Politics / Senator Ningi Dares Akpabio, Insists On N3.7tn Budget Padding by Omooba77: 5:50pm On Mar 11
Embattled leader of the Northern Senators Caucus, Abdul Ningi has come out to defend his claims of padding in the 2024 Budget after his controversial Hausa radio interview.

Addressing newsmen at the National Assembly, Senator Ningi insists that there was padding of N3.7 Trillion in the 2024 budget that is not traceable to any project.

He explains that he never said in the radio interview that the Federal Government is operating two budgets after the Presidency came out to defend itself in a statement issued by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President, Bayo Onanuga.

Politics / Hardship: DSS Confirms Looting Of Warehouses, Food Trucks In North East by Omooba77: 8:34pm On Mar 09
The Department of State Services Friday put to rest speculations and reports doing the rounds on looting of warehouses and food trucks in the North-East as a result of the food crisis which has led to widespread hunger across the country.

A rise in cost of living as a result of a soaring inflation rate to about 29.90 per cent in January, and a skyrocketing foreign exchange rate to about N1,594/$1 as of 10:53 am Friday, has thrown the country into an economic crisis it has yet to recover from.

Chairman of the North-East forum of the DSS, Babagana Bulama, while speaking at the 15th conference of the North-East directors of the state services at Damaturu, Yobe State, said the rising prices of goods has motivated hoodlums to take advantage of the crisis to attack warehouses, and vehicles with goods, particularly foodstuff being transported from one state to the other.

He said; “This edition is taking place at a time when the insecurity of the nation bothers on criminality, especially the trace of Boko Haram insurgency, banditry and kidnapping which have been on the forefront, now overtaken by social securities issues comprising of food crisis, to hoarding of foodstuff, hunger in the land, starvation and renewed threats of protests by organised labour groups such as the Nigerian Labour Congress, and others.

“Similarly, the rising prices of goods have motivated hoodlums to take advantage of the challenges to attack warehouses, and vehicles with goods, particularly food stuff being transported from one state to the other. The situation is also being exploited by economic saboteurs who are bent on destroying the economy. It is pertinent to mention that all this is happening barely a year after the 2023 general election.” (Channels)

Politics / Hardship: Onaiyekan, Afenifere, Others Make Case For Restructuring by Omooba77: 10:36pm On Mar 08
Cardinal John Onaiyekan, the pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, on Friday, came out in support of restructuring as a solution to the current challenges facing Nigeria, rather than pursuing a constitutional amendment.

This was as they raised concerns over Nigeria’s constitution, highlighting that it is riddled with inconsistencies and contradictions.

The renowned cleric, Onaiyekan, emphasized the urgent need for constitutional reform, stating that the current document does not adequately address how religion relates or contributes to the national progress of the nation.

Onaiyekan pointed out that the constitution has consistently failed to provide a clear framework for governance and religious affairs resulting in confusion and inefficiency within the political system.

He emphasized the need to decentralize power and foster greater autonomy for states, allowing for more effective governance and decision-making at the local level.

These stakeholders and others spoke at a policy dialogue on new governance structure for Nigeria, organized by the Abuja School Social and Political Thought, in Abuja.

His words: “If we take the present constitution, whether as amended or not amended it is riddled with inconsistencies or contradictions, problems when it comes to seriously talking about how religion relates to the nation.

“Which is why it is obvious we must look at it again. So, maybe it is good that we give it a look at changing to a parliamentary system. Perhaps we need to find out to ask those soldiers who threw away the parliamentary system and introduced the presidential system. What reasons did they have?”

Meanwhile, one of the representatives of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, Dr. Akin Fapohunda, while emphasizing on the need for restructuring, said Nigeria has not clearly defined the process for restructuring.

He proposed that with restructuring, each region would be encouraged to seek out ways to drive significant development and generate their own resources independently, rather than relying on resources from the nation’s capital.

“The bottom line is that we have no process. We are seeing the good but we have not defined the process, milestones and timelines that’s what is missing. We agree that the house is rotten and it needs to be pulled down and we designed an alternative model, which you are now selling. The political class, their teeth are dug into the one million barrel of crude that they are sharing every time. So, we have to confront them.

“What we are talking about is parliamentary and presidential governance, state/regional constitution—every region must have its own constitution, not one relative one that we are all battling and the third thing is to rework the list of functions”, he said.

