Actually, the biggest problem of Nigeria is northen Nigeria. U see those people, they can't compete in a merit based economy. It is why u rarely see them in private sector such as tech industry. They only do very well in sectors that have govt influence.

If oil is taken away, South West will do very well, followed by South East. The entire southern Nigeria has massive human resources that are productive more. That is not really the case with North because they have denied their people exposure and education.

How many times do u see northerner kid win mathematics competitions? How often do u see them win private scholarships? How often do u see their names abroad winning awards or breaking academic and productive records? They aren't mentally competitive due to their religion and lack of exposure and education. Sadly, they are the ones running the country. Since the Civil War, northerners have occupied most of the vital agencies that determine the economy of this country.

I always say it that the war the igbos lost was a war lost by all southerners. Check out top 10 startups in Nigeria, u will never see anyone started by Northern youths. They are dominated by southern youths. Without oil, southern Nigeria will survive very well. Our human resources is veru competitive.
excellent submission.

The simple reason why states don't have enough money

1.All states rely on revenue from oil, and the oil we produce earns enough revenue to sustain a nation of 20 million people, not 200 million people...unless the oil price is above $134 per barrel (which is not going to happen even if we all fast and pray for the next 5 years)

2.All states have low tax to gdp ratios. No state has a tax to gdp ratio above 4%. At the federal level it is 6% We don't notice it because we use loans and revenue from oil when oil is sky high to cover the cracks.

3.As the BBC put it, 30% of the people who are supposed to pay taxes pay taxes. When your tax revenue is low, your overall revenue is low.

4.State civil services are bloated because the only way governors can be seen to be 'performing' is by creating more jobs...in the civil service, often at the expense of the state treasury (and governors who try to reduce civil service numbers soon find, as a former governor of Osun found out...that it means you get voted out come election day...even if you have a good explanation why)

5.We are not an industrial nation...meaning we cannot export goods and services whose prices we control. We are a resource dependent naiton, dependent on resources whose prices we don't control. And when the price of the resource we sell falls...as has been happening with oil since 2014...we end up losing lots of cash.

The solution is

1.Short term, we have to remove subsides, and expand the tax base(expand the tax base, not raise taxes). Even if it means a flat tax of 10% of montly income for everyone, inclucing street beggars...so be it.

2.Long term, we have to take the hard way of prosperity, by becoming industrial....and becoming an exporter of induatrial goods. It isn't just by building factories....the factories themselves must export goods for lots of cash.

Modified: Here is an excerpt from a BBC report from 2019(source here)
Who are the over 70% not paying taxes? I suggest you tell your BBC to stop the deception and get real. Even woodcutters pay tax in Nigeria. Maybe the high and mighty who have politician friends and are therefore exempt from the hassle of taxes. Nigerians are even overtaxed.

[quote author=Oluwamarc post=100805570]This country is her own problem.

Ministries and agencies in both state and local government give out appointments, not to the most capable hands ,but out of prejudice, favouritism and tribal sentiments. No wonder there's a high rate of unproductivity in these spheres than in the private sectors, because what these government employees do is to come to work late, close early and receive salaries at the end of the month. And sometimes, when these salaries are delayed by their respective state governments, it usually ends with serious protests and unrest.
what I'm driving at here is that, We need yo make our civil service an industry of productivity and not salary collecting agencies. Being productive can even aid in complementing governments finances in other areas, But when employees in these spheres just come and go to collect salary at the end of the month, then it'll become parasitic to governments endeavours.
Also, corruption in this agencies are TOP NOTCH, there's this belief system that ''THE OGAS AT THE TOP HAVE TAKEN THEIRS, SO WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO US, WE TOO WILL DIVIDE AND SHARE, abandoning little projects that would have enhanced development and even create more jobs.

Conclusively, corruption can still be seen as the parent cause of everything I've analysed so far, cos with out it, funds meant for what they are meant for will be used for what they are supposed to be used for appropriately. KILL CORRUPTION, BRING NIGERIA BACK TO LIFE! SIMPLE.

For almost two years now, FG workers have been at home....
Before most of them only cluster in office, envy each other, gossip, buy things in credit against salary and go home.

Nope, he is right, but they forget that we have massive unemployment in the country with less than 15% of the population earning above 40,000. These 15% carry the remaining 85%.

Govt should create environment that will drive employment to atleast 45% of the population earning above 40,000, then increase taxation to 10%

You're looking at it from an angle of formal tax. Do you know even petty traders pay tax? There are these local officials who accost them with authorisation from the LG to collect tax. Whereas tax should be for businesses with a capital above 100k and 5 years old according to our laws.
It's not the fault of the business owners that our govt is inefficient in all things.

It is finished!!! Very soon they will be resigning. Water don past garri. I am not surprised, a government and a party in 2015 at the onset, took about six months to form a cabinet. eventually when the cabinet was formed, we only saw most worn-out brains, tribalism and religious minded fanatics. There is no way man can cheat nature. show me your friends I will tell you who you. Show me the government cabinet I will tell you what will be the outcome. Nigeria is heading the Zembabuwe direction and will soon overtake them.

Your thinking is a scam to your existence, who should drive the economy? The Federal Government or the States? The Federal Government only has one main source of revenue oil & gas, whilst the States have at least 36 different commodities, go figure, your biased thought process is what is stalling you from prospering.

Even if we go back to Agriculture, it does not change the fact that the prices of our agricultural products, like oil, are not controlled by us, they are controlled by external factors. If the price falls below a certain level, we would still be rushing to take loans.

As an example...between 1977-78, Uganda had a coffee boom...high coffee prices meant that Uganda had a lot of frex...and the high prices came from agricultural disasters affecting the coffee crop in other countries. Once the edisasters passed....Uganda was back to square one.

All of Africa's agric producers are like Nigeria reilant on loans and foeign aid for survival because the price of the agricutural produce are usually not enough to sustain these countries.

What Nigeria needs to do to be proseprous...is simple...use its raw materials...oil inclusive...to make exportable industrial products. That is what proseprous countries do.

The 1960's were not necessarily a good time. Yes, agric, but most poeople were not rich and it was an educated urban elite that benefitted most from the revenue we earned from agric.(And our populaiton is much higher than in 1963 these days, and most of these people, even in the North, don't want to be famrers. Also we don't have the guaranteed markets of the 1960's,,....infact they were gone by thge 1970's. We used oil money to hide the problem...countries like New Zealand had to go thtrhugh some tough times and major changes in the 1970's)

Also, agric works if you mechanize it. Agricultuire in Nigeria is not mechanized at all.
You didn't quite get my point. The points you made are valid.

The idea is to make modernize our practise of Agriculture (making it 21st century compliant) whilst utilizing our other resources including man power...who says we can't start manufacturing like china? Why can't we develop our service based economy? (Easy) oil money has prevented us from truly diversifying our economy.

Look @ what Rwanda and Kenya are accomplishing without oil, amazing!

From your name, you are Urhobo so stop hiding behind Niger Delta because there is nothing like that. Igbo land makes up more than 80% of Rivers state and 50% of Delta state. The oil and gas in all Igbo land including unexploited areas is the biggest reserve in the world, not even in Africa. Your land Urhobo which is even part of present-day Biafra, though will be decided through a popular referendum by the Urhobo people does not have 1/20th of the oil in the whole of Igboland. Some of you should desist from Igbo and Biafra hatred because it the end, you are doing your health no good.
