Morocco to get Africa's first high-speed train. The new trains can reach speeds of 200 miles per hour, twice the speed of South Africa's Gautrain, a rapid mass transit system launched in 2012 which falls short of a high-speed train. A carriage of the French-made TGV train arrives at the Moroccan port of Tangier, the first high-speed train to operate in Africa. The TGVs are capable of speeds of 200 miles per hour, and they will cut the journey time between Tangier and Morocco's economic capital Casablanca by more than half. The trains are currently being tested ahead of the launch of the 350-kilometer route in 2018. The $2 billion investment in the new trains and track is funded by the governments of Morocco, France, Saudi, Arabia, Kuwait and the UAE. Over 200 kilometers of tracks have already been laid, according to Moroccan officials, with around 5,000 construction workers employed on the project. The Moroccan national rail operator ONCF claims that passenger numbers will double between Tangier station and Casablanca - from three to six million per year, providing a rapid return on investment. The new trains can reach speeds of 200 miles per hour. They will cut the journey time between the two cities by more than half -- to just over two hours. The $2 billion project has been in development for a decade, funded by the governments of Morocco, France, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the UAE. King Mohammed VI and the Moroccan government expect the trains to deliver wealth and prestige for the country. But opponents claim they are an expensive folly. http://www.allblogsdirectory.com/topic.php?id=178

Twitter transfer of power: Trump gets @POTUS Immediately after Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th president of the United States, he gained another prestigious title: @POTUS. The Obama administration handed over the Twitter handles for official accounts like @POTUS, @FLOTUS, @VP, @WhiteHouse and @PressSec to the incoming Trump administration on Friday in the first Twitter transfer of power in U.S. history. The Twitter handles officially switched over at 12:01 p.m., right after Trump was sworn in as president. The accounts for Trump's team start fresh. All of the tweets from the previous administration were removed and archived on a set of newly created accounts, including @POTUS44, @VP44 and @FLOTUS44. If you've retweeted or embedded posts from these accounts over the years, they will still show up, but from an account ending in 44. These archived accounts, along with White House social media accounts on Facebook (FB, Tech30), Instagram, YouTube and Tumblr, will be managed by the National Archives and Records Administration. But perhaps most importantly, Trump's administration will inherit the millions of followers for each account. The @WhiteHouse and @POTUS accounts each have more than 13 million followers. The transfer of those followers was not immediate, however. The @POTUS account started with zero followers and was back up to about four million after an hour. Those who chose to follow these accounts for Obama will automatically be following Trump and his administration -- at least until they opt out. The massive social media transfer has been in the works for months. The White House first announced its plan just days before the election -- at a time when many expected Hillary Clinton to win. "While much of the digital transition is unprecedented in the United States, the peaceful transition of power is not," Kori Schulman, special assistant to the president and deputy chief digital officer, wrote in a blog post in October. As a result of those efforts, Trump and his team will now be able to choose whether to tweet from @POTUS or his personal account @RealDonaldTrump, which recently topped 20 million followers. It's unclear which one Trump, known for tweeting at all hours, will prefer. Trump's first tweets after his inauguration were posted to @RealDonaldTrump. It took another 90 minutes for Trump's team to tweet as @POTUS. http://www.allblogsdirectory.com/topic.php?id=176

Gambia's Yahya Jammeh 'agrees to step down' Incoming President Adama Barrow says outgoing leader of 22 years has finally agreed to cede and will leave the country. Gambia's president has agreed to leave after weeks of refusal. Gambia's new president has said that Yahya Jammeh, who ruled the country for 22 years and refused for weeks to step down after losing the recent election, has finally "agreed to leave". Writing on Twitter on Friday, Adama Barrow said Jammeh would also leave the country. "I would like to inform you that Yahya Jammeh has agreed to step down. He is scheduled to depart Gambia today. #NewGambia," he tweeted. I would like to inform you that Yahya Jammeh has agreed to step down. He is scheduled to depart Gambia today. #NewGambia — Adama Barrow (@adama_barrow) January 20, 2017 Barrow was sworn-in at Gambia's embassy in