The Federal Government has announced that for the first time in many years, it has met the oil and gas sector revenue benchmark for 2025, after several years of struggle.

The cheering news by the spokesman of the Executive Chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Services Dr. Dare Adekanmbi was attributed to the sustained peace in the Niger Delta region, which he credited to the efforts of various security agencies and firms including the PINL, vested with the protection of the government investments.

This, he said contributed to increased national crude oil production.

Meze noted that the FIRS announcement underscores the strength and effectiveness of the collaboration/partnership that exists among the Stakeholders, “which can be attributed to consistent application of proven strategies viz: Safety measures for surveillance personnel timely salary payments, rapid dispute resolution within communities, amongst others.

“These combined efforts have resulted in reduced downtime and increased trust,”he said.

Speaking further, he announced some of the company’s achievements including interventions in an oil spill location in Yorla, Kpean community in Khana Local government area and bursting of illegal bunkering sites in Umubule and Oyigbo communities both in Rivers State.

Mezeh, used the medium to update the stakeholders on its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) packages for youths and women of the host communities.

He, however, reiterated PINL’s commitment to sustainable energy security in the country, calling for support from all stakeholders.

“We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to sustainable energy security, in full alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government. We have a shared responsibility to rescue our economy from further bleeding, and achieving this goal requires that all hands remain on deck.

“We want to emphasize that there must be collaboration between PINL and the communities. PINL has gone the extra mile by approving scholarships for the host communities, they have gone out to make sure their areas of operations benefit from their activities, let us make sure that in this task of securing the pipelines, we support them, don’t destroy their equipment,” he urged.

PoliticsRemittances From Nigerians Abroad Surpassed $20 Billion In 2024 by peekspot(op): 11:20am On Aug 16, 2025
Yusuf Tuggar, minister of foreign affairs, says Nigerians abroad contributed over $20 billion to the country’s economy in 2024.

Tuggar spoke in Abuja on Monday when he paid a working visit to Abike Dabiri-Erewa, chairperson of the Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM).

The minister commended Dabiri-Erewa for her leadership in championing the interests of Nigerians in the diaspora, describing their contributions as significant.

Tuggar said he was at the commission to reinforce the importance of aligning its work with President Bola Tinubu’s four Ds doctrine of diplomacy.

The minister listed the doctrines as development, demography, diaspora, and democracy.

According to him, for NIDCOM, the “diaspora” pillar is not just a component of the doctrine; it is the commission’s core mandate.

“Nigeria’s diaspora community is one of the most vibrant in the world—over 17 million Nigerians are spread across every continent,” he said.

“They are doctors, engineers, entrepreneurs, academics, athletes, creatives, and leaders in their fields. In 2024 alone, remittances from Nigerians abroad amounted to over $20 billion.

“This represents a vital lifeline to our economy and a testament to the enduring commitment of our diaspora to national development.”

The minister said beyond the figures, Nigerians abroad are also cultural ambassadors who project the nation’s rich heritage, innovation and resilience on the global stage.

“Their successes open doors for others, change perceptions, and build goodwill for Nigeria across borders,” he said.

“I urge NIDCOM to continue championing these wins and to deepen efforts to integrate the Nigerian diaspora more fully into the national economy.

“This means not only celebrating their achievements but also creating deliberate pathways for them to invest, innovate and contribute their skills to strategic national projects.”

Tuggar proposed that NiDCOM consider establishing dedicated programmes aimed at deepening the bond between Nigerians abroad and their ancestral homeland.

He said such initiatives should be designed to enhance their knowledge, appreciation and understanding of Nigeria’s history, culture, values and aspirations.

“In doing so, they will serve as compelling counter-narratives to the weaponised disinformation occasionally propagated by individuals who seek to distort our image for personal or political gain,” he said.

“Sustained engagement of this nature will ensure that our diaspora youth remain firmly connected to the heartbeat of the nation, proud of their heritage and committed to Nigeria’s progress, wherever in the world they may reside.”

Dabiri-Erewa commended Nigerians in the diaspora for bridging gaps in the country through notable investments, citing “the best stroke centre” in Imo and “the cancer hospital” in Lagos as significant examples.

She said the commission has established a diaspora data mapping to identify and analyse the characteristics, location, and contributions of Nigerians living outside the country.

The NiDCOM chair urged Nigerians in the diaspora to register at www.nidcom.ng.gov.

CrimeOndo: Fake Soldier, Serving Police Officer To Die By Hanging For Armed Robbery by peekspot(op): 10:03am On Aug 16, 2025
The Akure Division of the Ondo State High Court has sentenced a serving police officer, David Friday, and a self-acclaimed soldier, Innocent Victor, to death by hanging for multiple armed robbery offences in Idanre.

The duo faced a four-count charge of conspiracy, armed robbery, and impersonating security personnel.

Prosecution witnesses testified that on January 15, 2021, the men—one in a black police T-shirt and the other in military camouflage—used jack knives to rob victims at different locations in Idanre, seizing cash, a phone, and fuel.

They also assaulted victims and threatened them with a pistol.

Akinleye said both were armed with jack knives and were flashing the headlight of their TVS motorcycle at him.

He noted that men ransacked his vehicle, took N6,000 from him, and instructed him to fuel their motorcycle with 30 litres of petrol, which he did.

He later discovered that his Itel phone, valued at N8,500, was also missing.

Another prosecution witness, Mr Lanre Olowogbadegun said he was on night duty at Yaba Junction in Idanre that same night when he saw two men on a black TVS motorcycle one in a police T-shirt and the other in army camouflage.

Olowogbadegun, a security guard, added that the two men ordered him to drop his gun, but he refused.

“Shortly after, the men stopped an 18-seater bus, ordered the driver out, made him sit on the floor, and took all his money,” he told the court.

Olowogbadegun said the men beat the driver with jack knives and their fists, taking N5,000 from him. They offered him (Olowogbadegun) N2,000, but he declined.

“Around 4 a.m., the driver returned to ask if I knew the two men, and I confirmed that I did. Together, we went to the police station to report,” he added.

When invited by the Divisional Police Officer, the driver identified the man who had robbed him while wearing the police uniform.

The third prosecution witness, Adeyeye Sesan, a transporter, testified that he was returning home when he encountered the two men—one in military camouflage and the other dressed like a policeman.

He said the man in camouflage demanded N10,000, and when he refused, the man slapped him, dragged him out of his bus, and began to beat him.

The other man, in police uniform, joined in, using a pistol and sticks to assault him, according to Adeyeye.

He said they forcibly took N125,000 from his pocket and the proceeds of his work for the day. After robbing him, they dragged him back to his bus and injured his leg with a dagger, threatening to kill him with the pistol.

Ilesanmi Samuel, Police prosecutor in the case, told the court that investigations revealed Friday was a serving member of the Nigeria Police Force attached to Olofin Police Station, Idanre, while Victor’s claim of being a soldier was false, as confirmed by the Owena Cantonment in Akure.

According to Samuel, both men confessed to the crimes.

In his verdict, Justice Williams Rotimi Olamide held that the prosecution had successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

He, however, sentenced the defendants to death by hanging.

PoliticsRealities Nullify Marginalination Allegation, North-central Group To Opposition by peekspot(op): 11:35am On Aug 15, 2025
A socio-political group in the North-Central region operating under the aegis of The North-Central Agenda (TNA) has berated opposition leaders complaining of marginalisation of the north under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, insisting that the accusation was baseless and unfounded, as realities on the ground contradict allegation.

The group also challenged political leaders in the North-Central, especially the state governors, to judiciously make us of the increase in the revenue allocation to their states for the benefit of the poor and vulnerable in the zone.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja to herald the birth of the group, the chairperson of the group, Dr. Ene Ogbole said the organisation will ensure that some of the challenges facing the region, which include; unemployment, poor education, insecurity, drug addiction, kidnapping, and political thuggery, among others would receive attention in the efforts to promote and defend the interest of the zone, and the country in general.

Reacting to the allegation of marginalisation of the region, the group accused proponents of such allegation of being mischievous, partisan, and selfish.

