The wife of James Ocholi, the Nigerian junior Minister for Labor who died today in an auto crash between Kaduna and Abuja, has also been confirmed dead. Mrs. Ocholi, who was evacuated from the scene of the accident to a local hospital in Doka, Kaduna State, was confirmed dead a few minutes after arriving at the hospital. A source at the Kaduna State government told our correspondent that the death of Mrs. Ocholi brings the casualty number in the horrific accident to three. Mr. Ocholi, who was traveling on a private visit to Kaduna in company of his wife and first son, died when his driver slammed on the brakes of his Lexus SUV car while at top speed. A source told SaharaReporters that the driver slammed on the brakes after receiving a radio message from the security car behind the minister’s main vehicle alerting him to a low pressure on one of the back tires. The driver’s panicked reaction precipitated an accident as the security vehicle then rammed into the minister’s vehicle, which somersaulted several times, instantly killing Mr. Ocholi and his first son. Mrs. Ocholi was subsequently pronounced dead after she was taken to a hospital. A source disclosed that the bodies of Mr. Ocholi and his family were being transported to a morgue in Abuja.

on Wednesday struck out all suits
filed against the founder of the
Indigenous People Of Biafra,
Nnamdi Kanu.
Magistrate Shuaibu Usman struck
out all criminal charges levelled
against Mr. Kanu after counsel to
the State Security Services, Moses
Idakwo, filed for discontinuation
of the matter on the instruction of
his client.
Mr. Usman said since the SSS,
through its lawyer, had filed for a
discontinuation of the case, he
had no option than to discharge
the accused.
Mr. Idakwo said further
investigations by the SSS had
shown that charges against Mr.
Kanu could not be entertained by
a Magistrate Court due to lack of
jurisdiction.
Although he has been discharged
by the magistrate court, Mr. Kanu
may have a few more steps to
freedom as he is also being tried
at a Federal High Court.
At the hearing of the case on
Monday, Mr. Idakwo told a Federal
High Court in Abuja that Mr. Kanu,
was sponsoring terrorism against
Nigeria.
Mr. Idakwo asked the court to
disregard a bail application by Mr.
Kanu’s counsel, Vincent Obeta, as
the matter involving his client was
terrorism-related.
He said the SSS had evidence of
bank accounts owned by the
accused person where monies
(both in dollars and pound
sterling) were allegedly used for
financing acts of terrorism against
the country.
Mr. Idakwo told the court that Mr.
Kanu had dual citizenship of
Britain and Nigeria and therefore
could flee and escape justice if
granted bail.
Mr. Obeta also said his client had
been in detention for 90 days.
After hearing the arguments of the
two counsel regarding the bail
application, the judge said he
would look into the matter, setting
aside Thursday, December 17, to
deliver ruling on Mr. Kanu’s bail.
Mr. Kanu had been in detention at
the SSS cell since his arrest in
October by the secret service
operatives.

A five-man Court of Appeal panel sitting Abuja has upheld the ruling of the gubernatorial election tribunal in Rivers state. In a 110- page ruling delivered by Justice M.B. Dongban-Mensem the Court ruled that the election of Nyesom Wike did not conform with the electoral act. The Court has ordered a rerun in 90 days. In delivering a final ruling the Court of Appeal decided all the seven issues raised by Governor Wike against in favour of Dakuku Peterside and the All Progressives Congress party. The appellate court refused to discard the findings of a lower tribunal saying the number of witnesses is not the main issue but evaluation of the strength of evidence before the trial court. Issue one on fair hearing resolved for the APC candidate, Dakuku The appellate court also stated it has evaluated the guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission and holds them sacrosanct. The Court of Appeal said it agrees that gubernatorial election was marred by wide-scale violence. On issue two regarding competence of ruling by the new chairman in the lower tribunal, stamps, issuance of service and jurisdiction, the court ruled it was in order. On issue three about locus standing to institute the case at the tribunal in 21 days, the issue was again resolved in APC's favor. The court described the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Wike as crying more than the bereaved Issue four on INEC manuals, guidelines and non-compliance including non-issuance of pre- hearing notices by the chairman of the lower tribunal, court resolved in APC's favor saying it was immaterial. Issue five is on the reliance on documentary evidence by the tribunal resolved for APC On issue six as to whether the lower tribunal was right on card readers, the appeals court said in the evaluation of the evidence before the tribunal after a thorough analysis of the subject matter of card readers, and its use, the lead judge stated categorically that card readers guarantees credible elections. The Court stated that INEC manuals were consistent with the provisions of electoral Act. The Court then dismissed Wike's appeal on all grounds and ordered INEC to conduct a fresh governorship election in Rivers state within 90 days.
