Looking at the competition: Lewandowski would normally be seen as a stiff opposition, but his injury has definitely derailed his chase for the award. As it is, Mbappe and Neymar - especially Mbappe - seem the biggest threats, and Mbappe would definitely be the favorite if PSG win the Champions League. But that's not a given. If Barca do win the La Liga and PSG don't win the UCL, them Messi would probably be in pole position.

Of course the award isn't given till the end of the year, so the continental tournaments would also play a big role. I'm just saying based on the competition right now, Messi's chances would be boosted if Barca do win the La Liga.
