Buying a vehicle is a very important decision, several factors come into play when it comes the quality and the price of your vehicle. One of the factors that determine car price is the mileage. It is popular believe that a car with lower mileage is always better than that of a higher mileage hence the price of the lower mileage is always higher. To some extent this is true but not in all cases. A lower mileage car does not necessarily mean a better car. And here is my argument, you have an individual driving a car he bought brand new and drove it for 70,000 miles but never changed the brakes, shocks, suspension, filters etc. He uses the lowest grade petrol and does not necessarily change his oil on time. Compare that to a vehicle that has 120,000 miles on it, the brakes, shocks, suspension, filters etc were changed 10,000 miles ago. The previous owner changes the oil regularly and uses the highest quality petrol. Now in this case, the vehicles with 120,000 has better brakes, shocks and probably performs better. Now you can only take this argument to a certain extent, the wear and tear on a vehicle with 200,000 miles can not be compared to that with 70,000 miles. My point is that sometimes the mileage on a car is just numbers and cannot be used as the sole factor in determining how much you will pay for a car. To be fair, another aspect I need to address is the resale value whenever you intend to resell again. Obviously a lower mileage will be more attractive and will strongly determine how much you will end up getting for you vehicle. In conclusion, the mileage on a vehicle is an important indicator but not an accurate indicator of the quality and value of the vehicle. One more thing, if you plan on ordering a vehicle of substantial value, ensure to request for a carfax value. Common practice among some seller is to turn the mileage backwards, although this practice is illegal in the US, it hasn't stopped some dealers to turn the mileage back upon the arrival of the vehicle in Nigeria. Have a blessed and wonderful week. |
I have also read a lot of comment about the wait being to long, which is sometimes true. There are ways to eliminate and reduce the wait. There is at least a ship leaving every month from the US, in some cities twice a month. One reason for a long wait is if adequate money is not sent upfront. I have clients that will send their money and the car is on the way to the port the next day. Have your dealer find the vehicle and possible negotiate deal ahead of time. It might mean you pay a little more because the dealer is negotiating for the car and not letting the car go to auction. Buying the car from the auction is usually about 500 dollars cheaper in some cases and in other cases actually more expensive. If its an expensive car, I prefer going to the dealer or seller to negotiate the deal. This gives me enough time to properly inspect the car and buys me time. Also when you walk to a dealer or a seller with cash, you can save as much as buying the car from an auction(clean auction). In a case where the deal has been negotiated ahead of time, there is nothing stopping your agent from purchasing the car the next day you make your deposit and have the vehicle at the port the following day. Now this is where the fault of the buyer comes in, sometimes buyers are looking for ridiculous deals that are not necessarily impossible to find but they are hard to find. Finding deals like that sometimes require patience which buyers fail to understand, buyers often start counting right from the day they make payments. |
The best advised I have heard is from Fhemmy, a lot of people commenting and are only focusing on one side of the argument. As a car dealer here on nairaland and based in the US, it is tempting for me to quickly advise you to order from the US. But in the spirit of promoting nairaland as a forum to receive untainted information, here is my take on your question. It all boils down to same thing Fhemmy said, do you have someone you trust. Preferably a trusted dealer rather than just an individual who doesn't know much about cars. Ordering from the US can save you a lot of money if done right, use a reputable dealer. Also do some personal research on your own, cut you coat according to your size. Do not try and get a car that has a retail price of about 1 million in Nigeria for 500k including shipping and clearing in the US. So be realistic with how much you are looking into saving, my take is that you can save up to 100k to 200k when you order direct from the US. Also some cars in Nigeria, have heard their mileage pushed back and their qualities are questionable. Although this is not always true for every car in Nigeria. Giving a family member or friend money to buy a car is not the safest option. There is a lot that goes into purchasing and successfully delivery a car to Nigeria. Friends and family might not be up to the task. In conclusion ask yourself, how much do I have, do I know a reputable dealer and do I car to know the history of the car? Feel free to visit our page on facebook to see what we are doing, will be more than happy to answer any questions you have to put you at ease and make your decision making process easier. |
We all know the popular car dealers on nairaland (Viperman, siena,Inspired_M) They have been around for a while and their names are well known. Kudos to them as they have helped shaped the auto industry and have taken us into the 21st century of auto buying. I myself am a big fan and a follower of their work, I have followed the likes of viperman and siena for years. Well here is a chance for new and upcoming dealers to showcase their work. I am big believer that competition is good for any business, brings the best out of every. There is enough space for everyone to shine. So feel free to use this topic to recommend or introduce dealers that you have worked with in the past. Please remember to include their contact details and possibly a brief summary of how your transaction went. |

@engrbanky I Have had a few request on this particular vehicle, they are not particularly common in the US both they are available. Their prices tend to be on the high side just because of their scarcity. Send me an email with specifications and particular year so I can better assist you @ obaoluba@gmail.com |
Buying a car is a serious decision that requires adequate decisions. Some buyers fail to do adequate research into what they are getting, Nigerians tend to have a habit of buying the same exact thing a colleague or friend has even if it is not appropriate. As a dealer based in the US, one thing I have noticed with uninformed buyers is that they tend to think all cars are the same as long as its the same name. For instance, I often get calls requesting the cost of delivering an EOD to Nigeria. I reply by looking at wholesale price for a decent car with less than 100k miles at a clean auction and I quote lets say 1.6m. The individual calls back yelling that its too expensive and his friend just bought one for 1.3 or a someone is offering him one in cotonu for 1.3. What i realize is that they have failed to do any research, some don't even know what year an EOD starts from. Obviously a 03 accord with 156k miles will have a different price compared to an 05 with 97k miles and they are both EOD. The other problem is people trying to cheat themselves, there is nothing wrong in trying to save but at some point you have to understand that you will get what you pay for. If you want quality then you obviously have to pay more. Don't ask to get a 05 sienna for 7000 dollars, that is close to impossible. A little understanding of how the business works and how the market works will help a buyer save and make sound decisions. The best way to save money is to find a reputable dealer in the US and order your car direct. You eliminate the middle man and that save gets passed along to you. The more the cars change hands, the more the markups. Also request for a vin check especially if you are buying an expensive vehicle. Contrary to what a lot of people think, dealers don't make a ton of profit on every car. The competition is very tight at the moment as a lot of Nigerians abroad see car buying and selling as a way to raise funds towards completing a project at home. As a dealer, to overcome the competition, one thing I have done is to improve customer service. Provide the best quality car for my customers, the fact is that every customer I have treated well has introduced another customer and that is the only way I have been able to survive in this business. Am not worried about the minimal profit I am making from you, I am focused on how many friends and colleagues can you introduce to me. If you have any questions about buying a car and what it entails feel free to contact me. We don't actually sell cars to people, we provide a service. We will walk you through the whole process, right from the inception of the idea of purchasing a vehicle to post sale support.
