My name is Peetar a Record Producer||Sound engineer.
In this article am gonna be dropping few tips when mixing vocals to blend with your beats, just a few pointers for the newbiez, some engineers have specific concepts of mixing vocals and may be different from mine but we are all driving at the same result, that is, better sounding vocals.
Herez my Tips:
1. Always avoid loudness, let there be much headroom when ur mixing ur vocal, try bring down the volume of ur channel before mixing.
2. Use eq to highpass muddy frequencies from ur vocals around about 100hz and narrow cut roomy sound from ur vocals around about 350-500hz when theres need for it cuz some vocals are perfectly recorded and has no need for cutting out all the time.
3. I think is better to clean out with ur eq before compressing cuz ur compressors tamez down any unwanted loud freqz and boost low freq and when ur muddy and roomy lowz start coming up ur definitely gonna have problem with ur vocal.
4. When compressing vocal let ur attack time be a bit fast and ur release a bit longer than ur attack to be able to tame ur high freq(shouting,screaming) and boost ur lows dat, the listener might be finding hard to hear.
5. Always be gentle with ur threshold and ratio after setting ur attack and release cause ur definitely taming and boosting freqz and ur threshold and ratio will give more reason for ur compressor to act so be carefull or i will say be moderate, cause we are not trying to kill the originality of the vocals but rather enhancing them.
So i will stop here for now i basically gave tips on EQ and COMP my next article we will be talking about reverb and delays .Remember this are just my own tips from experience someone somewhere might be doing it differently so thanks for reading till next time
