Faith without work is one of the most misinterpreted portion/quote of the Bible.

This easily happens when only a verse is jacked out from the scripture. The context will be missing with such reading and the result will be misinterpretation. So many use that verse to teach morality (not bad) but the verse was about love for one another. God is love. So if you say you have faith, the love is expected to flow from you. If you don't love, then you don't have faith. Funny this is that many who use the verse to teach morality don't actually love. They focus on morality and leave out the true message of the passage they extracted the verse from.

Always read scripture in context. Context may be a paragraph, a whole chapter and sometimes a whole book of the Bible.

James 2 (NIV)
Faith and Deeds
14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

18 But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.”

Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds. 19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.

There is a corroboration of this by Jesus. Verse 14 of James 2 asks if faith without deeds (show of love) can save? Look at what Jesus said in Matthew.

Matthew 25 (NIV)
41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

So if you say you have faith, it must show in your love work. The truth is, if you don't love, you don't really have faith.
