PoliticsS-east APC Demands Reps Speakership by Pamatips(op): 3:56am On Mar 26, 2019
ABUJA—THE South East, All Progressives Congress, APC, Youths Consultative Forum, has called on the leadership of the party to zone the position of speaker to the zone. APC National Coordinator of South East APC youths group, Romanus Oguleme told journalists in Abuja that the zone has credible and ranking members of the party in the National Assembly to head any of the two chambers. He further stated that the zone should not be schemed out in the National Assembly leadership as was experienced in 2015, adding that zoning the speakership to the southeast was in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s promise of inclusive government.

The group argued that the excuse in 2015 that South East APC didn’t have ranking members to be considered for positions of principal officers cannot be used again as the region has two returning members in the House. According to Oguleme, “We categorically state that the South-East has two ranking members of the APC and these two: chairman, House Committee on Healthcare Services, Chike Okafor and chairperson, House Committee on Aviation, Nkeiru Onyejeocha are eminently qualified to run for Speaker or to be appointed as principal officers. Buhari’s comment on supplementary elections shows he rigged – PDP “If the performance of both members in the 8th Assembly should be used as criteria, they have proven themselves capable of handling delicate and sensitive assignments.

“The Okafor-led Healthecare Services Committee is effectively performing its oversight functions in the health sector, with many Nigerians still remembering the highly publicised probe into the alleged N351 billion fraud in the NHIS as well as stakeholders’ commendation of the House sub-committee of Primary Healthcare Care revitalisation. Onyejeocha performed creditably well in leading her committee in ensuring a good standard of efficiency in the aviation sector.” PDP’ll produce next Speaker —Ebonyi Rep In a related development, member representing Ezza North /Ishielu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Anayo Nwonu yesterday expressed optimism that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, will produce the next Speaker of the House of Representatives. Nwonu who addressed journalists during the last rerun of the State Assembly election in his constituency explained that PDP being minority in the 9th Assembly will not affect legislative processes . He said: “National politics and legislative politics are quite different. The fact that we reduced in number will not really affect any legislative process in the green chambers. For now, we are already shopping for who will become the next speaker and I know Peoples Democratic Party PDP is the main people to decide who will be the speaker of the 9th Assembly. “In fact, let me tell you, as we are being sworn in, PDP will definitely gain back its number.”

PoliticsProbe Okorocha, Stakeholders Urge Ihedioha by Pamatips(op): 5:27pm On Mar 25, 2019
FIVE socio-political organizations under the umbrella of Imo Salvation Forum, ISF, have urged Imo Governor-elect, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, to probe Governor Rochas Okorocha’s administration when he takes over. Ihedioha and Okorocha The appeal is one major demands of some Imo people in a 10-point document, the groups jointly submitted to Ihedioha According to a communiqué by the National Coordinator of the Forum, Chief Finbar Chidubem, who is also the president-general of Imo Prosperity Network,IPN, the stakeholders said the 10-point document is to set agenda for the in-coming governor so that he would be properly guided on the major aspirations of the people that gave him mandate.

Other groups in the forum are Imo Sons and Daughters (ISD), Imo Peoples’ Congress for Development (IPCD), Imo Watchdogs for Transparency and Good Governance (IWTGG) and Women of Imo for Community Development (WICD). They said: “Having succeeded in overthrowing the evil rule, it is now time to take stock of what happened in the state in the past eight years which led to the brutalization of our people physically, mentally and psychologically. This is because, not doing so would amount to the greatest disservice to Imo people,” the communiqué stated. 10 Imo governorship candidates’ hails INEC over polls “We have gone round all the communities in Imo State. What everybody in Imo is demanding first and foremost is that Rochas be made to account to the people how he used the hundreds of billions of Naira that was entrusted to him on the behalf of our people for eight years. Why he spent billions of public funds to build useless statues of even criminals and outlaws in Owerri while the people suffered hunger and deprivation. Imo people want to know who Rochas allocated the hundreds of landed properties he revoked from authentic owners in and around Owerri,” the communiqué said.