A Catholic priest, Fr George Ehusani, said Integrity is key to nation building and national prosperity.

He added that elite idiocy would ruin any nation, no matter what kind of perfect, structural blueprint that they adopt.

“It is the place of leadership integrity in nation building, and national stability and prosperity. For I have become more convinced today than ever before that leadership debauchery and elite idiocy will ruin any nation no matter how perfect the political structure and governance blueprint that they adopt.

“And it has been well established by social scientists that the collapse of powerful civilizations is hardly ever precipitated by external attack, but instead by internal decay or what the ancient mystics call due to the want of honor in the soul, the want of order in the soul”, he said.

Corroborating, Uche Onyeagucha, while also supporting the calls for restructuring, said the move should not be only limited to constitutional amendments but reduction of the powers at the center.

“Good enough, Tinubu before now was one of the strong advocates of restructuring. But, what does restructuring mean? It simply means reduction of the powers at the center. If you don’t reduce the powers at the center and send it a little bit to the regions for them to manage, you’re wasting time with restructuring.

“This attempt at amending or altering the Constitution is the sixth attempt. When we were in the House of Reps, we didn’t have the privilege of doing one. I was in two-three to seven set, but ever since we have heard five attempts and it will become a four yearly ritual. Unless we do something dramatic with this one.

“There is this impression that is being created as if there are states that are not rich. Every state in Nigeria is rich, mention the state and I’ll tell you how rich they are. There is this assumption that we must all depend on oil. So many states don’t need the oil from the Niger Delta. There are states that don’t have oil but they have so much gas and they’re not even tapping into their gas.

“Several others have different minerals in their area. It is high time we let every state know that they are rich.”

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in a release on Thursday obtained by SaharaReporters said though the exact number of people abducted remains unknown "but it is estimated at over 200 people."

The United Nations has said it "strongly condemns" the reported abduction of internally displaced persons (IDPs), many of them women, boys and girls, in the Ngala Local Government Area of Borno State.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in a release on Thursday obtained by SaharaReporters said though the exact number of people abducted remains unknown "but it is estimated at over 200 people."

The UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Malick Fall, said, "On 29 February, members of a non-state armed group (NSAG) allegedly abducted the IDPs who had reportedly ventured beyond the safety of the trenches surrounding Ngala - from the ISS, Zulum, Kaigama, and Arabic IDP camps - in search of firewood.

"While an unspecified number of older women and children under 10 have reportedly been released, scores of IDPs remain unaccounted for, according to protection partners.

"I stand in solidarity with the families of all those abducted, especially children, and their communities and urge those who have abducted them to release them without harm.

"On behalf of the United Nations, I remind all parties to the conflict to adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian law to protect civilians from harm.

"In addition, I urge authorities and other partners to provide more livelihood opportunities for IDPs in camps in Borno State, alongside ongoing efforts for lasting solutions, to reduce the risks of insecurity and violence faced by IDPs.

"More than two million people in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe (BAY) states have fled to garrison towns where they have few, if any, livelihood options. Those who venture beyond the protective trenches surrounding these towns to forage or farm do so at great peril, with killings, abductions, forced recruitment and sexual and gender-based violence (GBV) rampant.

"Two days to the commemoration of International Women’s Day, this incident is a stark reminder that women and girls are among those most affected by conflict. The crisis in the BAY states is disproportionately affecting women, boys and girls. There is a high prevalence of GBV against women and adolescent girls, while boys are targeted for recruitment by NSAGs."

Politics / Floating Of Naira Worst Economic Decision - PENGASSAN by Omooba77: 7:42pm On Mar 04
*Urges FG to curtail crude theft, shore up production

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, has said the decision to float the nation’s currency is the major cause of the hardship, mass suffering, and other economic woes confronting the country, describing it as the worst economic decision-taking by the government.

President of PENGASSAN, Engineer Felix Osifo, in a chat with Vanguard, said people are already projecting that one Dollar will be exchanged for N4,000 before the end of the year because currency speculators are having a free day, contending that no country anywhere in the world floats its currency 100 percent in US Dollars.

According to him, “The removal of the fuel subsidy came with mixed feelings. As of then, our greatest concern was that it was done hastily. We were challenged by the fact that there was no plan in place to cushion the effects of its removal. One of the sectors impacted is the transportation sector. Before going into such a venture, it is right to proliferate everywhere with buses so that the Nigerian masses and students can use such buses for free.

