that time, GOD BLESS MY FATHER LAND. AMIN! 11/12/2018 ® Olokooba Omobolaji Abdulwasiu; He is a poet , an essayist, a satirist, a campus writer and a 200level Udus Law student.
