The Senate on Tuesday rejected a suggestion from Senator Francis Fadahunsi for a five-year temporary ban on the importation of generators in order to hasten the solution to the energy crisis in Nigeria.

Fadahunsi had during a debate on the motion sponsored by Senator Chukwuka Utazi, on the need to address Nigeria’s power problems, urged the Senate to include in its prayers, the ban on importation of generators for five years but his colleagues shut down his suggestions.

The prayer was shut down by senators when the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan subjected it to a voice vote.

The Senate however, mandated its Committee on Power to investigate the activities of power generating and distribution companies with a view to unravelling the causes of unsteady power supply in Nigeria.

Russia could be set for a new ban from major international sporting events like next summer's Olympic and Paralympic Games over claimed inconsistencies in anti-doping data.

The World Anti-Doping Agency's executive committee will gather on December 9 to consider a formal recommendation from its independent compliance review committee (CRC), which is expected to call for the country's national anti-doping agency RUSADA to be declared non-compliant over the anomalies in laboratory results.

The data in question relates to a period from January 2012 to August 2015 and was obtained by WADA in January of this year under the terms of RUSADA's reinstatement to compliance in September 2018.

Federal University Dutsinma in Katsina State, has appealed to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities nationwide and other Nigerians to pray for the release of Abubakar Idris, a Senior Lecturer in the university, abducted three months ago.

Idris, a lecturer in the university’s department of languages and linguistics was abducted on August 2, at his residence in Kaduna State.

A statement by FUDUMA’s Acting Director Public Relations and Protocol, Habibu Matazu, issued on Monday in Katsina, also appealed to the abductors to release the lecturer. The university noted that since the abduction, there had been no trace of the victim, as there was no demand for ransom nor any other lead on his whereabouts.

According to the statement, the university management had reported the matter to all the relevant security agencies and Governor Aminu Masari for their intervention.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) says it will start discussing with Super Eagles’ Coach, Gernot Rohr on a new contract before his current deal ends next year.

NFF president, Amaju Pinnick said at the weekend that the federation was satisfied by the Franco-German coach’s ability to assemble a formidable team, noting, however, that Rohr’s neglect of home-based players will be addressed when the parties meet.

Pinnick also added that Rohr’s salaries up to October have been paid by the sponsor, saying that there was no dispute between the NFF and the Eagles manager.

“The NFF would start discussing with Rohr on the renewal of his contract by January, if he agrees with the clauses, terms and conditions in his contract, the federation will give him a new contract before his current deal expires next year.

“We will talk about his refusal to pick home-based players because the domestic players need to play for his national team to gain recognition. That way, he can be seen by good foreign clubs.

“This does not mean that we will impose any player on the coach. If the coach finds any player worthy to play for the Super Eagles in the NPFL, he should use the player.

“The federation has never imposed any player on Rohr since he took charge of the Super Eagles. I want to also bring to clarification that Rohr’s salary has been paid till date, the only money that will be paid soon to the team is the AFCON Bronze medal bonus,” he said.

Rohr last week led the Eagles to consecutive wins over Benin and Lesotho in the qualification for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

His young, dynamic Eagles have got many tipping the side for great success in the coming years.

President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Reverend Samson Ayokunle, has dismissed claims that he prayed for Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello’s re-election.

This was after a photo of Bello, who is contesting the November 16 governorship election in Kogi state holding hands with the CAN president.

However, in a statement by the Director, Legal and Public Affairs, Kwamkur Samuel Vondip, the CAN president said the photo was taken with Bello sometimes in July when he proposed to lay the foundation of the first-ever Chapel at the Government House in Lokoja.

“We, therefore, debunk this type of blackmail and warn the people behind it to desist from this type of manipulation because God will hold them liable for this evil one day. This information is totally false and misleading.

“We call on all Christians and indeed well-meaning Nigerians to disregard any information purported to emanate from CAN on the forthcoming elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states.

“The leadership of the CAN have taken notice of a picture of the CAN President Rev. Ayokunle, Kogi State CAN Chairman and Governor Bello making the rounds in the social media where it was painted as if the CAN president went to the governor at this period of electioneering campaign to pray for his re-election.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Governor Bello sometimes in July, 2019 proposed to lay the foundation of the first-ever Chapel at the Government House so that the Christians in the Government House might have a place of worship just as their Muslim counterparts. The Kogi CAN leadership invited the president of CAN to come and lay the foundation stone of the chapel and this was done to the glory of God, and of course special prayers were held at the function for the government of Kogi State,” the statement explained.

“Let it be known right away that those behind this cheap propaganda are glaringly mischievous individuals who do not mean well for the church and Nigeria. They are people without the fear of God who forgot that God will hold them responsible for every idle/evil word and misleading information they spread about others.

“We wonder when it becomes a sin for the President of CAN to lay the foundation of a chapel and pray for government functionaries!

“For any person to bring up the picture at this critical period of elections and paint it as prayers for the re-election of the governor shows the extent of mischief and desperation by the individuals behind it,” he added.

Chief Damishi Sango, the embattled Plateau Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday formally stepped aside by handing over to his deputy, Mr Amos Gombe.


The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that Sango’s resignation was announced by Lt.-Gen. Jeremiah Useni (rtd), the leader of the party in the state.



Useni, also PDP governorship candidate in the 2019 general elections, disclosed this at a stakeholders meeting in Jos on Friday.


“Sango is no more our state chairman as directed by the National Secretariat but now a member of PDP Board of Trustees (BOT). “Mr Amos Gombi, his deputy, is now the acting chairman of PDP in the state. This was done to settle whatever crisis we were having.


“Left for us the leaders of the party in the state, there is nothing like PDP I and PDP II because we are one big family undivided. “The allegation that Sango collected money from the headquarters for 2019 general elections was not true because three of us signed for whatever stipends given to us by the National Secretariat. “So, the insinuations raised against him (Sango) were false and a disservice to him,” he stated.


Useni, who was flanked by his running mate, Mr James Dalok, described PDP as a big family devoid of any form of division and ready to reclaim its stolen mandate at the Court of Appeal.


“Our appeal is coming up on November 22, with great and strong belief that we shall emerge victorious. “But no matter the outcome of the appeal, we shall end up at the Supreme Court because I will never give up the fight.


“I am a dogged fighter, and never give up. That’s why I attended all the sittings at the Election Petition Tribunal to the end. “What I want from you people is your continuous prayers for God to help us reclaim our stolen mandate,” Useni said.
