Grade 2? Pre-schools kid in Kenya can read and write in English. 3yr old kids go to Nursery - and in Junior pre-school they must read - in English - and Pre-Primary - they cannot get to grade 1 without reading. Mother tongue is taught in rural areas as a language/subject...not a language of instruction.

Pre-school kids in some schools are in class by 6 AM.

It generally expected that 4 yr old should be able to read and write - and speak English.