“It would have reduced the high cost of transportation suffered by the people. Today, we can see where we are as a country. The reason why we are facing this difficulty is really not because the fuel subsidy was removed, it is mainly because of the exchange rate. In the last three years, we have shouted that the greatest policy that would affect us greatly if not well-managed is the exchange rate.

“When the exchange rate was N450, if crude oil price was around $75 to a barrel, the landing cost of PMS would have been about N350. That is half of where we find ourselves today and it could have also been better. We are challenged today because that exchange rate keeps increasing over time

“As we speak, everywhere is in chaos. The country is really going south and everywhere, it has been a problem. No country in the world floats its currency 100 percent in US Dollars. That is the worst economic decision-making. Today, we do not earn 100 percent and we have floated our currency. If it is left to supply and demand, speculators will come in. If not for the run around the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, operatives are also doing, which is also not sustainable, we could have got to N2,000. A lot of people are already projecting N4,000 before the end of the year. Currency speculators should not be allowed a free day.

“When a nation floats its currency, it is looking at the parallel or the black market, which has no fundamentals. When somebody has $5,000,000, he decides how much to sell it when another person is there to buy. The CBN or the official rate should not be chasing the parallel market. Those in the parallel market can do whatever they want, but the official rate should be maintained at a single rate. Another thing we can do is increase the supply side. Nigeria is an oil-dependent country.

“Over 90 percent of our foreign exchange earnings is from crude. We must curtail the issue of crude oil theft. We must create incentives for the International Oil Companies, IOCs, to increase their production for the indigenous producers to increase their production and stimulate more production. This is the quickest way for us to earn petrol dollars. When this comes in, it will shore up the supply and we will be able to meet the demand. Speculators cannot be eliminated, they will still be there.

“We should look at those critical items that we are importing for the manufacturing industry – spare parts, raw materials. We should look at all of them and reduce their duties.

Look at what the Customs is collecting for you to clear spare parts or any goods.

“They have adjusted their exchange rate to about N1, 600 and that would impede business. Food prices are expensive. People keep asking how it is related to the exchange rate; the question there is that the exchange rate is what is also affecting Automotive Gas Oil, AGO, popularly called Diesel. Before now, AGO was around N260. Last year it was around N700 to N800 naira. As we speak, AGO per litre is somewhere around N1,400.

“So, the woman that goes to Maiduguri market to buy tomatoes and bring them to Port Harcourt market or Lagos is going to ply the road with a vehicle which will be fuelled by AGO. That same woman, the house she lives in, the landlord increases the rent. She also has children in school and the school management would also increase the fee because the cost of running the school is high and teachers are demanding for more salaries.

Customs are meant to facilitate trade, they are not revenue collectors. If the target is for customs to collect N2 trillion, it will hinder the manufacturing sector and businesses. However, if the target is to facilitate businesses, they will still bring in revenue which may not be much but taxes can be made from the businesses.”

Politics / Hardship: Review Fuel Subsidy Removal, Falana Tells Tinubu-Led Government by Omooba77: 10:44pm On Mar 03
Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) is urging thePresident Bola tinubu-led government to review its fuel subsidy removal policy, due to allegations that the country is still paying for the subsidy.

Falana made the remarks in a signed statement titled “Fuel subsidy again?” that he released to newsmen on Sunday.

He stressed that it’s high time the federal government reviewed the fuel subsidy removal rather than urging Nigerians to continue to endure the hardship.

The statement reads, “President Bola Tinubu had on his inauguration declared an end to the subsidy era, triggering a hike in the prices of petroleum across the country.

“But in recent times, the World Bank and the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Pinnacle Oil and Gas Limited Mr. Robert Dickerman claimed that the Federal Government is still paying subsidy for the product.

“Curiously, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited has not deemed it fit to deny the serious allegation that fuel subsidy has been restored. Since there is no provision for fuel subsidy in the 2023 and 2024 Appropriation Acts the federal government should, without any further delay, confirm or deny the serious allegation and end the opacity surrounding the importation of fuel from foreign countries.

“It would be recalled that after the Muhammadu Buhari administration announced that it had removed subsidy on petrol, it turned around to spend N11 trillion on the so-called “under-recovery” within a period of 8 years.

