Nigeria recorded her highest electricity generation level for the first time in her electricity generation history, report from the office of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has disclosed. The power generation figures, which were recorded in three days of the first two weeks of December were 5,156 megawatts(MW), 5,077MW and 5,103MW Obtained last night from the Advisory Power Team of the Vice President, in Abuja, the report, detailing the amount of power generated and wheeled out to the national grid, stated that on December 8, power generation hit an all-time record of 5,156MW to put the last record of 5,074.7MW achieved in February 2016 to the bins. It then dropped to 5077MW on December 14, and again peaked at 5,103MW the next day which, was December 15. “The three highest Nigerian generation records have occurred this month on December 8,14 and 15 2017 (5,156MW, 5,077MW and 5,103MW),” said the report. The report also provided operational details of the industry as at Friday, December 15, saying that the Trans Amadi power plant, which, hitherto, was down has been restored to functionality. It equally stated that average power sent out to the 11 electricity distribution companies within the period was 4,200MW, up by about 171MW from the previous day’s supplies to them. According to it, the reported gas constraint experienced by the industry was 631MW, while reported line constraint was 44MW. It explained that about 939MW of the generated electricity could not be utilised by the Discos due to their feeders’ challenges. The water management constraint experienced, it noted was 344MW. Cumulatively, the report stated that the power sector lost an estimated N940 million of revenue that should have come to it but could not due to the constraints reported on December 15 2017. Similarly, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) disclosed that as power generation continues to improve in the country, it would before January 31, 2018, add about 1000MW transformer capacity to the grid, stating that by then most of its transmission projects would have been completed. TCN also said this would further be improved upon with the implementation of the Nigerian Electricity Transmission Access Project (NETAP), which successfully negotiated and finalised its terms with the World Bank on December 8. Interim Managing Director of TCN, Mr. Usman Mohammed, who made these known to journalists in Abuja, also stated that, at the momentum, the transmission company could not be said to be the weakest link in the industry anymore. Mohammed explained that the Transmission Rehabilitation and Expansion Programme of the TCN has continued to attract financing for several of its projects, and that the programme would upgrade Nigeria’s transmission capacity to 20,000MW in the next four years. http://www.energywatchng.com/nigeria-electricity-generation-attains-new-peak-5156mw/

The poor payment pattern of the DisCos to the GenCos seems not ending as the 11 electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) paid N13 billion to 22 Generation Companies (GenCos) as they owe another N29.5bn for August energy billing, data from the Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET) has shown. In a publication yesterday, the agency said the GenCos advised a N44.154bn energy invoice from which the DisCos paid N13.520bn, representing an average 30 per cent payment rate. The most performed DisCo for the month was Benin DisCo with 41 per cent payment rate. It took 8.29 per cent of the monthly energy and paid N1.5bn from its N3.6bn invoice. Eko DisCo was next with 40 per cent rate after it paid N1.9bn from its N4.85bn invoice for the 11 per cent grid energy it consumed. Ikeja DisCo also did 40 per cent payment by paying N1.9bn from its N4.86bn invoice for the 11.02 per cent electricity it took in August. The worst performed was Yola Disco which had N1.47bn invoice for taking 3.3 per cent energy allocation but remitted zero naira in the month. The DisCo is presently managed by the Federal Government after its owner declared a force majeure two years ago. Kaduna DisCo topped the list of the other poorly performed firms by remitting 14 per cent (N400 million) from N2.9bn invoice it was given while consuming 6.6 per cent energy level. Jos DisCo did 15 per cent after paying N327m from its N2.1bn invoice and took 4.9 per cent energy; Kano DisCo had 16 per cent payment level as it paid N500m from a N3.1bn invoice. http://www.energywatchng.com/discos-pay-n13bn-n44-2bn-august-energy-bill-22-gencos/ |

The Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode as said that the state government is concluding plans with major stakeholder in the power sector which include the gencos, discos and TCN to ensure uninterrupted power supply for residents of Lagos state BY 2018 He noted that the state government had already devised strategies to short-circuit power generation, transmission and distribution to ensure there was “24/7 power supply to residents.” Ambode spoke at a recent interactive session with members of the business community and informal sector, a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Habib Haruna, said on Sunday. “Presently, we have less than 1,000MW in Lagos and the fundamental issues remain with generation, transmission and distribution. Transmission is still owned primarily by the Federal Government. But in Lagos State, we have become creative and we have done Independent Power Project through which we were able to generate 47.5MW which was distributed short-circuiting transmission. “So, if it works, does it look like a template we can now use to get power freedom or what we call power security? If we say we are the fifth largest economy in Africa and we are not in control of how power is generated in an economy that wants to move from fifth to third, then something is wrong. “So, what we are saying is, let’s find a way to short-circuit them within the ambit of the law,” the governor was quoted as saying. Ambode noted that the state government was also talking with electricity distribution companies operating in the state to supply 24/7 power to residents at a higher tariff, subject to agreement of all stakeholders, while government would be the guarantor of the people. http://www.energywatchng.com/lagos-state-get-247-hours-electricity-supply-2018-ambode/ |
