Well, every dog has its day, you know. This could be a refreshing change. For once, Arsenal would have to work to be recognised in this season's champions' league group stage. No question about that, Arsene Wenger must be fretting! And David Moyes? Well... In GROUP A, Manchester United would start the post-Ferguson era with a sticky group stage!! Shakhtar Donetsk is a very dangerous team. But having lost Willian to Anzhi and Chelsea, Fernadinho to Manchester City and Milahahhhak (ok, no shame in my inability to spell the long name) to Borussia Dortmund, maybe they are not the team they used to be. That then means Bayer Leverkusen, who have started so well in the Bundesliga, could pose a greater threat. But what of a very vibrant Real Sociedad? Fact is, if Manchester United do not treat this with the seriousness it deserves, then Moyes could be in trouble. For me, Manchester United and Leverkusen could make it to the next stage. In GROUP B, Carlo Ancelotti and his £100 million winger would have to get through Gianluigi Buffon and a compact Juventus team, a task which seems tough. He would also do well to know his former darlings from Turin have a very strong team, ready to pounce. Galatasaray would be waiting on the wings, should any of the two mess up, but Fatih Terim is experienced enough to know it would not be possible. All they have to do is struggle with FC Copenhagen for a place in the Europa League. Real Madrid and Juve to qualify, for me. In GROUP C, Benfica and Paris St Germain (PSG) must be happy. They can expect to wipe the floor with Olympiakos and Anderlecht. That is a dangerous thing to say, but who cares? PSG and Benfica to make it to the next round, I am sure! In GROUP D, FC Hollywood, that German team everyone loves to hate, would not be the centre of attraction. Manchester City would be. For once, they have a relatively easy group. CSKA Moscow and Viktoria Plzen are not teams to set pulses racing. I expect Bayern Munich to top the group, with Man City joining them. That would give everyone the opportunity to praise Manuel Pellegrini for getting City out of the group, and cuss out poor old Roberto Mancini for being bad. But even Mancini's sky blue scarf would tell us they were always in tough groups all year. Bottom-line, Bayern and City to qualify. Chelsea have 'the happy one' back, and they would surely be happy with the way GROUP E has panned out. They have a tough task, I'm sure Mourinho would say, against an injury-ravaged, badly managed Schalke 04. And he may have a point. If this German team can do away with team gaffer Jens Keller, who does not inspire confidence, then they can give Chelsea a fight. But I cannot see anything but Chelsea topping this group. FC Basel and Steaua Bucuresti make up this mismatch. I expect Chelsea and Schalke to make it. Simple. In GROUP F, Arsenal would be in an awkward situation. First, they have always been in easy groups. Then again, they have always qualified without a fight. Well, things have changed. They are in arguably the toughest group in this season's group stage. Marseille of France could be tough. That is the fact. But then Napoli, managed by a rejuvenated Rafa 'rant' Benitez, are dangerous. No wonder a certain Gonzalo Higuain elected to join a dwindling Italian league, and not the gunners. But if Arsenal can beat these teams, then wait for the German juggernauts Borussia Dortmund. They are here, guys. Now Arsenal would have to worry. I can say they are inexperienced here, no kidding. For me, Dortmund could and should make it. Arsenal would battle it out with Benitez and his rants. But if any of these people joke even for a second, FC Marseille would be waiting! That is how tough it is. In GROUP G, FC Porto have once again been drawn in an easy group. Just like Arsenal, they always are. But wait a minute. Would you call an Atletico Madrid team, with a rampant Diego Costa and David Villa easy? You must be kidding me. And who would say a certain wealthy Russian club, Zenit St Petersbough, which boasts of Brazilian play-to-the-gallery striker, Hulk, is easy?? Now, that means I pity potential whipping boys Austria Vienna. However you look at it, I expect Atleti to qualify. Who joins them, between Porto and Zenit, we would wait to see. In GROUP H, we see a group that promises a lot but would give so little. FC Barcelona have played AC Milan a thousand times in recent seasons. Now, we are bored of these repetitive tortures. Ajax do not possess the boldness to take advantage while Celtic would just make up the numbers. For me, this is just the weakest group...the most predictable, you may say. Barcelona and Milan to qualify. Let the games begin! |
;DThis interesting summer transfer saga is finally coming †☺ an end.... Hala Madrid |