According to the group: “You can not come from a region that has benefited the highest national budgetary allocation of 2024 and still say you have been marginalized.

“You can not come from a region that clearly has benefited in terms of equal representation in governance and say or claim to have been marginalized. You can not come from a region that benefits from almost 90 percent of national security expenditure and still claims to have been marginalized.

“Those who talk about marginalization or accuse Tinubu’s administration of marginalization are only doing that simply for selfish and mischievous political purposes. They are yet up to this day to bring out figures and facts of Bola Tinubu’s administration marginalisation.”

The TNA chairperson said the initiative became necessary in view of the fact that the people of the North Central zone, have in recent history, been subjected to unimaginable level of endless human agony and disaster, ranging from socio-economic, political, and worst of all, security crisis that have almost brought the region to her knees.

“It is heart-warming and reassuring to know that, while the prevailing challenges are resolute in ensuring that our region is reduced to the worst level of hardship and insecurity ever experienced in our political history, however, we are consoled by the surge in current national revenue, has presented leverages opportunities to all tiers of government to respond swiftly and adequately to the socio-economic, political and security needs of the North Central people and other regions of the country.

“Our intervention focuses on massive social advocacy to encourage all stakeholders, both within and outside government, from top to bottom on the use of available resources for the development of the zone.

“It is worthy of note to mention unequivocally that our group is working overtime to recreate and promote government /citizen partnerships through gradually restoring their hope and confidence in government policies, programs and reforms that are targeted at uplifting the well-being and living standard of the people also bearing in mind that the buy-in, participation and partnership of the electorate is sacrosanct if a government must succeed.

“We have been in the business of conscientizing our youths and women of existing government initiatives, policies and programmes that are targeted at uplifting the well-being and living standard of our people and by so doing bridging the gap between the government and her citizens.

“Furthermore, we are creating massive and unrelenting awareness on the concept of separation of powers and the constitutional mandate of the three tiers of government, the federal, state, and local government and the obligations of our citizens.

“Similarly, we wish to once again deploy this avenue to appeal to our political gladiators across party lines to immediately desist from heating up the polity in national interest, peace, decorum, and tranquillity to pave way for broad based national development. We advise that all hands should be on deck regardless of party affiliation as we struggle to surmount this phase of global economic meltdown that has grossly devastated all economies around the world. It is our duty to let politicians know that patriotism is not about seek for power at all cost, it is about supporting those in government whether we like them or not to achieve the ultimate goal of delivering the dividends of democracy the people especially the poor and the vulnerable.”

Throwing its weight behind the president over the recent emergence of Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, the group, urged opposition leaders to eschew bitterness and support President Tinubu’s administration for the betterment of the country.

“We deeply appreciate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) for appointing Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda as the National Chairman of the Ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). It is considered a step in the right direction as we are certain that the young professor will bring to bear contemporary ideas that will move the party forward in the right direction to be able to deliver the dividend of democracy to our people.”

PoliticsTake Advantage Of FG’s ₦200 Billion Funds, Minister Urges SE Entrepreneurs by peekspot(op): 11:25am On Aug 15, 2025
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has called on entrepreneurs in the Southeast to tap into the Federal Government’s ₦200 billion intervention funds to expand their businesses and promote locally made products.

Idris made the appeal during a town hall meeting at the Government House in Enugu weekend as part of the National Communication Team’s citizens’ engagement tour to explain the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He said the funds—comprising the Presidential Conditional Grant Scheme (PCGS), the FGN MSME Intervention Fund, and the FGN Manufacturing Sector Fund—were specially designed to support small businesses, boost manufacturing, and strengthen the country’s industrial base.

“Recognising the Southeast’s industrial strength, the government has created three key business funds totalling ₦200 billion. I urge entrepreneurs to take advantage of these funds and embrace the ‘Nigeria First’ policy that promotes patronage of locally made products,” Idris stated.

He said the FG’s delegation was in Enugu to connect directly with the people of the state on the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, whose goal is to bridge the communication gap between the government and the citizens, block the spread of misinformation and strengthen participatory democracy through open dialogue.

The Minister highlighted ongoing Federal Government projects in Enugu and by extension the Southeast the region, including the modernization of the Eastern Railway Corridor from Port Harcourt through Aba and Enugu to Maiduguri, the rehabilitation of over 1,000 primary healthcare centres, and the commissioning of a world-class oncology and cancer centre in Enugu.

“Today, we went to see all the roads linking Enugu to other parts of the Southeast, Southsouth and the North; we went to see the 350 meters flyover bridge at Eke Obinagu and all the projects which the Bola Tinubu led federal government is doing in Enugu and in deed Southeast.

“The flyover bridge at Eke Obinagu is significant because it connects Enugu to Ebonyi state, to Akwa Ibom, Cross River and even to the Cameroon. The bridge is almost being completed by President Bola Tinubu and we know it is what he promised and very soon the people of this state and their neighbours will benefit from the project upon completion,”
he said.

He also commended Governor Peter Mbah for his administration’s collaboration with the Federal Government to deliver infrastructure and other development projects in Enugu State.

Idris noted that Enugu and Imo were among 11 states granted regulatory autonomy to oversee their electricity markets under the new Electricity Act, urging other South-East states to follow suit.

According to him, economic indicators such as food prices and foreign exchange rates are stabilizing, with global rating agencies optimistic about Nigeria’s growth towards a $1 trillion economy by 2030.

The minister assured that while challenges remain, President Tinubu’s reforms would yield clearer benefits by the end of his first term, with the Southeast positioned as a key player in the nation’s economic transformation.

Earlier when the minister led his high-powered federal government media delegation to pay a courtesy visit on Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State at the state government house, he assured that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to the development of Enugu State and the entire Southeast region.

According to him, the President’s reforms, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy, have freed up resources for both the federal and state governments to invest in critical infrastructure and social services.

“Governors across the country, including here in Enugu, are taking advantage of these additional resources to deliver impactful projects. We have seen the work Governor Peter Mbah is doing in education, infrastructure, security, and culture, and this is exactly what President Tinubu envisioned,” Idris said.

The minister commended Governor Mbah for sustaining and expanding development programmes, noting that the synergy between the federal and state governments is key to achieving lasting prosperity.

He disclosed that the delegation – comprising top officials from the National Orientation Agency, NTA, FRCN, NBC, and the Voice of Nigeria – would inspect projects in the state before holding an interactive session with residents to receive feedback on federal government policies.

Responding, Governor Mbah attributed the financing of numerous infrastructure projects embarked by the state government to the oil subsidy removal policy of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration.

He said: “For us in Enugu, we are able to accomplish all we promised our people during the campaign, thanks to the bold decision taken by President Bola Tinubu, which has freed up resources needed to execute humongous capital projects,” said Governor, while listing ongoing projects in the state, which include the construction of 7,000 classrooms, 3,300 hospital beds and 2,000-hectare of 260 farm estates across the 260 wards of the state.

Governor Mbah also pledged more support for the policies of the federal government, saying they are in the best interest of the people of the state.

At the town hall meeting were traditional rulers, religious leaders, community leaders, market leaders, youth leaders and leaders from the various political parties in the state.

PoliticsTinubu’s Appointment Of New FFS Boss Based On Merit – Tunji-Ojo by peekspot(op): 9:47pm On Aug 14, 2025
Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has said that President Bola Tinubu’s appointment of Olumode Adeyemi as the new Controller General of the Federal Fire Service (FFS) was based on competence and capacity, not personal ties.

Speaking Thursday in Abuja during Adeyemi’s decoration ceremony, Tunji-Ojo described the role as “an opportunity only a few ever get” and urged the new CG to deliver results that will stand the test of time.

The minister said the president does not need to have personal ties with anyone before doing the needful insofar as such persons meet the requirements for appointment.

“The President did not look at who you are or whose son you are, but at your capability. He has invested his trust in you. When you look back years from now, make sure you can say you served well,” the Minister charged.

He cautioned Adeyemi to brace for resistance, stressing that leadership is about conviction and courage, not popularity.

