We begged them to even take our petrol for free, according to our minister for petroleum.

Just as we begged them to build railway for them, according to Amaechi.

Nigeria, the only country which have everything in abundance but wallow in abject poverty.
You and the ten people who liked your post misread the article.

Here is what is happening in brief.

In our neighbours, fuel costs above N300 naira.

Here in Nigeria, fuel is sibsidsed to N162 naira

As a result, there is massive smuggling of fuel to neighbouring countries

But anytime governments in Nigeria, past or present want to end the smuggling of fuel by removing subsides completely...not the partial removal they always do, you guys will protest, and the government then has to bring back subsidy.

The solution is simple. Remove subsidy. Let the marketers set the price OF FUEL. Yes, fuel will cost above n300 per liter, but ALL THE SMUGGLING WOULD STOP.

BUHARI people enjoying our subsidies
1.This thing has been happening log before Buhari took over.

2.Everytime Buhari (and to be fair all our past leaders since IBB TO GEJ) trY to remove subsidy completely, you guys complain, so we get a partial removal all the time....leaving fuel cheaper than our neighbours.

3.Of course, smuggling resuults and we lose billions

4.All this would stop if Nigerians stop backing fuel subsidy and allow it to go. But you guys don't want to pay N300 per liter and above for fuel...so we keep on having this issue.

This country is a joke!
Femi Falana once advised them to build fuel stations in these countries and dispense to them like Venezuela did in America. No way!
They didn't listen. Same old tales from one administration to another. Reason is simple: na "them" get the tankers.
WE ARE GOING THROUGH THE MOST UNCIVILIZED ERA SINCE THE CREATION OF NIGERIA.
It won't stop the smuggling

Funny you should mention Venezuela. As at 2018, THAT country was losing billions of money monthly due to the same smuggling issue affecting Nigeria.

Venezuelan petrol costs the equivalent of N40-50 per liter. As a result , massive smuggling occurs in that country from Venezuela to its neighbours who sell fuel at higher prices due to them not subsidising fuel like Venezuela....and Venezuela loses 18 billion dollars annually as a result.

The same thing is happening in Nigeria, and using your solution won't stop it. It did not stop it for Venezuela.

The solution is simple...subsidy must go. Prices of fuel will rise as a result...but we won't lose money due to smuggling, as it won't make financial sense to smuggle fuel

Right now fuel costs n162 per liter in Nigeria. Outside it costs N300 and above. Hence smuggling happens.

You are using one-third of all of Nigeria’s forex expenditure to SUBSIDIZE imported petrol, then smuggle it to neighboring nations...
So we are using our scarce foreign currency reserves to subsidize FOREIGN refineries, their FOREIGN workers, and FOREIGN countries. SMH
>
And the problem is, when you tell them the solution, remove subsidy, people will abuse you from head to toe.

Meanwhile we keep on subsidisng fuel for non-citizens.

In Cameroon, fuel is N463
In Benin , fuel is N367
In Togo, fuel is n312.
In Niger , fuel is N370
IN Nigeria, fuel is N162 per liter.

And we expect that there would be no smuggling? (Almost like expecting a lion to suddenly turn vegetarian)

No, it is not corruption.

Fuel in Nigeria costs N162 per liter. In all the other countries mentioned in the article...fuel costs above N300. (In Cameroon, it costs ABOVE N400)

So tell me, how won't smuggling happen?

All because Nigerians want cheap fuel, meanwhile thanks to decades of cheap fuel, our refienreis don't work, and we are losing billions in forex subsidsing fuel for smugglers who 'export' it to other countries...fuel we import in the first place.

Subsidy has to go completely.

How to stop petroleum smuggling. Sell it at market price the end.
That's the solution

But anytime this is suggested, Nigerians will call you an 'opressor of the masses'. You will be cursed and abused , and called an evil person.

Subsidy is an addiction in Nigeria. That's why no government has taken the plunge to remove subsidies.

okay...

The reason why we don't have working refienreis is because subsides on fuel means that fuel is sold(and has been sold ) at too low a price to keep said refienreis profitable

Also, NNPC workers get paid whether refienreis work or not, since NNPC is a goviernment company. This has a wonderful effect on productivity.

NNPC also underpays the refienreis to process fuel, as part of the ways it keeps fuel at a low price , which does wonders for the profitability of the refinereis.

Or how do you rationalize how one person(Dangote) is successfully building a refinery yet the GIANT ANT of Africa can't seem to pull it off too!?

Dangote is building a refienry with 60-70% of the money coming in from loans from banks local and interantional. And the banks gave him the loans because if the refienry messes up, they just take over his other assets, and pay back their loan money themselves.

NNPC cannot do that because since 1988, they have been selling fuel at a price too low to keep their refienreis proftiably running. That is why we have bad refienreis.

But because Nigerians want cheap fuel....