Dakar in neighbouring Senegal on Thursday. Red carpets were reportedly laid out at the airport in Gambia's capital in what appeared to be preparations for a speech by Jammeh and a departure. Also on Friday, Gambia's chief of defence forces Ousmane Badjie pledged his allegiance to the country's new president, a major shift as mediation continued to persuade Jammeh to cede power. Jammeh had rejected Barrow's December 1 election win, despite significant pressure from regional powers and the UN, sparking a major crisis. At least 46,000 people have fled Gambia for Senegal since the start of the crisis fearing unrest, the UN's refugee agency UNHCR said, citing Senegalese government figures. Celebrations erupted in Banjul, meanwhile, where tensions have run high especially since the declaration of a state of emergency by Jammeh made on Tuesday. Barrow, a real estate agent turned politician, had flown into Senegal on January 15 to seek shelter after weeks of rising tension over Jammeh's stance. West African troops had entered the country to bolster new President Barrow, but military operations were suspended in favour of a final diplomatic push to convince Jammeh to exit peacefully. In his first media interview with Al Jazeera, Barrow said that he hoped the 15-nation Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) could find him a safe haven. Jammeh started negotiations with ECOWAS on Thursday. He demanded an amnesty for any crimes that he may have committed during his 22 years in power and that he be permitted to stay in Gambia, at his home village of Kanilai. Those demands were not acceptable, said Marcel Alain de Souza, head of ECOWAS. Jammeh's continued presence in Gambia would "create disturbances to public order and terrorist movements" he said. Al Jazeera's Nicolas Haque, reporting from Dakar, said: "A stable Gambia, Barrow told me, has to be without Jammeh in the picture. That's why this news is quite significant for all those that have left the country - 46,000 since January 1 ... They hope he leaves so they can come back." http://www.allblogsdirectory.com/topic.php?id=174

Mohamed Aboutrika's name added to Egypt 'terror list' Lawyer for four-time African Footballer of the Year says court's decision is 'contrary to the law' and will be appealed. Egyptian authorities have added retired football star Mohamed Aboutrika, one of the country's all-time greatest athletes, to an official "terror list". Aboutrika, known as The Magician, is accused of funding the banned Muslim Brotherhood, which Egypt's government designated a "terrorist" organisation after the army removed democratically elected President Mohamed Morsi from office in July 2013. Since then, a police crackdown against the Brotherhood, which maintains that it is peaceful, has left hundreds dead and tens of thousands in jail, many under draconian anti-protest laws. Trial of Mohamed Morsi and Al Jazeera journalists a 'sham', says Egyptian journalist Under an anti-terrorism law passed in 2015 and heavily criticised by international human rights groups, any person placed on a "terror list" is subject to a travel ban and faces having their passports and assets frozen for three years. Aboutrika, 38, publicly supported Morsi's bid to become president in 2012 but has denied that he ever funded the Brotherhood. Mohamed Osman, Aboutrika's lawyer, said the Criminal Court's decision was "contrary to the law", adding that his client has not been convicted or formally notified of any of the charges against him". "We will appeal this decision," he said. In 2015, a government committee, established to seize and manage Brotherhood properties and funds, froze Aboutrika's assets. Osman, the lawyer, said Aboutrika's asset freeze is still in place despite having been lifted by a court ruling in June 2016. The former midfielder is currently in Gabon as a commentator for the Africa Cup of Nations tournament. Osman declined to specify when his client might return to his home country. Besides Aboutrika, Egypt's "terrorism list" currently includes more than 1,500 names, including Morsi, Mohammed Badie, the Muslim Brotherhood's spiritual guide, and other leaders of the group. Ashraf Bader Aldin, a former member of the Egyptian parliament's planning and budget commission, says that the government "is accusing this small number of people for all of Egypt’s failures". "All of the people are accused of different things like harming the economy and spreading false information … and are blamed for the rise of unemployment among other things," Bader Aldin, who is also included in the "terror list", told Al Jazeera. "It doesn't make any sense. Also, the 'terrorists' on the list are placed there for three years. If we are 'terrorists', why are we listed only for three years?" Footballer of the Year Aboutrika won an unprecedented fourth African Footballer of the Year award after helping Cairo's Al-Ahly to its eighth African