“You will have my full support, but don’t expect 100 percent support from everyone. If there is no disagreement in the system, corruption is likely in charge,” he warned.

Tunji-Ojo described the Fire Service as one of Nigeria’s most impactful agencies, stressing that every life lost in a fire incident should be seen as a failure by the agency.

He revealed that the National Assembly is already working on a new Fire Service Act to boost rescue operations and enhance efficiency.

“Be the leader, not the led. Charge yourself, stay focused, and never succumb to pressure to please everyone. As you do your job, God will give you strength,” he told Adeyemi.

Adeyemi on his part pledged unwavering loyalty to President Tinubu and vowed to lead the Service with integrity, diligence and purposeful leadership.

Adeyemi expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for entrusting him with the responsibility of heading the nation’s fire and rescue agency, describing the appointment as a “great honour” he does not take lightly.

“I pledge my total loyalty and unwavering commitment to justifying this confidence through diligent service, integrity, and purposeful leadership,” he said.

The new FFS boss also commended the minister for his visionary and transformational leadership, noting that the his guidance and support had created the right environment for growth, reform and operational excellence in the Service.

Adeyemi thanked the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani, and the Secretary of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board CDCFIB, Major General Abdulmalik Jibrin (retd), for their roles in facilitating his promotion.

He promised to work with all stakeholders to transform the FFS into “a model of efficiency, discipline, and public trust,” while acknowledging the commitment of officers and personnel across the ranks, whom he described as “the backbone of our success.”

The ceremony marked Adeyemi’s formal takeover from former CG, Engr. Abdulganiyu Kaji.

PoliticsGovernor Alia, Benue Lawmakers In Showdown by peekspot(op): 10:25am On Aug 14, 2025
]The cordial relationship between Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia and members of the State House of Assembly appears to have broken down.

The lawmakers declined his request to screen nominees for commissioner positions.

The Assembly rejected a correspondence from the governor seeking the screening and confirmation of the nominees for the state executive council.

The decision was taken during plenary, presided over by Speaker Hyacinth Aondona Dajoh.

It followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by Shimapever Jiji.

Jiji informed members that the governor had consistently failed to honour resolutions of the House and had treated legislators with total disregard.

Seconding the motion, Thomas Dugeri said the governor had yet to address pressing concerns previously raised by the Assembly.

He alleged that he had “no respect for the hallowed chamber.”

Lawmakers who spoke on the matter stressed that their decision was not intended to stall governance but to compel the executive to respect legislative independence and honour existing agreements.

They maintained that they were not opposed to screening commissioners, but insisted that the governor must first comply with earlier resolutions.

The House demanded that the governor immediately provide official vehicles to affected members.

They asked him to enforce suspension notices issued to the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), the Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Council, and the Executive Secretary of the Benue State Sports Lottery and Marketing Board.

The Assembly had resolved to suspend the SUBEB Chairman over alleged administrative ineptitude.

“Until the governor complies with these demands, the House will not honour or entertain any correspondence from the executive arm,” the lawmakers resolved.

Governor Alia, however, dismissed the perceived face-off, describing it as a mere breakdown in communication.

While, in Delta State, a vehicle with Registration Number AG 02 KWR loaded with 31 units of 25 litres jerricans filled with stolen Automotive Gasoline Oil was intercepted at Omuseti junction along Kwale to Ozoro road in Ndokwa West LGA.”

“The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 6 Division, NA, Major-General Emmanuel Eric Emekah, while appreciating informants for their support, stated that when illegal products are discovered due diligence is taken to verify the authenticity of the product or otherwise.

“However, where the product is discovered to be genuine it is usually handed over to the owner in line with the mandate of Operation DELTA SAFE.

“The GOC further stressed that perpetrators of economic sabotage, arrested by the troops are handed over to the appropriate agency for prosecution”, the statement said.

PoliticsNAF Kills Over 400 Bandits In Zamfara Forest Air Raid by peekspot(op): 1:22pm On Aug 12, 2025
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), under the Operation Fasan Yamma, has neutralised several armed bandits in Zamfara state during coordinated air and ground assaults on Makakkari Forest.

NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said this in a statement Monday in Abuja.

He said Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance had confirmed movements of over 400 bandits planning to invade a farming community.

According to him, the operation on Sunday involved precision airstrikes and ground assaults, killing several notorious kingpins and scores of their fighters.

Ejodame said the synergy between the air and land components made the operation exceptional.

“The Nigerian Air Force under Operation FASAN YAMMA, on 10 August 2025, recorded another major victory against armed bandits in Zamfara State, neutralising several terrorists in a coordinated air and ground assault on Makakkari Forest.

“Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance had confirmed movements of over 400 bandits, planning to invade a farming community.

“The operation involved precision airstrikes and ground assaults, resulting in the deaths of several notorious kingpins and scores of their foot soldiers.

“The synergy between air and land components made the operation exceptional,” the statement said.

The attack was a response to several activities of the criminal elements, including banditry, kidnapping and related others in the last one month.

Bukkuyum’s Adabka village was, on Friday, the scene of a bandit attack that saw residents kidnapped and 13 security personnel killed.

Nigeria’s banditry crisis originated in conflict over land and water rights between herders and farmers, but has morphed into organised crime, with gangs preying on rural communities that have long had little or no government presence.

Cattle rustling and kidnapping have become huge money-making ventures in the largely impoverished countryside.

Groups also levy taxes on farmers and artisanal miners.

The conflict is worsening a malnutrition crisis in the northwest as attacks drive people away from their farms, in a situation that has been complicated by climate change and western aid cuts.

Despite military deployment to fight the criminal gangs since 2015 and the creation of a militia force by the Zamfara state government two years ago, the violence has persisted.

In July, Nigerian troops killed at least 95 members of an armed gang in a shootout and air strikes in the northwest state of Niger.

Bandits, who are primarily motivated by money, have also increased their cooperation with Nigeria’s jihadist groups, who are waging a separate, 16-year-old armed insurrection in the northeast.

The estates are predominantly located in the Eti-Osa, Ajah, Ibeju-Lekki, and Epe areas.

The state has also handed the concerned parties a 21-day ultimatum to process their layout approvals.

According to Oluwole Sotire, the permanent secretary of the office of physical planning, the estates are deemed illegal due to failure to obtain layout approvals from the ministry of physical planning and urban development.

He said the estates compromised the sustainable development agenda of the Lagos state government.

Sotire said the owners of the estates have been allotted a window to submit the necessary documents to his office for processing.

He said this exercise is a routine function of the ministry, adding that it is in line with its mandate to regulate the development of public and private estates in Lagos.

Politics'Allow Him To Finish What He Started’ — Gbaja Asks Northern Ex-lawmakers To Back by peekspot(op): 11:05am On Aug 03, 2025
Femi Gbajabiamila, chief of staff to the president, has rallied northern former legislators to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.

Speaking on Friday during a dialogue session of the northern caucus of the National Forum of Former Legislators in Abuja, the former speaker of the house of representatives urged political leaders from the north to back Tinubu.

Gbajabiamila described Tinubu as a leader whose track record and dedication to national unity merit unwavering support.

He said Nigeria’s progress depends on unity, continuity, and respect for political agreements.

“President Tinubu is not just a southern leader; he is a national leader who has carried every region along,” Gbajabiamila said.

He highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects across the north, including road networks, rail expansions, and agricultural revitalisation efforts, as evidence of the administration’s commitment to equitable development.

“From critical infrastructure to policy reforms, the north is benefitting from a government that believes in equity and shared prosperity,” he said.

“We are laying solid foundations today, and it is only right that the president is allowed to finish what he started.”

Following the meeting, PUNCH reports that the northern caucus endorsed a southern presidency and Tinubu’s re-election.

In a communiqué signed by Rufai Chanchangi and Atiwurcha Albert, the caucus coordinator and secretary, respectively, the group affirmed their commitment to power rotation between the north and south.

“As partners in nation-building, we subscribe to issues that unite us as a people for the peace and progress of our nation, Nigeria,” the statement reads.

