Ayo Sogunro is Nigerian author, essayist and human rights lawyer. He is known for his work in social advocacy and for the protection of civil rights and the rights of minorities in Nigeria. He went on Twitter recently to express his views on why women are still being treated unfairly by their male counterparts using an illustration everyone can relate to. It makes for interesting reading, see his writing: 1. I once asked a friend if he was okay if his wife went out with friends at a bar every evening while he tended home. He said no. Yet, he did this daily very easily. That was how he came to understand that we do not treat women equally with men in Nigeria. The Twitter account of the Nigerian Army has deleted the tweet they sent out using a Donald Trump video to defend the former's actions against Shia Muslims last week by shooting at them for throwing stones during their protests, a situation which led to several deaths and injury on the latter. In the video, Trump was saying the US Military would likely shoot at protesters if they were to throw rocks at them. After the said tweet, the Nigerian Military faced heavy criticism for defending their action, which did not go down well with many Nigerians and indeed several observers from around the world. This could have been the reason why the Nigerian Military deleted the tweet. Another angle to this could also be the fact that Trump later released another statement saying he never meant that the US Military would shoot but rather, they would arrest those who threw rocks at them. The shoot to kill order the Nigerian Military officials involved in the clash followed during the Shia protests last week show that the Nigerian state is actively stirring up a potential threat to internal security and peace. The Shia Muslims have been killed many times and they could easily become a dreaded sect carrying out retaliatory killings not only against the Military but against innocent citizens as well. Has the Military and indeed the government thought about this possibility and how are they ensuring this does not happen? Surely constant killing and intimidation of any group within a democracy cannot be a solution to lasting peace! Speaking to some Nigerians on the matter, Lingo Africa gathers that the country is currently divided along ethnic and religious lines, with many defending the actions of the Military, but are also quick to reject same action being exerted on whatever group they belong to (which is a sign of dysfunctional thinking). Although, a few others insist the Shi'ites would stop protesting if only their leader, El Zakzaky, who has been held by the government since 2016 is released. A Nigerian Court has ordered the government to release him but he is still being held. The sad reality despite all these is those who should be looking into ways to engage the aggrieved party (Shia Muslims) are more concerned with the forthcoming 2019 elections and are busy politicking while the citizens are afraid for the consequences of the carelessness of the military. www.lingoafrica.com |