“Therefore, instead of urging Nigerians to continue to endure the hardship caused by the removal of subsidies on petrol, the Bola Tinubu administration. If the federal government is spending as much as N1 trillion on fuel subsidy per month, it is high time the policy was reviewed in the interest of the Nigerian people.”

Politics / Nigerians Dying Like Flies Hit By Broom, By Dele Sobowale by Omooba77: 12:45pm On Mar 03
“Many people sold their boys and girls for a little rice…Hunger stalked us…People of all ages began to die….Everyone had to live with half-empty stomachs …People started looting, searching for food” -Bijoykrishna, survivor of the Bengal famine in 1943 (BBC, February 23, 2023)

The old man talking is reported to be 102 years old and one of the few survivors of the famine which killed millions in Bengal while World War II raged on around them. The savagery of the war and extremely bad weather resulted in horrible harvests. Suddenly, parents were “eating” their kids. Or what do you call selling your children to buy food? It happened in Bengal in 1943; it can happen anywhere – including Nigeria.

We are aware that some parents in Nigeria have been selling their children; heartless people run baby factories or phony orphanages as regular means of employment. It might not have reached the alarming proportions experienced in Bengal in the last century. But, the truth is – some adult Nigerians are already eating children. That preamble is, however, meant to draw the readers’ attention to the dangers we face as a nation with regard to food and famine.

To be candid, government at all levels is not being honest with us. Irrespective of which political party is in power at federal and state levels, their reactions to the looming famine is, frankly speaking, shocking. Millions of Nigerian lives are at stake. Perhaps it is only a coincidence that the FG, which encouraged herdsmen and bandits to drive millions of farmers off the field, was headed by Mohammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress, APC – whose symbol is the broom.

Present and future historians, writing about how we ended up in this terrible situation, in which most Nigerians now live with half-empty stomachs, must lay the blame squarely on the door step of Buhari and the APC National Secretariat. Buhari started the demolition job on our farms; and none of the members called him out. One official actually had the effrontery to go on television to offer fellow Nigerians the Devil’s alternative – your land or your life. That was the audacity of infamy which has landed us where we are with regard to food production. No nation can live with lunacy for eight years without finally living on the bread of sorrow. We are now going to start dying like flies, swatted by a broom!!!

FORGET THE LIES ABOUT FOOD PALLIATIVES
“Every government is run by liars; and nothing they say should be believed” – I F Stone

Can anyone remember how many tonnes of palliatives were promised Nigerians in September last year? And do you remember that Governor Soludo, APGA, speaking on behalf of the FG and State Governors, announced that N5 billion would be given to each state? On account of a conspiracy of silence, Nigerians were not informed that only N2 billion was actually delivered and not all the grains either. That should tell you the sort of leaders we are dealing with – they cannot be trusted to keep their words. That is why they have more Commissioners of Information and Special Advisers (Media) than the Premiers of East, North and West had during the First Republic. They are not appointed to shed light on issues but to confuse Nigerians. Here is an example.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Mohammed Idris, in mid-February this year, announced that President Tinubu had “ordered 102,000 metric tonnes of grains to be released from the National Reserves”. A week after, in my Monday article, titled FG AND THE 102,000 tonnes food swindle, I traced several promises previously made by this government. None of them had been fully redeemed. Given my knowledge about the National Food Reserves, I concluded that article by stating: “I doubt if the FG has 102,000 tonnes of food in its reserves.”

On Thursday, February 22, 2023, Mr Idris, in a manner reminding us of George Orwell’s ANIMAL FARM, changed the narrative. This time we were told: “The first one is that the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has been directed to release about (underlying mine) 42,000 MT of maize, millet, garri and other commodities in their strategic reserves so that these items will be made available to Nigerians; 42,000MT immediately.” The careful reader cannot fail to observe how 102,000MT, pledged two weeks earlier, shrank to 42,000MT to be released suddenly. What happened to the remaining 60,000MT of food stuff promised earlier?

The story has changed on those too. According to the latest announcement from Idris, which might not be the last, “we have held meetings with the Rice Millers Association of Nigeria (RIMAN), those who are responsible for this rice, and we have asked them to open up their stores…They have told us that they can guarantee about 60,000 tonnes of rice. They will make that available to Nigerians…” Again, a discernible reader can easily arrive at three obvious conclusions. One, the FG did not have 102,000MT of grains in its reserves when the first announcement was made. Two, the government will even have to struggle to provide the about 42,000MT. Three, the 60,000MT of rice is uncertain of delivery; for the simple reason that there is no guarantee from RIMAN to deliver 60,000MT of rice.