“We align with the unifying foundation of our country, which relates to the rotation of power between the North and South. We advocate that the South be allowed to complete its tenure.”

PoliticsINEC Derecognises Abure-Led Labour Party by peekspot(op): 10:04am On Aug 03, 2025
In a decisive move seen as a derecognition of Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP), the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has invalidated the list of all the candidates submitted by the faction, as well as all the candidates of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for the nationwide by-elections scheduled for August 16, 2025, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) council elections.

Meanwhile, Abure’s faction has described INEC’s action as unlawful and an abuse of power.

But in a swift reaction, the Senator Nenadi Usman-led faction of the party described the decision of INEC as a welcome development, saying it was in line with the Supreme Court’s judgment of April 4, 2025.

THISDAY gathered that the final list of candidates published by INEC excluded all the candidates presented by Abure and his factional National Working Committee (NWC), and all the candidates submitted by the SDP.
Confirming this development to THISDAY, the National Publicity Secretary of the Abure’s faction, Mr. Obiora Ifoh, said the party was aware of its rights as specified in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electoral Acts 2022 as amended, as regards its powers to sponsor candidates in election.

“The party is also aware that the INEC has no powers to either stop it from sponsoring candidates nor cherry-pick elections where it deems fit for our party to field candidates.

”It is on record that no court in Nigeria, including the Supreme Court, has derecognised the present leadership of the Labour Party. It is also a fact that the April 4, 2025 judgment of the Supreme Court ruled only on the lack of jurisdiction of the lower court and Court of Appeal,” Ifoh said.

According to him, the Supreme Court did not rule on the substantive matter as courts, including the Supreme Court, are barred from entertaining cases on the internal matters of any political party.

Ifoh noted that the Supreme Court, in its wisdom, ruled that parties should resolve their problems within the available mechanism as provided by its constitution.

”At no point did the Supreme Court empower INEC to interfere with the internal matters of the political party.

”We are by this statement asking INEC to enlist our duly nominated candidates for the August 16 by-election without further delay, and also refrain from interfering with the internal matters of the Labour Party. INEC cannot arrogate to itself the powers of the courts or give different interpretations to a clear judgment of the apex court,” Ifoh added.

On its part, the Usman-led faction of the party said the decision of INEC indicates that the regulatory body is now ready to implement the April 4, 2025, judgment of the Supreme Court.

Nenadi Usman: INEC’s Decision in Line with Supreme Court’s judgment

Reacting on behalf of Nenadi Usman, her Senior Special Assistant on Media, Ken Asogwa, said: ”Though it’s unfortunate that the Labour Party’s candidates are missing on that list, it’s heartwarming to see that INEC is now beginning to give effect to the judgment of the Supreme Court delivered on April 4, 2025, which affirmed Senator Nenadi Usman as the authentic chairman of the Labour Party.

”Therefore, we urge the INEC as a responsible institution to take further steps by officially recognising Senator Usman as the valid chairman of the party,” he added.

In the last quarterly meeting between INEC and political parties, the Abure-led faction was also excluded from the meeting.

THISDAY gathered that none of the primaries the Abure’s faction conducted was monitored by officials of the commission, a crucial requirement for validating political parties’ primaries and candidates.

Before the Supreme Court’s judgment, INEC had insisted that Abure’s tenure as National Chairman of the LP had expired in June 2023.

A former treasurer of the party, Oluchi Opara, told THISDAY that the apex court’s ruling clarified that Abure and his NWC no longer hold legitimate authority to act on behalf of the Labour Party, including the submission of candidates’ lists for elections.

The exclusion of Abure’s candidates is a significant development for the Labour Party and Nigeria’s democratic process. It sends a clear message that INEC will not tolerate attempts to circumvent legal stipulations or undermine the credibility of elections.

The Labour Party leadership, now operating under recognized structures under the leadership of Senator Nenadi Usman. We commend INEC for its resolute action in this regard. This decision not only upholds the rule of law but also protects the integrity of the electoral process, ensuring that the will of the people is accurately represented,” Opara explained.

“We strongly urge Abure to desist from grandstanding and respect the legal and institutional frameworks governing the party and Nigeria’s electoral system. His persistence in acting outside his capacity threatens to erode the hard-earned trust and goodwill the Labour Party has built over the years,” Opara added

PoliticsLagos Governor Swears In 57 Elected Council Chairmen, Deputies by peekspot(op): 10:34pm On Jul 27, 2025
Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has sworn in newly elected Chairmen and their Deputies across the 57 Local Government and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) of the state.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony held at Lagos House, Ikeja, Governor Sanwo-Olu described their emergence as a clear testament to the trust and confidence reposed in them to develop their respective communities further.

“Your victory is not a trophy, it is a mandate, and it comes with weighty expectations. You have been chosen—not coerced, not imposed, but freely and fairly elected by the people you are now called to serve,” the Governor said.

He reminded them that the people’s expectations are rooted in practical, daily needs, urging them to prioritise real development over rhetoric.

“Distinguished Chairmen, you are now custodians of a great trust. The people have placed in your hands not just votes but their dreams. Their expectations are clear: better roads, safer streets, functioning health centres, thriving schools, modern markets, environmental sanitation, youth engagement, community security. These are not abstractions; they are daily necessities. And your performance will be measured not by the eloquence of your speeches but by the visibility of your actions,” he added.

Sanwo-Olu urged the Chairmen and their Deputies to hit the ground running and take immediate steps to deliver development at the grassroots.

“Now begins the daily grind of governance, the hard work of delivering results, the quiet resolve to stand firm for what is right even when it is not easy. Today’s Lagos is not the Lagos of yesterday. We are a 21st-century mega-city, driven by the energy of over 24 million people. This State is the economic engine of our nation. That energy must be matched at the local level with leadership that is bold, agile, inclusive, and deeply connected to the people,” he stated.

On local government autonomy, Governor Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed the state’s long-standing support for decentralised governance and urged the council officials to use their newfound autonomy with integrity.

“We are living through a new era of local government autonomy, fiscal and administrative independence now affirmed by the Supreme Court of Nigeria. Lagos has always led the charge in this regard. As Chairmen, you now have direct access to your council’s funds. With this comes direct accountability. No excuses. No finger pointing. The buck now stops with you. Use this autonomy wisely. Guard it with transparency. Let your tenure reflect not political entitlement, but public responsibility. Leadership must never be about personal gain and must be about public impact,” he charged.

He also called on the officials to focus on grassroots development, transparent governance, and people-centred service delivery.

In his welcome address, the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, Mr Bolaji Robert, described the victories at the polls as strong indicators of grassroots appeal and public trust.

He said their emergence was based on transparency and broad-based support, adding that the people have placed enormous trust in them.

He urged the newly sworn-in officials to protect their mandate and fulfil their responsibilities with integrity.

InvestmentDangote Reveals Refinery Exported One Million Tonnes Of Petrol In 50 Days by peekspot(op): 1:52pm On Jul 24, 2025
The Dangote oil refinery has begun exporting Premium Motor Spirit to other countries of the world.

President of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, disclosed this on Tuesday at the ongoing Global Commodity Insights Conference on West African Refined Fuel Markets hosted by NMDPRA in partnership with S&P Global Insights.

According to him, between June and July 2025, the refinery exported up to 1 million tonnes of petrol.

“Today, Nigeria has actually become a net exporter of refined products. Before I came on the podium, I asked my people how many tonnes of PMS we have actually exported. From June beginning to date, we have exported about 1 million tonnes of PMS, within the last 50 days,” he said.

Dangote’s comment is coming amid claims that the refinery could not meet local petrol demands.

While Dangote exports PMS, other marketers still import the product into Nigeria

Dangote has since started the export of aviation fuel to Europe and Saudi Arabia.

In the cement industry, he said the Dangote Group is targeting an export of $500m worth of cement and clinker by the year 2027, saying the same is happening in petroleum refining.

