UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin says the 12 clubs involved in the Super League have "spat in the face of football."

“The players that play in the Super League will be banned from playing in the World Cup and Euros.

"We will take all the sanctions that we can."

UEFA chief Ceferin: "I cannot stress more strongly how everyone is united against this disgraceful, self-serving proposals, fuelled by greed above all else.

"We urge everyone to stand tall with us as we do everything in our power to ensure this never ends up in fruition."

UEFA also approved a change to its Champions League format to favour the elite clubs in its ongoing reforms; billed to take place from 2024:

- The Champions League will have 36 teams, instead of 32.

- New spots for elite clubs that fail to qualify, i.e. it will be based on their past performances in the Champions League.

- One league rather than groups

- Best 8 to reach the knockouts

- Other teams to qualify through new rounds of play-offs

- Every club guaranteed 10 games, thereby increasing revenue.

angry angry

Nonsense threat
So you mean that players like
Messi
Ronaldo
Pogba
Mount
Hazard
Ibrahimovic
Lukaku
Rashord
Neymar
And co. won't play in World Cup, UEFA should better drop their pride and negotiate with the 12 big teams to find a compromise.

These people are really fighting this "Super League" thing with everything they've got. Na American model of sports these guys just wan adopt.

In the US, all their top 4 national sporting leagues --NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL -- once you're there, you're there for life. You win all your games o, lose all your games o. No relegation, no demotion/promotion. I wonder what kinda system that is.

Make the American sports team owners carry their yeye biased system of sports comot. Make dem no come corrupt the global heartthrob of sports - Football.

Seems some ppl do not want to picture the far reaching consequences of this development. Mind you the ESL was never about the competition, this will be all about money, money, money to milk the game of football as much as possible.

Like a get rich quick system which condemns hardwork or due process, in this case it will be to hell with all the football teams who will never make the league.

The founding teams (12 or 15) will never be relegated irrespective of how they play.

The financial gap between elite teams and the unlucky ones will seriously affect the transfer market. Football will be all about money going forward which will breed more corruption, eliminate competition, ensure that these teams will dominate whatever is left of football going forward.

Mid table and struggling teams will have to fold up as they will only be chasing shadows.

The thrill that comes within the domestic leagues and UEFA competitions will no longer be there or here.

Why will anyone want to watch these teams play each other week in week out? What about longevity? The excitement that comes with big teams from different leagues playing each other once in a while?

Yes surely, viewers will be thrilled but after 2, 3 years it becomes repetitive, no more surprises, see finish, a money generating enterprise.

*Which is why the actual football fans - fans who support clubs in their local, fans who follow their teams not because they are popular, who have history with these teams, coaches, critics are strongly against it. Football should not just be about money, yes you need money to run these clubs but immediately it becomes solely about generating money kiss the game goodbye.

#UEFA is only crying because they've been dribbled not because they care about Football.

UEFA isn’t incharge of World Cup so let FIFA decide that not u speaking like dictators

There no law that says another league cannot emerge and work to improve football. Club football Isn’t limited to UEFA if a better framework for another/higher league can work why not?

However if this will bring more confusion than help to football because of a few selfish interests it should be stopped and discouraged.

If it is detrimental to football FIFA will never support it. Football has grown too big and advanced for some rascal billionaires to disrupt it by dictating to others. If it’s not agreeable it will/shud be scrapped.

Initial gragra.
Football is all about entertaining the fans... Remove the fans from UEFA and they are nothing. If the fans wants the league to stay, it will, with or without UEFA.

...Moreover who is UEFA to determine who participates in a world cup or not... FIFA has now become a puppet to the ever corrupt and monopolistic UEFA.

Football is now business first, before fans or passion.

CoVID19 has really delth with these super clubs...They need something new to cope with their financial obligation.

Barcelona for example, makes money largely from fans and tourists...now, they can't make such money and they have bills to settle.

I don't blame these clubs opting for Super League.

As for this threat from UEFA grin grin grin it is a super joke...

They will tell us their jurisdiction over Country football....They will tell us if they do release player for CHAN for example, and will not bring up excuses that it is not FIFA agreed international tournament.

They will tell us if it's their headache for countries to decided who represents them at World Cup.

Legal battles ahead!

Serious power play going on
The Super League clubs announced they had already commenced legal action in a letter sent by the group to FIFA President Gianni Infantino and UEFA counterpart Aleksander Ceferin saying the Super League has already been underwritten by funding of 4 billion euros ($5.5 billion) from a financial institution.

'We are concerned that FIFA and UEFA may respond to this invitation letter by seeking to take punitive measures to exclude any participating club or player from their respective competitions,' the Super League clubs wrote to Infantino and Ceferin

'Your formal statement does, however, compel us to take protective steps to secure ourselves against such an adverse reaction, which would not only jeopardize the funding commitment under the Grant but, significantly, would be unlawful. For this reason, SLCo (Super League Company) has filed a motion before the relevant courts in order to ensure the seamless establishment and operation of the Competition in accordance with applicable laws.'

'It is our duty, as SLCo's board members, to ensure that all reasonable actions available to protect the interests of the Competition and our stakeholders are duly taken, given the irreparable damage that would be suffered if, for any reason, we were deprived of the opportunity to form promptly the Competition and distribute the proceeds of the Grant,'