Instead of the deliberate attempt by the FG to deceive Nigerians, RIMAN’s position on the matter is quite clear. According to the RIMAN President: “No, no, no, we don’t have enough paddy in this country. Farmers lack enough paddy to sell. A lot of farmers have withdrawn services on the farms due to insecurity. This is in addition to the effects of fuel subsidy removal.” Obviously, Mr Idris is once again spreading falsehood in order to buy time for the FG. I know who is lying on this issue because I spent years in the rice sector and some of my friends are still in it. They tell me the truth because I advise them on investing – when they make profits.

That, unfortunately, takes us to the heart of the matter. Nigerians are now dying like flies swatted by a broom; and most of the FG’s utterances have proved to be untrue. How on earth can Tinubu plead for more time when his Ministers are busy telling us lies? To be candid, few will believe him – even if elder statesmen like Gowon plead for him. The people want the truth – no matter how bad. Only faith in their leaders or tyranny can make the people in a country endure years of great hardship as in China and India.

THE CONSEQUENCES ARE ALREADY HERE
“Death is here and death is there/Death is busy everywhere…” – Percy Byshe Shelley

People have always died, everyday, every hour, every minute and every second. Death by itself is not new. At almost 80, I am in sudden death period; so is everybody over 70 in Nigeria, where life expectancy is still about 52. So what makes death so special now? It is the spike in death rates. In about 70 years, since I first became aware of the consequences of death, in no single year was it brought to my attention that up to four people known to me died in one month. The rise in death rate first attracted my attention in December last year when seven people were reported to have died. In January, the figure rose to nine. There was acceleration in February. Today, February 25, 2023, as this article is being written, the number stands at thirteen. Four of my CLUB members and a close cousin have passed on in less than six weeks.

So, it was time to investigate – at the mortuary, at the cemeteries and talking to casket sellers. With four friends as undertakers or casket sellers, it was easy to establish that, for them, business is booming like never before. The only problem they have is with the low profile approach people now take to burials. Most families no longer buy expensive caskets. Times are hard.

A few of the recently departed souls were confronted with choosing between buying life-saving drugs or eating. There were no funds for the two. They opted for food. At least two told me that before leaving us to our self-inflicted problems of food, drugs and other scarcities and the inflation resulting from too much demand chasing insufficient supply.

The investigations confirmed my intuition. There has been a noticeable rise in burials in all the cemeteries in Lagos – involving all ages from babies a few days old to the aged. A twenty three years old attendant told me, “We have never buried so many people in a month as we are doing now. A pathologist said most of those they open up to find cause of death have next to nothing in their stomachs. So, hunger must have contributed to their demise.”

That is the truth we face; and which governments – FG, states and even local governments must face. Back to the land is no longer a slogan. It is the only way we can save Nigerians from dying like flies swatted by a broom.

FUND ME TO WRITE THE TRUTH ABOUT BUHARI
“Wherever God erects a house of prayer; the Devil always builds a Chapel there…” – Daniel Defoe, 1661-1731.

One Pastor from the Devil’s Chapel went to work for Buhari for eight years. While in residence at the Rock, which we have been told was overrun by demons by a previous lodger, the Pastor, on live TV, supported the slaughter of thousands of farmers who refused to surrender their land to herdsmen. Now he has joined others who inhabited the dungeon to write books about Buhari’s “achievements”.

In their books, you will not read about how herdsmen militia, about 400,000 armed assassins, was created to capture Nigeria. They are everywhere in Nigeria today — killing, kidnapping, raping and making farming impossible. Their Life Patron lives in peace in Daura. About 380,000 Nigerians have paid with their lives for this particular “achievement”. But, Pastor won’t tell you the truth about herdsmen genocide. I will. I started my own book two years ago; funding it myself. Now, I am stuck. Inflation and exchange rate threaten publication of the truth about Buhari. I need your help to finish the job.

Their book, packed full of lies, is advertised for N200,000. I can deliver the truth for N20,000 or less. Can you help? Please get in touch.

Some residents of the Federal Capital Territory have raided and plundered a warehouse belonging to the National Emergency Management Agency of Nigeria (NEMA).