Apart from probing the out-going governor, the Forum listed other important matters that the in-coming governor should address to include reform of the state’s civil service, review of the system of salary payment, nepotism in appointment of public office holders, land allocation/acquisition in the state as well as accountability in award of contracts, among others. How to make democracy work in Nigeria – Gowon, Kukah, Weah, Utomi “In our submission to the in-coming governor, we drew his attention to the fact that Imo State public service is in shambles. Today there is no laid down rules governing issues like recruitment, dismissal, staff placement, promotion, leave matters, everything. There is therefore the need to reform the public service in Imo and bring sanity to the system. We also drew the attention of the Governor-elect to the need to review the huge salary deficit and the irrationality of workers welfare in the state.”

PoliticsIgnorance Reason For Crises In Nigeria, Says Buhari by Pamatips(op): 2:22am On Mar 24, 2019
PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has attributed the crises in the country to what he referred to as “ignorance.” To this end,he has vowed to tackle the menace headlong by making education affordable to all Nigerians in his second term of office. The president, who stated this, Saturday,in his speech delivered at the graduation ceremony of the National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN,said the challenges of insecurity and violence crises in the country could be avoided through functional mass education. In the speech he delivered through his representative and the Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission,NUC, Mr Victor Onuoha, at the NOUN’s 8th convocation ceremony in Abuja, where about 20,799 students with a total of 103 of them bagging First Class, graduated, the president insisted that education was the key to social, economic, political and religious development.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria is more than ever before, committed to making education affordable through the open and distance learning system. “In this connection, therefore, a national policy on education has provided for life-long learning that transcends all barriers through open and distance learning,”he said. I never said I graduated with first class from UNN – Kachikwu He said as a government, necessary funding would be deployed through budgetary allocations, Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) intervention and Needs Assessment funding to shore up the provision of quality tertiary education so as to guarantee access for the teeming youths in the country. The President added that the open and distance learning would be further strengthened to take the lead in this desired direction of the government. Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Abdalla Adamu, speaking at the convocation ceremony, said the number of graduands was the highest single graduation of students in Nigeria. Mr Bala Salihu Magaji, who bagged First Class in Islamic Studies, emerged the overall best graduating student out of the 15,642 undergraduate graduands and won the University coveted prize for 2019.

The number of postgraduates is 5,157. Adamu said: “It is worthy of note that last year, we graduated 14,769. The massive increase in the number of graduands this year is a clear indication of increasing confidence reposed by Nigerians on the efficacy of Open Distance Learning as an enabler,”. He added that the student population which stands at over 500,000 would remain grateful to President Muhammadu Buhari, for proving funding support in order to expand access to the University. He said Buhari is the Visitor to the University occupies an exalted status in NOUN that goes beyond the leadership of the country; “for it was you who created this campus that we holding our convocation in, and it was you who commissioned it on 16th January 2016 Your gracious assent to the amendment of the NOUN (Amendment) Act in December 2018, has indeed opened more doors for thousands of youths in Nigeria to have greater confidence in NOUN. “Prior to the assent to NOUN Amendment Act, there were misconceptions that the University offers part-time courses, or is a correspondence institution. “This constituted a barrier to all our young graduates who are aged less than 30 and who are eager to serve their fatherland in the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC). I never said I graduated with first class from UNN – Kachikwu “This conception also serves as a barrier to our Law graduates who have undergone a course of instruction in our Law degree, which was fully accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to get admitted to the Nigerian Law School where they can be further trained as Barristers at Law,” he said. The Vice-Chancellor further revealed that all the 18 programmes submitted to NUC, have all received accreditation, adding that while 15 had full accreditation, only three had interim accreditation. Pro-Chancellor of NOUN and former Executive of National Universities Commission, Prof. Peter Okebukola, in his address, revealed that NOUN now has enrollment in excess of 500,000 while also aiming for the one million marks by 2025 with quality graduates as the averred goal. He charged the graduating students to be good ambassadors of NOUN having been well prepared in learning and character to contribute their quota to the development of the society. Okebukola expressed optimism that very soon the Council of Legal Education would begin to admit NOUN graduates to the Nigerian Law School, saying “show them the stuff you are made of by bagging at least 50% of the First Class awarded at the end of your training.”
