nograv:The point is: did it stop Lagos progressing then? If Lagos could engaged in massive infrastructural revamp then and still have the liberty to do free medical services for people with visual impairment, with glasses donated to the patients, then, I don't see it stagnant because the same thing occurred against it especially now that it's created multiple revenue generating sources making it much more financially stable than it ever was in the past. Don't confuse yourself, Lagos ain't stopping progression for anything: it's a moving train. May God continue to bless Lagos state Eko Oni Baje o... Aa tunbo maa dara si ni |

nograv:How? This is not 1999 when Lagos state was at the mercy of the FG for every kobo. Tinubu saw the danger and vulnerability when Lagos state was generating measly N500 million per month and deice the best plan ever to slowly and deliberately achieve financial independence. From a very poor state with the largest population in Nigeria generating just N500 million in 1999 to almost independent with N418 Billion IGR, more than the entire North, SS and the SE. Lagos state is the least dependent state on FG allocation so I don't know exactly what you are talking about. |

plaindealer:I do know what I am talking about as I have lived in major cities like London and New York. Both were global giants outdoing any other major cities on almost every measure. Number of billionaires FDI Number of global company Head Quarters etc All it took was the Coronavirus to lay both of these cities low. Lagos is indeed increasingly becoming less dependent on Federal allocations, but as I pointed out to the younger poster it isnt independent yet. All it would take is similar budget shortfalls, probably combined with an external economic shock to push Lagos into decline again. London is currently begging the national uk govt for funds. While New York went from a slight budget surplus to watching a massive deficit grow as the virus kicked in. These cities started from a far superior economic position than Lagos and you're acting as if Lagos is immune to any economic headwind. Sorry bros it isnt.. Cities benefit from clustering and agglomeration effects, but they are surprisingly more fragile than you would think.. You're entitled to be proud of Lagos, but dont confuse pride with being a substiture for economic realities.. |

PHAYOL81:did it stop Lagos progressing then? Yes it did, what part the Lagosian economy stagnating from the early 1980s to the 1990s did you miss ![]() As I mentioned in an earlier post, foreign architects like Rem Kool Haas were visiting Lagos to engage in poverty tours, to see a major city with a significant population devoid of any proper centralised govt. What makes you think that wouldnt happen again?? Mtcheww.. As I said earlier, Lagos is increasingly less dependent on the federal allocation, but it isnt out of the woods yet. Not by a long shot.. You obviously havent spent time abroad. Where is the 24/7 electricity, world class water treatment and sewage infrastructure. Metro rail is still under construction and the road system is still inadequate especially in Lekki. Lets not blind ourselves to Lagos' challenges.. |

nograv: nograv:You said the FG could starve Lagos state of funds again and I asked you to explain how not to post irrelevant essay. Just explain to us in clear terms how the FG could starve Lagos state of funds. |

plaindealer:Go back and reread my earlier posts and understand why due to politics Lagos ended up being left out in the cold in the first place.. Northerners only every engage in public spending for the SW and more importantly Lagos to maintain their influence and carry favour for elections. It helps them maintain their political dominance. As Yoruba are increasingly turning their backs on Northern elites ala sunday igboho. Northerners may abandon the South West much like they have abandoned the South East, if they cannot carry political influence there via public spending. You have implicitly accepted Lagos isnt financially independent of federal allocations. So if funding falls due to politics, which is very much is possible. Lagos could then stagnate. Combine that with an economic shock like covid19 and watch how quickly that would occur.. Now prove to me why this could not occur...? Or how Lagos can weather any economic storm, given its limited economic foundations..? (Relatively poor infrastructure, weak institutions and current lack of economic muscle when compared to other large cities globally of a similar size) |

nograv:Mr abroad traveller, you seem to make a big mount out of a little mole hill. Lagos was neglected and suffered because it was under the rules of individuals focusing their interest on creating another city right in the late 70s till the late 90s as I stated; and that's a different ball game from the time it got into the hands of people caring for its growth since the turn of the century despite still suffering the same neglect from the FG. Both situations had different results. The first incident saw its sharp decline because those at the heart of its management were only enriching themselves while the other has seen its resurrection into the limelight of progressive development simply because these set are developments-oriented. And how much did you know about the abroad you boast about How many countries have you visited Anyway, that's not the point of contest now. You should know Lekki peninsula generally is a new development and to burst your bubbles, there are developments around Lagos now with 24/7 power supply, water and sewage treatment plants, wastes to energy plants and quality standards of living. Perhaps, you might have to google Alaro city, Mayeegun beach estate, Osolu city, iibc, orange island, periwinkle island, Ikoyi foreshore estate, diamond island, upcoming Adron Eko city, Carlton estate, banana island and the almighty Eko Atlantic City among others.Chill buddy, Lagos is not there yet but it's definitely bridging the gap between itself and a true smart city development. And that's what that matters. Again, Lagos would never experience stagnation because its positioning itself for self sufficiency. |

PHAYOL81:All of the above and you couldnt answer the simple of question of why Lagos may not stagnate again? Mountain out of a mole hill? Thousands died due to the needless criminality of that period. I lost an Uncle to armed robbers who invaded his home during that era. I lost an Aunt to a car accident caused by poor roads back then. So the economic crisis of that era certainly wasnt a mole hill. Also if London and New York can stagnate, why cant Lagos? You even noted Lagos currently isnt self sufficient as it is merely "positioning itself for self sufficiency." You have exhausted my patience. The younger gentlemen earlier showed more intelligence and understanding than yourself. You poked at how well travelled I am. I am a software engineer and a financier. I come from a well to do mercantalist family although I am not a patch on my Grandfather & Father who achieved more than I possibly will. In terms of major cities, almost every one. From the Europe, Middle East, North America and Asia. The only region I have not travelled is Latin America and India. Never got round to the former and because of how the latter treats our people I have no interest in the latter.. You realise my family live in Ikoyi and Lekki. Banana Island, along with property off Bourdillon and Phase 1. Private companies providing limited power generation and bore holes providing water alongside untreated sewage pouring into the Lagoon cannot be compared to centralised ultilities in cities like London. Also do less fortunate Lagosians in parts of the mainland have access to 24/7 electricity or clean tap water as their poor equivalents do in London? No.. So please stop with your nonsense. What cities have you seen outside of Nigeria? Probably just Eko and yet you talk.. Have good day. All future posts will be ignored.. |

nograv:Oga, you have a closedown mind rigid on nonsense. Read back at what I wrote and realized I answered your question about non happening stagnation you want for Lagos. I gave examples of two moments the state had trouble before and why one affected disasterously while the other didn't stop it moving forward. For the record, London, New York didn't stagnate anytime even though there were times the two had their patches but till today, they retained their economic importance despite many new world cities emerging with diverse uniqueness. And Mr Borehole, I gave you certain samples of places with centralized sewage systems and water treatment facilities, yet you still yapped around about borehole. Better don't let the hate on Lagos give you severe BP. Bye |