SaharaReporters learnt that the warehouse was raided on Sunday morning.

The warehouse is located in Karimo, Phase 3 Region of the FCT, Abuja.

SaharaReporters gathered that the residents carted away foodstuffs and other items.

Personnel of the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja have been deployed to the area to disperse the looters and secure the building, SaharaReporters learnt.

The spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters.

She, however, added that the situation had been brought under control.

"The situation is now under control," she said.

Many Nigerians have been lamenting hardship following the removal of fuel subsidy and the devaluation of the naira after it was floated by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The economic policies of the administration have pushed up the prices of goods drastically and rate of inflation.

Politics / Re: CBN Raises Interest Rate (MPR) To 22.75% by Omooba77: 6:42pm On Feb 27
Bevista:
Fairly bold move by CBN.
---
The interest rate was too low compared to inflation resulting in a negative yield on bonds. Government cannot be borrowing at such a low rate while causing huge inflation on the masses. It encourages financial rascality.
---
The negative yield was partly why many investors preferred to preserve their funds in USD resulting in the significant depreciation of the naira.
---
Let's hope the fiscal side (Wale Edun & Co) begin to act responsibly.

Do you know the implications on business, you borrowed N100. You will pay N122.75, so if you are a producer, you must make return of at least 40% to break even, considering rent, charges, salaries, levies and your own profit. So what will you do......

Politics / CBN Raises Interest Rate (MPR) To 22.75% by Omooba77: 2:42pm On Feb 27
CBN governor Yemi Cardoso disclosed the decision of the meeting, the first since his announcement as the apex bank governor.

He said the move was in a bit to tame the stubborn inflation that had not responded much to the previous marginal increase.

The CBN governor said the committee raised the MPR by 400 basis points to 22.75 percent, and adjusted the asymmetric corridor at +100 and -700 basis points from +100 basis points and -300 basis points around the MPR.

He said the committee also increased the cash reserve ratio (CRR) from 32.5 percent to 45 percent, while retaining the liquidity rate at 30 percent.

On inflation, he said the rate of change in prices of goods and services rose to 29.9 percent in January 2024, from 28.92 percent in December 2023

He attributed the hike in inflation to rising costs of energy, high fiscal deficits and insecurity.

Business / Job Losses, Factory Closures Loom As Unsold Goods Pile Up — MAN by Omooba77: 10:42am On Feb 26
AGAINST the backdrop of sustained pressure in the foreign exchange market and high cost of production, the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, MAN has indicated that inventory of unsold goods is escalating to levels now threatening the existence of companies operating in the production sector of the economy with attendant job losses.

Financial Vanguard’s findings show that as of the weekend the foreign exchange market had recorded over 254 per cent plunge in the value of the naira since flotation of the currency by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in June 2023.

Recall that the naira traded for N471 per dollar in the official I&E market on June 13, 2023 before the floatation of the currency, but exchanged for N1,665.50 to a dollar as at February 23, 2024 on the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM), indicating a depreciation of more than 253.6 per cent over the eight-month period. The forex crisis is also stoking inflation, and coupled with high energy costs, purchasing power has continued plummet, stifling demand for goods.

Stockpiled warehouses
Speaking on the impact of this development on the manufacturing sector, Director General, MAN, Segun Ajayi-Kadir, said: “There are reports that across the board, many warehouses and plants of many manufacturing firms are stockpiled with unsold goods manufactured last year. “The development is as a result of the devastating effects of the exchange rate crisis, inflation, fake and sub-standard goods, smuggling and other macro-economics challenges.

“These had put many manufacturers in a great dilemma in the current year as they are applying brakes on production by watching keenly events in the country to know if there would be improvement in sales in order to create space for fresh production for the year.” Ajayi-Kadir warned that manufacturers may be forced to halt making new products, leading to workforce down-sizing, since production lines are becoming inactive. “The continued naira depreciation against the dollar, and the general forex volatility were forcing manufacturers to have a rethink. No genuine manufacturer could operate successfully and make profit under the current scenario, whereby the naira has been falling sharply more than expected in the country,” he stated.

Highlighting challenges in accessing foreign exchange (forex), Ajayi-Kadir disclosed that manufacturers primarily obtain forex through Bureaux De Change (BDCs), noting that banks typically offer less than 20 per cent of the required amount. No respite yet There seems to be no respite in sight as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned that the exchange rate of the Naira may further depreciate by about 35 per cent this year, adding that this could lead to inflation rate peaking at 44 per cent.

