Mr Idang,from Odukpani, Cross River State, said he joined IPOB on March 17, 2020 and was recruited into its security arm, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), and has participated in the killing of close to a dozen security operatives, including four soldiers.

He said his first “movement” was on January 21, 2020, where they attacked a police checkpoint on the road in Orlu, Imo State, killed two police officers, carted away three AK47 rifles and set ablaze a police patrol vehicle.

They should be thoroughly investigated and punished appropriately when found guilty.
There is self determination, there is armed insurrection and then there is pure criminality. These are not the same and should not be mixed into one by both sides.

Self determination is a fundamental right. When it becomes an insurrection the right is vacated for conflict and force/violence should be expected in return. However if these folks go about killing and disarming law enforcement officers this smacks of criminality and even peaceful agitators and ordinary citizens are no longer safe.

The people of the south east must decide how they want to play this and tow the side of peaceful agitation. It is cerebral, more effective and will elicit wider sympathy and support beyond borders.

Violence will always occur when communication breaks down completely. This must not be allowed to happen on both sides of the divide.