PoliticsHow Anti-corruption Activists Turned OPL 245 Affair To Money-making Venture by peekspot(op): 11:05am On Jul 20, 2025
Mohammed Bello Adoke, former attorney-general of the federation (AGF), has accused some anti-corruption activists of turning the OPL 245 litigation into a money-making venture.

He also took a general swipe at what he called the “anti-corruption mobsters” in Nigeria and hinted at taking a legal action against them, although he did not mention any names.

“The perverse incentive that makes ill-informed campaigners injure people’s reputations will have to come under legal scrutiny at some point. Nobody should be able to get away with defamation under any guise,” he wrote in his new book, ‘OPL 245: The Inside Story of the $1.3bn Nigerian Oil Block’, published by The Conrad Press Ltd in the UK.

The book, which was presented at a special event in Abuja on July 10, is scheduled to go on sale nationwide from Thursday, July 24.

“There is a thriving anti-corruption mob in Nigeria. There is no questioning the fact that we have multiple challenges in the war against corruption, but I still have to confess my amazement at how rotten the anti-corruption sector is, whether private or public,” he wrote.

“Many individuals posing as anti-corruption activists stink. They are nothing but blackmailers and dyed-in-the-wool character assassins. I have evidence that when Mr. Abdulrasheed Maina, former Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), ran into a storm in 2012 over allegations of fraud, it was one of the famous ‘anti-corruption’ activists that helped him organize groups to protest in his favor at the National Assembly — for a fee. This particular ‘activist’ owns a number of hotels in Lagos State derived from the proceeds of his anti-corruption business.”

‘A BLIND ALLEY’

The former minister of justice took exception to the role played by Global Witness, a UK-based NGO that co-ordinated the global campaign against the OPL 245 transaction.

In 2023, Patrick Alley, its co-founder, wrote a book, ‘Very Bad People’, in which he pointedly accused Adoke of corruption in the deal.

Adoke wrote: “There is no doubt Alley is arrogantly ignorant and blinded by his obsession with trophy-hunting in the name of fighting corruption. He claims that my involvement in the OPL 245 settlement was ‘in variation’ from my ‘usual job description’ as the Attorney-General. He could have saved himself this embarrassment if he had googled the functions of the Nigerian Attorney-General. It is stated clearly in section 150 (1) of the Constitution that the Attorney-General of the Federation ‘shall be the Chief Law Officer… of the Government of the Federation’.

“The AGF is, in effect, the lawyer to the Government of the Federation. He oversees all government legal matters, including agreements entered into by the Nigerian Federation. It is this sort of ignorance that pushed Alley and his operatives into the wild goose chase in Italy. And the arrogance of ignorance would not allow him to accept that they misfired and failed. He is still in shock and in denial. He can barely disguise his pains.”

He said now that the OPL 245 controversy has been resolved with all court cases closed, “Alley must live the rest of his life dejected. All his work on OPL 245, which he describes as ‘the most sophisticated investigation’, only led him to a blind alley. Everything went up in smoke in the courts of law.”

“He still does not want to accept defeat in this misadventure. He keeps telling himself that the lies which took him and his cohorts years to assemble remain true and valid. The only acceptable outcome to him is the validation of their imagination. Not everybody has the mental capacity to accept defeat. If living in denial will give him any pleasure until his dying days, I wish him all the luck,” he added.

DISCHARGED AND ACQUITTED

Adoke was discharged and acquitted of all corruption allegations in the OPL 245 transaction by both the FCT high court and the federal high court in Abuja.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) did not appeal any of the judgments.

In addition, all the cases instituted by the Nigerian government and Italian prosecutors in England and Italy were dismissed by the courts who concluded that there was no evidence of corruption in the transaction, which involved Malabu Oil & Gas Ltd selling its interest in the oil block to Shell and Eni for a compensation of $1.1 billion.

The Italian prosecutors were jailed for hiding critical evidence that would have exonerated the defendants.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Department of Justice and the Dutch government all investigated the transaction and closed the files without any issuing indictment.

‘THE HATCHET MEN’

Adoke said after the Nigerian courts discharged and acquitted him, “the hatchet men started lobbying for the commission (EFCC) to appeal. The diminutive and deceptive human rights lawyer started shopping for senior lawyers to take up the appeal. They met roadblocks everywhere.

“I could not but marvel at how some people could be so desperate they would go to any length to destroy innocent people. That is what gives them a sense of success and accomplishment in life. Sick mentality!”

He said not only did the UK court dismiss Nigeria’s case against JP Morgan, the bank was awarded £22.25m in damages against the country for defamation over the suit.

“This was in addition to the millions of dollars Nigeria paid to lawyers,” he wrote.

“Scarce resources were wasted on a wild goose chase. As someone sarcastically put it, OPL 245 litigation was an oil block for lawyers and their bosom friends.”

The book is distributed and marketed by Roving Heights bookstore.

President Bola Tinubu President Bola Tinubu is expected to depart Abuja on Sunday for Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, to participate in the eighth-day prayer in honour of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.

The highly respected monarch, who died on July 13 at the age of 91, was laid to rest the following day in a quiet Islamic burial ceremony in Ijebu-Ode.

His passing marks the end of an extraordinary reign spanning 65 years, making him one of Nigeria’s longest-serving and most influential traditional rulers. News360 Nigeria reports that President

Tinubu will join Governor Dapo Abiodun and other top dignitaries at the memorial event, which is expected to draw a host of prominent figures from across the country.

The prayer ceremony is scheduled to hold at the Dipo Dina International Stadium, one of the largest venues in Ijebu-Ode.

The event is expected to draw traditional rulers, political leaders, business executives and religious figures from across Nigeria and beyond.

Earlier on Friday, the President paid a condolence visit to Kano, where he sympathised with the family of late elder statesman, Alh. Aminu Dantata.

Tinubu has intensified condolence visits in recent weeks following the loss of several high-profile Nigerians, including former President Muhammadu Buhari.

These visits reflect his commitment to honouring leaders who have served Nigeria with distinction and left a lasting legacy.

During Oba Adetona’s 90th birthday and 64th coronation anniversary, Tinubu conferred upon him Nigeria’s second-highest national honour, recognising his national contributions.

The Oba was widely regarded as a progressive traditional ruler who spoke truth to power and prioritised education and development across Ijebu community.

In his journey to the presidency, Tinubu began his consultations with Oba Adetona, a gesture that demonstrated deep personal and political respect.

After emerging victorious, he returned to the Awujale’s palace to express appreciation, fulfilling a promise he made during the campaign.

In preparation for the eighth-day prayer, security has been strengthened across Ijebu-Ode, especially on roads leading to key venues.

Streets around Dipo Dina Stadium, the Awujale’s Palace, and his Igbeba private residence are now under strict surveillance by security operatives.

Officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and Amotekun Corps are positioned at strategic points. Their presence is to ensure peace and proper coordination of the event, expected to attract thousands of mourners and well-wishers.

NAN also reports that several major markets in Ijebu-Ode will be closed on Sunday to honour the departed monarch.

Markets like Ita-Ale, Ita-Osu, and Oke-Aje will suspend activities to allow traders and residents pay their final respects.

Locals describe the late Oba Adetona as a beacon of development and a monarch whose reign transformed Ijebu’s social and economic standing. Many residents expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for choosing to personally honour the memory of the departed royal father.

Yusuf Balogun, a local cab driver, said the prayer is significant, particularly for Muslims, as it is part of Islamic burial traditions.

“Our baba brought development and dignity to Ijebu community. We pray Allah forgives his sins and grants him Al-jannah Firdaus,” Balogun said emotionally. He added, “The President’s visit is a great honour to us. It shows the impact our Oba made on Nigeria.”

Damilola Ogunsanwo, a petty trader near the stadium, said the event has created opportunities for small businesses and increased customer traffic. She noted that visitors have already started arriving, creating demand for food, water, fabrics, and accommodation in the area.

Several hotel operators in Ijebu-Ode confirmed to NAN that occupancy rates have surged ahead of the prayer ceremony.