“Given the absence of local production and the recent liberalization of commodity imports, the exchange rate would likely depreciate further – by an estimated 35 per cent in 2024 – and contribute to a further sharp rise in inflation, peaking at 44 per cent, before monetary policy is eventually tightened sharply,” IMF stated in its February 2024 Post-Financing Assessment and Staff Report.

Financial Vanguard reports that manufacturing companies have been adopting diverse responses to the situation. A good number of them have been investing in backward integration for sourcing raw materials locally instead of imports that strangulate their finances due to the high exchange rate and scarcity of foreign currency. But some of the manufacturers are scaling down their operations while many have actually suspended operations.

Companies’ woes Against the backdrop of the forex crisis, Nigerian Breweries (NB) Plc recently issued a new price review notification to all its customers in the West Zone. In the notice to its consumers, NB said: “This is to inform you that we are constrained to review the prices of some of our stock keeping units (SKUs) with effect from Monday 19th February, 2024. This review has become necessary because of continued rising input costs and the need to mitigate the impact.”

SKU is a unique identifier used to track inventory within a business. Nigerian Breweries produces major alcoholic beverages like Star Lager, Gulder, Legend Extra Stout, Heineken, Goldberg, Life, and Star Radler amongst others. It also produces non-alcoholic drinks like Maltina, Amstel Malta, Fayrouz, Climax Energy drink, and Malta Gold. In a related development, in December 2023, Procter & Gamble (P&G) said it was leaving Nigeria, after just opening its diaper production line worth $300 million in Lagos in 2017. Other global conglomerates that have announced their exit from the country in the recent past include GSK Plc, Bayer AG and Sanofi SA.

Also last year, Unilever Plc cut some of the products manufactured in Nigeria, while Nestle SA has posted losses from its operations. The main reason for the exodus of these conglomerates is scarcity of dollars that they need to repatriate their earnings, with CBN still struggling to clear a backlog of demand for dollars companies require to pay debts and import raw materials.

This is in addition to a near complete absence of reliable electricity supply and congestion at the nation’s ports.

Way forward
On short-term measures to alleviate challenges faced by manufacturers, Ajayi-Kadir recommended freezing the rates at which the import of raw materials, spares, and machines is calculated. According to him, this would provide stability for manufacturers, shielding them from the impact of fluctuating currency values and fostering a more predictable business environment.

He also proposed that the government open new credit sources with rates not exceeding 5 per cent, providing quick wins to alleviate pressure on the manufacturing sector. “Additionally, the government should remove the price verification porter because it’s causing companies to shut down, they are not able to import those raw materials.

“The government should also open new windows for us to source our credit at rates that are not lower and that are not higher than 5 percent. “These are very quick wins that the government can do that can lower the pressure that is upon the manufacturing sector,” he said.

The MAN DG also emphasized the importance of promoting domestic production. “Historically, we have not prioritized our domestic economy or encouraged local production. Without local production, we cannot control the exchange rate or achieve a positive rate. Our reliance on imports leads to continuous pressure on the Naira to pursue the Dollar, resulting in an unfavorable exchange rate,” he stated.

MSMEs further threatened
On his part, Dr Femi Egbesola, President, Association of Small Business Owners of Nigeria (ASBON), blames the forex crisis on unrealistic and inconsistent fiscal and monetary policies. “So many policies of the government this past time have done more damage than good to the forex market. To get a different result, something must just be done differently,” he said. On what the forex crisis portends for small businesses, Eg-besola stated: “Existence of more micro and small businesses are further threatened. Many more businesses are closing down or are in an ailing situation.

“This results to more job losses, loss of revenue to government because dead businesses can’t pay taxes and levies, discourages foreign investment and local investors, increases crime and insecurity, for jobless ones will look for other means of survival, mostly illegal means, owners of businesses are now abandoning their unproductive and unprofitable businesses to relocate overseas, higher inflation rate and more.” He advised that small businesses need to be more creative and innovative now more than ever before. “Business owners need to begin to diversify to foods and daily need products. More attention should be on exportable products that can earn forex.

