Load Bearing Walls

Load bearing walls support load from floors and roof in addition to their own weight and resist side pressure from winds or sometime from store materials or object within the building.

Load bearing is capable of dual function i.e Load bearing and of space enclosure and division.

Walls

* External ( Load bearing wall and Non-load bearing )
* Internal ( Load bearing wall and Non-load bearing )

Disadvantage of Load bearing

* It suffers certain inherent disadvantages, it becomes big and heavy at the base of tall buildings.
* It is restrictive when an open plan is required.

Non-load bearing walls

The external non load bearing walls related to a frame structure withstands a panel wall, if of masonry (stone) construction and in-filling panel wall,if of higher construction. Panel wall if of masonry construction or cladding when applied to the face of the frame. Non load bearing walls carries no floors or roof load.

N.B: Cladding when you placed a wall after a column and the column it is visible on the inside but not visible on the outside, the walls can be of lighter materials e.g curtain walls.

The term partition is apply to walls, either load or non-load bearing wall dividing the space of the building into rooms. Internal walls which separates rooms within a building for the purposes of fire protection are called respectively SEPARATING and DIVISION walls.

In addition there are RETAINING walls, the primary function which is to support and resist the thrust of soil and perhaps soil water on one side.
The most important functional requirement of retaining walls is strength and stability.

WALL(S)

Walls are vertical element of a building which encloses space within it and which may also divide space. Together with the roof they form environmental envelope. When the form of construction is based on a solid or surface structure they become the basic support element.

N.B: Framed structure gives room for flexibility, however solid structure do not.

TYPES OF WALLS

Walls may be divided into two types.
i. Load bearing
ii. Non load bearing ( From a structural point of view)

* Enclosing of space and provides support.
* Adequate strength and stability
* Weather resistance
* Fire resistance
* Thermal insulation
* Sound insulation

The term floor refers to the structural part of horizontal element as distinct from the wearing surface ( a protection for the floor e.g terrazo,marble,tiles etc. ). Floors functions is mainly to provide support for the occupants, furnitures and equipments of the building. To perform this function, the design and construction of the floor must satisfy a numbers of requirements vis-à-vis (namely)

1. The provision of adequate strength and stability
2. Adequate fire resistance
3. Adequate sound insulation
4. Adequate thermal insulation
5. Adequate damp proof resistance

Types of Floor

* Ground Floor Slab
* Suspended Floor Slab

Ground Floor Slab
- Suspended ground floor slab
- Elevated ground floor slab
- Normal ground floor slab
- Depressed ground floor slab

Suspended Floor Slab
- Precast & In-situ casting (Flush flooring,beam and slab,drop beam and slab,waffle grid)
- Self centering slab (Inverted Tee-section beam and hollow in filling blocks).

N.B: Floors are either In-situ cast or precast(post tension floor and pre tension floor)

Foundation Systems

We can classified it into two broad categories:

* Shallow foundation/spread foundation.
* Deep foundation.

Shallow Foundation

Are employed when stable soil of adequate bearing capacity occurs relatively near to the ground. They are placed directly below the lowest part of a sub structures and transfer building loads directly to the supporting soil by vertical pressure.
Depth of excavation is usually between 1 - 1.5m.

Deep Foundation

Are employed when the soil underlining the building foundation is unstable or inadequate bearing capacity. They extend down through unstable soil to transfer load to a more appropriate bearing stratum of rocks or dense sand and gravel below the super structure. It is usually greater than 1.5m - 30m,60m.

* Pattern and magnitude of building load.
* Sub surface and ground water condition.
* Topography of the site.
* Impact of adjacent properties.
* Construction method and risk.
* Building codes and regulations.
