After 1.Rxe6 if 1...fxe6 2.Rf3 and the queen is pinned. After 2...Qxf3 3.Qxf3+ the extra material and unsafe king should be decisive.

1...Qxe6 is similar.

It won't work. Black would simply ignore you and if you capture black can always recapture with the e-pawn.

This is one of the most beautiful chess puzzles. First move alone is not important, you need to see the full line.
