Private and public schools in Lagos State will now resume on October 8, 2014.
Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, approved the new resumption date at stakeholders’ forum which had in attendance head teachers and principals of various schools in the state, held at Lagos Television Blue Roof, Agindigbi, Ikeja.
According to the governor, the shift is to allow for adequate and even distribution of all necessary preventive materials in schools across the state.

Residents of Uzama Street, Off Oliha Quartres, in Egor Local Government of Edo State, were on Friday thrown into mourning when a section of a building located on the street collapsed, killing no fewer than three persons.
Our correspondent gathered that the building, operated by a popular pentecostal church in Benin, caved in when some youths in the area, hired by the management of the church, were carrying out a demolition exercise in order to create more space in the church compound.
One of the hired youths, who survived the incident disclosed that the owner of the building hired him for N3,000 per day. He told The PUNCH under condition of anonymity that, although nine of them were hired by the owner of the building, five of his colleagues were breaking the pillars of the building before tragedy struck.
He said that other survivors were taken to an undisclosed hospital in critical condition.
He explained that the building, which collapsed at about 1pm, housed some officials of the church, who fled as soon as the incident occurred for fear of being lynched by angry youths in the area.
“The owner of Christ Chosen Church Deliverance Centre told us to demolish the building because they wanted more space in the compound. But some of us went out to eat because we were hungry.
“As we were eating, many people rushed to where we were coming from. We thought it was a fire outbreak. But when we got there, we discovered that the building has collapsed.
“We were nine in number but four of my colleagues were in the building before it collapsed. Two were brought out alive with injuries. One died and two others are still inside.
“We have already demolished the upper part of the building and wanted to break the pillars of the lower parts, so that the building would fall. It was when one of us started work that the building fell,” he said.

A teenager, Osazu, suspected to be a relative to one of the victims who was said to have been brought out of the debris dead told our correspondent that he was alerted that the building where his brother, Orosa, aged 26, was working had collapsed.
“It was when I came back to rest after work that my brother came to tell me that the building where my brother went to collapsed. I don’t know if he is still alive because people are just telling me what happened,” he said.
Another resident attributed the collapse to greed on the part of the owner.
“How much is a crane to demolish the building? When I was passing, I wondered why a big church like this cannot hire a crane for N65,000 per day to do a neat job.
Some crowd of angry youths in the area were seen destroying the church auditorium, while a vehicle operated by the church was set ablaze.

However, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Folusho Adebanjo, who visited the scene of the collapsed and confirmed the incident, told The PUNCH that one, out of the five persons working in the building died.
“One is unfortunately dead. There are rumours that we still have like two people there.
“Of course, there is absolute calm there now.
Some policemen were also seen trying to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

A young student in a university in China, who hid her pregnancy throughout, gave birth to a baby girl inside a toilet pipe, hoping the baby would flush down the pipe. Fortunately the pipe wasn’t wide enough to take the baby down and so her body became wedged a short way down the pipe. The baby immediately started crying and the new mum fled. Fortunately, the baby’s cries was loud enough to attract the attention of other students who immediately raised an alarm.
Firemen were called to the student dormitory in the city of Linyi in China’s Shandong Province, and they immediately went to work to free the new born

But firemen couldn’t free the child from above (pictured during the rescue mission). Fire Brigade spokesman Tao Fang told a local newspaper
“It was impossible to get the baby out from above. She had fallen into the toilet and gone down the pipes were she had got stuck between the third and fourth floors. We used an angle grinder to break open the pipeline on the third floor and we could then push the child up to colleagues on the fourth floor where she was handed to medics who were waiting to take her to hospital.”
The police tracked down the child’s mother who was a student living in the hotel and they took her to the hospita; and who was also taken to hospital. Police say they are waiting to question her before deciding what she might be charged with.

The attention of the Nigeria Police has been drawn to an on-line publication entitled ‘Welcome to Hell-Fire’: torture and other ill-treatment in Nigeria.
While we do not question the freedom of Amnesty International to earn its relevance and bread, the Nigeria Police takes serious exceptions to some blatant falsehoods and innuendoes contained in that report.
For one, it smacks of indecency and intemperate language to liken our dear nation Nigeria, to hell fire. That cannot be true. We believe that Nigeria is a growing nation, green and largely peaceful.
While the Nigeria Police and other operators in the criminal justice sector are undergoing systematic reforms, and aligning themselves with the demands of democracy, there is no gain saying the fact that the Nigeria Police Force has since improved its operational efficiency and effectiveness. Since the dawn of democracy in 1999, the Nigeria Police Force has significantly improved on its human rights records, owing largely to training and re-training, community policing, attitudinal change and structural transformation.
In its report under reference, Amnesty International did admit in its methodology that it visited some Police Formations and interviewed some family members of suspects. At no time in its report, did Amnesty speak or interface with the Police authorities. This obviously shows their disdain and apparent lack of character where the democratic tenets of fair hearing are concerned.
The report covered a seven year period of 2007-2014. I dare say that some of the issues raised have since been dispensed with and settled.
Of a truth, torture or ill-treatment is not, repeat, NOT an official policy of the Nigeria Police.
The Code of Conduct of Officers, as well as our Regulations prohibit torture and incivility to members of the public. We are versed with international best practices, and the dictates of the Nigerian Constitution as regards human rights. So the Police do not routinely torture suspects. It is not systemic or endemic. Whenever instances of human rights abuses are brought to the notice of superintending officers, the offending personnel are promptly sanctioned in line with the laws and regulations. For the avoidance of doubt, Nigeria Police Force has a zero tolerance for corruption and abuse of power. There is no Immunity for impunity in Nigeria Police Force.
Besides, the Nigeria Police is women-friendly. We do not target sex workers, nor routinely adopt rape as a weapon. Instead, the Police has established a family and human trafficking unit to protect the rights of women, children and the vulnerable members of our society.
However, the Nigeria Police Force shall meticulously scan through the document, and investigate any current human rights abuses linked to any officer or formation. Any identified and established case of malfeasance or misconduct shall be treated in line with the laws and regulations.
We crave the indulgence of Amnesty International to, for the first time, furnish the Police with specific details of its allegations to enable us reach the ends of justice for the alleged victims, and to improve our service delivery.
The Nigeria Police Force remains responsive to the yearnings of Nigerians for improved safety and security.
