Nobody likes to rack up bad stats I guess. They will consider their reputation as they seek to admit patients.
what stats? Wetin concern saving lives which is the primary purpose of hospitals and pursuing fancy statistics at the expense of human lives which is their primary responsibility?

Hospital don't turn sports competition looking for medals and stats.

Nigerians need to understand that there is such a thing as REFERRAL. Hospitals do not reject patients they refer them to facilities that are better equipped and referral is a known part of treatment. People need to be educated on how the healthcare system works. Forcing an ill-equipped hospital to take Kn a complex case is very wrong and will likely lead to worse morbidity or mortality.

You need to shut up for real.

They REJECT for two reasons
1. Police Report in cases of gunshot wounds out of the fear that trouble the police could create for them for treating an armed robber.

2. Over treatment deposits. Even if it is a life threatening situation, they will say bring money first.

Stop insulting people's intelligence.

It is only in Nigeria you see hospitals meant to save lives reject people ,sometimes this victims die at the entrance of the hospital gate because they were denied access into the hospital by the hospital management. No hospital in Benin ,or Togo tries that, their license will be withdrawn,it is against their law.

But in Naija ,hospitals will be rejecting people as if they do selective treatment .looking for those with minor cases of headache, body pain, malaria etc.

Same way Nigeria police behaves, they run away from armed robbers, terrorists, bandits, militants. But will be patrolling looking for yahoo boys, pickpockets, responsible citizens to arrest and extort, even meddling into issues of husband and wife quarrel.

Useless entities
Killing & arrest of armed robbers, kidnappers, bandits & other organised crime reported day in day out by the Police is not easy, they cannot do it all, despite lack of logistics & welfare, just like in a family you try your best but some relatives still think you are not doing enough & they castigate you, unlike these health staff who are reasonably paid, has a Union to protect their interest,if they embark on strike, their salary or whatever get increased but Police reverse is the case, even the promises during endsars saga nothing was done.
But don't beat your wife or assault her in any form & you still think when she or neighbors report you to Police it doesn't concern them ooo.
Although many do not know how the police functions, despite their education or the deprivations Police faces. They lay down their life to protect the people who hate them so much.So you can see, they are not useless as you said

you should've added this before your statements: 'In defense of the hospital staff ' angry

The hospital should've put up a notice saying they don't handle emergencies and only open to 'easy-to-handle' cases.

Very unprofessional

If a patient absconds then it shows the level of incompetence and insecure such hospital is, lives of patients in such hospital is unsafe thus it doesn't deserve the title of an hospital.

This is the reason why I do not regard any bitch who is a nurse or a doctor. These morons killed my uncle's wife for Portharcourt. A woman who just put to bed and has lost a lot of blood due to the CS operation she had. Nurses who were supposed to give her drip just left her and were busy chatting in the reception room until this woman passed away due to extreme dehydration. Upon all the thousands my uncle paid.

Too many evil people in Nigeria. Even the nurses are evil. sad The last time I went to a govt hospital, if you see the way they delayed me. As soon as I got the first aid and I was relieved, I ran to a specialist same day in another region. Very evil nurses. And the doctors arent loyal. They arent patient in the govt hospitals because they are rushing to "cut jobs" in private hospitals. Always in hurry. So, you wait endlessly for them cos they are always late, while the nurses keep bullying you. And finally when they majestically arrive, they rush you seriously while the nurses and matrons even bully you more. Very terrible set of humans. They actually made me hate the medical professions. I do not even have anytning inside me to encourage anyone I know to study or practise any medical profession in this nation called Nigeria. If you come from abroad, you are on your own. Better you do not come. I that used to encourage you to visit Naija is telling you to keep off if you value your life. I have told you the truth oooooo. Keep off! Buzz off!! Run away from Nigeria. This is a "useless" nation with useless leaders.
If the doctors are not loyal and nurses are evil, anytime you are ill or your relatives are sick, treat yourself...

Another thing I find hard to fathom is this police report of a thing.
I find it appalling. Even if the person were to be a criminal, and maybe in the course committing a crime, he/she gets injured, criminals are treated before being handed to the police.