Champions League title before retiring in late 2013. Earlier on Wednesday, the Egyptian government announced another step in its crackdown against the Brotherhood. Inside Story - Is Egypt facing a crisis? It said it had arrested nine alleged leaders of the group for planning to "disrupt order and security" on the upcoming January 25 anniversary of the 2011 uprising that removed the longtime leader Hosni Mubarak. In a statement, the interior ministry said the men had scheduled meetings a day earlier in Cairo and had plans "aimed at provoking public opinion by exploiting the economic situation the country is going through and coordinating with extremist entities". Egypt's economy is a particularly sensitive topic this year, as the country has undertaken drastic economic policy changes to rein in unsustainable spending on subsidies and allow the currency to float freely, moves that have pushed up prices sharply. The poor, who make up nearly half the country, have been particularly squeezed. In a statement, the ministry accused the group of planning to fabricate crises, in particular among "the masses and workers". Source: http://www.allblogsdirectory.com/topic.php?id=171 |

Vice President Saidy quits, abandoning Yahya Jammeh. Saidy is the highest level official to abandon Jammeh, who refuses to step down despite losing last month's election. Isatou Njie Saidy had been the vice president of Gambia since 1997 [EPA] Gambia's Vice President Isatou Njie Saidy has quit, Al Jazeera has learned, amid rising political tensions as Yahya Jammeh refuses to step down as president despite losing a December election. Saidy, who had been in the role since 1997, is the highest level official to abandon Jammeh's camp in his standoff with opposition leader Adama Barrow, who won the election. Jammeh, who lost a December 1 presidential vote to Barrow, has refused to leave office despite international pressure and a threat by leaders of the Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS, to enforce his election defeat. Barrow - who fled to Senegal earlier in the week - has pledged to go ahead with his inauguration on Thursday. The president-elect on Thursday tweeted that he would be holding the inauguration ceremony at the Gambian embassy in Dakar, the Senegalese capital. Jammeh's whereabouts were unknown on Thursday, hours after a last-minute failed attempt by Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz to convince him to give up the presidency. Troops from Senegal, Nigeria and Ghana on Thursday remained in position in Senegal in case a military intervention becomes necessary. Sidi Sanneh, the former Gambian foreign minister, told Al Jazeera: "There is a certain faction in the [Gambian] army, who decided that they will not fight a losing battle [against the ECOWAS forces] … As far as we are concerned, we don’t expect much of a resistance from that end of the military establishment." He added: "However, there is another faction, the favourite of Jammeh, who enjoyed the fruits of the 22 years of dictatorship. We expect them to put up a fight. How much of a fight? That is still up in the air." Source: http://www.allblogsdirectory.com/topic.php?id=169 |
INTELLIGENT ROBBERY, WITHIN BANKING HALLS A Member shared this experience on http://allblogsdirectory.com Please, let's be careful inside the Banking Hall. I have a neighbour who sells foodstuffs. She travelled for the new year so she instructed a relation to pay in the money(130,000) into her Diamond Bank Account... She was in the Banking Hall, Warehouse Branch, Apapa, with the money in her bag. While filling her teller, someone asked her if she was paying in & at which she said yes. She later joined the long pay-in queue. After a moment, and with d queue practically not moving, a young man, dressed in corporate suit (all thought was the Bank's cashier) came close to her and in a low voice asked for people who were paying above 100,000. About five people stepped out and he asked them to follow him a few meters away from the queue. They all thought he was the Bank's staff, out to offer help. He collected all their money, the completed tellers and asked them to wait on the line, so he can go in and stamp their tellers..... And so the man left. They waited and waited endlessly, not knowing that he had long exited the Bank, through the rear exit, with their over #650,000.00. It was after d seemingly unending wait they decided to report d matter to the Manager, who had to come down... checked the CCTV footage and behold, the gentleman in suit, was neither the Bank's cashier nor even a staff ! The security guard confirmed it was the third time such was happening in that same Branch alone ! My fellow Nigerians, we must BEWARE of activities of fraudsters, particularly in the Banking Halls !! We should please share to avoid more people falling victims. Source: http://www.allblogsdirectory.com/topic.php?id=165 |