Some hotels reported being fully booked and anticipate more visitors arriving as the President and other dignitaries head into town. Ijebu-Ode residents say this is a fitting tribute to a monarch who embodied dignity, service, and development throughout his extraordinary reign.

Oba Adetona is remembered as a moderniser, champion of education, and advocate of good governance and accountability. His reign helped position Ijebuland as a centre of excellence, attracting investment, scholarship, and tourism to the region. As Nigeria mourns his passing, the eighth-day prayer offers an opportunity to reflect on a life of meaningful leadership and uncommon wisdom.

Foreign AffairsFive Killed, Three Injured In Mass Shooting At South African Bar by peekspot(op): 9:51am On Jul 20, 2025
South African authorities have launched a manhunt after a group of armed assailants stormed a bar in Olievenhoutbosch, a township near the capital Pretoria, killing five people and injuring three others.
According to police, the attack occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. local time (2030 GMT) on Friday night.
Around 10 unidentified gunmen entered the tavern and opened fire on patrons without uttering a word, in what appears to have been a random and unprovoked assault.
The incident adds to the growing wave of mass shootings in South Africa, a country grappling with high levels of violent crime.
On average, more than 75 murders are recorded daily, prompting national concern over public safety and the proliferation of illegal firearms.
Three men and two women were killed.
“The motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage,” police said in a statement. Shootings are common in South Africa, often fuelled by gang violence and alcohol.
Many people own licenced fire arms for personal protection, yet there are many more illegal guns in circulation.
A national security strategy published this week warned that crime syndicates may evolve to use “more dangerous and sophisticated weapons”.
“If the problem of gangsterism is not addressed, gangs will continue to occupy social spaces and create no-go areas and in turn fuel vigilantism as (communities) attempt to reclaim spaces and protect themselves from crimes perpetrated by gangs,” the redacted report said.
There were more than 27,600 murders in South Africa in the 2023-2024 financial year, according to police statistics, with most of the victims being young, black men in urban areas.

PoliticsWale Adeniyi Emerges World Customs Organization Chair by peekspot(op): 11:30am On Jun 29, 2025
The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Mr. Wale Adeniyi, has been elected as the new Chairman of the World Customs Organisation (WCO) Council.

His election took place during the final session of the 145th/146th WCO Council Meetings, held at the WCO Headquarters in Brussels.

This marks a significant milestone, as Mr. Adeniyi becomes the first Nigerian to hold this prestigious position since the WCO’s inception in 1953. He takes over the role from Edward Kieswetter, the Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service.

Reacting to the appointment, Mr. Adeniyi expressed profound appreciation to the Council members for the confidence reposed in his leadership, describing the moment as both humbling and historic for Nigeria and the African Customs community at large.

“This honour is not mine alone, it reflects the collective progress of the Nigeria Customs Service and the transformative agenda we’ve pursued over the past two years.

“As Chairperson, I pledge to uphold the core values of the WCO, while promoting innovation, equity, and deeper collaboration among member states in response to the complex realities of global trade,” he said.

The CG also expressed gratitude to the Council for electing him the Chairperson. He pledged unwavering support for the World Customs Organisation’s ongoing modernisation efforts and affirmed his commitment to implementing its 2025–2028 strategic plan.

He added, “We are entering a critical phase in the evolution of global trade, where customs must balance facilitation with enforcement, transparency with innovation, and sovereignty with cooperation.

“I intend to work closely with member administrations and stakeholders to position the WCO as a dynamic, forward-looking institution fit for today’s challenges.”

The customs boss acknowledged the commendable work of his predecessor, for the guidance and stability provided to the Council.

He noted that his leadership laid a solid foundation upon which current reforms can thrive.

The CGC further expressed optimism towards the coming sessions of the Council, affirming his readiness to facilitate meaningful dialogue and progress among the global customs community.

The WCO Council is the organisation’s supreme governing body, established by the Convention on the Establishment of a Customs Co-operation Council. Its core mandate promotes uniformity, modernisation, and global best practices among customs administrations. All WCO working bodies report to the Council, whose policy decisions guide the operations of customs administrations across its 185 member states.

As Chairperson, CGC Adeniyi is expected to provide strategic leadership to the WCO Policy Commission, steering the global customs agenda and facilitating high-level discussions on trade facilitation, revenue optimisation, security, cross-border cooperation, and digital transformation.

He will also work closely with the WCO Secretary-General, Mr. Ian Saunders, and the WCO Secretariat to ensure implementation of the organisation’s Strategic Plan, while championing greater inclusivity, capacity development, and sustainability in customs operations, particularly for developing countries.

The Chairperson also plays a key diplomatic role, representing the WCO at high-level global fora and strengthening relationships with external partners such as the Private Sector Consultative Group (PSCG), international donor bodies, and multilateral trade institutions.

Shortly after the Council Session, in a symbolic moment that captured the significance of Nigeria’s ascension, the South African flag was symbolic ally lowered, while the Nigerian flag was hoisted at the WCO headquarters, a powerful gesture signifying Nigeria’s leadership as Chair of the Council.

PoliticsCourt Declares Nnamdi Kanu’s Extradition To Nigeria Illegal, Awards Damages by peekspot(op): 11:12am On Jun 29, 2025
A High Court in Nairobi, Kenya, has declared the abduction and detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in June 2021 unlawful and illegal.

The court also awarded compensatory damages of 10 million Kenyan shillings against the Kenyan Government for gross violations of Kanu’s fundamental human rights.

In a ruling delivered by Justice E.C. Mwita, the court faulted both the Nigerian and Kenyan governments for their roles in what it described as an unlawful rendition that violated Kanu’s rights as guaranteed by the Kenyan Constitution.

The judge noted that having entered Kenya lawfully, Kanu was entitled to the protection of the country’s laws, but was instead abducted, held in solitary confinement, tortured, and denied basic necessities before being forcefully removed to Nigeria without due process.

The court declared that this act breached Kanu’s rights to movement, security of the person, and protection under Kenyan and international law, describing it as unconstitutional and illegal.

Meanwhile, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has hailed the ruling as a landmark judicial victory.

In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, IPOB described the judgement as a validation of their consistent claim that Kanu’s transfer was not an extradition but an extraordinary rendition, a criminal act of state-sponsored international terrorism.

The group expressed gratitude to their lead counsel, Professor PLO Lumumba, and praised the Kenyan judiciary for what they called fearless and impartial justice in the face of political and diplomatic pressure.

IPOB vowed to pursue global accountability against those responsible for the illegal act, accusing former Nigerian and Kenyan leaders of complicity.

“This judgement vindicates our position that what transpired in Nairobi in June 2021 was not an extradition but a criminal abduction,” IPOB said.

The group further promised to launch a global campaign to hold all involved accountable, declaring this verdict as a victory for oppressed peoples around the world and a warning to oppressive regimes.

Foreign AffairsFull Speech: Donald Trump’s Address To Nation After Attack On Iran by peekspot(op): 6:12am On Jun 22, 2025
After announcing the “very successful” US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities at Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan, United States President Donald Trump addressed the nation.

Here is the full transcript of his speech on Saturday evening:

A short time ago, the US military carried out massive precision strikes on the three key nuclear facilities in the Iranian regime: Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan.

Everybody heard those names for years as they built this horribly destructive enterprise. Our objective was the destruction of Iran’s nuclear enrichment capacity and a stop to the nuclear threat posed by the world’s number one state sponsor of terror.

Tonight, I can report to the world that the strikes were a spectacular military success. Iran’s key nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely and totally obliterated. Iran, the bully of the Middle East, must now make peace.

If they do not, future attacks will be far greater and a lot easier.

For 40 years, Iran has been saying, “Death to America, death to Israel”.

They have been killing our people, blowing off their arms, blowing off their legs with roadside bombs – that was their speciality.

We lost over a thousand people, and hundreds of thousands throughout the Middle East and around the world have died as a direct result of their hate, in particular, so many were killed by their general, Qassem Soleimani.

I decided a long time ago that I would not let this happen.

I want to thank and congratulate Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu.