Innocent people have suffered because of that unnecessary law.
I think the reasonable thing to do is to commence treatment, and while doing that, put a call across to police.

This act is not only sane but legal. The Compulsory Treatment of Accident and other Victims Act of 2015 mandates public hospitals to accept and treat such patients first, before making any demands.

However, as it relates to private care homes or hospitals, it may only be morally and or professionally binding on them to so do but this has no legal backing except otherwise revealed by further research.

Well, Nigerians are waking up, we are the real enforcement officers, not just the Government Agencies.

Patients abscond everywhere else to avoid paying, but hospitals by law are required to accept any critically ill patient at the emergency unit, even it is a criminal. In fact, if a patient who absconded during the last time he was treated shows up again at the same emergency unit with a critical injury and the staff recognize him, the hospital is still mandated to admit him again. It is only in Nigeria that this stupid attitude of rejecting patients happen. Travel out and see for yourself. No wonder the country is in shambles.

Well, most of those "countries" have systems that take care of health care, so patients don't have to abscond.

Health care is free in Most south America and European countries, while countries it isn't free have insurance.

But none of such exists in Nigeria here. shocked

What nonsense referral are you talking about in emergency cases?
Any hospital or doctor that can not administer first aid in emergency cases should not be called a hospital or Doctor.

If this is how referrals work in Nigerian hospitals, then, we are really in a huge mess! This is not standard referral. A critically ill patient is brought in by a private citizen without any first aid, and you expect the same private citizen to transport the patient to another hospital in the guise of a "referral?" Is that what you call a referral?

This hospital has an emergency unit. Immediately the patient is brought in, the hospital should accept the patient, apply first aid, make some examination/imaging and documentation, and if they now confirm that the patient needs to be referred to a different hospital, this hospital should PROVIDE transportation (either via an ambulance or whatsoever), accompanied with a doctor's report from the hospital the patient was initially seen. Now, that is a referral.

You don't attend to a patient at all. You don't even know the diagnosis/prognosis, no imaging or examination whatsoever. How do you know it is a case that you cannot handle? How do you know the right hospital to refer him to when he is not even diagnosed yet? How do you expect the private citizen who brought him in (who may be a good samaritan attending to his own private business) to have the resources to transport him to another hospital? No doctor's report showing anything! And you call that a referral!
Don't mind the ignoramus saying things he know nothing about.
How will a hospital refer a patient they know nothing about or what the patient is suffering from?
People like him will only learn when they or those close to them become victims.

All of u jumping to insult hospitals when they reject patients; don't worry; go and make money so that u can be treating people on credit. Do you know how expensive it is to run a hospital? Everyone who works in a hospital is paid a better salary compared to other sectors; even a cleaner that works in a hospital is paid better than a cleaner working in a bank.
Most people will just rush with someone to the hospital and expect to be treated free because they are poor.
All of you are hypocrites.... where u de work u de work free for people?
sometimes them go just pick accident victims from the road and expect hospitals to be treating them free. why don't you start donating your full salary so that they can be treated!!
it's always easy 2 judge?
Doctors are meant to save lives but they need to take care of their families too

Nigeria police is as useless as the "P" in Psychology.

Left for me,the entire Nigeria Police Force should be disbanded. Establishing community policing will best serve the people than those criminals in uniform.

Go to Cotonou next door to Nigeria, patients abscond from hospitals there all the time. Or ask anyone you know. Yet, they don't just reject patients at the emergency anyhow, even if such patients who absconded in the past show up again. They neither have insurance nor free healthcare.

When a patient in a critical condition who is in a coma or unable to speak is brought to an emergency unit, how does the doctor determine that the patient does not have health insurance? I do know a few people who have health insurance in Nigeria, it's not like health insurance does not exist in Nigeria. In a situation where one of those few who have health insurance in Nigeria is rushed to a hospital in a critical condition after a ghastly accident unable to speak, how does the doctor determine immediately that he does not have health insurance nor the ability to pay when they turn them back immediately?

Even in those western countries where healthcare is not free - such as America - does everyone have health insurance? Do they turn patients who have no ability to pay away?
