The Atletico game is an example of how a reactive/defensive tactic will always affect you in the long run, After a while your team forgets how to coordinate attacks or forget attacking patterns, All they see is the threat of the opponent and how to nullify it while forgetting their own attacking plan. Its the same thing affecting Mourinho to a large extent

Atletico shines more vs team that they go into the tie as underdog, they score first and counter for the rest which is what they have always used for the top teams in the CL like Liverpool last season, Bayern 2016, Barca 2017 etc They almost used this to win the CL in 2014 and 2017 taking Madrid to extra time in both finals

But when they meet teams that are equal to them or where Atletico is the slight favourite, they become clueless. This was what happened to them vs Leipzig last season too, There was a season Roger Schmidt and Leverkusen took them to penalties over 2 legs. Their plan this season was to play 0-0 in the first leg or at worse get a fluke goal but the Giroud bicycle kick scattered their plan and they didnt have a plan B.
You have Suarez, Carrasco, Saul, Koke you have a 120M Felix, 80M Lemar, Correa 40M Dembele etc and still struggling to string 3 passes in opponent half never mind shots on target
