Entrepreneurship vs Job (8 years study of 2 Tenants in Nigeria)

Tenant (A) entrepreneur Married with 4 kids.

Tenant (B) Banker married with 2 kids.

Rent 350k per annum.

Tenant A started out as a cold room manufacturer and retailer and wife whole seller of food stuff (young couples).

Tenant B Banker and wife was a full-time house wife.

Tenant B bought EOD 7 years ago while Tenant A was not having Car.

5 years later, tenant A bought a small car while Tenant B bought another car for the wife.

Tenant A and B wives are graduates from Nigerian University.

Tenant A moved from cold room to recycling business and leather production while Tenant B moved to SBO in the Bank.

2 years ago, tenant A and B started rivalry because of parking space for their wives, suddenly Tenant A order a Toyota matrix for his wife too., the fight between both women escalated tenant B moved out to a new house at 500k per annum leaving tenant A.

After some few months tenant A called me to house warming party to their well tastefully finished 5 bedroom duplex.

At the beginning of their tenancy I was afraid that tenant A will be defaulting in payments but he never defaulted.

Tenant A now owns a recycling, leather (polythene) bags making business with 13 staffs. Millions of polythene bags are used daily in Nigeria.

This should serve as advice for Nigerian university graduates. DO NOT allow PAPER qualification becloud you and put unnecessary pride in your head, if the office job come fine. if not try your hand and head somewhere else.

This a 10 years observation.

All I see is someone who was focused on his goal and planned his life within his means not minding his neighbour's life style. Not all entrepreneurs make it in life.

One of the best advice for Nigerian graduates. it reminds me of this Mr Omor video where he explains that he will not let his "graduate" status get into his head so as to see a particular legit and well-paying job as demeaning

The first step to clear thinking, is to declutter your mind from:

- political junk
- circular news
- dumb lyrics
- mimetic desires
- internet debates
- sport fanaticism

The second step is to take long slow walks (without music)...

You want to work for someone and stay in a rented apartment?

I am a born hustler (legit) that don't believe in employment. I prefer the rough road to wealth and freedom than the smooth path to relative poverty.

Though there is nothing wrong with being an employee, only few employees understand that no their lifespan within employment is relatively short. These wise employees don't just lavish their salaries on frivolity thinking that they have arrived, they invest in themselves, properties and even businesses.

But in Nigeria where take home pay doesn't really take one home, it is challenging for an employee to invest part of their salaries due to its relative meagre nature.

All being said, life of a hustler (self employed) may be rough for a few years but is highly rewarding if the hustler is focused, visionary and committed to his hustle without letting distraction set in.

All these one size fits all advice sef. Do you know what financial investments Tenant B is into? People in the banking sector prefer to do business in an area they understand, which is finance. Dangote does physical product business, Elumelu does financial business. Its about choice and where your competency lies.

As for building, there are people who live in rented apartments in the city but build mansions in their villages. I can work in Lagos and live in a rented apartment, but build my duplex in Jos because that's where I want to retire to. There varied reasons why people live the way they do.
