I don't know if it's just me or maybe my network but most Devs I know seem to be more crazy about working for startups than big multinationals. I mean people would prefer companies like paystack, flutterwaves and andela than working at places like British tobacco, ExxonMobil, shell, pwc, Cognizant et Al as Devs.

I see Dev roles regularly on this companies career pages but I hardly meet Devs who work in such companies.

Why are Devs so crazy about startups? The work is ten times harder, hardly any job security. You can be sacked at anytime. Extreme pressure and very horrible pay with no pension benefits or severance package.

Those big companies you mentioned don’t have a lot of product in the market(I mean software market).

Many times they employ expert majorly for maintenance purpose and maybe a one off development team to build a product.

Many software dev in those company works are majorly expert level work and they don’t really have space to hire people to train or give space to grow, so many young devs don’t look forward to them except you have gained ground and your ready to chop money.

As a young dev startups can stress your life for peanuts but would give you a big room to improve your skill set and confidence. So starting out many devs look forward into them.

On a lite note another angle, start up give young devs insight about how company you see everyday are made and raised

It's actually normal.

These old companies hardly recruit. They were in Nigeria before Andela came and made Software Engineering/Development exciting.

They also use old stack and can hardly change their stacks which is understandable.

New companies recruit like mad! About getting sacked. You need a job to get sacked in the first place.

Startups are fast paced and uses new tools which is exciting to most young people and also the exact reason why many employees in startups are youths.

Pay stack and co are just like our own Facebook, Google, Netflix et al. here. Everyone wants to in these companies in America but people don't really fancy Microsoft et al.

With start-ups, one is challenged to learn more. But, it gets to a level, I wouldn't pick a startup company in place of an established multinational.

In all sincerity, there shouldn't be anything like old or new stack. But what I mean is, programming languages/tools that are no longer getting attention like before, e.g. C, C++, Jquery and the likes.

Even Java is not as popular as when we didn't have nodejs.

Java still has the second largest share after PHP for backend. It's the language of all enterprise software. Enterprise platform crms and Erps are also written in Java. Hype isn't reality.

I don't think he meant to say Java is no longer popular. What he meant to say is Java has declined in popularity with the advent of Node js, which is correct.

Can you atleast provide where you are getting all this Information from?

When last did British tobacco, ExxonMobil, shell, pwc put out a vacancy to hire software engineers?

The multinationals in tech are Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix and Google.

The non tech multinationals are always hiring devs too https://careers.bat.com/go/IT/1356201/?q=&sortColumn=referencedate&sortDirection=desc

Thats the career page for british american tobacco and there are tech roles listed. Last time I checked, there were like 5 fullstack developer roles but it seems devs arent interested in such jobs.

If the start up hammer, the staff go also hammer. Go ask the staff and developers at Paystack.

Startups might not be an ideal environment to work in, particularly for juniors who are just getting started. Going into startups will only presume you are an expert since, unlike in an established organization where you have the opportunity to learn from very brilliant seniors. With a startup, you almost never have the opportunity. You won't have time for personal growth because one will be working nonstop.

Thermodynamics:
I hardly see any thing about python in any programming thread these days, does it mean that python is obsolete? I'm currently learning python.

Get out of Nigeria or learn data science and still leave the country if you truly want to succeed with Python. Outside of this part of the world, there are companies that pay Python engineers handsomely.
Because of this sort of "all-must-be-worked-out-now" attitude and the fact that most businesses in Nigeria like to utilize technologies that would allow them to launch their products quickly, PHP being a good example of this, languages like Python are not very common. However, I believe that several businesses have started adopting best technological practices, requiring them to leverage tools outside of their usual toolbox.

Because those startups understand what developers need in terms of work-life balance, environment, remote work allowance, not just remuneration...