We worked as a team like perhaps no team has ever worked before, and we’ve gone a long way to erasing this horrible threat to Israel.

I want to thank the Israeli military for the wonderful job they’ve done and, most importantly, I want to congratulate the great American patriots who flew those magnificent machines tonight, and all of the United States military on an operation the likes of which the world has not seen in many, many decades.

Hopefully, we will no longer need their services in this capacity. I hope that’s so. I also want to congratulate the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan “Razin” Caine – spectacular general – and all of the brilliant military minds involved in this attack.

With all of that being said, this cannot continue.

There will be either peace or there will be tragedy for Iran far greater than we have witnessed over the last eight days.

Remember, there are many targets left. Tonight’s was the most difficult of them all by far, and perhaps the most lethal, but if peace does not come quickly, we will go after those other targets with precision, speed and skill. Most of them can be taken out in a matter of minutes.

There’s no military in the world that could have done what we did tonight, not even close. There has never been a military that could do what took place just a little while ago.

Tomorrow, General Caine, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, will have a press conference at 8am (12:00 GMT) at the Pentagon, and I want to just thank everybody, and in particular, God.

I want to just say, “We love you, God, and we love our great military. Protect them.” God bless the Middle East. God bless Israel, and God bless America.

Thank you very much. Thank you.

Foreign AffairsB-2 Bombers Moving To Guam Amid Middle East Tensions, US Officials Say by peekspot(op): 11:01pm On Jun 21, 2025
The United States is moving B-2 bombers to the Pacific island of Guam, two U.S. officials told Reuters on Saturday, as President Donald Trump weighs whether the United States should take part in Israel's strikes against Iran.
It was unclear whether the bomber deployment is tied to Middle East tensions.

The B-2 can be equipped to carry America's 30,000-pound GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator, designed to destroy targets deep underground. That is the weapon that experts say could be used to strike Iran's nuclear program, including Fordow.

The officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, declined to disclose any further details. One official said no forward orders had been given yet to move the bombers beyond Guam. They did not say how many B-2 bombers are being moved.
The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Experts and officials are closely watching to see whether the B-2 bombers will move forward to a U.S.-British military base on the Indian Ocean island of Diego Garcia. Experts say that Diego Garcia is in an ideal position to operate in the Middle East.

The United States had B-2 bombers on Diego Garcia up until last month, when they were replaced with B-52 bombers.
Israel said on Saturday it had killed a veteran Iranian commander during attacks by both sides in the more than week-long air war, while Tehran said it would not negotiate over its nuclear program while under threat.
Israel says Iran was on the verge of developing nuclear weapons, while Iran says its atomic program is only for peaceful purposes.

Trump has said he would take up to two weeks to decide whether the United States should enter the conflict on Israel's side, enough time "to see whether or not people come to their senses," he said.
Reuters was first to report this week the movement of a large number of tanker aircraft to Europe and other military assets to the Middle East, including the deployment of more fighter jets.
An aircraft carrier in the Indo-Pacific is also heading to the Middle East.

Foreign AffairsIran Leader Khamenei Isolated, Son Rising, As Inner Circle Falls To Israel by peekspot(op): 10:10am On Jun 19, 2025
At 86, Ayatollah Khamenei appears to be steering Iran through one of its most perilous geopolitical moments, whilst himself being one if Israel's main targets.

Amid Israel's unrelenting attacks on Iran to stop it from going further with its nuclear plans, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, once backed by a close-knit web of trusted commanders and strategists, now finds himself increasingly isolated after a string of targeted Israeli airstrikes that have decimated his inner circle.

According to a Reuters report, which cited five individuals familiar with the inner workings of Khamenei’s circle, the loss of senior Revolutionary Guards officials—those most trusted by the Supreme Leader—has created a significant strategic vacuum.

Israel Prime Minister Netanyahu on Monday, in an interview with ABC News, suggested that eliminating Ali Khamenei would not escalate the war but would “end it”.

Risk of miscalculations
One of the sources cited in the Reuters report, who frequently attends meetings with Khamenei, warned the situation has reached a critical juncture.

“The risk of miscalculation to Iran on issues of defence and internal stability is extremely dangerous,” the report quoted the source as saying.

The recent Israeli air raids, which intensified over the past week, has killed several top commanders including Guards commander Hossein Salami, Amir Ali Hajizadeh—the head of Iran’s missile program—and Mohammad Kazemi, its top intelligence chief.

All of the above-mentioned people were believed to be among the 15–20 people considered part of Khamenei’s core advisory team.

This ad-hoc group, comprised senior clerics, politicians, and Revolutionary Guards elites, meets when summoned by Khamenei's office to deliberate on critical issues. Their hallmark trait? Absolute loyalty—to Khamenei and to the ideology of the Islamic Republic.

Since rising to power in 1989, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has managed to get ultimate control over Iran’s armed forces and key state appointments. Despite his iron grip, insiders say he regularly consults his advisers, listens to competing viewpoints, and insists on detailed information before deciding.

“Two things you can say about Khamenei: he is extremely stubborn but also extremely cautious. He is very cautious. That is why he has been in power for as long as he has,” the report quoted Alex Vatanka, director of the Iran Program at the Middle East Institute.

“Khamenei is pretty well placed to do the basic cost-benefit analysis which really fundamentally gets to one issue more important than anything else: regime survival,” he added.

A hollowing circle
The recent string of assassinations comes at a time of maximum pressure: surging unrest at home due to a crumbling economy under Western sanctions, and escalating conflict with Israel, which has stepped up its strikes on Iranian military and nuclear targets.

Khamenei’s hold on power has historically relied on the Revolutionary Guards and its Basij militia to crush protests in 1999, 2009, and 2022. While these forces have always restored state control, analysts warn the economic pain could one day spark unrest too deep to suppress.

Though military casualties have grabbed headlines, political and diplomatic advisers still form a functioning backbone. Among those still in Khamenei’s confidence are foreign policy veterans Ali Akbar Velayati, Kamal Kharazi, ex-parliament speaker Ali Larijani, and intelligence heavyweight Ali Asghar Hejazi.

Still, the absence of key military figures and open threats by Israeli government creates a dangerous blind spot in Iran’s most vital arena—its regional military strategy and internal security.

Khamenei's son Mojtaba Rises
In the shadows of this power reshuffling stands Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba Khamenei, whose role over the last two decades is said to have expanded significantly.

A mid-ranking cleric, Mojtaba has grown into a powerful behind-the-scenes coordinator, interfacing with multiple factions, especially the Guards, and is increasingly viewed as a possible successor.

Outside Iran, losses have been just as severe for Khamenei. Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah, a close ally, was killed in an Israeli strike in September. In December, Syria’s Bashar al-Assad—another key member of Iran’s "Axis of Resistance"—was overthrown by rebels.

As Khamenei confronts perhaps the most risky phase of his rule, his famed caution may be tested like never before—this time, without many of the voices he once depended on and further isolation by the recent losses other key advisers in the region due to the hammering of Iran's "Axis of Resistance" by Israel.

Lebanon's armed group Hezbollah, Houthi rebels of Yemen and the Hamas militant outfit of Palestine along with other Iran's proxies and Iranian-backed groups are called the “Axis of Resistance.”

Foreign AffairsHow Has Iran Managed To Pierce Through Israel’s Air Defence Systems? by peekspot(op): 7:10am On Jun 19, 2025
Israel’s launch of air attacks against Iran on Friday prompted Tehran to fire a wave of retaliatory strikes on Israel, and some Iranian ballistic missiles have pierced through Israel’s missile defence systems and hit key targets.

Israel’s escalating attacks have killed more than 240 people, including 70 women and children, in Iran. In retaliation, Iran has fired about 400 missiles and hundreds of drones, killing at least 24 people in Israel, wounding hundreds and forcing Israelis across the country to take cover in bomb shelters.

Some Iranian strikes have hit residential areas in central Israel, causing heavy damage. Israel’s fortified military headquarters in Tel Aviv, the Kirya, was also hit although damage was limited there.