“SMEs should adopt the use of technology now more than ever before. Technology adoption will significantly reduce business cost. SMEs need to invest in online marketing and advertising of their products and services. This breaks borders and opens bigger markets. “SMEs should begin to take advantage of the African Free Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) opportunities to sell their products and services to other African countries without the statutory levies and taxes. This will lead to increase in sales and eventually push up productivity and profitability,” he added.

Managed naira float
In his comment, Dr Muda Yusuf, CEO, Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE), said: “The depreciation of the naira exchange rate is an inevitable outcome of the current economic reforms. The primary objective is to correct the distortions in the foreign exchange market which had lingered for some time. Admittedly, the economic, social and political costs are quite high. “The main anchor of the reform is the unification of the exchange rate, between the official and parallel markets. The challenge has been that our foreign reserves are not robust enough to make the process less painful.

The economy is still grappling with a major forex liquidity crisis.” Yusuf added that the implications of the current crisis for investors and citizens are multifaceted. “They include: intense inflationary pressures; escalating production and operating costs across all sectors of the economy; erosion of profit margins as businesses could not significantly transfer increased costs to consumers. “Businesses that have foreign exchange exposure are under severe pressure; businesses with foreign shareholders are struggling to deliver value to their offshore shareholders because of the erosion of domestic currency value; and planning has become difficult for many investors because of the current volatilities.”

He said that the current policy reforms are expected to ensure stability in the short to medium term, adding however that the reform architecture needs to be periodically reviewed in the light of the high social costs and market imperfections. “The trade policy window should be explored to mitigate the current escalating prices and production costs. The recent upward review of the exchange rate benchmark for the import duty computation should be reviewed. Trade costs should generally be moderated to give succour to businesses and citizens. “Complete and total floatation of the currency should be avoided in the light of glaring market imperfections. CBN should commit to the option of a managed float. The policy choice of complete floating of the naira requires a rethink in the light of the current inflationary outcomes, volatility and mark.

Politics / Activists Warn Nigeria Police, Military, Others Against Threatening NLC by Omooba77: 8:27pm On Feb 25
The group noted that most Nigerians are suffering and that people’s salaries and wages are becoming useless.

Human rights activists under the aegis of Concerned Activists have warned the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Police Force and soldiers to desist from threatening the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over the planned nationwide protest against hunger and hardship in Nigeria.

The group which gave the warning in a statement issued on Sunday, expressed their unreserved support for the labour union, saying that Nigerians are solidly behind its February 27 and 28 planned protest.

The group noted that most Nigerians are suffering and that people’s salaries and wages are becoming useless.

The Concerned Activists said that as President Bola Tinubu promised during his campaign before the 2023 general elections, the purchasing power of an average Nigerian has drastically reduced.

The statement read, “We the undersigned group of activists from different organisations and sectors have been watching with disdain the unapologetic manner with which President Tinubu and his hegemony have been mobilising fake activists, police, DSS, and ethnic jingoists to attack the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and attempt to discredit the 27th and 28th national protests against the massive hunger; rising cost of food, high cost of living, naira devaluation, oil deregulation, and such other anti-people policies that is making the whole country in hell.

“Most Nigerians are suffering. People’s salaries and wages are becoming useless and as President Tinubu promised during his campaign; the purchasing power of an average Nigerian has drastically reduced.

“We want to state that any organisation that is against a national protest at this period is hereby declared enemy of the people. How can people be in pains and any sane person is against national Protests?

“We also want to warn the DSS, the Police and soldiers to desist from threatening the Labour movement. Are you guys living on another planet? How many of you are living comfortably? We urge all military and security personnel to stand with the people in protests at this time.

“Even the palliatives promised, only two months have been paid to soldiers and other security agencies. Whereas Tinubu and his cohorts in government are spending billions on SUVs and living large while the masses are in penury.

“Those shameless DSS agents calling themselves civil societies are tabula rasas who do not know more than being against the people. A real activist must always fight and stand alongside the people at all times!

“We want to use this opportunity to specially call on Comrade Festus Osifo and the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to in the interest of all working people reconvene and join the national protests. We know there can be issues. But workers' futures are what matters the most.

“Finally, we demand a reversal of all pro-IMF and World Bank policies of neo-liberalism that are inflicting pains on the people. We stand by NLC and we will mobilise all working people, youths and artisans to be in the streets come 26,27, and 28th of February.

“Nigerians cannot continue like this. We refuse to die of hunger. We are taking our destinies into our hands!!!”
