Ethiopia my second hope for Africa, and doing so well only a few years ago, now look at it. Ethiopia fought wars for decades, nothing better came out of those obviously. Now another war that will set Ethiopia back and nothing better than what was will come out of this one too, as in most African wars.

In a federal system of govt It is enshrined in it features that the constitution is supreme, Rigid and above all " no right of secession" which means no region is allowed to break away from the entity.

While in a confederation there is right of secession in the constitution, which means any independent state which makes up the union is free to leave the union when they wish.

The USSR, Czechoslovakia, Senegambia were all confederation, while the former Jugoslavia was a federal state, that was why jugoslavia had to go through series of wars of secession before it finally disintegrated.