And anytime government tries to do the right thing and remove fuel subsides completely, people protest. Right now, fuel should be costing above N300 per liter . Instead it costs N162 per liter. And even if we refined it at home, it would cost above n200 per liter if not more.

Simple soluton to this matter....allow the marketers sell fuel at the price they set.

YES...fuel will cost N300 per liter or more

YES...APC and Buhari are evil

But
1 We SAVE MONEY...

2.We attract investment for more refinereis.

3.We end smuggling of our subsidised fuel.

You don't want subsidy removed. You want cheap fuel. I get that.

But consider that fuel costs higher in our neighbouring countries...and as a result...smuggling becomes attractive...meaning we end up subsidisng fuel for not only Nigeria, but for a large part of West Africa.

And we don't have the money to keep on doing that.

It is time it stopped.

This is why smuggling happens

In Cameroon, fuel is N463
In Benin , fuel is N367
In Togo, fuel is n312.
In Niger , fuel is N370
IN Nigeria, fuel is N162 per liter.

And thus a smuggler can make big money selling Nigerian subsidsed fuel at higher prices in these countries...money that won't benefit the average Nigerian.

If you think that is fair...then wow.

Joysticks:
Government is paying subsidy to fuel markets only for the fuel to be diverted to neighbouring countries. The scandal that rocked the petroleum sector where some petroleum marketers were collecting subsidy money and not supplying Petro to Nigerians are still not prosecuted.
A lot of our Leaders, both Civilian and Military, have Mini-Refinery outside Nigeria, mostly in neighbouring Countries..
These Criminals deliberately allowed Nigerian Refinery to go into disrepair, so that we can continue to import PMS from their own Refinery
Has anyone wondered, despite all the mouthy-promise of Buhari, during his Campaign, he has not built a single Refinery in his six years of Governance?
Are we surprised that he prefers to pipe our Gas and Crude Oil to Niger Republic, to be refined and brought back to Nigeria, and we then pay subsidy on that PMS
?

These Criminal Leaders want to ensure that Nigeria depends on PMS coming from their own Refinery located along the West African Countries.
To add insult to our injury, sometimes they dont even supply the PMS but demand and get "subsidy" on PMS they did not supply!
And when they bring-in the PMS, they are the brains behind the smuggling ring that smuggles the PMS out of Nigeria again.

These are not the small-small Smugglers, these big-time criminals Smuggle PMS out of Nigeria in Tankers of 45,000Ltrs and above.
They have a deal with Security Agents and Custom Officers, so the smuggling goes smoothly and everyone smiles to the Bank while ordinary Nigerians suffer

Until we begin to execute our Criminal Leaders, this country cannot get better.
They are Vampires and will suck this country into oblivion.

Removing the 'subsidy' is not a solution, it is just "punishing the wrong people, the poor masses", for the sins of the Criminal Elites and Cabals
Even if we remove subsidy (that one is a scam in itself), and the PMS costs higher in Nigeria, they will simply raise the selling prices of the smuggled product, outside Nigeria.
Petrol used to sell for 95K (Yes, Ninety Five Kobo per Litre) not too long ago and they said if we remove subsidy and make it #1.15 kobo, Smuggling will stop but it is #170 /Ltr now and Smuggling is still thriving
. undecided

What we should be doing is stipulating Death Penalty for "economic sabotage", for offenses like smuggling PMS across border and finding a way to tackle the "Fuel Mafias" that own the foreign, Nigerian owned Refineries that the Marketers buy the Fuel from, when they import it.
- We must seize and nationalize those Refineries, wherever they are located because they were built with our looted funds.
- We must also build New Refineries to refine for local consumption and export, if we have excess.
- We should sack everyone working at our Three Refineries that are taking-in Crude Oil but dont produce any refined Petrol in the past few years (What are they doing with the Crue oil they collect, if not sell it on the black market! And we still pay these criminals salary o! shocked )
- We must execute any Customs, NNPC, any Security Agent and individual who exports Nigeria's PMS outside the country.

But all these are easy to say.
Those who are supposed to propose and implement such laws are the Smugglers and Criminals themselves and they are in Goverment high positions as well.
Nigeria seems doomed to self destruct very soon

Our Government know exactly where to position their fight against this smuggling. More than 40% of smuggling activities take place in the Northeastern part of Nigeria and Mubi in Adamawa State is one of the biggest hub. If they can stop smuggling activities in Adamawa. They must have crippled activities in a significant amount.

All he said is pure facts..
NNPC has always cried out about the smuggling and how it cost them more billions to subsidize...

Even if we begin to produce fuel locally (dangote) the fuel should be sold at international price which government has no control of ..the same way government doesn't have control of crude oil price....but the bad news is that the standard price is higher than N200...so if government choose to pay dangote subsidies to reduce the price expect the smuggling to continue...

The final solution is to remove subsidies..that the only way...
Once that is done even if it is still be smuggled (which will reduce cuz the buiness would have been ruined). It won't cost Nigeria our scarce Forex..
Everybody wins