Gareth Bale is set to earn €10 million a year after tax at Real Madrid, making him the club’s biggest earner alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka, Spanish newspaper Marca has reported. • Marcotti: How do you value Bale? • Atkins: Can Lamela replace Bale? • Crace: Team effort topples Tbilisi On Friday, the Madrid paper’s front page announced that a €99 million deal to bring Bale from Tottenham had finally been completed. Inside, a report was headlined ‘Just needs a signature’ and claimed it was a “question of hours” before the Wales international put pen to paper on a six-year contract at the Bernabeu. That deal will put him on more money than players including World Cup winners Sergio Ramos, Iker Casillas and Xabi Alonso, and established internationals such as Germany’s Mesut Ozil and France’s Karim Benzema. Earlier this month, AS reported that Ozil and Benzema were unimpressed at being pushed down the salary scale at the club and claimed Ronaldo did not like the idea of Bale replacing him as the world's most expensive player. Madrid have offered Ronaldo a new contract that would increase his earnings to €18 million a year after tax, although the Portugal captain and his agent Jorge Mendes have reportedly not yet responded to the offer. Talk of the Bale deal, and the huge figures involved, surrounded Thursday’s Trofeo Bernabeu exhibition game, where the guest of honour was former Madrid great Raul Gonzalez, who played 45 minutes for Madrid and the other 45 for his current side, Qatari club Al Sadd. While no Los Blancos figure was willing to go on the record about Bale, Raul joked about the size of the transfer when he spoke to AS in the mixed zone. “If the Bale thing is not done, I would cost much less,” the 36-year-old said, proposing in jest that he could return to play for Madrid. The response to the deal in Catalonia has, unsurprisingly, been more sceptical. Mundo Deportivo asked its readers on Friday: “Is this man worth €109 million?” The Barcelona-supporting paper took that headline from Italy’s La Gazzetta dello Sport, to show that others in Europe are questioning why Madrid are prepared to pay so much, particularly in times of economic hardship. Meanwhile Sport claimed Chelsea’s move to hijack Tottenham’s deal for Willian was a move by current Blues coach Jose Mourinho to ensure that his former team Madrid missed out on Bale. http://m.espn.go.com/soccer/story?storyId=1531209 |

Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova has said he expects Lionel Messi to be available for the home game against Celta Vigo on Saturday despite the attacker having been absent from training on Friday to attend the birth of his first child. Vilanova confirmed Messi had missed training as the Catalan papers reported that he had accompanied his partner to the private clinic near the Camp Nou where she was to give birth to their son, who is to be named Thiago. "Messi did not come to training as he had permission to be absent," Vilanova said. "In principle, he will be available tomorrow. "It is a personal matter, for his family to talk about. If everything is fine, he will play. It is normal for him not to train on such an important day." Vilanova played for Celta for three seasons in the early 1990s, scoring one goal in 29 games. He said he had enjoyed his time with the Galicians and was looking forward to Saturday's game against their current side, who play in an attractive style under current coach Paco Herrera. "I have good memories, as in Vigo they treated me well," he said. "I would have liked to have played more, but I gave everything I could. "[The current team] try to play good football. We prefer playing against teams who play expansively and attack us. Celta are one of them - better for the spectator." The coach dismissed recent rumours that Alexis Sanchez or David Villa could leave the club in January, for Tottenham and Juventus respectively, and said he was happy with Sanchez, signed from Udinese for €37 million in 2011, despite his return of only one goal in 12 appearances this season. "Nobody will leave in January," he said. "We have six attackers who give us different things, and we want to keep them all. "I am satisfied with Alexis and I do not think he is lacking confidence. If he does not perform as well as he can, that is also my fault. I hope he scores so that people will stop monitoring him so closely." Barca confirmed that defenders Gerard Pique and Carles Puyol had not yet returned to full training with their team-mates, meaning that one of Sergio Busquets, Alex Song or Marc Barta is likely to accompany Javier Mascherano in central defence on Saturday. Vilanova said, however, that he expected Pique - who has not played since injuring an ankle against Spartak Moscow on September 19 - to be back sooner rather than later. "Pique has been training a few days at a higher level," he said. "He is improving each day. It is a question of days before he will be back with us. It is important to have him back. He helps us play the ball out from the back and at set-pieces." http://m.espn.go.com/soccer/story?storyId=1211365&leagueTag=ESP.1&lang=EN |