On Tuesday, Iran said it hit a military intelligence centre and a Mossad spy agency operations planning centre, breaching Israel’s advanced missile defence systems – some of the most advanced in the world.

In recent history, Israel has successfully intercepted most aerial attacks coming its way through these systems, such as its signature Iron Dome.

So how are Iranian missiles making it past Israel’s air defences?

What is Israel’s Iron Dome?
While the Iron Dome is at the heart of Israel’s air defences, it is only a part of a larger system, comprising “the lowest level of these multitiered, integrated air defences,” said Alex Gatopoulos, Al Jazeera’s defence editor.

The Iron Dome detects an incoming rocket or missile, determines its path and intercepts it. Israel said the Iron Dome is 90 percent effective. It became operational in 2011 after it was developed to counter rocket attacks during the war with Hezbollah in 2006.

Gatopoulos explained that the Iron Dome was designed to intercept low-level rockets that larger systems would not be able to detect.

Israel also has the Barak-8 surface-to-air missile system, which intercepts medium-range missiles; the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system, which intercepts short-, medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles; and the David’s Sling, which intercepts medium- to long-range missiles.

What is Israel’s defence against Iranian missiles?
The Israeli missile defence systems use the Arrow-2 and Arrow-3 interceptors to intercept long-range missiles, such as Iranian missiles fired in the current conflict.

The main contractor for the Arrow project is state-owned Israel Aerospace Industries, and Boeing is involved in making the interceptors.

The Arrow-2 is designed to intercept incoming missiles at slightly higher altitudes within and outside the Earth’s atmosphere.

Besides using air defence systems, Israel also carries out air-to-air missile defence, which involves the use of aircraft, such as combat helicopters or fighter jets, to destroy drones heading towards Israel.

How do air defence systems work?
Israeli air defence systems are made of three components: a radar system, a command and control centre, and a launcher with interceptor missiles.

An incoming enemy missile is tracked on the radar, which alerts the control centre to assess which targets to engage. The launcher normally sends out two interceptor missiles for one incoming enemy missile, Marina Miron, a postdoctoral researcher at King’s College London, told Al Jazeera.

All air defence systems are equipped with a limited number of interceptor missiles, and the exact number of interceptor missiles in Israel’s air defence systems is unknown to the public.

Has Iran broken through Israeli air defences?
On Saturday, an Israeli military official said its defence systems had an “80 or 90 percent success rate”, emphasising that no system has a perfect rate, the Reuters news agency reported without naming the official.

This means that some Iranian missiles had pierced the fortifications.

How has Iran managed to break through?
While we do not know exactly how some Iranian missiles made it past Israeli air defence systems, there are a few possible ways Iranian drones and missiles managed to avoid interception.

Exhausting interceptor missiles
One way Iran possibly evaded Israeli air defences is by exhausting Israel’s interceptor missiles.

“No system shoots down 100 percent [missiles] anyway,” Miron said, adding: “You cannot shoot down more missiles if you only have a limited number of interceptors.”

Hypersonic missiles
Gatopoulos said Iran has hypersonic missiles, a direct reaction to evolving and maturing ballistic missile defences. This is because one way to evade an air defence system is to use missiles that fly faster, giving the air defence system less time to react.

Miron said hypersonic missiles are difficult for air defence systems to intercept even if they are detected by radar.

Some hypersonic missiles are also equipped with a hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV), a warhead attached to a missile that can manoeuvre and glide at speeds five times faster than the speed of sound. In Iran, the Fattah-2 uses the HGV. “It looks like a normal missile with a craft attached to the end of it,” Gatopoulos said.

He explained that besides travelling faster, HGVs also zigzag and do not move on a predictive path like regular ballistic missiles. Such quick, erratic movements evade air defence systems, which are designed to predict the path a missile will take.

Cruise missiles
Cruise missiles can also change their trajectory and become difficult to intercept, Miron said.

Iran has cruise missiles in its arsenal, such as the Hoveyzeh missile, and has used such missiles against Israel. While these missiles are slower than ballistic missiles, they fly like pilotless planes, low and steady, sneaking past air defences.

What are other ways air defence systems can be challenged?
Another way air defence systems can be tested is by overloading their systems by tricking them with decoys of drones and missiles, Miron added.

“It shows up as a threat on the radar, but in actuality, it’s not. And usually such decoys are used … to empty the interceptor missile reserve so that the actual missiles and drones can get through.”

Miron added that some missiles are also equipped with radar suppression technologies that make them undetectable for air defence systems.

Could Iran or Israel run out of missiles?
Gatopoulos explained that the conflict between Iran and Israel is “attritional” at the moment.

On Monday, Israel claimed dominance over Iranian skies. However, the shortest distance between Iran and Israel is 1,000km (620 miles). “It is a long way for Israeli planes to go unfuelled,” Gatopoulos said.

“You can loiter there, but only up to a certain amount of time,” he added. He explained that while the US could possibly help Israel with air-to-air refuelling, adding external tanks on planes makes them lose stealth properties.

Gatopoulos added that this raises questions of how many missiles Iran has to continue the conflict of attrition as Israeli planes patrol and try to destroy any mobile launchers and how many interceptors, Arrow-2 and -3 especially, Israel has that it can keep firing.

EducationASUU Threatens Nationwide Strike Over Unfulfilled FG Agreement by peekspot(op): 5:46pm On May 24, 2025
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has asked the federal government to fulfil the 2009 FG/ASUU agreement or face a nationwide industrial action.

NAN reports that Chris Piwuna, ASUU president, spoke during a press conference in Abuja on Friday.

Piwuna said the union was frustrated by the government’s failure to resolve nine critical issues that have long plagued Nigeria’s public universities.

The ASUU president highlighted the stalled renegotiation of the agreement since 2017 as part of the unresolved issues.

He mentioned the withholding of salaries from the 2022 strike and unpaid entitlements linked to the controversial Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

Piwuna also criticised the government’s delay in releasing revitalisation funds and earned academic allowances.

He said commitments remain unfulfilled despite pledges to inject N150 billion into the university system and adjust irregular allowances by 2026.

Piwuna alleged the marginalisation of ASUU members at state-owned institutions like Kogi State University and Lagos State University.

He cited victimisation, job insecurity, and salary denials in those institutions, adding that these issues undermine staff morale.

He argued that universities are becoming “battlegrounds for political and economic interests”.

He said political interference has compromised the selection of leaders in institutions such as Nnamdi Azikiwe University and the University of Abuja.

The ASUU president called for a “national rebirth through education”. He proposed an education summit focused on funding, university autonomy and academic welfare.

“Education empowers citizens, drives innovation, and instils values. Without it, development is impossible,” Piwuna said.

“Our universities should be centres for solutions to national challenges.

“We are open to dialogue but will not tolerate further erosion of our rights.”

PoliticsViral Tenancy Law Amendment Is Fabricated, Says Lagos Government by peekspot(op): 4:35pm On May 24, 2025
The Lagos government has disowned a viral statement notifying residents of an amendment to the state’s tenancy law.

On Friday, reports alleging an update to the law began circulating on X.

The alleged amendment capped advance rent payments to three months for existing tenants and imposed stricter limits on how landlords can terminate tenancies and increase rents.

Fines of up to N100,000 or three months’ imprisonment were listed as penalties.

Barakat Bakare, special adviser to the Lagos governor on housing, on Saturday refuted the reports.

In a statement, Bakare said the publication did not emanate from the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA).

The government official affirmed that the 2015 tenancy law still subsists.

“However, the bill for a new Tenancy law is under due consideration at the Lagos State House of Assembly and yet to be passed into Law,” Bakare said.

She said the ministry of housing is currently engaging stakeholders in this regard.

“The culture of monthly payment and a clear understanding of the process of real estate transactions at all levels are being discussed at these engagements,” the statement added.

Bakare said the public would be notified when there is a new law.

The viral report comes as a housing crisis, characterised by soaring rents, exploitative landlord practices, forced evictions, and a massive housing deficit, deepens in the state.

The situation is compounded by rapid urbanisation and population growth.
