South African prisoners have voiced their dissatisfaction after the Department of Correctional Services announced that beef and chicken would be reduced from their meal plan in favour of cheaper alternatives.
Some have even claimed that they have been left “starving” by smaller portions of food.
The department is headed by Minister Pieter Groenewald, who has facilitated a crackdown on unlawful practices behind bars.
This week, the Department of Correctional Services, they have introduced a new meal plan to prisoners.
This includes less red meat, chicken, and fish and more “cheaper alternatives” like soya products.
According to reports, the department spends around 500 rands (41,000 naira) a day for each prisoner’s expenses.
Department spokesperson Singabhako Nxumalo told eNCA: “It is more than just a matter of costs involved, but it’s about flexibility so at least there is a variety than having to consume the same items”.
Nxumalo emphasised that the new meal plan had “nutritional value.”
According to the 12-day meal plan, the following reductions will be made:
4 Beef servings to 1 beef serving 3 Chicken servings to 1 chicken serving 2 Fish servings to 1 fish serving No tea and coffee
Prisoners will be introduced to “cheaper alternatives” like beans, eggs, soya, and chicken giblets.
According to the report, prisoners have voiced their dissatisfaction with the new meal plan.

Saviola86: I used to have desire to japa when my two of my friends and some course mates moved to UK and US then some neighbors relocated to Canada, Australia, Finland etc.
I felt the need to move too but last year I noticed that those that travelled are not doing too well.
They send nothing home, in committee of friends fund raising groups they barely send more than 10k and these were guys that I know love show off
Three of them that are very close to me one in UK, two others in Canada always tell me about their struggles.
Sometimes when we talk, 11pm they will tell me that they are at work doing night shifts, any time you call, they are working.
These were guys doing well in Nigeria, like I know they make 800-1m in Nigeria. Their businesses were doing fine, they had workers and car.
The other friend in Australia had a good job atleast I know but hearing them talk about going to sweep people's home, going to care for old people, working in factories, working late at night discouraged me.
It's been 4yrs one of them traveled (UK) but he is yet to settle.
I don't want a life of work work work and then at old age what I have only is maybe a rental house that I built because I have observed some people that traveled abroad for greener pastures what they really have to show for it is the house they built in the village or town.
I am not doing too bad in naija and I believe in 2yrs time I should commence my building project
