Rauf Aregbesola, minister of interior, says the fugitives who escaped from the custodial centre in Owerri, Imo state capital, will be pardoned if they voluntarily return.

The minister gave the assurance while inspecting the centre on Tuesday following an attack on the facility.

He said unlawful escape from custody is a crime but assured that willful returnees will be exempted from prosecution.

The minister said he will ensure that those involved in the attack are brought to book.

Aregbesola said the federal government will leave no stone unturned to fish out perpetrators of what he described as a “dastardly act”.

He said: “Unlawful escape from custody is a crime but government in its magnanimity will grant amnesty to prisoners who willfully return.

“They will no longer be charged with unlawful escape but only for the initial crimes that took them to prison. So we urge all escapees to return before they are caught on the run.”

Seye Oduntan, the deputy controller of correctional service in charge of Owerri custodial centre, said 36 inmates stayed back after the attack while six persons had so far returned.

The police have accused the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) of being responsible for the prison break and the attack on a police command headquarters in the state.

If Aregbesola himself had this kinda opportunity to escape from prison as an inmate, would he voluntarily return to the prison?

I don’t think that Nigeria has a good record and database for all the inmates

What NNAMDI KANU Meant when he said by the time he is through, Nigeria will be like Somalia.

He was cheered by his supporters when he threatened that by the time he is done, Nigeria will be worse than Syria. But unfortunately his gullible brainwashed Supporters didn't ask him which part of Nigeria will be worse than Syria. His gullible Supporters thought the entire Nigeria will be affected by his terrorism. They forgot that during the civil war every part of Nigeria didn't feel the war. Life was going smoothly apart from south east where the war was fought and some part of south south. They forgot that despite the more dreaded boko haram activities, only the north east is badly hit and before the coming of this administration the north west. Boko Haram activities or terrorism didn't affect south.

His supporters are not aware that whatever system they want to apply, full blown war or guerrilla, only the south east region will feel it most. The activities of ESN Unknown Gunmen are still at its infancy stage and see the number of deaths and properties destroyed. See the number of criminals released from prison to the society. So which region will be like Syria? I am sure Nigeria will move on. That one is a given. Nigeria will only spend money on weapon and technology to tame the ESN Gunmen. But it is the south easterners that a Miscreant far away london want to make become worse than Syria.

Ndi igbo, this is how boko haram started. And more than 13years after that, Nigeria still day carry go.

No sane Nigerian in a Nigerian jail would voluntarily return after escape..

All police is going to do is arrest innocentees to replace the jailers..

Take who knew you were there and saved you serious than who just realised that you left where they want you to be and wish to help you when you are not there.

Nigeria is a joke. What's the need returning if they will still be pardoned? They've pardoned themselves.

Even the prison is not safe, and you're asking escaped inmates to return. Can you assure them they will not face similar situation again?

Anything can happen. If your Demi god, an international thief cheif James Onanefe Ibori could be discharge and acquitted of all his count charge then in Federal high court Asaba.

If he couldn't serve all his jail term finish after being convicted and jailed abroad, they can also be pardoned as said
