PoliticsRe: Insecurity: Seven Kwara LGs Order Closure Of Cattle Markets by Oxb90:
Boko Haram has been labelled as bandits by Nigerian security operatives, the government, and various media outlets.

States that have been peaceful in the past have since then witnessed an alarming level of insecurity.

However until Nigeria and its citizens recognise them as terrorists, their influence will continue to spread across states, leading to greater chaos.

If the security forces have successfully maintained relative peace in the Southeast, what is preventing them from achieving the same peace in the North and Middle Belt?

Or is there something that someone is not telling us?

Foreign AffairsRe: Belgium To Recognize 'Palestine', Impose Sanctions On Israel Over Gaza by Oxb90: 5:56am On Sep 02, 2025
Kuginzi:
Belgian Foreign Minister announces his country will recognize “Palestine” and impose sanctions on Israel over its actions in Gaza. The move includes sanctions on Israeli “settlements” and support for a two-state solution.

Belgium has announced its decision to recognize a Palestinian state and impose firm sanctions on Israel in response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Among the 12 national sanctions implemented by Belgium are restrictions on the importation of goods from Israeli communities in Judea and Samaria, the suspension of public procurement with Israeli companies, and a reduction in consular services to Belgians living in illegal settlements. Additionally, the government has taken steps to block several extremists, including Israeli ministers and violent “settlers”, from entering the country, labeling them "persona non grata."

Prevot also confirmed that Belgium would support measures at the European Union level to suspend collaborations with Israel, including the suspension of the EU-Israel association agreement, research programs, and technical cooperation.

Further, Belgium will officially recognize “Palestine” as a state, in line with the joint initiative of France and Saudi Arabia, who have announced their intention to recognize “Palestine” at the UN General Assembly later this month. "This gesture is a clear condemnation of Israel’s expansionist policies, including its settlement programs and military occupations," Prevot stated.
The move was announced by Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot in a post on Monday night. Prevot condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza, arguing they violate international law and obligations to prevent genocide.

"The humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached catastrophic proportions. Israel's actions, violating international law and its responsibilities, have forced us to take decisive steps to pressure the Israeli government and the Hamas terrorists," wrote Prevot. He emphasized that the sanctions were not directed at the Israeli people, but aimed at holding the Israeli government accountable and ensuring that international and humanitarian law are respected.

He wrote that the recognition will take place after the formal release of all hostages by Hamas and when Hamas no longer maintains governance over Palestinian Arab territories. Belgium also reaffirmed its commitment to support the reconstruction of “Palestine” and intensify efforts against antisemitism, mobilizing security services and Jewish community representatives.

Belgium was among 26 countries that issued a joint statement in July, demanding an immediate end to the war in Gaza, expressing alarm over the worsening humanitarian situation and accusing Israel of imposing unacceptable restrictions on aid.

Also in July, Belgian authorities arrested two Israeli citizens attending the Tomorrowland music festival in the country and interrogated them on suspicion of war crimes in Gaza.

The arrest followed a report submitted by the Hind Rijab Foundation, which works to prosecute IDF soldiers around the world.

The current situation is quite concerning.

Had the ruling favoured certain interests, we likely would have observed a swift implementation of the decision.

Instead, it appears there is a selective adherence to rulings.

Nigeria is facing unprecedented challenges within the Senate and the National Assembly.

This is not surprising, as many members currently serving are former state governors who seemingly operate with a degree of impunity, often placing themselves above the courts and the constitution.

Let me start with a truth that many of us who follow Nigerian political discourse already know: I do not always agree with Rufai Oseni’s approach on Arise TV. In fact, I strongly believe that he displays a clear bias against the All Progressives Congress (APC). His tone, questions, and commentary often seem to lean in one direction, and that’s fair criticism in any open society.

However, where I draw the line — and where I believe many critics miss the point — is in questioning Rufai’s right to be called a journalist simply because he studied Animal Anatomy at the university. That argument is both shallow and irrelevant in today’s media ecosystem.

Journalism is not exclusively defined by what you studied in school. Many of the world’s most respected journalists came from non-journalism backgrounds — law, history, engineering, and yes, even the sciences. What matters is integrity, curiosity, commitment to truth, and the courage to ask tough questions. Rufai, for all his imperfections, checks these boxes far more often than many who hold degrees in Mass Communication but practice access journalism.

Now let’s address another criticism — his use of the phrase “I put it to you.” Some argue that it’s confrontational or theatrical. But again, this is ignorance at work. That phrase is a classic journalistic tool used to confront interviewees with direct accountability. It’s not an insult; it’s a technique. It exists in the vocabulary of tough interviews — from BBC’s HardTalk to CNN’s Amanpour. It forces clarity. It demands honesty. And Rufai uses it effectively, especially when public figures try to evade straight answers.

As frustrating as Rufai might be — and he can be frustrating — one thing is sure: his fiercest critics would be the first to praise him if he turned his sharp questions toward their political enemies. And that’s the irony. They don’t hate him because he’s unprofessional; they dislike him because he’s not on their side.

Truth be told, in a media landscape where many journalists behave like praise-singers, Rufai Oseni stands out because he dares to challenge power — regardless of who holds it. That may be inconvenient, but it is journalism in its purest form.

So, ask yourself: is it better to have a journalist who studied Animal Anatomy but questions power — or a communications graduate who dances around the truth?
