Hybrid Ogbono Tree (Irvingia wombulu) by Agricare Tropical Resources

2. Ogbono tree plantation remains one of the most lucrative/profitable economic trees. Ogbono seeds are used to prepare both local and international delicacy. Most of Africa cuisine contain Ogbono seed.

3. Researchers have established that the seeds have many health benefits. The part plants, especially the seeds are rich in fats, protein, carbs, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants. In addition, the seeds are effective against obesity, GI problems, diabetes, and high cholesterol.


4. The demand is always more than supply. This can be attributed to geographic selection of Ogbono trees (it doesn't grow in every region). It only thrives in West Africa and South East Asia.

Financial Analysis

Ogbono is a giant tree that can grow up to 50 feets tall with long life span. It is also 3 generational threes (you reap the profit, your children and grand children will also enjoy the benefits).

One stand of hybrid Ogbono tree can give a farmer average 3 to 4 50kg bags yearly. A 50kg bag of Ogbono contain 17 custard buckets (which cost N13,000 to N14,000 per bucket). A 50kg bag of dried Ogbono seed (Irvingia gabonensis)cost between N220,000 to N250,000 currently.

For instance, if the grower has 50 stands of well fruiting Ogbono tree, he will be harvesting average of 150 bags of 50kg of Ogbono seeds (3 bags per tree) yearly.

150 bags × N220,000 = N33,000,000 million.

Therefore, have you seen how the grower will be making a profit of 33 million naira yearly by have 50 stands of well fruiting ado Ogbono trees.

The interesting thing about Ogbono tree is that cost of maintenance is almost zero when you compare it with oil palm tree. And it is less labour intensive unlike other economic trees.

It is economically wise to plant Ogbono seedlings today.
